Project description:Paths and cycles are the two pivotal elements in a network. Here, we demonstrate that paths, particularly the shortest ones, are incomplete in information network. However, based on such paths, many network centrality measures are designed. While extensive explorations on paths have been made, modest studies focus on the cycles on measuring network centrality. We study the relationship between the shortest cycle and the shortest path from extensive real-world networks. The results illustrate the incompleteness of the shortest paths on measuring network centrality. Noticing that the shortest cycle is much more robust than the shortest path, we propose two novel cycle-based network centrality measures to address the incompleteness of paths: the shortest cycle closeness centrality (SCC) and the all cycle betweenness centrality (ACC). Notwithstanding we focus on the network centrality problem, our findings on cycles can be applied to explain the incompleteness of paths in applications and could improve the applicability into more scenarios where the paths are employed in network science.

Project description:BackgroundPrevious research has suggested that manipulation and callousness are central to Dark Triad traits, but it has not identified which specific manifestations are expressed across various countries.ObjectiveThis study aimed to identify the core and overlapping manifestations of Dark Triad traits across 10 countries.MethodsWe used the Short Dark Triad (SD3) scale and assessed a sample of 8093 participants (59.7% women, M(age) = 32.68 years). For graphical representation, the spinglass algorithm was applied to understand the cluster distribution among Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and subclinical narcissism traits. Centrality indices were used to identify the most influential items, and the clique-percolation algorithm was employed to detect shared attributes among multiple Dark Triad items.ResultsStraightforward SD3-21 items demonstrated better interpretability as aversive traits within the broader system. Items with higher centrality values were those related to short-term verbal manipulation from the psychopathy domain, clever manipulation, strategic revenge-seeking from Machiavellianism, and narcissistic motivations for connecting with significant individuals. The most predicted items were linked to planned revenge, using information against others from Machiavellianism, short-term psychopathic verbal manipulation, and narcissistic belief of specialness based on external validation. Items like short-term verbal manipulation had overlaps with both psychopathy and narcissism clusters, while clever manipulation overlapped with Machiavellianism and psychopathy.ConclusionThis cross-cultural study highlights the central role of verbal manipulation within the Dark Triad traits, along with identifying overlapping items among traits measured using straightforward SD3 scale items. In line with our findings, future research that incorporates a wide range of cultural contexts is encouraged to establish the consistency of these findings with the SD3 Scale or alternative measures.

Project description:The extensive development of graph-theoretic analysis for functional connectivity has revealed the multifaceted characteristics of brain networks. Network centralities identify the principal functional regions, individual differences, and hub structure in brain networks. Neuroimaging studies using movie-watching have investigated brain function under naturalistic stimuli. Visual saliency is one of the promising measures for revealing cognition and emotions driven by naturalistic stimuli. This study investigated whether the visual saliency in movies was associated with network centrality. The study examined eigenvector centrality (EC), which is a measure of a region's influence in the brain network, and the participation coefficient (PC), which reflects the hub structure in the brain, was used for comparison. Static and time-varying EC and PC were analyzed by a parcel-based technique. While EC was correlated with brain activity in parcels in the visual and auditory areas during movie-watching, it was only correlated with parcels in the visual areas in the retinotopy task. In addition, high PC was consistently observed in parcels in the putative hub both during the tasks and the resting-state condition. Time-varying EC in the parietal parcels and time-varying PC in the primary sensory parcels significantly correlated with visual saliency in the movies. These results suggest that time-varying centralities in brain networks are distinctively associated with perceptual processing and subsequent higher processing of visual saliency.

Project description:The topology and dynamics of a complex network shape its functionality. However, the topologies of many large-scale networks are either unavailable or incomplete. Without the explicit knowledge of network topology, we show how the data generated from the network dynamics can be utilised to infer the tempo centrality, which is proposed to quantify the influence of nodes in a consensus network. We show that the tempo centrality can be used to construct an accurate estimate of both the propagation rate of influence exerted on consensus networks and the Kirchhoff index of the underlying graph. Moreover, the tempo centrality also encodes the disturbance rejection of nodes in a consensus network. Our findings provide an approach to infer the performance of a consensus network from its temporal data.

Project description:BackgroundOver recent years, some researchers believe that diabetic nephropathy (DN) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) both independently increase the incidence of brain diseases, such as stroke, cerebral infarction, and cerebral hemorrhage. In the present study, we used the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) method to investigate potential changes of functional network brain activity in patients with DN and retinopathy (DNR).MethodsTwenty DNR patients (9 men, 11 women) and 20 healthy controls (HCs; 9 men, 11 women) were recruited; the controls were matched for age, sex, and educational background. All subjects underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Ophthalmoscopy, renal biopsy and single-photon emission computed tomography were used to evaluate microvascular lesions in the eye and kidney. Data were categorized using receiver operating characteristic curves, and correlation analysis was performed using Pearson's correlation analysis.ResultsCompared with HCs, DNR patients showed reduced mean DC values in the right inferior temporal gyrus (RITG) and left subcallosal gyrus regions (LSG) and increased mean DC values in the bilateral precuneus (BP). Moreover, mean DC in the BP was correlated with renal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR; r = 0.762). The area under the curve (AUC) value was 0.829 for BP and 0.839 for RITG and LSG.ConclusionDNR patients showed dysfunction in three different brain regions. The linear correlation between eGFR and mean brain DC values indicates the presence of common diabetic microangiopathy in the brain and kidney, which may provide new ideas for multiorgan microvascular lesions of diabetics.

