Cooperation of σ-π and σ-π Conjugation in the UV/Vis and Fluorescence Spectra of 9,10-Disilylanthracene.

ABSTRACT: In 1996, we reported that silyl groups of 9,10-disilylanthracenes significantly affect the UV/Vis and fluorescence spectra. Although the results indicate that the silyl groups have strong electronic effects on anthracene, the details of the mechanisms responsible for this have not yet been clarified. This article describes the analysis of the UV/Vis and fluorescence spectra of 9,10-bis(diisopropylsilyl)anthracene by theoretical calculations. This study reveals that π conjugation of anthracene is extended by cooperation of σ-π and σ*-π* conjugation between the silyl groups and anthracene. This effect increases the transition moment of the π-π* transition of anthracene. As a result, the molecular extinction coefficient of the 1La band and the fluorescence quantum yield are increased.

UV-adVISor: Attention-Based Recurrent Neural Networks to Predict UV-Vis Spectra.

Project description:Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectra are routinely collected as part of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis systems and can be used to identify chemical reaction products by comparison to the reference spectra. Here, we present UV-adVISor as a new computational tool for predicting the UV-Vis spectra from a molecule's structure alone. UV-Vis prediction was approached as a sequence-to-sequence problem. We utilized Long-Short Term Memory and attention-based neural networks with Extended Connectivity Fingerprint Diameter 6 or molecule SMILES to generate predictive models for the UV spectra. We have produced two spectrum datasets (dataset I, N = 949, and dataset II, N = 2222) using different compound collections and spectrum acquisition methods to train, validate, and test our models. We evaluated the prediction accuracy of the complete spectra by the correspondence of wavelengths of absorbance maxima and with a series of statistical measures (the best test set median model parameters are in parentheses for model II), including RMSE (0.064), R2 (0.71), and dynamic time warping (DTW, 0.194) of the entire spectrum curve. Scrambling molecule structures with the experimental spectra during training resulted in a degraded R2, confirming the utility of the approaches for prediction. UV-adVISor is able to provide fast and accurate predictions for libraries of compounds.

Excitation spectra of dibenzoborole containing pi-electron systems: controlling the electronic spectra by changing the p(pi)-pi* conjugation.

Project description:We report time-dependent density functional theory calculations of the vertical excitation energies for the singlet states of three-coordinate 5H-dibenzoborole (DBB) derivatives and four-coordinate 5-fluoro-5H-dibenzoborole ion (FDBB) derivatives. These molecules show remarkable hypsochromic (blue) shifts in their fluorescence spectra and bathochromic (red) shifts in their absorption spectra when the bridging boron atoms change their coordination number from three to four. We constructed a series of derivatives of DBB and FDBB and studied how the energies of the electronic excitations change. The states with prominent oscillator strength in all of the DBB and FDBB derivatives show similar shifts of their excitation energies upon coordination. The three-coordinate DBB derivative 5-(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)-2,8-dimethoxy-3,7-bis[p-(N,N-diphenylamino)phenyl]-5H-dibenzo[d,b]borole has an intense absorption at 3.25 eV, which shifts in the four-coordinate FDBB derivative 5-fluro-5-(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)-2,8-dimethoxy-3,7-bis[p-(N,N-dip henylamino)phenyl]-5H-dibenzo[d,b]borole ion to 3.17 eV. The experimental absorption peaks are 3.43 and 3.31 eV, respectively. In addition, we investigated and analyzed the nature of these electronic excitations using attachment/detachment density plots, with which we characterized the changes in electron density that arose from the excitations.

Comparative dataset of experimental and computational attributes of UV/vis absorption spectra.

Project description:The ability to auto-generate databases of optical properties holds great prospects in data-driven materials discovery for optoelectronic applications. We present a cognate set of experimental and computational data that describes key features of optical absorption spectra. This includes an auto-generated database of 18,309 records of experimentally determined UV/vis absorption maxima, λmax, and associated extinction coefficients, ϵ, where present. This database was produced using the text-mining toolkit, ChemDataExtractor, on 402,034 scientific documents. High-throughput electronic-structure calculations using fast (simplified Tamm-Dancoff approach) and traditional (time-dependent) density functional theory were executed to predict λmax and oscillation strengths, f (related to ϵ) for a subset of validated compounds. Paired quantities of these computational and experimental data show strong correlations in λmax, f and ϵ, laying the path for reliable in silico calculations of additional optical properties. The total dataset of 8,488 unique compounds and a subset of 5,380 compounds with experimental and computational data, are available in MongoDB, CSV and JSON formats. These can be queried using Python, R, Java, and MATLAB, for data-driven optoelectronic materials discovery.

Two excited-state datasets for quantum chemical UV-vis spectra of organic molecules.

