Detection of plane in remote sensing images using super-resolution.

ABSTRACT: The object detection of remote sensing image often has low accuracy and high missed or false detection rate due to the large number of small objects, instance level noise and cloud occlusion. In this paper, a new object detection model based on SRGAN and YOLOV3 is proposed, which is called SR-YOLO. It solves the problems of SRGAN network sensitivity to hyper-parameters and modal collapse. Meanwhile, The FPN network in YOLOv3 is replaced by PANet, shortened the distance between the lowest and the highest layers, and the SR-YOLO model has strong robustness and high detection ability by using the enhanced path to enrich the characteristics of each layer. The experimental results on the UCAS-High Resolution Aerial Object Detection Dataset showed SR-YOLO has achieved excellent performance. Compared with YOLOv3, the average precision (AP) of SR-YOLO increased from 92.35% to 96.13%, the log-average miss rate (MR-2) decreased from 22% to 14%, and the Recall rate increased from 91.36% to 95.12%.

Reconstruction of super-resolution from high-resolution remote sensing images based on convolutional neural networks.

Project description:In this study, a novel algorithm named the Edge-enhanced Generative Adversarial Network (EGAN) is proposed to address the issues of noise corruption and edge fuzziness in the super-resolution of remote sensing images. To build upon the baseline model called Deep Blind Super-Resolution GAN (DBSR-GAN), an edge enhancement module is introduced to enhance the edge information of the images. To enlarge the receptive field of the algorithm, the Mask branch within the edge enhancement structure is further optimized. Moreover, the loss of image consistency is introduced to guide edge reconstruction, and subpixel convolution is employed for upsampling, thus resulting in sharper edge contours and more consistent stylized results. To tackle the low utilization of global information and the reconstruction of super-resolution artifacts in remote sensing images, an alternative algorithm named Nonlocal Module and Artifact Discrimination EGAN (END-GAN) is proposed. The END-GAN introduces a nonlocal module based on the EGAN in the feature extraction stage of the algorithm, enabling better utilization of the internal correlations of remote sensing images and enhancing the algorithm's capability to extract global target features. Additionally, a method discriminating artifacts is implemented to distinguish between artifacts and reals in reconstructed images. Then, the algorithm is optimized by introducing an artifact loss discrimination alongside the original loss function. Experimental comparisons on two datasets of remote sensing images, NWPUVHR-10 and UCAS-AOD, demonstrate significant improvements in the evaluation indexes when the proposed algorithm is under investigation.

A Decision Mixture Model-Based Method for Inshore Ship Detection Using High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images.

Project description:With the rapid development of optical remote sensing satellites, ship detection and identification based on large-scale remote sensing images has become a significant maritime research topic. Compared with traditional ocean-going vessel detection, inshore ship detection has received increasing attention in harbor dynamic surveillance and maritime management. However, because the harbor environment is complex, gray information and texture features between docked ships and their connected dock regions are indistinguishable, most of the popular detection methods are limited by their calculation efficiency and detection accuracy. In this paper, a novel hierarchical method that combines an efficient candidate scanning strategy and an accurate candidate identification mixture model is presented for inshore ship detection in complex harbor areas. First, in the candidate region extraction phase, an omnidirectional intersected two-dimension scanning (OITDS) strategy is designed to rapidly extract candidate regions from the land-water segmented images. In the candidate region identification phase, a decision mixture model (DMM) is proposed to identify real ships from candidate objects. Specifically, to improve the robustness regarding the diversity of ships, a deformable part model (DPM) was employed to train a key part sub-model and a whole ship sub-model. Furthermore, to improve the identification accuracy, a surrounding correlation context sub-model is built. Finally, to increase the accuracy of candidate region identification, these three sub-models are integrated into the proposed DMM. Experiments were performed on numerous large-scale harbor remote sensing images, and the results showed that the proposed method has high detection accuracy and rapid computational efficiency.

Thermal remote sensing over heterogeneous urban and suburban landscapes using sensor-driven super-resolution.

