Q-dependent collective relaxation dynamics of glass-forming liquid Ca_0.4K_0.6(NO₃)_1.4 investigated by wide-angle neutron spin-echo.

ABSTRACT: The relaxation behavior of glass formers exhibits spatial heterogeneity and dramatically changes upon cooling towards the glass transition. However, the underlying mechanisms of the dynamics at different microscopic length scales are not fully understood. Employing the recently developed wide-angle neutron spin-echo spectroscopy technique, we measured the Q-dependent coherent intermediate scattering function of a prototypical ionic glass former Ca_0.4K_0.6(NO₃)_1.4, in the highly viscous liquid state. In contrast to the structure modulated dynamics for Q < 2.4 Å^-1, i.e., at and below the structure factor main peak, for Q > 2.4 Å^-1, beyond the first minimum above the structure factor main peak, the stretching exponent exhibits no temperature dependence and concomitantly the relaxation time shows smaller deviations from Arrhenius behavior. This finding indicates a change in the dominant relaxation mechanisms around a characteristic length of 2π/(2.4 Å^-1) ≈ 2.6 Å, below which the relaxation process exhibits a temperature independent distribution and more Arrhenius-like behavior.

Project description:The further development of solid oxide fuel and electrolysis cells (SOFC/SOEC) strongly relies on research activities dealing with electrode materials. Recent studies showed that under operating conditions many perovskite-type oxide electrodes are prone to changes of their surface composition, leading to severe changes of their electrochemical performance. This results in a large scatter of data in literature and complicates comparison of materials. Moreover, little information is available on the potentially excellent properties of surfaces immediately after preparation, that is, before any degradation by exposure to other gas compositions or temperature changes. Here, we introduce in situ impedance spectroscopy during pulsed laser deposition (IPLD) as a new method for electrochemical analysis of mixed ionic and electronic conducting (MIEC) thin films during growth. First, this approach can truly reveal the properties of as-prepared MIEC electrode materials, since it avoids any alterations of their surface between preparation and investigation. Second, the measurements during growth give information on the thickness dependence of film properties. This technique is applied to La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ (LSC), one of the most promising SOFC/SOEC oxygen electrode material. From the earliest stages of LSC film deposition on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) to a fully grown thin film of 100 nm thickness, data are gained on the oxygen exchange kinetics and the defect chemistry of LSC. A remarkable reproducibility is found in repeated film growth experiments, not only for the bulk related chemical capacitance but also for the surface related polarization resistance (±10%). Polarization resistances of as-prepared LSC films are extraordinarily low (2.0 Ω cm2 in 40 μbar O2 at 600 °C). LSC films on YSZ and on La0.95Sr0.05Ga0.95Mg0.05O3-δ (LSGM) single crystals exhibit significantly different electrochemical properties, possibly associated with the tensile strain of LSC on LSGM.

Project description:The exploration initiated by the discovery of the topological insulator (BixSb1-x)2Te3 has extended to unlock the potential of quantum anomalous Hall effects (QAHEs), marking a revolutionary era for topological quantum devices, low-power electronics, and spintronic applications. In this study, we present the epitaxial growth of Cr-doped (Bi0.4Sb0.6)2Te3 (Cr:BST) thin films via molecular beam epitaxy, incorporating various Cr doping concentrations with varying Cr/Sb ratios (0.025, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1). High-quality crystalline of the Cr:BST thin films deposited on a c-plane sapphire substrate has been rigorously confirmed through reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analyses. The existence of a Cr dopant has been identified with a reduction in the lattice parameter of BST from 30.53 ± 0.05 to 30.06 ± 0.04 Å confirmed by X-ray diffraction, and the valence state of Cr verified by X-ray photoemission (XPS) at binding energies of ~573.1 and ~583.5 eV. Additionally, the influence of Cr doping on lattice vibration was qualitatively examined by Raman spectroscopy, revealing a blue shift in peaks with increased Cr concentration. Surface characteristics, crucial for the functionality of topological insulators, were explored via Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), illustrating a sevenfold reduction in surface roughness as the Cr concentration increased from 0 to 0.1. The ferromagnetic properties of Cr:BST were examined by a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) with a magnetic field applied in out-of-plane and in-plane directions. The Cr:BST samples exhibited a Curie temperature (Tc) above 50 K, accompanied by increased magnetization and coercivity with increasing Cr doping levels. The introduction of the Cr dopant induces a transition from n-type ((Bi0.4Sb0.6)2Te3) to p-type (Cr:(Bi0.4Sb0.6)2Te3) carriers, demonstrating a remarkable suppression of carrier density up to one order of magnitude, concurrently enhancing carrier mobility up to a factor of 5. This pivotal outcome is poised to significantly influence the development of QAHE studies and spintronic applications.
