Core-shell Pd-P@Pt-Ni nanoparticles with enhanced activity and durability as anode electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation reaction.

ABSTRACT: Pd-P@Pt-Ni core-shell nanoparticles, which consisted of a Pd-P alloy as a core and Pt-Ni thin layer as a shell, were explored as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction. The crystallographic information and the electronic properties were fully investigated by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In the methanol electrooxidation reaction, the particles showed high catalytic activity and strong resistance to the poisoning carbonaceous species in comparison with those of commercial Pt/C and the as-prepared Pt/C catalysts. The excellent durability was demonstrated by electrochemically active surface area loss and chronoamperometric measurements. These results would be due to the enhanced catalytic properties of Pt by the double synergistic effects from the core part and the nickel species in the shell part.

A self-supporting bimetallic Au@Pt core-shell nanoparticle electrocatalyst for the synergistic enhancement of methanol oxidation.

Project description:The morphology of Pt-Au bimetal nanostructures plays an important role in enhancing the catalytic capability, catalytic stability and utilization efficiency of the platinum. We designed and successfully prepared Au@Pt nanoparticles (NPs) through an economical, surfactant-free and efficient method of seed-mediated growth. The Au@Pt NPs displayed electrochemical performances superior to those of commercial Pt/C catalysts because their agglomeration was prevented and exhibited better long-term stability with respect to methanol oxidation in acidic media by efficiently removing intermediates. Among the obtained Au@Pt NPs, Au90@Pt10 NPs exhibited the most significantly enhanced catalytic performance for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Their mass and electrochemically active surface area (ECSA)-normalized current densities are approximately 3.9 and 4.6 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C catalysts, respectively. The oxidation current densities of the Au90@Pt10 NPs are approximately 1.8 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C catalysts after 4000 s of continuous measurement because the small Pt NPs grown on the surface of the Au90@Pt10 NPs were effectively stabilized by the Au metal support. This approach may be a facile method for the synthesis of self-supported bimetallic nanostructures, which is of great significance for the development of high performance electrocatalysts and sensors.

Mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt<sub>3</sub>Ni core-shell framework nanowire electrocatalyst for efficient oxygen reduction.

Project description:The design of Pt-based nanoarchitectures with controllable compositions and morphologies is necessary to enhance their electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we report a rational design and synthesis of anisotropic mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt3Ni core-shell framework nanowires for high-efficient electrocatalysis. The catalyst has a uniform core-shell structure with an ultrathin atomic-jagged Pt nanowire core and a mesoporous Pt-skin Pt3Ni framework shell, possessing high electrocatalytic activity, stability and Pt utilisation efficiency. For the oxygen reduction reaction, the anisotropic mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt3Ni core-shell framework nanowires demonstrated exceptional mass and specific activities of 6.69 A/mgpt and 8.42 mA/cm2 (at 0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode), and the catalyst exhibited high stability with negligible activity decay after 50,000 cycles. The mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt3Ni core-shell framework nanowire configuration combines the advantages of three-dimensional open mesopore molecular accessibility and compressive Pt-skin surface strains, which results in more catalytically active sites and weakened chemisorption of oxygenated species, thus boosting its catalytic activity and stability towards electrocatalysis.

Effect of Ni Core Structure on the Electrocatalytic Activity of Pt-Ni/C in Methanol Oxidation.

Project description:Methanol oxidation catalysts comprising an outer Pt-shell with an inner Ni-core supported on carbon, (Pt-Ni/C), were prepared with either crystalline or amorphous Ni core structures. Structural comparisons of the two forms of catalyst were made using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and methanol oxidation activity compared using CV and chronoamperometry (CA). While both the amorphous Ni core and crystalline Ni core structures were covered by similar Pt shell thickness and structure, the Pt-Ni(amorphous)/C catalyst had higher methanol oxidation activity. The amorphous Ni core thus offers improved Pt usage efficiency in direct methanol fuel cells.

Electrodeposition of Mesoporous Ni-Rich Ni-Pt Films for Highly Efficient Methanol Oxidation.

