Preparation of Hollow Niobium Oxide Nanospheres with Enhanced Catalytic Activity for Oxidative Desulfurization.

ABSTRACT: Hollow niobium oxide nanospheres were successfully synthesized by using prepared three-dimensional (3D) mesoporous carbon as the hard template. The 3D mesoporous carbon materials were prepared by using histidine as the carbon source and silica microspheres as the hard template. The samples were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and other methods. The results show that the prepared niobium oxide nanospheres have a hollow spherical structure with an outer diameter of about 45 nm and possess a high specific surface area of 134.3 m2·g-1. Furthermore, the 3D mesoporous carbon materials have a typical porous structure with a high specific surface area of 893 m2·g-1. The hollow niobium oxide nanospheres exhibit high catalytic activity in oxidative desulfurization. Under optimal reaction conditions, the DBT conversion rate of the simulated oil is as high as 98.5%. Finally, a possible reaction mechanism is proposed.

Hollow ZnxCd1-xS nanospheres with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light.

Project description:Formation of solid solutions is a good strategy to acquire materials with special properties and bring forth new type of applications or enhance the performance of currently existing devices. In this study, hollow ZnxCd1-xS nanospheres with different molar ratios were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. The products were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. It was found that the photocatalysis performance of the as-prepared samples could be enhanced by formation of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. In addition, their photocatalytic activities are dependent on the Zn/Cd molar ratios and nanostructures of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. Hollow Zn0.2Cd0.8S spheres exhibit extremely high photocatalytic activity and good re-usability, and the photocatalytic conversion of RhB reaches as high as 96% after 50 min of irradiation.

A novel route for preparation of hollow carbon nanospheres without introducing template.

Project description:UNLABELLED:A newly developed route for the synthesis of hollow carbon nanospheres without introducing template under hydrothermal conditions was reported. Hollow carbon nanospheres with the diameter of about 100 nm were synthesized using alginate as reagent only. Many instruments were applied to characterize the morphologies and structures of carbon hollow nanospheres, such as XRD, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The possible formation and growth mechanism of carbon hollow spheres were discussed on the basis of the investigation of reaction influence factors, such as temperature, time, and content. The findings would be useful for the synthesis of more materials with hollow structure and for the potential use in many aspects. The loading of SnO(2) on the surface of carbon hollow spheres was processed, and its PL property was also characterized. Hollow Sodium Tungsten Bronze (Na0.15WO3) Nanospheres: Preparation, Characterization, and Their Adsorption Properties.

Project description:We report herein a facile method for the preparation of sodium tungsten bronzes hollow nanospheres using hydrogen gas bubbles as reactant for chemical reduction of tungstate to tungsten and as template for the formation of hollow nanospheres at the same time. The chemical composition and the crystalline state of the as-prepared hollow Na0.15WO3nanospheres were characterized complementarily, and the hollow structure formation mechanism was proposed. The hollow Na0.15WO3nanospheres showed large Brunauer-Emment-Teller specific area (33.8 m2 g-1), strong resistance to acids, and excellent ability to remove organic molecules such as dye and proteins from aqueous solutions. These illustrate that the hollow nanospheres of Na0.15WO3should be a useful adsorbent.

Preparation and Enhanced Catalytic Hydrogenation Activity of Sb/Palygorskite (PAL) Nanoparticles.

Project description:A Sb/palygorskite (PAL) composite was synthesized by a facile solvothermal process and applied in catalytic hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol for the first time. It was found that the Sb nanoparticles with the sizes of 2-5 nm were well dispersed on the fiber of PAL, while partial aggregated Sb nanoparticles with sizes smaller than 200 nm were also loaded on the PAL. The Sb/PAL composite with 9.7% Sb mass amounts showed outstanding catalytic performance by raising the p-nitrophenol conversion rate to 88.3% within 5 min, which was attributed to the synergistical effect of Sb and PAL nanoparticles facilitating the adsorption and catalytic hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol.

Novel hollow titanium dioxide nanospheres with antimicrobial activity against resistant bacteria.

Project description:The search for and synthesis of new antimicrobial nanostructures is important to reduce microbial incidence that induces infectious diseases and to aid in the antibiotic resistance crisis, which are two of the most pressing issues in global public health. In this work, novel, hollow, calcined titanium dioxide nanospheres (CSTiO2) were successfully synthesized for the first time through the combination of electrospinning and atomic layer deposition techniques. Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) electrosprayed spherical particles were double-coated with alumina and titanium dioxide, and after a calcination process, hollow nanospheres were obtained with a radius of approximately 345 nm and shell thickness of 17 nm. The structural characterization was performed using electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray diffraction evidenced an anatase titanium dioxide crystalline structure. Thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy studies demonstrated the absence of polymer residue after the calcination process. The antimicrobial properties of the developed CSTiO2 hollow nanospheres were evaluated against different bacteria, including resistant E. coli and S. aureus strains, and when compared to commercial TiO2 nanoparticles, CSTiO2 nanospheres exhibited superior performance. In addition, the positive effect of UV irradiation on the antimicrobial activity was demonstrated.

