Siloxane-Based Main-Chain Poly(ionic liquid)s via a Debus-Radziszewski Reaction.

ABSTRACT: Herein, we synthesized a series of siloxane-based poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) with imidazolium-type species in the main chain via the multicomponent Debus-Radziszewski reaction. We employed oligodimethylsiloxane diamine precursors to integrate flexible spacers in the polymer backbone and ultimately succeeded in obtaining main-chain PILs with low glass transition temperatures (T _g s) in the range of -40 to -18 °C. Such PILs were combined with conventional hydrophobic vinylimidazolium-based PILs for the fabrication of porous membranes via interpolyelectrolyte complexation with poly(acrylic acid), which leads to enhanced mechanical performance in the tensile testing measurements. This study will enrich the structure library of main-chain PILs and open up more opportunities for potential industrial applications of porous imidazolium-based membranes.

Design of Clickable Ionic Liquid Monomers to Enhance Ionic Conductivity for Main-Chain 1,2,3-Triazolium-Based Poly(Ionic Liquid)s.

Project description:A series of clickable α-azide-ω-alkyne ionic liquid (IL) monomers with an ethylene oxide spacer were developed and applied to the synthesis of 1,2,3-triazolium-based poly(ionic liquid)s (TPILs) with high ionic conductivities via one-step thermal azide-alkyne cycloaddition click chemistry. Subsequently, the number of IL moieties in the resultant TPILs was further increased by N-alkylation of the 1,2,3-triazole-based backbones of the TPILs with a quarternizing reagent. This strategy affords the preparation of TPILs having either one or two 1,2,3-triazolium cations with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anions in a monomer unit. Synthesis of the TPILs was confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The effects of the length of the ethylene oxide spacer and the number of IL moieties in the IL monomer unit on the physicochemical properties of the TPILs were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and impedance spectroscopy. The introduction of a longer ethylene oxide spacer or an increase in the number of IL moieties in the monomer unit resulted in TPILs with lower glass-transition temperatures and higher ionic conductivities. The highest ionic conductivity achieved in this study was 2.0 × 10-5 S cm-1 at 30 °C. These results suggest that the design of the IL monomer provides the resultant polymer with high chain flexibility and a high IL density, and so it is effective for preparing TPILs with high ionic conductivities.

One-pot synthesis of poly(ionic liquid)s with 1,2,3-triazolium-based backbones via clickable ionic liquid monomers.

Project description:Clickable α-azide-ω-alkyne ionic liquid monomers were developed and subsequently applied to the one-pot synthesis of ionically conducting poly(ionic liquid)s with 1,2,3-triazolium-based backbones through a click chemistry strategy. This approach does not require the use of solvents, polymerisation mediators, or catalysts. The obtained poly(ionic liquid)s were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and impedance spectroscopy analysis. Moreover, these poly(ionic liquid)s were cross-linked via N-alkylation with a dianion quarternizing agent to achieve enhanced ionic conductivity and mechanical strength. The resulting free-standing films showed a Young's modulus up to 4.8 MPa and ionic conductivities up to 4.60 × 10-8 S cm-1 at 30 °C. This facile synthetic strategy has the potential to expand the availability of poly(ionic liquid)s and promote the development of functional materials.

Poly(ionic liquid)s Based Brush Type Nanomotor.

Project description:A brush type nanomotor was fabricated via assembly assistant polymerization of poly(ionic liquid) and surface grafting polymerization. The method for large-scale fabrication of brush nanomotors with soft surfaces is described. These soft locomotive particles are based on core-shell brush nanoparticles assembled from poly(ionic liquid) as core and thermoresponsive PNIPAM as brush shells on which platinum nanoparticle (PtNP) were grown in situ. The particles show non-Brownian motion in H₂O₂ solution.

Tuning the Electrocatalytic Performance of Ionic Liquid Modified Pt Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction via Cationic Chain Engineering.