Project description:While causal mediation analysis has seen considerable recent development for a single measured mediator (M) and final outcome (Y), less attention has been given to repeatedly measured M and Y. Previous methods have typically involved discrete-time models that limit inference to the particular measurement times used and do not recognize the continuous nature of the mediation process over time. To overcome such limitations, we present a new continuous-time approach to causal mediation analysis that uses a differential equations model in a potential outcomes framework to describe the causal relationships among model variables over time. A connection between the differential equation models and standard repeated measures models is made to provide convenient model formulation and fitting. A continuous-time extension of the sequential ignorability assumption allows for identifiable natural direct and indirect effects as functions of time, with estimation based on a two-step approach to model fitting in conjunction with a continuous-time mediation formula. Novel features include a measure of an overall mediation effect based on the "area between the curves," and an approach for predicting the effects of new interventions. Simulation studies show good properties of estimators and the new methodology is applied to data from a cohort study to investigate sugary drink consumption as a mediator of the effect of socioeconomic status on dental caries in children.

Project description:Centrality is a fundamental network property that ranks nodes by their structural importance. However, the network structure alone may not predict successful diffusion in many applications, such as viral marketing and political campaigns. We propose contextual centrality, which integrates structural positions, the diffusion process, and, most importantly, relevant node characteristics. It nicely generalizes and relates to standard centrality measures. We test the effectiveness of contextual centrality in predicting the eventual outcomes in the adoption of microfinance and weather insurance. Our empirical analysis shows that the contextual centrality of first-informed individuals has higher predictive power than that of other standard centrality measures. Further simulations show that when the diffusion occurs locally, contextual centrality can identify nodes whose local neighborhoods contribute positively. When the diffusion occurs globally, contextual centrality signals whether diffusion may generate negative consequences. Contextual centrality captures more complicated dynamics on networks than traditional centrality measures and has significant implications for network-based interventions.

Project description:Universities and higher education institutions form an integral part of the national infrastructure and prestige. As academic research benefits increasingly from international exchange and cooperation, many universities have increased investment in improving and enabling their global connectivity. Yet, the relationship of university performance and its global physical connectedness has not been explored in detail. We conduct, to our knowledge, the first large-scale data-driven analysis into whether there is a correlation between university relative ranking performance and its global connectivity via the air transport network. The results show that local access to global hubs (as measured by air transport network betweenness) strongly and positively correlates with the ranking growth (statistical significance in different models ranges between 5% and 1% level). We also found that the local airport's aggregate flight paths (degree) and capacity (weighted degree) has no effect on university ranking, further showing that global connectivity distance is more important than the capacity of flight connections. We also examined the effect of local city economic development as a confounding variable and no effect was observed suggesting that access to global transportation hubs outweighs economic performance as a determinant of university ranking. The impact of this research is that we have determined the importance of the centrality of global connectivity and, hence, established initial evidence for further exploring potential connections between university ranking and regional investment policies on improving global connectivity.

Project description:Network analysis has been used to elucidate the relationships among depressive symptoms, but this approach has not been typically used in persons with stroke. Using a sample of 835 persons with stroke from Stroke Recovery in Underserved Populations 2005-2006 dataset, this study used network analysis to (1) examine changes in relationships between depressive symptoms over time, and (2) test whether baseline network characteristics were prognostic for depression persistence. Network analysis was performed on depressive symptoms collected at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation and at 3-months and 12-months post-discharge. The depressive symptom network at discharge was less connected than at both post-discharge follow-ups. Trouble focusing and feeling good as others were the most predictable symptoms at post-discharge, even though they were less connected to other depressive symptoms. Among participants with elevated baseline depression severity, those whose depression persisted 12 months later had more strongly connected networks at discharge than those who recovered 12 months later. This study was unable to determine the directionality of edges. The depression scale was administered differently across time points. These results suggest that baseline network connectivity can predict the course of post-stroke depression, similar to non-stroke populations. More broadly, the study highlights the importance of examining relationships between individual depressive symptoms rather than only sum-scores.

Project description:Contemporary modeling approaches to the dynamics of neural networks include two important classes of models: biologically grounded spiking neuron models and functionally inspired rate-based units. We present a unified simulation framework that supports the combination of the two for multi-scale modeling, enables the quantitative validation of mean-field approaches by spiking network simulations, and provides an increase in reliability by usage of the same simulation code and the same network model specifications for both model classes. While most spiking simulations rely on the communication of discrete events, rate models require time-continuous interactions between neurons. Exploiting the conceptual similarity to the inclusion of gap junctions in spiking network simulations, we arrive at a reference implementation of instantaneous and delayed interactions between rate-based models in a spiking network simulator. The separation of rate dynamics from the general connection and communication infrastructure ensures flexibility of the framework. In addition to the standard implementation we present an iterative approach based on waveform-relaxation techniques to reduce communication and increase performance for large-scale simulations of rate-based models with instantaneous interactions. Finally we demonstrate the broad applicability of the framework by considering various examples from the literature, ranging from random networks to neural-field models. The study provides the prerequisite for interactions between rate-based and spiking models in a joint simulation.