Project description:The use of soft templates for the electrosynthesis of mesoporous materials has shown tremendous potential in energy and environmental domains. Among all the approaches that have been featured in the literature, block copolymer-templated electrodeposition had robustness and a simple method, but it practically cannot be used for the synthesis of mesoporous materials not based on Pt or Au. Nonetheless, extending and understanding the possibilities and limitations of block copolymer-templated electrodeposition to other materials and substrates is still challenging. Herein, a critical analysis of the role of the solution's primary electroactive components and the applied potential were performed in order to understand their influences on the mesostructure of Ni-rich Ni-Pt mesoporous films. Among all the components, tetrahydrofuran and a platinum (IV) complex were shown to be crucial for the formation of a truly 3D mesoporous network. The electrosynthesized well-ordered mesoporous Ni-rich Ni-Pt deposits exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance for methanol oxidation in alkaline conditions, improved stability and durability after 1000 cycles, and minimal CO poisoning.

A strategy for fabricating porous PdNi@Pt core-shell nanostructures and their enhanced activity and durability for the methanol electrooxidation.

Project description:Three-dimensionally (3D) porous morphology of nanostructures can effectively improve their electrocatalytic activity and durability for various electrochemical reactions owing to big surface area and interconnected structure. Cyanogel, a jelly-like inorganic polymer, can be used to synthesize various three-dimensionally (3D) porous alloy nanomaterials owing to its double-metal property and particular 3D backbone. Here, 3D porous PdNi@Pt core-shell nanostructures (CSNSs) are facilely synthesized by first preparing the Pd-Ni alloy networks (Pd-Ni ANWs) core via cyanogel-reduction method followed by a galvanic displacement reaction to generate the Pt-rich shell. The as-synthesized PdNi@Pt CSNSs exhibit a much improved catalytic activity and durability for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in the acidic media compared to the commercial used Pt black because of their specific structural characteristics. The facile and mild method described herein is highly attractive for the synthisis of 3D porous core-shell nanostructures.

Synthesis of Hollow Pt-Ni Nanoboxes for Highly Efficient Methanol Oxidation.

Project description:In direct methanol fuel cell technology, highly stable electrochemical catalysts are critically important for their practical utilization at the commercial scale. In this study, sub ~10 nm hollow Pt-Ni (1:1 at. ratio) nanoboxes supported on functionalized Vulcan carbon (Pt-Ni/C-R2) were synthesized through a facile method for the efficient electrooxidation of methanol. Two reaction procedures, namely, a simultaneous reduction and a modified sequential reduction method using a reverse microemulsion (RME) method, were adopted to synthesize solid Pt-Ni NPs and hollow nanoboxes, respectively. To correlate the alloy composition and surface structure with the enhanced catalytic activity, the results were compared with the nanocatalyst synthesized using a conventional NaBH4 reduction method. The calculated electroactive surface area for the Pt-Ni/C-R2 nanoboxes was 190.8 m2.g-1, which is significantly higher compared to that of the Pt-Ni nanocatalyst (96.4 m2.g-1) synthesized by a conventional reduction method. Hollow nanoboxes showed 34% and 44% increases in mass activity and rate of methanol oxidation reaction, respectively, compared to solid NPs. These results support the nanoreactor confinement effect of the hollow nanoboxes. The experimental results were supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies, which revealed that the lowest CO poisoning of the Pt1Ni1 catalyst among all Ptm-Nin mixing ratios may account for the enhanced methanol oxidation. The synthesized hollow Pt-Ni/C (R2) nanoboxes may prove to be a valuable and highly efficient catalysts for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol due to their low cost, numerous catalytically active sites, low carbon monoxide poisoning, large electroactive surface area and long-term stability.

Branched Pd@Rh core@shell nanocrystals with exposed Rh {100} facets: an effective electrocatalyst for hydrazine electro-oxidation.

