Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2 in Water by a Palladium-Containing Metallopolymer.

ABSTRACT: The palladium-salen complex was immobilized by electropolymerization onto a Pt disc electrode and applied as an electrocatalyst for the reduction of CO2 in an aqueous solution. Linear sweep voltammetry measurements and rotating disk experiments were carried out to study the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide. The onset overpotential for carbon dioxide reduction was approximately -0.22 V vs. NHE on the poly-Pd(salen) modified electrode. In addition, by combining the electrochemical study with a kinetic study, the rate-determining step of the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) was found to be the radial reduction of carbon dioxide to the CO adsorbed on the metal.

Electrocatalytic reduction of low concentration CO2.

Project description:Utilization of low concentration CO2 contained in the exhaust gases from various industries and thermal power stations without the need for energy-consuming concentration processes should be an important technology for solving global warming and the shortage of fossil resources. Here we report the direct electrocatalytic reduction of low concentration CO2 by a Re(i)-complex catalyst that possesses CO2-capturing ability in the presence of triethanolamine. The reaction rate and faradaic efficiency of CO2 reduction were almost the same when using Ar gas containing 10% CO2 or when using pure CO2 gas, and the selectivity of CO formation was very high (98% at 10% CO2). At a concentration of 1% CO2, the Re(i) complex still behaved as a good electrocatalyst; 94% selectivity of CO formation and 85% faradaic efficiency were achieved, and the rate of CO formation was 67% compared to that when using pure CO2 gas. The electrocatalysis was due to the efficient insertion of CO2 into the Re(i)-O bond in fac-[Re(dmb)(CO)3{OC2H4N(C2H4OH)2}] (dmb = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine).

Copper Metallopolymer Catalyst for the Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER).

Project description:Conjugated polymers with stabilizing coordination units for single-site catalytic centers are excellent candidates to minimize the use of expensive noble metal electrode materials. In this study, conjugated metallopolymer, POS[Cu], was synthesized and fully characterized by means of spectroscopical, electrochemical, and photophysical methods. The copper metallopolymer was found to be highly active for the electrocatalytic hydrogen generation (HER) in an aqueous solution at pH 7.4 and overpotentials at 300 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Compared to the platinum electrode, the obtained overpotential is only 100 mV higher. The photoelectrochemical tests revealed that the complexation of the conjugated polymer POS turned its intrinsically electron-accepting (p-type) properties into an electron-donor (n-type) with photocurrent responses ten times higher than the organic photoelectrode.

Click-Derived Triazoles and Triazolylidenes of Manganese for Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2.

Project description:A series of new fac-[Mn(L)(CO)3Br] complexes where L is a bidentate chelating ligand containing mixed mesoionic triazolylidene-pyridine (MIC^py, 1), triazolylidene-triazole (MIC^trz, 2), and triazole-pyridine (trz^py, 3) ligands have been prepared and fully characterized, including the single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of 1 and 2. The abilities of 1-3 and complex fac-[Mn(MIC^MIC)(CO)3Br] (4) to catalyze the electroreduction of CO2 has been assessed for the first time. It was found that all complexes displayed a current increase under CO2 atmosphere, being 3 and 4 the most active complexes. Complex 3, bearing a N^N-based ligand exhibited a good efficiency and an excellent selectivity for reducing CO2 to CO in the presence of 1.0 M of water, at low overpotential. Interestingly, complex 4 containing the strongly electron donating di-imidazolylidene ligand exhibited comparable activity to 3, when the experiments were performed in neat acetonitrile at slightly higher overpotential (-1.86 vs. -2.14 V).

Studies of cobalt-mediated electrocatalytic CO2 reduction using a redox-active ligand.