Project description:We present two open-source datasets that provide time-dependent density-functional tight-binding (TD-DFTB) electronic excitation spectra of organic molecules. These datasets represent predictions of UV-vis absorption spectra performed on optimized geometries of the molecules in their electronic ground state. The GDB-9-Ex dataset contains a subset of 96,766 organic molecules from the original open-source GDB-9 dataset. The ORNL_AISD-Ex dataset consists of 10,502,904 organic molecules that contain between 5 and 71 non-hydrogen atoms. The data reveals the close correlation between the magnitude of the gaps between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), and the excitation energy of the lowest singlet excited state energies quantitatively. The chemical variability of the large number of molecules was examined with a topological fingerprint estimation based on extended-connectivity fingerprints (ECFPs) followed by uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) for dimension reduction. Both datasets were generated using the DFTB+ software on the "Andes" cluster of the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF).

From (Sub)Porphyrins to (Sub)Phthalocyanines: Aromaticity Signatures in the UV-Vis Absorption Spectra.

Project description:The development of novel synthetic methods has greatly expanded the toolbox available to chemists for engineering porphyrin and phthalocyanine derivatives with precise electronic and optical properties. In this study, we focus on the UV-vis absorption characteristics of substituted phthalocyanines and their contracted analogs, subphthalocyanines, which feature nonplanar, bowl-shaped geometries. These macrocycles, which are central to numerous applications in materials science and catalysis, possess extensive π-conjugated systems that drive their unique electronic properties. We explore how the change from a metalloid (B) to a metal (Zn) and the resulting coordination environments influence the aromaticity and, consequently, the spectroscopic features of these systems. A combined computational and experimental approach reveals a direct correlation between the aromaticity of the external conjugated pathways and the Q bands in the UV-vis spectra. Our findings highlight key structural modifications that can be leveraged to fine-tune the optical properties of porphyrinoid systems, offering new pathways for the design of advanced materials and catalysts with tailored functionalities.

Project description:In this data article, the normalized emission and excitation spectra, the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra, and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of bulk-powders and nano-structured graphitic C3N4 (g-C3N4) were presented, which are helpful to get insight into the crystal and electronic structures of g-C3N4, especially on determining the energy levels and the mechanisms of luminescence originating from electron transitions. This data article is related to our recent publication (He et al., in press) [1]. The absorption, excitation and emission spectra are vital to illustrate the optoelectronic performances in terms of photoluminescence, photocatalysis, electroluminescence, etc., from the viewpoint of electron transitions intrinsically.

Machine learning prediction of UV-Vis spectra features of organic compounds related to photoreactive potential.

Project description:Machine learning (ML) algorithms were explored for the classification of the UV-Vis absorption spectrum of organic molecules based on molecular descriptors and fingerprints generated from 2D chemical structures. Training and test data (~ 75 k molecules and associated UV-Vis data) were assembled from a database with lists of experimental absorption maxima. They were labeled with positive class (related to photoreactive potential) if an absorption maximum is reported in the range between 290 and 700 nm (UV/Vis) with molar extinction coefficient (MEC) above 1000 Lmol-1 cm-1, and as negative if no such a peak is in the list. Random forests were selected among several algorithms. The models were validated with two external test sets comprising 998 organic molecules, obtaining a global accuracy up to 0.89, sensitivity of 0.90 and specificity of 0.88. The ML output (UV-Vis spectrum class) was explored as a predictor of the 3T3 NRU phototoxicity in vitro assay for a set of 43 molecules. Comparable results were observed with the classification directly based on experimental UV-Vis data in the same format.

Mesoionic tetrazolium-5-aminides: Synthesis, molecular and crystal structures, UV-vis spectra, and DFT calculations.

Project description:Tetrazolium-5-aminides have been prepared by the tert-butylation of 5-aminotetrazole and its N-methyl derivatives by the t-BuOH/HClO4 system followed by the treatment of the tetrazolium salts by alkali. The mesoionic compounds have been found to show a higher reactivity of the exocyclic N atom in comparison with 5-aminotetrazoles. The compounds reacted with 1,2-dibromoethane and 5-(methylsulfonyl)-1-phenyl-1H-tetrazole with substitution of bromine and methylsulfonyl groups giving the corresponding tetrazolium salts or conjugate aminides. The obtained mesoionic tetrazoles have been characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy, TGA/DSC analysis and for 1,3-di-tert-butyltetrazolium-5-aminide, its N,N'-ethylene-bridged bis-derivative and (1,3-di-tert-butyl-1H-tetrazol-3-ium-5-yl)(1-phenyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)amide by single crystal X-ray analysis. The structural and spectral features of the tetrazolium-5-aminides are discussed by using quantum-chemical calculations.

On the Nature of σ-σ, σ-π, and π-π Stacking in Extended Systems.

Project description:Stacking interactions have been evaluated, employing computational methods, in dimers formed by analogous aliphatic and aromatic species of increasing size. Changes in stability as the systems become larger are mostly controlled by the balance of increasing repulsion and dispersion contributions, while electrostatics plays a secondary but relevant role. The interaction energy increases as the size of the system grows, but it does much faster in π-π dimers than in σ-π complexes and more remarkably than in σ-σ dimers. The main factor behind the larger stability of aromatic dimers compared to complexes containing aliphatic molecules is related to changes in the properties of the aromatic systems due to electron delocalization leading to larger dispersion contributions. Besides, an extra stabilization in π-π complexes is due to the softening of the repulsive wall in aromatic species that allows the molecules to come closer.