Project description:Modifying Pt catalysts using hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs) has been demonstrated to be a facile approach for boosting the performance of Pt catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This work aims to deepen the understanding and initiate a rational molecular tuning of ILs for improved activity and stability. To this end, Pt/C catalysts were modified using a variety of 1-methyl-3-alkylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C n C1im][NTf2], n = 2-10) ILs with varying alkyl chain lengths in imidazolium cations, and the electrocatalytic properties (e.g., electrochemically active surface area, catalytic activity, and stability) of the resultant catalysts were systematically investigated. We found that ILs with long cationic chains (C6, C10) efficiently suppressed the formation of nonreactive oxygenated species on Pt; however, at the same time they blocked active Pt sites and led to a lower electrochemically active surface area. It is also disclosed that the catalytic activity strongly correlates with the alkyl chain length of cations, and a distinct dependence of intrinsic activity on the alkyl chain length was identified, with the maximum activity obtained on Pt/C-[C4C1im][NTf2]. The optimum arises from the counterbalance between more efficient suppression of oxygenated species formation on Pt surfaces and more severe passivation of Pt surfaces with elongation of the alkyl chain length in imidazolium cations. Moreover, the presence of an IL can also improve the electrochemical stability of Pt catalysts by suppressing the Pt dissolution, as revealed by combined identical-location transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and in situ inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analyses.

Poly(ionic liquid) Based Composite Electrolytes for Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Polymerized ionic liquids (PIL) are an interesting substance class, which is discussed to transfer the outstanding properties and tunability of ionic liquids into a solid material. In this study we extend our previous research on ammonium based PIL and discuss the influence of additives and their usability as polymer electrolyte membranes for lithium ion batteries. The polymer electrolyte is thereby used as replacement for the commercially widespread system of a separator that is soaked with liquid electrolyte. The influence of the material composition on the ionic conductivity (via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and the diffusion coefficients (via pulsed-field-gradient nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) were studied and cell tests with adapted membrane materials were performed. High amounts of the additional ionic liquid (IL) MPPyrr-TFSI (1-methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) increased the ionic conductivity of the materials up to 1.3·10-4 S·cm-1 but made the usage of a cross-linker necessary to obtain mechanically stable membranes. The application of liquid electrolyte mixtures with ethylene carbonate (EC) and MPPyrr-TFSI decreased ionic conductivity values down to the 10-9 S·cm-1 range, but increased 7Li diffusion coefficients with increasing amounts of EC up to 1.7·10-10 m2·s-1. Cell tests with two membrane mixtures proofed that it is possible to build electrolyte membranes on basis of the polymerized ionic liquids, but also showed that further research is necessary to ensure stable and efficient cell cycling.

Fast Gelation of Poly(ionic liquid)-Based Injectable Antibacterial Hydrogels.

Project description:Traditional antibacterial hydrogels have a broad-spectrum bactericidal effect and are widely used as wound dressings. However, the biological toxicity and drug resistance of these antibacterial hydrogels cannot meet the requirements of long-term clinical application. Imidazolium poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) are polymeric antibacterial agents exhibiting strong antibacterial properties, as they contain a strong positive charge. In this study, two imidazolium PILs, namely poly(N-butylimidazolium propiolic acid sodium) (PBP) and poly(N-(3,6-dioxaoctane) imidazolium propiolic acid sodium) (PDP), as high efficiency antibacterial agents, were synthesized by polycondensation reaction. Then, the PILs were compounded with polyethylene glycol (PEG) by a thiol-yne click reaction to prepare injectable antibacterial hydrogels. An in vitro assay showed that the injectable antibacterial hydrogels could not only quickly kill Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), but also had low toxicity for human skin fibroblasts cells (HSFs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), respectively. Additionally, the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) inflammation model revealed that the injectable antibacterial hydrogels also had anti-inflammatory effects, which would be advantageous to accelerate wound healing.

Preparation of Thermo-Responsive Poly(ionic liquid)s-Based Nanogels via One-Step Cross-Linking Copolymerization.

