Apart from personal- and societal-level factors, we propose that collectivism also plays a role in the spread of COVID-19. Project description:BackgroundDiet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are rapidly increasing worldwide and constitute one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity. Improving population diets can play an important role in preventing and managing the diseases. Effective and efficient interventions are needed to promote healthy eating behaviors among people. The objective of this review will be to evaluate the effectiveness of social marketing-based interventions to promote healthy nutrition behaviors.MethodThe following electronic databases will be searched from January 1990 onwards: PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and CENTRAL. We will include randomized and non-randomized trials, quasi-experimental studies, observational studies (e.g., cohort, cross-sectional, and before and after studies) evaluating the social marketing-based intervention. The primary outcomes will be nutritional behaviors. Secondary outcomes will include the quality of life, nutritional status, and weight status. Two reviewers will independently screen all citations, full-text articles, and abstract data. The study methodological quality (or bias) will be appraised using an appropriate tool. If feasible, we will conduct random-effects meta-analysis. Additional analyses will be conducted to explore the potential sources of heterogeneity (e.g., age, sex, and socio-economic condition).DiscussionThis study will summarize the evidence regarding the interventions' components, implementation methods, and effectiveness of interventions based on the social marketing framework to promote healthy nutrition behaviors. This review can provide policymakers with the information needed to make decisions and plan to promote healthy eating behaviors and understand the factors influencing the implementation of these programs.Systematic review registrationCRD42020163972.

Project description:Community misconception of what causes cancer is an important consideration when devising communication strategies around cancer prevention, while those initiating social marketing campaigns must decide whether to target the general population or to tailor messages for different audiences. This paper investigates the relationships between demographic characteristics, identification of selected cancer risk factors, and associated protective behaviours, to inform audience segmentation for cancer prevention social marketing.Data for this cross-sectional study (n = 3301) are derived from Cancer Council New South Wales' 2013 Cancer Prevention Survey. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression models were used to investigate the relationship between respondent demographic characteristics and identification of each of seven cancer risk factors; demographic characteristics and practice of the seven 'protective' behaviours associated with the seven cancer risk factors; and identification of cancer risk factors and practising the associated protective behaviours, controlling for demographic characteristics.More than 90% of respondents across demographic groups identified sun exposure and smoking cigarettes as moderate or large cancer risk factors. Around 80% identified passive smoking as a moderate/large risk factor, and 40-60% identified being overweight or obese, drinking alcohol, not eating enough vegetables and not eating enough fruit. Women and older respondents were more likely to identify most cancer risk factors as moderate/large, and to practise associated protective behaviours. Education was correlated with identification of smoking as a moderate/large cancer risk factor, and with four of the seven protective behaviours. Location (metropolitan/regional) and country of birth (Australia/other) were weak predictors of identification and of protective behaviours. Identification of a cancer risk factor as moderate/large was a significant predictor for five out of seven associated cancer-protective behaviours, controlling for demographic characteristics.These findings suggest a role for both audience segmentation and whole-of-population approaches in cancer-prevention social marketing campaigns. Targeted campaigns can address beliefs of younger people and men about cancer risk factors. Traditional population campaigns can enhance awareness of being overweight, alcohol consumption, and poor vegetable and fruit intake as cancer risk factors.

Project description:BackgroundThe likelihood of COVID-19 spreading from one individual to another is impacted by personal factors, preventive actions taken, and the quantity and length of exposure. Social media instantly shares health information with the public so medical professionals can interact with them.MethodsThe review used Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) checklist. We retrieve articles by using keywords on Pub Med, Cochrane Library, and grey literatures. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument was used to check the quality of articles. The main qualitative synthesis was including comments related to the characteristics of the studied populations, the study period, and the main results obtained from the social media platforms.ResultThis study includes 32 studies conducted in 20 countries globally. Most of the studies discussed that during the pandemics different types of social medias were utilized to provide knowledge to change the attitude of the people and helps to practices COVID-19 preventive behaviors. By enabling people to seek and share knowledge, socialize, and find pleasure, social media use encourages people to adopt preventive behaviors. This review demonstrated a substantial relationship between higher levels of precautionary behaviors and factors such as educational status, knowledge, fear, and reading medical pages on social media. According to the studies, watching videos is a reliable means to get accurate information, and watching animated films posted on social media can help people learn more about COVID-19 preventive strategies.ConclusionIn these urgent times, social media could even help with quick information availability; misinformation or inadequate understanding can cause misunderstandings within the community. This analysis revealed that following medical pages on social media, having knowledge, feeling afraid, and having an educational background were all strongly correlated with greater levels of aware preventive behavior. Therefore, it is advised for policy makers to develop social behavioral change health communication strategies, guidelines on COVID-19 prevention behaviors. Health care providers should prepare health learning materials, and provide accurate, updated and timely information using all forms of social media to correct mis- information, misperceptions, depression, and anxiety for better control of the pandemics. Future research shall focus on evaluating effectiveness of each social media platform interventions during such emergency crisis.

