Saturated adsorption of lidocaine and coal tar dyes onto porous polytetrafluoroethylene.

ABSTRACT: Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has excellent physical properties and has been used in a wide range of applications in various fields. Adsorption research on PTFE is essential as primary research for the further application of PTFE. We attempted to adsorb coal tar dyes and model drugs such as lidocaine onto PTFE as a guideline to search for medicines that adsorb onto PTFE. Saturation curves were obtained after analyzing the adsorption of coal tar dyes on PTFE using the Hanes-Woolf plot. In addition, we collected multiple cases of ATR-FTIR spectral changes and/or retention depending on TPM derivatives and other adsorbates. Lidocaine matched some coal tar dye for the apparent spectral changes between the adsorbed molecules and its crystalline powder. The apparent spectral changes are blue-shifted, suggesting a hydrophobic interaction between the dyes/lidocaine and porous PTFE. This work provides a promising strategy for further application of PTFE.

Mechanisms of Individual and Simultaneous Adsorption of Antibiotics and Dyes onto Halloysite Nanoclay and Regeneration of Saturated Adsorbent via Cold Plasma Bubbling.

Project description:Halloysite nanoclay (HNC) was examined as an adsorbent for the individual and simultaneous removal of antibiotic enrofloxacin (ENRO) and methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions, alongside its regeneration via cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) bubbling. Initially, batch kinetics and isotherm studies were carried out, while the effect of several parameters was evaluated. Both ENRO and MB adsorption onto HNC was better described by Langmuir model, with its maximum adsorption capacity being 34.80 and 27.66 mg/g, respectively. A Pseudo-second order model fitted the experimental data satisfactorily, suggesting chemisorption (through electrostatic interactions) as the prevailing adsorption mechanism, whereas adsorption was also controlled by film diffusion. In the binary system, the presence of MB seemed to act antagonistically to the adsorption of ENRO. The saturated adsorbent was regenerated inside a CAP microbubble reactor and its adsorption capacity was re-tested by applying new adsorption cycles. CAP bubbling was able to efficiently regenerate saturated HNC with low energy requirements (16.67 Wh/g-adsorbent) in contrast to Fenton oxidation. Most importantly, the enhanced adsorption capacity of the CAP-regenerated HNC (compared to raw HNC), when applied in new adsorption cycles, indicated its activation during the regeneration process. The present study provides a green, sustainable and highly effective alternative for water remediation where pharmaceutical and dyes co-exist.

Adsorption of some cationic dyes onto two models of graphene oxide.

Project description:ContextThe search for highly efficient adsorbent materials remains a significant requirement in the field of adsorption for wastewater treatment. Computational study can highly contribute to the identification of efficient material. In this work, we propose a computational approach to study the adsorption of four cationic basic dyes, basic blue 26 (BB26), basic green 1 (BG1), basic yellow 2 (BY2), and basic red 1 (BR1), onto two models of graphene oxide as adsorbents. The main objectives of this study are the assessment of the adsorption capacity of the graphene oxide towards basic dyes and the evaluation of the environmental and temperature effects on the adsorption capacity. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis has been used to understand the interactions between the dyes and graphene oxides. In addition, adsorption free energies of the dyes onto graphene oxides are calculated in gas and solvent phases for temperatures varying from 200 to 400 K. As a result, the adsorption free energy varies linearly depending on the temperature, highlighting the importance of temperature effects in the adsorption processes. Furthermore, the results indicate that the environment (through the solvation) considerably affects the calculated adsorption free energies. Overall, the results show that the two models of graphene oxide used in this work are efficient for removing dyes from wastewater.MethodsWe have optimized the complexes formed by the interaction of dyes with graphene oxides at the PW6B95-D3/def2-SVP level of theory. The SMD solvation model realizes the implicit solvation, and water is used as the solvent. Calculations are performed using the Gaussian 16 suite of program. QTAIM analysis is performed using the AIMAll program. Gibbs free energies as function of temperature are calculated using the TEMPO program.

Coal Tar Pitch-Based Porous Carbon Loaded MoS<sub>2</sub> and Its Application in Supercapacitors.