Project description:Shape control of noble metal (NM) nanocrystals (NCs) is of great importance for improving their electrocatalytic performance. In this report, branched Pd@Rh core@shell NCs that have right square prism-like arms with preferential exposure of Rh {100} facets (denoted as b-Pd@Rh-NCs thereafter) are synthesized and utilized as an electrocatalyst for the hydrazine electrooxidation (HEO) in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. The b-Pd@Rh-NCs are obtained by the heteroepitaxial growth of Rh on the pre-formed branched Pd NCs (denoted as b-Pd-NCs thereafter) core in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and bromide ions. A comparative analysis of the voltammetric data for the HEO shows a higher activity on the b-Pd@Rh-NCs exposed with Rh {100} faces than on Rh black, the b-Pd-NCs, and Pd black in acid and alkaline solutions, indicating a structure sensitivity of the reaction. Analysis of the products from the b-Pd@Rh-NCs catalysed HEO reveals a very high hydrazine fuel efficiency, as determined by on-line differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS).

Mesoporous Pt@PtM (M = Co, Ni) cage-bell nanostructures toward methanol electro-oxidation.

Project description:Rational design of Pt-based nanostructures with a controllable morphology and composition is vital for electrocatalysis. Herein, we demonstrate a dual-template strategy to fabricate well-defined cage-bell nanostructures including a Pt core and a mesoporous PtM (M = Co, Ni) bimetallic shell (Pt@mPtM (M = Co, Ni) CBs). Owing to their unique nanostructure and bimetallic properties, Pt@mPtM (M = Co, Ni) CBs show higher catalytic activity, better durability and stronger CO tolerance for the methanol oxidation reaction than commercial Pt/C. This work provides a general method for convenient preparation of cage-bell nanostructures with a mesoporous bimetallic shell, which have high promising potential for application in electrocatalytic fields.

Topographical and compositional engineering of core-shell Ni@Pt ORR electro-catalysts.

Project description:Complex faceted geometries and compositional anisotropy in alloy nanoparticles (NPs) can enhance catalytic performance. We report on the preparation of binary PtNi NPs via a co-thermolytic approach in which we optimize the synthesis variables, which results in significantly improved catalytic performance. We used scanning transmission electron microscopy to characterise the range of morphologies produced, which included spherical and concave cuboidal core-shell structures. Electrocatalytic activity was evaluated using a rotating disc electrode (1600 rpm) in 0.1 M HClO4; the electrocatalytic performance of these Ni@Pt NPs showed significant (∼11-fold) improvement compared to a commercial Pt/C catalyst. Extended cycling revealed that electrochemical surface area was retained by cuboidal PtNi NPs post 5000 electrochemical cycles (0.05-1.00 V, vs. SHE). This is attributed to the enclosure of Ni atoms by a thick Pt shell, thus limiting Ni dissolution from the alloy structures. The novel synthetic strategy presented here results in a high yield of Ni@Pt NPs which show excellent electro-catalytic activity and useful durability.

Methanol electro oxidation on Ni-Pt-CrO/CNFs composite: morphology, structural, and electrochemical characterization.

Project description:In this work, prepared nanoparticle samples of Ni1-xCrx with a fixed ratio of platinum (3%) were synthesized and loaded onto carbon nanofibers, which were produced by an electrospinning technique and carbonized at 900 °C for 7 h in an argon atmosphere. A variety of analysis techniques were applied to examine the stoichiometry, structure, surface morphology, and electrochemical activity. The carbonization process produces carbon nanofibers decorated with metal nanoparticles. Typical fibre diameters are 250-520 nm. The fibre morphologies of the treated samples don't exhibit any overt alterations. A study of the samples' methanol electrocatalytic capabilities was conducted. Cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance measurements were used to investigate catalytic performance and electrode stability as a function of electrolyte concentration, scan rate, and reaction time. The electrooxidation reaction's activation energy is increased, and the electrode's stability is increased, when Cr is added to Ni. In sample C3, the maximum current density (JPE) was 170.3 mA/cm2 at 0.8 V with an onset potential of 0.352 V. Utilizing our electrocatalysts, the electrooxidation of methanol involves a mix of kinetic and diffusion control limiting reactions. This study has shown how to fabricate a powerful Ni-Pt-Cr-based methanol electrooxidation catalyst using a novel approach.
