Survey data of determinants related to Covid-19 preventive behaviors during the second waves in Indonesia using the reasoned action approach.

ABSTRACT: The dataset presented in this article examines preventive behaviors related to Covid-19 among Indonesians, i.e., wearing a mask, hand washing, and distancing, and its related determinants. Data collection was carried out when Indonesia was facing the second waves due to the rapid transmission of the Delta variant virus. The data assessing socio-demographic information, beliefs related to Covid-19 preventive behaviors based on the reasoned action approach, general beliefs about Covid-19, and Covid-19 preventive behaviors, from 18th June to 18th August 2021, gathering a total of 863 completed responses. The sampling technique in this online survey used a combination of purposive and snowball sampling methods to gather the participants via social media such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp throughout Indonesia. The survey data were analyzed using frequency distributions and bivariate correlation analysis. The data will help to understand the psychosocial determinants of Covid-19 preventive behaviors and provide insight for the development of behavior change intervention to limit the spread of Covid-19 among Indonesians.

Project description:BackgroundResearch on Hispanics' activity preferences suggest that they prefer engaging in group-oriented physical activities, such as organized exercise. Yet, little is known about pathways to participation in organized exercise among Hispanics. This study used a reasoned action approach (RAA) framework to explore beliefs and determinants of organized exercise among Hispanics. Specifically, we examined the impact of participants' intentions on reported organized exercise behavior, and the relation between intentions and attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and self-efficacy.MethodsOur mixed-methods study was part of a larger pre-post design intervention study. Participants completed an interview containing open- and closed-ended questions to identify salient beliefs and practices about attending organized exercise activities. We conducted two separate regression models to assess the effects of intentions on behavior (n = 330) and the associations of RAA constructs on intentions (n = 101), both adjusting for demographics. Qualitative analysis of a sub-sample (n = 105) of responses to open-ended questions identified salient beliefs related to organized exercise attendance.ResultsOur results showed that intentions predicted behavior at follow up (IRR = 2.03, p < .05), and that attitudes and perceived behavioral control were associated with intentions (β = .36, p < .05; β = .36, p <. 05, respectively). Qualitative findings suggest participants value health and the behavioral benefits of attending organized exercise activities; feel approval from family and friends; and identify transportation, time, distance, and costs as factors that influence their attendance to organized exercise activities.ConclusionsConsistent with theoretical expectations, we identified statistically significant determinants of intentions and attendance to organized exercise. Findings can inform the development of persuasive messages and interventions to promote exercise in low-income Hispanic populations facing obesity disparities.

Project description:BackgroundThis study provides an empirical test of the reasoned action approach (RAA) socio-cognitive theory with the aim of 1) predicting the intention of public dental health personnel (PDHP) to report suspected child-maltreatment to child welfare services (CWS); 2) estimating the effects of the theoretical constructs of RAA, including experiential and instrumental attitudes, injunctive and descriptive norms, and perceived capacity and autonomy regarding PDHP's behavioural intentions; and 3) exploring whether the RAA operates equivalently (i.e., is invariant) in male and female providers.MethodsThis national cross-sectional study was conducted in Norway. An electronic survey was distributed to 1542 dentists and dental hygienists working in the public dental health service. The survey included RAA items constructed in accordance with the recommendations for the RAA model. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to identify factors derived from the theory of RAA to predict PDHP reporting intentions.ResultsA total of 77.8% (1200) of those surveyed responded to the survey. The present study provided support for the utility of the RAA across both male and female providers in predicting their intention to report suspected child-maltreatment to the CWS. The final modified SEM model revealed that instrumental attitudes and perceived behavioural control (based on merged capacity and autonomy parameters) were the strongest predictors of intention to report, followed by the reporting of descriptive norms, injunctive norms and experiential attitudes. These factors explained 63.6% of the observed variance in the reporting intention.ConclusionsThe large amount of explained variance suggests that RAA is a well-functioning theory that predicts PDHP's reporting intentions to CWS across gender, and gives an understanding of the socio-cognitive factors involved. To strengthen reporting intention among dental personnel, this study suggests educators should focus on the value and positive consequences of reporting, the resources available and how to overcome obstacles; attention to normative expectations and individuals' feelings about reporting may also be helpful.
