Dehydration of methanol and ethanol over ferrierite originated layered zeolites - the role of acidity and porous structure.

ABSTRACT: Ferrierites and their delaminated (ITQ-6) and silica intercalated (ITQ-36) forms, with the intended molar Si/Al ratios of zeolite layers of 30 and 50, were synthesized and tested as catalysts of methanol to dimethyl ether (DME) as well as ethanol to diethyl ether (DEE) and ethylene dehydration. It was shown that increased content of acid sites, especially of Brønsted type, resulted in more active catalysts of alcohol dehydration. Brønsted acid sites dominate in ferrierites and their delaminated forms (ITQ-6). Contribution of the Lewis type of acid sites increased in silica pillared ferrierites (ITQ-36) possibly by deposition of aluminium species on the surface of amorphous silica. Conversion of methanol to DME was not limited by internal diffusion of reactants in narrow pores of ferrierite. Such limitation was observed for synthesis of larger DEE molecules over ferrierites. The ITQ-6 catalysts with the opened interlayer structure presented better efficiency in ethanol to DEE conversion due to overcoming these diffusional restrictions. Moreover, selectivity to DEE over ITQ-6 was higher than in the presence of three-dimensional ferrierite.

Project description:Control of the spatial proximity of Brønsted acid sites within the zeolite framework can result in materials with properties that are distinct from materials synthesized through conventional crystallization methods or available from commercial sources. Recent experimental evidence has shown that turnover rates of different acid-catalyzed reactions increase with the fraction of proximal sites in chabazite (CHA) zeolites. The catalytic conversion of oxygenates is an important research area, and the dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether (DME) is a well-studied reaction as part of methanol-to-olefin chemistry catalyzed by solid acids. Published experimental data have shown that DME formation rates (per acid site) increase systematically with the fraction of proximal acid sites in the six-membered ring of CHA. Here, we probe the effect of acid site proximity in CHA on methanol dehydration rates using electronic structure calculations and microkinetic modeling to identify the primary causes of this chemistry and their relationship to the local structure of the catalyst at the nanoscale. We report a density functional theory-parametrized microkinetic model of methanol dehydration to DME, catalyzed by acidic CHA zeolite with direct comparison to experimental data. Effects of proximal acid sites on reaction rates were captured quantitatively for a range of operating conditions and catalyst compositions, with a focus on total paired acid site concentration and reactant clustering to form higher nuclearity complexes. Next-nearest neighbor paired acid sites were identified as promoting the formation of methanol trimer clusters rather than the inhibiting tetramer or pentamer clusters, resulting in large increases in the rate for DME production due to the lower energy barriers present in the concerted methanol trimer reaction pathway. The model framework developed in this study can be extended to other zeolite materials and reaction chemistries toward the goal of rational design and development of next-generation catalytic materials and chemical processes.

Project description:In this paper, the ultrasonic-assisted desilication technique was reported as an attractive and efficient way for the preparation of hierarchical zeolites with MFI structure type. The prepared materials were used as active catalysts for the dehydration of ethanol into diethyl ether and ethylene. For all catalysts, the selectivity to diethyl ether was ca 95% or higher up to 210 °C, with catalytic activity in the range of 40-68%. In case of desilicated zeolites, at 270-290 °C, the conversion of ethanol was full with selectivity to ethylene ca 80%. MFI-type commercial zeolite was treated with a sodium and/or tetrabutylammonium hydroxide aqueous solutions (NaOH or NaOH/TBAOH) for 30 min. In the case of the application of ultrasounds, a QSonica Q700 sonicator (60 W and 20 kHz) equipped with a "1" diameter horn was used. In all cases, desilication was performed in an ice bath in order to keep the procedure conditions at low temperature. It was indicated that the use of ultrasounds during desilication procedure caused higher extraction of silicon and aluminum, which was connected with an elevated mesoporosity in relation to the samples modified in the absence of ultrasounds. Ultrasonic-assisted treatment of MFI-type zeolite caused also an apparent formation of numerous holes inside zeolite grains, resembling the look of "swiss cheese". Furthermore, it was indicated that the samples prepared using ultrasonic irradiation exhibited enhanced catalytic properties in the dehydration of ethanol. For instance, MFI-type zeolite treated with NaOH/TBAOH alkaline mixture containing 10 mol% of TBAOH in the presence of ultrasounds (M-10 s) demonstrated higher both conversion of ethanol (59% vs. 47%) and selectivity to diethyl ether (95% vs. 93%) in comparison with zeolite modified conventionally (M-10c). The best catalyst was zeolite ultrasonically desilicated with NaOH/TBAOH solution of 70 mol% of TBAOH (M-70s). Generally, this catalyst indicated the highest conversion of ethanol, very high selectivity to diethyl ether (94-100%) at 150-210 °C and the highest selectivity to ethylene among investigated catalysts (21%, 66% and 84%) at 230 °C, 250 oC and 270 °C.
