Lav is an autotransporter protein found in pathogenic Haemophilus and <i>Neisseria</i> species. Lav in nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is phase-variable: the gene reversibly switches ON-OFF via changes in length of a locus-located GCAA<sub>(n)</sub> simple DNA sequence repeat tract.