Project description:BackgroundThe association between social capital and preventive behaviors against COVID-19 remains controversial. We examined the association between social capital and preventive behaviors against COVID-19 at country level.MethodsThe data on country-level social capital (i.e., social trust, group affiliations, civic responsibility, and confidence in state institutions) was obtained from a previous literature based on World Value Survey. Preventive behaviors were calculated as the percentage of people in a country who took COVID-19 preventive behaviors (i.e., physical distancing, hand hygiene, and the use of face mask) from an international survey of Facebook users, from July to October 2020 (207 data points for 9 waves of 23 countries). The scores on social capital were standardized. The association was investigated with multilevel linear regression analysis.ResultsHigh civic responsibility (per 1 standard deviation, SD) was associated with low percentage points of physical distancing (β = -4.66, 95% confidence interval, CI: 7.23, -2.09), hand hygiene (β = -2.88, 95% CI: 3.98, -1.78) and the use of face mask (β = -3.95, 95% CI: 5.29, -2.62). Group affiliations were associated with high percentage points of physical distancing (β = 2.96, 95% CI: 0.35, 5.58) and the use of face mask (β = 1.80, 95% CI: 0.45, 3.16). Social trust had significant positive association with performing hand hygiene (β = 1.22, 95% CI: 0.09, 2.35).ConclusionsThese results suggested that in countries with higher levels of civic responsibility, preventive behaviors should be more intensified during a pandemic.

Project description:BackgroundAccording to a recent paper by Gelfand et al., COVID-19 infection and case mortality rates are closely connected to the strength of social norms: "Tighter" cultures that abide by strict social norms are more successful in combating the pandemic than "looser" cultures that are more permissive. However, countries with similar levels of cultural tightness exhibit big differences in mortality rates. We are investigating potential explanations for this fact. Using data from Germany and Japan-two "tight" countries with very different infection and mortality rates-we examined how differences in socio-demographic and other determinants explain differences in individual preventive attitudes and behaviors.MethodsWe compared preventive attitudes and behaviors in 2020 based on real-time representative survey data and used logit regression models to study how individual attitudes and behaviors are shaped by four sets of covariates: individual socio-demographics, health, personality, and regional-level controls. Employing Blinder-Oaxaca regression techniques, we quantified the extent to which differences in averages of the covariates between Japan and Germany explain the differences in the observed preventive attitudes and behaviors.ResultsIn Germany and Japan, similar proportions of the population supported mandatory vaccination, avoided travel, and avoided people with symptoms of a cold. In Germany, however, a significantly higher proportion washed their hands frequently and avoided crowds, physical contact, public transport, peak-hour shopping, and contact with the elderly. In Japan, a significantly higher proportion were willing to be vaccinated. We also show that attitudes and behaviors varied significantly more with covariates in Germany than in Japan. Differences in averages of the covariates contribute little to explaining the observed differences in preventive attitudes and behaviors between the two countries.ConclusionConsistent with tightness-looseness theory, the populations of Japan and Germany responded similarly to the pandemic. The observed differences in infection and fatality rates therefore cannot be explained by differences in behavior. The major difference in attitudes is the willingness to be vaccinated, which was much higher in Japan. Furthermore, the Japanese population behaved more uniformly across social groups than the German population. This difference in the degree of homogeneity has important implications for the effectiveness of policy measures during the pandemic.

Project description:Advertising for unhealthy foods adversely affects children's food preferences and intake. The German government published plans to restrict such advertising in February 2023 and has revised them several times since. We assess the reach of the current draft from June 2023, and discuss its public health implications. We show that across 22 product categories covered by the current draft law, the median share of products permitted for marketing to children stands at 55%, with an interquartile range of 11-73%. Resistance from industry groups and from within government poses hurdles and leaves the prospects of the legislation uncertain.