Project description:The cobalt complex [Co(III)N4H(Br)2](+) (N4H = 2,12-dimethyl-3,7,11,17-tetraazabicyclo-[11.3.1]-heptadeca-1(7),2,11,13,15-pentaene) was used for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction in wet MeCN with a glassy carbon working electrode. When water was employed as the proton source (10 M in MeCN), CO was produced (fCO= 45% ± 6.4) near the Co(I/0) redox couple for [Co(III)N4H(Br)2](+) (E1/2 = -1.88 V FeCp2(+/0)) with simultaneous H2 evolution (fH2= 30% ± 7.8). Moreover, we successfully demonstrated that the catalytically active species is homogeneous through the use of control experiments and XPS studies of the working glassy-carbon electrodes. As determined by cyclic voltammetry, CO2 catalysis occurred near the formal Co(I/0)redox couple, and attempts were made to isolate the triply reduced compound ("[Co(0)N4H]"). Instead, the doubly reduced ("Co(I)") compounds [CoN4] and [CoN4H(MeCN)](+) were isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Their molecular structures prompted DFT studies to illuminate details regarding their electronic structure. The results indicate that reducing equivalents are stored on the ligand, implicating redox noninnocence in the ligands for H2 evolution and CO2 reduction electrocatalysis.

Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to Acetic Acid by a Molecular Manganese Corrole Complex.

Project description:The controlled electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to value added chemicals is an important strategy in terms of renewable energy technologies. Therefore, the development of efficient and stable catalysts in an aqueous environment is of great importance. In this context, we focused on synthesizing and studying a molecular MnIII -corrole complex, which is modified on the three meso-positions with polyethylene glycol moieties for direct and selective production of acetic acid from CO2 . Electrochemical reduction of MnIII leads to an electroactive MnII species, which binds CO2 and stabilizes the reduced intermediates. This catalyst allows to electrochemically reduce CO2 to acetic acid in a moderate acidic aqueous medium (pH 6) with a selectivity of 63 % and a turn over frequency (TOF) of 8.25 h-1 , when immobilized on a carbon paper (CP) electrode. In terms of high selectivity towards acetate, we propose the formation and reduction of an oxalate type intermediate, stabilized at the MnIII -corrole center.

How palladium inhibits CO poisoning during electrocatalytic formic acid oxidation and carbon dioxide reduction.

Project description:Development of reversible and stable catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 is of great interest. Here, we elucidate the atomistic details of how a palladium electrocatalyst inhibits CO poisoning during both formic acid oxidation to carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide reduction to formic acid. We compare results obtained with a platinum single-crystal electrode modified with and without a single monolayer of palladium. We combine (high-scan-rate) cyclic voltammetry with density functional theory to explain the absence of CO poisoning on the palladium-modified electrode. We show how the high formate coverage on the palladium-modified electrode protects the surface from poisoning during formic acid oxidation, and how the adsorption of CO precursor dictates the delayed poisoning during CO2 reduction. The nature of the hydrogen adsorbed on the palladium-modified electrode is considerably different from platinum, supporting a model to explain the reversibility of this reaction. Our results help in designing catalysts for which CO poisoning needs to be avoided.

Ultrathin bismuth nanosheets from in situ topotactic transformation for selective electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to formate.

Project description:Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction to formate is desirable but challenging. Current attention is mostly focused on tin-based materials, which, unfortunately, often suffer from limited Faradaic efficiency. The potential of bismuth in carbon dioxide reduction has been suggested but remained understudied. Here, we report that ultrathin bismuth nanosheets are prepared from the in situ topotactic transformation of bismuth oxyiodide nanosheets. They process single crystallinity and enlarged surface areas. Such an advantageous nanostructure affords the material with excellent electrocatalytic performance for carbon dioxide reduction to formate. High selectivity (~100%) and large current density are measured over a broad potential, as well as excellent durability for >10 h. Its selectivity for formate is also understood by density functional theory calculations. In addition, bismuth nanosheets were coupled with an iridium-based oxygen evolution electrocatalyst to achieve efficient full-cell electrolysis. When powered by two AA-size alkaline batteries, the full cell exhibits impressive Faradaic efficiency and electricity-to-formate conversion efficiency.

