Suspension of face-to-face teaching and ad hoc transition to digital learning under Covid-19 conditions - a qualitative study among dental students and lecturers.

ABSTRACT:

Background

In mid-March 2020, the coronavirus pandemic led to a national lockdown in Germany. Face-to-face teaching was cancelled in universities for the 2020 summer semester. Teaching moved online with no prior IT testing and lecturer training. The study analyses experiences of the suspension of face-to-face teaching and the move to digitalised learning for students and lecturers of dentistry at Kiel.

Methods

In summer 2020, qualitative guided interviews were conducted with students (4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th semesters), and lecturers. Deductive and inductive qualitative content analysis of the results was carried out.

Results

Thirty-nine students (69% female) and 19 lecturers (32% female) were interviewed. Reactions to the changes in teaching were observed. Feelings ranged from an essentially positive attitude, through insecurity and uncertainty to a failure to fully appreciate the situation. The loss of social contact was lamented. Digitalisation was associated with technological challenges and additional work. However, it also fostered learning independent of time and place, and encouraged autonomy. Negative aspects of digitalisation included a lack of feedback and loss of interaction.

Conclusion

The introduction of ad hoc digitalisation challenged both students and lecturers alike. Dealing with lockdown and the changes in teaching and studying required significant flexibility.

Project description:This study examined lecturers' teaching competencies at universities in the attempt to improve the teaching and learning process by considering students' perspectives. Specifically, the study examined indicators of lecturers' teaching competencies in universities as well as establishing whether there is a relationship between students' perceived lecturers' teaching competencies and students' demographic parameters. The study used a cross-sectional survey design to generate data from 422 undergraduate students from three public universities in Tanzania using a questionnaire. Means, standard deviations, percentages and the independent T-test were used to analyse data. Experts and peer reviews were carried out to determine the validity of the study. The study's reliability was assessed using Cronbach Alpha in which content competency = 0.889, pedagogical competency = 0.809, assessment and evaluation skills = 0.701, and technological competency = 0.777 show acceptance of theoretical constructs. From the findings, students perceived content, pedagogical, assessment and technological competencies are key indicators of lecturers' teaching competencies that improve the teaching and learning process. Based on demographic factors, there was no relationship among the four variables. These findings imply that university lecturers are required to possess and master the perceived competencies and see how best they connect these competencies to students' needs, beliefs and aspirations during their teaching processes. Thus, in designing their lesson, lecturers have to consider the four teaching competencies, which in turn may improve students' performance. The study recommends a policy guideline by the Tanzania Commission for Universities for academicians to undergo training on assessment, pedagogy and technology. This will help lecturers to develop a common understanding of the teaching competencies and maintain teaching quality. Furthermore, universities should mobilize their resources and set aside enough funds to buy ICT facilities so that lecturers can easily integrate technology into their teaching processes so as to meet the current demand for technological advancement.

Project description:ObjectiveOnline teaching has been confirmed as an effective method for maintaining educational quality in many courses. However, it remains unclear whether the teaching effectiveness of face-to-face teaching can be achieved in neurosurgery clinical courses. In this study, we aim to analyze the effect of online teaching on neurosurgery by comparing it with traditional face-to-face teaching and investigating the students' willingness to engage with online teaching, as well as their evaluations of this mode of teaching.MethodsWe randomly selected three classes of fourth year medical students who received online teaching and three classes of fourth year medical students who received face-to-face teaching. After completing the neurosurgery curriculum, the study examined the differences between the two groups in terms of satisfaction with the course, theoretical knowledge, and clinical practice abilities, which included medical history inquiry, physical examination, diagnosis, and treatment. In the online teaching setting, a survey was conducted to assess the students' willingness to accept online teaching and to identify its shortcomings.ResultsThe self-evaluation items included learning motivation, learning more targeted and more interestingly, clinical thinking ability, clinician-patient communication skills, and teamwork skills. All of these aspects were significantly better in the face-to-face group compared to the online group. Each item's score for clinical practice abilities in the face-to-face group was notably higher than that of the online group. Students' satisfaction with and evaluation of the effectiveness of online teaching were lower than those of face-to-face teaching. The primary drawback of online teaching is the lack of a traditional classroom atmosphere, followed by limited interaction with teachers and classmates.ConclusionsThe face-to-face group had better self-evaluation and clinical practice abilities than the online group. Additionally, students expressed a preference for face-to-face teaching of neurosurgery clinical courses. The absence of a traditional classroom atmosphere is the main drawback of online teaching. Therefore, online teaching cannot completely replace traditional face-to-face teaching in neurosurgery clinical courses.