A general one-pot strategy for the synthesis of Au@multi-oxide yolk@shell nanospheres with enhanced catalytic performance.

Project description:By integrating redox self-assembly and redox etching processes, we report a general one-pot strategy for the synthesis of Au@multi-M x O y (M = Co, Ce, Fe, and Sn) yolk@shell nanospheres. Without any additional protecting molecule or reductant, the whole reaction is a clean redox process that happens among the inorganic metal salts in an alkaline aqueous solution. By using this method, Au@Co3O4/CeO2 (Au@Co-Ce), Au@Co3O4/Fe2O3 (Au@Co-Fe), and Au@CeO2/SnO2 (Au@Ce-Sn) yolk@shell nanospheres with binary oxides as shells, Au@Co3O4/CeO2/Fe2O3 (Au@Co-Ce-Fe) yolk@shell nanospheres with ternary oxides as shells and Au@Co3O4/CeO2/Fe2O3/SnO2 (Au@Co-Ce-Fe-Sn) yolk@shell nanospheres with quaternary oxides as shells can be obtained. Subsequently, the catalytic CO oxidation was selected as the catalytic model, and the Au@Co-Ce system was chosen as the catalyst. It was found that the catalytic activity of Au@Co-Ce yolk@shell nanospheres can be optimized by altering the relative proportion of Co and Ce oxides.

Design and Preparation of Novel Nitro-Oxide-Grafted Nanospheres with Enhanced Hydrogen Bonding Interaction for <i>O</i>-GlcNAc Analysis.

Project description:As an essential modification, O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) modulates the functions of many proteins. However, site-specific characterization of O-GlcNAcylated proteins remains challenging. Herein, an innovative material grafted with nitro-oxide (N→O) groups was designed for high affinity enrichment for O-GlcNAc peptides from native proteins. By testing with synthetic O-GlcNAc peptides and standard proteins, the synthesized material exhibited high affinity and selectivity. Based on the material prepared, we developed a workflow for site-specific analysis of O-GlcNAcylated proteins in complex samples. We performed O-GlcNAc proteomics with the PANC-1 cell line, a representative model for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. In total 364 O-GlcNAc peptides from 267 proteins were identified from PANC-1 cells. Among them, 183 proteins were newly found to be O-GlcNAcylated in humans (with 197 O-GlcNAc sites newly reported). The materials and methods can be facilely applied for site-specific O-GlcNAc proteomics in other complex samples.

Enhanced hot-carrier luminescence in multilayer reduced graphene oxide nanospheres.

Project description:We report a method to promote photoluminescence emission in graphene materials by enhancing carrier scattering instead of directly modifying band structure in multilayer reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanospheres. We intentionally curl graphene layers to form nanospheres by reducing graphene oxide with spherical polymer templates to manipulate the carrier scattering. These nanospheres produce hot-carrier luminescence with more than ten-fold improvement of emission efficiency as compared to planar nanosheets. With increasing excitation power, hot-carrier luminescence from nanospheres exhibits abnormal spectral redshift with dynamic feature associated to the strengthened electron-phonon coupling. These experimental results can be well understood by considering the screened Coulomb interactions. With increasing carrier density, the reduced screening effect promotes carrier scattering which enhances hot-carrier emission from such multilayer rGO nanospheres. This carrier-scattering scenario is further confirmed by pump-probe measurements.

SiO<sub>2</sub>@AuAg/PDA hybrid nanospheres with photo-thermally enhanced synergistic antibacterial and catalytic activity.

Project description:Wastewater discharged from industrial, agricultural and livestock production contains a large number of harmful bacteria and organic pollutants, which usually cause serious harm to human health. Therefore, it is urgent to find a "one-stone-two-birds" strategy with good antimicrobial and pollutant degradation activity for treating waste water. In this paper, SiO2@AuAg/Polydopamine (SiO2@AuAg/PDA) core/shell nanospheres, which possessed synergistic "Ag+-release-photothermal" antibacterial and catalytic behaviors, have been successfully prepared via a simple in situ redox polymerization method. The SiO2@AuAg/PDA nanospheres showed good catalytic activity in reducing 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol (0.576 min-1 mg-1). Since the AuAg nanoclusters contain both gold and silver elements, they provided a high photothermal conversion efficiency (48.1%). Under NIR irradiation (808 nm, 2.5 W-2), the catalytic kinetics were improved by 2.2 times. Besides the intrinsic Ag+-release, the photothermal behavior originating from the AuAg bimetallic nanoclusters and the PDA component of SiO2@AuAg/PDA also critically improved the antibacterial performance. Both E. coli and S. aureus could be basically killed by SiO2@AuAg/PDA nanospheres at a concentration of 90 μg mL-1 under NIR irradiation. This "Ag+-release-photothermal" coupled sterilization offers a straightforward and effective approach to antimicrobial therapy, and further exhibits high potential in nanomedicine for combating bacterial contamination in environmental treatment and biological fields.