Hierarchically porous Au nanostructures with interconnected channels for efficient mass transport in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Project description:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction is a promising way to provide renewable energy from gaseous CO2 The development of nanostructures improves energy efficiency and selectivity for value-added chemicals, but complex nanostructures limit the CO2 conversion rates due to poor mass transport during vigorous electrolysis. Herein, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically porous Au comprising interconnected macroporous channels (200-300 nm) and nanopores (∼10 nm) fabricated via proximity-field nanopatterning. The interconnected macropores and nanopores enable efficient mass transport and large active areas, respectively. The roles of each pore network are investigated using reliable 3D nanostructures possessing controlled pore distribution and size. The hierarchical nanostructured electrodes show a high CO selectivity of 85.8% at a low overpotential of 0.264 V and efficient mass activity that is maximum 3.96 times higher than that of dealloyed nanoporous Au. Hence, the systematic model study shows the proposed hierarchical nanostructures have important value in increasing the efficiency of expensive Au.

Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction and H2 Evolution by a Copper (II) Complex with Redox-Active Ligand.

Project description:The process of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction and H2 evolution from water, regarding renewable energy, has become one of the global solutions to problems related to energy consumption and environmental degradation. In order to promote the electrocatalytic reactivity, the study of the role of ligands in catalysis has attracted more and more attention. Herein, we have developed a copper (II) complex with redox-active ligand [Cu(L1)2NO3]NO3 (1, L1 = 2-(6-methoxypyridin-2-yl)-6-nitro-1h-benzo [D] imidazole). X-ray crystallography reveals that the Cu ion in cation of complex 1 is coordinated by two redox ligands L1 and one labile nitrate ligand, which could assist the metal center for catalysis. The longer Cu-O bond between the metal center and the labile nitrate ligand would break to provide an open coordination site for the binding of the substrate during the catalytic process. The electrocatalytic investigation combined with DFT calculations demonstrate that the copper (II) complex could homogeneously catalyze CO2 reduction towards CO and H2 evolution, and this could occur with great performance due to the cooperative effect between the central Cu (II) ion and the redox- active ligand L1. Further, we discovered that the added proton source H2O and TsOH·H2O (p-Toluenesulfonic acid) could greatly enhance its electrocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction and H2 evolution, respectively.

CuZnAl-Oxide Nanopyramidal Mesoporous Materials for the Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction to Syngas: Tuning of H2/CO Ratio.

Project description:Inspired by the knowledge of the thermocatalytic CO2 reduction process, novel nanocrystalline CuZnAl-oxide based catalysts with pyramidal mesoporous structures are here proposed for the CO2 electrochemical reduction under ambient conditions. The XPS analyses revealed that the co-presence of ZnO and Al2O3 into the Cu-based catalyst stabilize the CuO crystalline structure and introduce basic sites on the ternary as-synthesized catalyst. In contrast, the as-prepared CuZn- and Cu-based materials contain a higher amount of superficial Cu0 and Cu1+ species. The CuZnAl-catalyst exhibited enhanced catalytic performance for the CO and H2 production, reaching a Faradaic efficiency (FE) towards syngas of almost 95% at -0.89 V vs. RHE and a remarkable current density of up to 90 mA cm-2 for the CO2 reduction at -2.4 V vs. RHE. The physico-chemical characterizations confirmed that the pyramidal mesoporous structure of this material, which is constituted by a high pore volume and small CuO crystals, plays a fundamental role in its low diffusional mass-transfer resistance. The CO-productivity on the CuZnAl-catalyst increased at more negative applied potentials, leading to the production of syngas with a tunable H2/CO ratio (from 2 to 7), depending on the applied potential. These results pave the way to substitute state-of-the-art noble metals (e.g., Ag, Au) with this abundant and cost-effective catalyst to produce syngas. Moreover, the post-reaction analyses demonstrated the stabilization of Cu2O species, avoiding its complete reduction to Cu0 under the CO2 electroreduction conditions.