Project description:In this paper, with coal tar pitch as the carbon source, porous carbon (PC) was prepared by one-step carbonization. To improve the energy density of coal tar pitch-based porous carbon, MoS2@PC was prepared by a hydrothermal method on a PC substrate. The effect of MoS2 loading on the structure and electrochemical properties of the sample was studied. The results show that the specific surface area of the MoS2@PC-0.3 synthesized is 3053 m2 g-1, and the large specific surface area provides sufficient attachment sites for the storage of electrolyte ions. In the three-electrode system, the specific capacitance of MoS2@PC-0.3 at 0.5 A g-1 is 422.5 F g-1, and the magnification performance is 57.3% at 20 A g-1. After 10,000 charge/discharge cycles, the capacitance retention rate of the sample is 76.73%, with the Coulombic efficiency being 100%. In the two-electrode test system, the specific capacitance of MoS2@PC-0.3 at 0.5 A g-1 is 321.4 F g-1, with the power density and energy density being 500 W kg-1 and 44.6 Wh kg-1, respectively. At a current density of 20 A g-1, the capacitance retention rate is 87.69% after 10,000 cycles. This study greatly improves the energy density of PC as the electrode material of supercapacitors.

N/O Co-doped Porous Carbons Derived from Coal Tar Pitch for Ultra-high Specific Capacitance Supercapacitors.

Project description:In this paper, a series of N/O co-doped porous carbons (PCs) were designed and used to prepare coal tar pitch-based supercapacitors (SCs). The introduction of N/O species under the intervention of urea effectively improves the pseudocapacitance of PCs. The results show that the specific surface area of synthesized N3PC4-700 is 1914 m2 g-1, while the N and O contents are 1.3 and 7.2%, respectively. The unique interconnected pore structure and proper organic N/O co-doping, especially the introduction of pyridine-N and pyrrole-N, are beneficial for improving the electrochemical performance of PCs. In the three-electrode system, the specific capacitance and rate capability of N3PC4-700 are 532.5 F g-1 and 72.5% at the current densities of 0.5 and 20 A g-1, respectively. In addition, the specific capacitance of N3PC4-700 in a coin-type symmetric device is 315.5 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1. The N3PC4-700 electrode provides an energy density of 43.8 W h kg-1 with a power density of 0.5 kW kg-1 and still maintains a value of 29.7 at 10 kW kg-1. After 10,000 charge/discharge cycles, the retention rate was as high as 96.7%. In order to obtain high-performance carbon-based SCs, the effective identification and regulation of organic N/O species is necessary.

Super and Selective Adsorption of Cationic Dyes onto Carboxylate-Modified Passion Fruit Peel Biosorbent.

Project description:The carboxylate-functionalized passion fruit peel (PFPCS) was an efficient and rapid biosorbent for wastewater treatment. The PFPCS exhibited excellent selectivity to the cationic dyes, where the maximum adsorption capacities for methylene blue (MB) and methyl violet (MV) were 1,775.76 mg g-1 and 3,756.33 mg g-1, respectively. And the adsorption process of MB and MV on PFPCS reached equilibrium within 20 min. Moreover, the adsorption conditions and mechanisms were investigated. The adsorption process was in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. The adsorption mechanism was also proposed to be electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bond. After six cycles of desorption-adsorption, the removal efficient of MB and MV could be kept above 95%. Thus, PFPCS was considered as a highly efficient absorbent for removing cationic dyes from polluted water due to excellent adsorption characteristics, low cost and environmental friendliness.

Adsorption of Eosin B from Wastewater onto the Prepared Porous Anion Exchange Membrane.

Project description:This research describes the fabrication of the porous trimethylamine (TMA)-grafted anion exchange membrane (AEM) over a phase inversion process. The synthesis of the generated AEM was verified using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The fabricated porous AEM showed 240% water uptake (WR), 1.45 mg/g ion exchange capacity (IEC), and a 9.0% linear expansion ratio (LER) at 25 °C. It exhibited a porous structure and higher thermal stability. It was utilized to remove eosin B (EB) from wastewater via the process of adsorption. The adsorption capacity of EB increased with time and the starting concentration of EB while decreasing with temperature and the AEM dosage. Adsorption isotherm investigation results showed that EB adsorption onto the porous AEM followed the Langmuir isotherm because the value of correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.992) was close to unity. Because the correlation coefficient was close to one, it was determined through adsorption kinetic experiments that the adsorption of EB on the produced porous AEM was suitable for a pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic study about process of EB adsorption on the porous AEM revealed that there was an exothermic (ΔH° = -16.60 kJ/mol) and spontaneous process.