Project description:In this study, thermo-responsive polymeric nanogels were facilely prepared via one-step cross-linking copolymerization of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate/divinylbenzene and ionic liquid (IL)-based monomers, 1,n-dialkyl-3,3'-bis-1-vinyl imidazolium bromides ([CnVIm]Br; n = 6, 8, 12) in selective solvents. The results revealed that stable and blue opalescent biimidazolium (BIm)-based nanogel solutions could be obtained without any precipitation when the copolymerizations were conducted in methanol. Most importantly, these novel nanogels were thermo-response, and could reversibly transform to precipitation in methanol with temperature changes. Turbidity analysis and dynamic light scatting (DLS) measurement illustrated that PIL-based nanogel solutions presented the phase transform with upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in the range of 5-25 °C. The nanogels were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, BIm-based nanogels could also be used as highly active catalysts in the cycloaddition reaction of CO₂ and epoxides. As a result, our attributes build a robust platform suitable for the preparation of polymeric nanomaterials, as well as CO₂ conversion.

Ionic liquid-loaded triazine-based magnetic nanoparticles for promoting multicomponent reaction.

Project description:A novel hybrid magnetic ionic-liquid as a heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized by hybridization of imidazolium based-ionic liquid onto the nitrogen rich magnetic nanocomposite. The resulting catalyst (n-Fe3O4@SiO2-TA-SO3H IL) has two advantages besides recyclability: (i) high capacity of functional-SO3H group with imidazolium-IL cation for promoting symmetric and asymmetric Hantzsch reaction and (ii) easy recovery. Caused by the polymeric and magnetic nature of the n-Fe3O4@SiO2-TA-SO3H IL, large quantities of acidic groups were bound to the n-Fe3O4@SiO2-TA surface, which reduced the catalyst mass applied to the catalytic reaction. Moreover, superior catalytic performance and outstanding recyclability of n-Fe3O4@SiO2-TA-SO3H IL in mild condition make this method a green pathway for manufacture of satisfactory chemicals.

Antibacterial and Angiogenic Poly(ionic liquid) Hydrogels.

Project description:Wounds, particularly under low-hydration conditions, require more time to repair successfully. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop wound dressings that can accelerate wound healing. Hydrogels, which can maintain a moist environment around the wound and allow gas to pass through the material, act as antibacterial hydrogels as dressings and have great application value in the treatment of wounds. In addition, wound dressings (hydrogels) containing antibacterial capacity have lasting antibacterial effects and reduce damage to cells. In this work, we firstly synthesized two antibacterial agents: imidazolium poly(ionic liquids) containing sulfhydryl (Imidazole-SH) and ε-Poly(lysine) containing SH (EPL-SH). Then, lysine as a cross-linking agent, by "thiol-ene" click reaction, was mixed with Deferoxamine (DFO) to prepare the antibacterial hydrogels. The in vitro assays showed that the hydrogels could effectively kill Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In addition, it also could reduce the inflammatory response produced by Lipopolysaccharide (LPS). More importantly, according to the transwell and angiogenesis assays, DFO-incorporated hydrogels promoted the migration and vascular repair of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). All the results revealed that the hydrogels provided new strategies for wound dressings.

Poly(Ionic Liquid) Nanoparticles Selectively Disrupt Biomembranes.

Project description:Polymer-based nanoparticles have an increasing presence in research due to their attractive properties, such as flexible surface functionality design and the ability to scale up production. Poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) nanoparticles of size below 50 nm are very unique in terms of their high charge density and internal onion-like morphology. The interaction between PIL nanoparticles and giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) of various surface charge densities is investigated. GUVs represent a convenient model system as they mimic the size and curvature of plasma membranes, while simultaneously offering direct visualization of the membrane response under the microscope. Incubating PIL nanoparticles with GUVs results in poration of the lipid membrane in a concentration- and charge-dependent manner. A critical poration concentration of PILs is located and the interactions are found to be analogous to those of antimicrobial peptides. Microbial mimetic membranes are already affected at submicromolar PIL concentrations where contrast loss is observed due to sugar exchange across the membrane, while at high concentrations the collapse of vesicles is observed. Finally, a confocal microscopy-based approach assessing the particle permeation through the membrane is reported and a mechanism based on bilayer frustration and pore stabilization via particle integration in the membrane is proposed.