Project description:Various communication and behavioral theories have been adopted to address health infodemics. However, there is no framework specially designed for social listening studies using social media data, machine learning, and natural language processing techniques. We aimed to propose a novel yet theory-based conceptual framework for infodemic research. We collected theories and models used in COVID-19 related studies published in peer-reviewed journals, ranging from health behavior, communication, to infodemic studies. These were analyzed and critiqued for their components, and we subsequently proposed a conceptual framework with a demonstration. Accordingly, we proposed our "Social Media Listening for Public Health Behavior" conceptual framework by not only integrating important attributes of existing theories, but also adding new attributes. The proposed conceptual framework can be used to better understand public discourse on social media, and can be integrated with other data analyses to gather a more comprehensive picture.

Project description:Understanding the nature of human contact patterns is crucial for predicting the impact of future pandemics and devising effective control measures. However, few studies provide a quantitative description of the aspects of social interactions that are most relevant to disease transmission. Here, we present the results from a detailed diary-based survey of casual (conversational) and close contact (physical) encounters made by a small peer group of 49 adults who recorded 8,661 encounters with 3,528 different individuals over 14 non-consecutive days. We find that the stability of interactions depends on the intimacy of contact and social context. Casual contact encounters mostly occur in the workplace and are predominantly irregular, while close contact encounters mostly occur at home or in social situations and tend to be more stable. Simulated epidemics of casual contact transmission involve a large number of non-repeated encounters, and the social network is well captured by a random mixing model. However, the stability of the social network should be taken into account for close contact infections. Our findings have implications for the modelling of human epidemics and planning pandemic control policies based on social distancing methods.

Project description:This study explores the status quo of preventive care use and social capital among middle-aged and elderly people (≥45 years old) in China, and employs a multi-level model to analyze whether social capital at different levels is associated with preventive care use. The data are derived from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which includes 11,503 respondents and 450 communities. Preventive care use covers the utilization of routine physical examination services. Individual social capital is measured by the level of social network and social activities participation. Social network includes contacting with children or other people, for example, by phone, text message. Social activities participation is measured by the involvement in social activities, for example, playing mahjong, going to community club. Community social capital is evaluated by the richness of community facilities. Results reveals that the utilization of preventive care is 48.94% among middle-aged and elderly in China. The most used preventive service is routine blood test. The intra-class correlation (ICC) coefficient indicates that preventive health behaviors of the respondents are clustered at communities where they live. Multi-level regression shows that influence of social network is not significant to preventive care use (p ＞ 0.05). Community facilities and individual social activities participation are significantly associated with preventive care use (p < 0.05). The association between social capital and preventive care use could be considered as an important factor when making policies to promote preventive care use.

Project description:The outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) posed a powerful threat to human life. The preventive behaviors of individuals (e.g., home quarantine, disinfection, and wearing masks) play a key role in preserving and controlling the disease. In this case, as a motivational psychological system oriented toward avoiding infection, the behavioral immune system (BIS) may be activated and link to preventive behaviors. This study investigated the mechanisms through which emotional and cognitive processes resulted by BIS have promoted preventive behaviors in relation to COVID-19. We collected data on 22,005 active Sina Weibo users from 31 December 2019 to 8 February 2020 to measure their emotions (including disgust, happiness, and fear), cultural values (individualism and collectivism), moral concern (including purity vice, fairness vice, and authority virtue), and behavioral intentions (including isolation intention, protection intention, and aid intention) using Text Mind software and related dictionaries. Multiple regression and mediation analyses were performed to explore the relationships among variables. The results showed seven complete mediation paths (such as disgust-purity vice-protection intention). Each of these paths describes the effects of cognitive processes caused by BIS on preventive behaviors. We inferred that there may be path mechanisms such as disgust-cognitive processes-preventive behaviors. Using these results, policy makers can take appropriate measures to intervene in preventive behaviors (e.g., by posting disgusting images on social media to evoke disgust). The results can be used to explain differences in preventive behaviors among populations even in the face of similar thread levels. Furthermore, our research provides empirical evidence for the hypothesis of pathogen prevalence.