Project description:BackgroundDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Leipzig completely switched to online teaching. Thus, we developed a practice-oriented digital substitute for a two-week mandatory general practice (GP) clerkship. Main components were processing of clinical cases and additional GP topics, visual diagnoses, information and examination videos, and regular remote exchanges with associated GP teachers. We took the chance to comprehensively evaluate the new teaching formats (acceptance, use, working enjoyment, learning gain, practical relevance, insights into general practice) and to compare evaluations with two previous semesters to gain insights for future blended learning concepts.MethodsCross-sectional post-hoc online evaluation among fourth year (of six) medical students participating in the digital mandatory 2-week GP clerkship during summer semester 2020; additional cohort comparison with two previous semesters (face-to-face clerkship).ResultsOut of 192 participants in the digital clerkship, 99 completed our questionnaire (response rate = 51.6%). Results were compared with 277 previous evaluations (face-to-face semesters). Most participants reported having enjoyed the online-based clerkship (87.9%), having learned a lot (89.9%), having gained insights into general practice (76.8%), and perceived high practical relevance (90.9%). Implementing the new teaching formats into future face-to-face clerkships was welcomed by 65.6%. Clinical cases, visual diagnoses, examination videos and communication with GP teachers were rated best regarding working enjoyment, learning gain, practical relevance and insights into a GP's work. Cohort comparison revealed somewhat better evaluations regarding knowledge transfer for the digital clerkship while imparting of skills and attitudes was reportedly worse.ConclusionsStudents welcomed the digital content and perceived relevant learning gain. Our results may help to develop future blended learning concepts. Clinical cases, examination videos and visual diagnoses appear to be particularly suitable as useful online complements which could enrich face-to-face teaching. As students especially valued the exclusive time for exchanges with their preceptor, this should be facilitated in face-to-face clerkships.

Project description:Objective To assess whether the implementation of teeth drawing exercises in a dental anatomy course improves first-year (D1) dental students' understanding of tooth morphology, their dexterity, and their clinical skills compared with D1s who did not participate in the drawing exercises. Methods In 2020, a “Teeth Drawing Module” was implemented within the D1 dental anatomy curriculum. In this course, students learn how to draw accurate outlines of teeth. The students are required to complete two types of drawing projects. Illustrations and instructions of teeth drawings that are outlined in a manual drawing book, PowerPoint presentations, illustration videos, and assessments are provided. Students' grades in the drawing module, waxing skills assessments, and their didactic exams were used to evaluate and assess the correlation between their drawing aptitude and their manual skills. Students who took the drawing course were compared with students who did not take the drawing course to determine if the drawings improved students' understanding of tooth morphology, their dexterity, and their clinical skills. A comprehensive survey was also developed and distributed to students who had the drawing module in their curriculum. Results Students who participated in the drawing module were more successful in the dental anatomy course compared with students in the control classes. Classes that had drawing exercises scored significantly higher in all dental anatomy waxing exercises compared with classes that did not have drawing exercises (p < 0.001). There was a significant positive correlation between drawing and waxing scores (p < 0.05). Moreover, there was a significant positive correlation between drawing and didactic scores (p < 0.001). Conclusions Drawing exercises can be useful instruments for effectively representing and integrating the spatial domain of anatomical information. Teeth drawings as an adjunctive tool offer excellent visualization and allow students to improve their manual dexterity and knowledge in the dental anatomy course.