Protein Adsorption onto Modified Porous Silica by Single and Binary Human Serum Protein Solutions.

Project description:Typical porous silica (SBA-15) has been modified with pore expander agent (1,3,5-trimethylbenzene) and fluoride-species to diminish the length of the channels to obtain materials with different textural properties, varying the Si/Zr molar ratio between 20 and 5. These porous materials were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms at -196 °C and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), obtaining adsorbent with a surface area between 420-337 m2 g-1 and an average pore diameter with a maximum between 20-25 nm. These materials were studied in the adsorption of human blood serum proteins (human serum albumin-HSA and immunoglobulin G-IgG). Generally, the incorporation of small proportions was favorable for proteins adsorption. The adsorption data revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity was reached close to the pI. The batch purification experiments in binary human serum solutions showed that Si sample has considerable adsorption for IgG while HSA adsorption is relatively low, so it is possible its separation.

Silsesquioxane-Based Triphenylamine-Linked Fluorescent Porous Polymer for Dyes Adsorption and Nitro-Aromatics Detection.

Project description:In order to enrich hybrid materials, a novel fluorescent silsesquioxane-based polymer (denoted as PCS-OTS) was synthesized by Friedel-Crafts reaction starting from octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) with triphenylamine-functionalized silsesquioxane monomer (denoted as OTS) with AlCl3 as catalyst. PCS-OTS possessed a high surface area of 816 m2/g and a unique bimodal pore structure. The triphenylamine unit endowed PCS-OTS with excellent luminescence, which made it act as a sensitive chemical sensor and detect p-nitrophenol with high sensitivity (KSV = 81,230 M-1). Moreover, PCS-OTS can significantly remove dyes, and the respective adsorption capacity for Rhodamine B (RB), Congo red (CR) and Methyl Orange (MO) is 1935, 1420 and 155 mg/g. Additionally, it could simultaneously remove multiple dyes from water by simple filtration and be easily regenerated. This hybrid porous polymer can be a good choice for water treatment.

Comparative Study of Three Dyes’ Adsorption onto Activated Carbon from Chenopodium quinoa Willd and Quillaja saponaria

Project description:The present study shows porous activated carbon obtained from Chenopodium quinoa Willd and Quillaja saponaria and their use as potential adsorbents to remove three types of dyes from aqueous solutions. The adsorption results were compared with commercial charcoal to check their efficiency. All porous carbon materials were activated using carbon dioxide and steam and fully characterized. Moreover, the steam-activated samples exhibited a high total pore volume with a BET surface area of around 800 m2 g−1. Batch adsorption experiments showed that commercial charcoal is the charcoal that offered the best adsorption efficiency for tartrazine and sunset yellow FCF. However, in the case of crystal violet, all activated carbons obtained from Chenopodium quinoa Willd and Quillaja saponaria showed the best captures, outperforming commercial charcoal. Molecular dockings of the dyes on the commercial charcoal surface were performed using AutoDock Vina. The kinetic results of the three isotherm’s models for the present data follow the order: Langmuir~Freundlich > Temkin.

Coal-Tar Dye-based Coordination Cages and Helicates.

Project description:A strategy to implement four members of the classic coal-tar dye family, Michler's ketone, methylene blue, rhodamine B, and crystal violet, into [Pd2 L4 ] self-assemblies is introduced. Chromophores were incorporated into bis-monodentate ligands using piperazine linkers that allow to retain the auxochromic dialkyl amine functionalities required for intense colors deep in the visible spectrum. Upon palladium coordination, ligands with pyridine donors form lantern-shaped dinuclear cages while quinoline donors lead to strongly twisted [Pd2 L4 ] helicates in solution. In one case, single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed rearrangement to a [Pd3 L6 ] ring structure in the solid state. For nine examined derivatives, showing colors from yellow to deep violet, CD spectroscopy discloses different degrees of chiral induction by an enantiomerically pure guest. Ion mobility mass spectrometry allows to distinguish two binding modes. Self-assemblies based on this new ligand class promise application in chiroptical recognition, photo-redox catalysis and optical materials.