Project description:Thermal remote sensing is an important tool for monitoring regional climate and environment, including urban heat islands. However, it suffers from a relatively lower spatial resolution compared to optical remote sensing. To improve the spatial resolution, various "data-driven" image processing techniques (pan-sharpening, kernel-driven methods, and machine learning) have been developed in the previous decades. Such empirical super-resolution methods create visually appealing thermal images; however, they may sacrifice radiometric consistency because they are not necessarily sensitive to specific sensor features. In this paper, we evaluated a "sensor-driven" super-resolution approach that explicitly considers the sensor blurring process, to ensure radiometric consistency with the original thermal image during high-resolution thermal image retrieval. The sensor-driven algorithm was applied to a cloud-free Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) scene of heterogeneous urban and suburban landscape that included built-up areas, low mountains with a forest, a lake, croplands, and river channels. Validation against the reference high-resolution thermal image obtained by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) shows that the sensor-driven algorithm can downscale the MODIS image to 250-m resolution, while maintaining a high statistical consistency with the original MODIS and ASTER images. Part of our algorithm, such as radiometric offset correction based on the Mahalanobis distance, may be integrated with other existing approaches in the future.

Remote sensing image Super-resolution reconstruction by fusing multi-scale receptive fields and hybrid transformer.

Project description:To enhance high-frequency perceptual information and texture details in remote sensing images and address the challenges of super-resolution reconstruction algorithms during training, particularly the issue of missing details, this paper proposes an improved remote sensing image super-resolution reconstruction model. The generator network of the model employs multi-scale convolutional kernels to extract image features and utilizes a multi-head self-attention mechanism to dynamically fuse these features, significantly improving the ability to capture both fine details and global information in remote sensing images. Additionally, the model introduces a multi-stage Hybrid Transformer structure, which processes features at different resolutions progressively, from low resolution to high resolution, substantially enhancing reconstruction quality and detail recovery. The discriminator combines multi-scale convolution, global Transformer, and hierarchical feature discriminators, providing a comprehensive and refined evaluation of image quality. Finally, the model incorporates a Charbonnier loss function and total variation (TV) loss function, which significantly improve training stability and accelerate convergence. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method, compared to the SRGAN algorithm, achieves average improvements of approximately 3.61 dB in Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), 0.070 (8.2%) in Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), and 0.030 (3.1%) in Feature Similarity Index (FSIM) across multiple datasets, showing significant performance gains.

A super-resolution network using channel attention retention for pathology images

Project description:Image super-resolution (SR) significantly improves the quality of low-resolution images, and is widely used for image reconstruction in various fields. Although the existing SR methods have achieved distinguished results in objective metrics, most methods focus on real-world images and employ large and complex network structures, which are inefficient for medical diagnosis scenarios. To address the aforementioned issues, the distinction between pathology images and real-world images was investigated, and an SR Network with a wider and deeper attention module called Channel Attention Retention is proposed to obtain SR images with enhanced high-frequency features. This network captures contextual information within and across blocks via residual skips and balances the performance and efficiency by controlling the number of blocks. Meanwhile, a new linear loss was introduced to optimize the network. To evaluate the work and compare multiple SR works, a benchmark dataset bcSR was created, which forces a model training on wider and more critical regions. The results show that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both performance and efficiency, and the newly created dataset significantly improves the reconstruction quality of all compared models. Moreover, image classification experiments demonstrate that the suggested network improves the performance of downstream tasks in medical diagnosis scenarios. The proposed network and dataset provide effective priors for the SR task of pathology images, which significantly improves the diagnosis of relevant medical staff. Application of mask R-CNN for building detection in UAV remote sensing images.

Project description:This study aims to tackle the challenges of low accuracy in building feature extraction and insufficient details in three-dimensional (3D) modeling faced by traditional methods, particularly in complex backgrounds. To address these issues, a method for building feature extraction based on Mask Region-Convolutional Neural Network (Mask R-CNN) is proposed. This approach combines deep learning techniques with aerial images to ensure precise and efficient automatic detection and feature extraction. Urban building images are captured through aerial photography, and building outlines are annotated to create a comprehensive dataset of building features. The Mask R-CNN-based method efficiently processes and classifies the features of the dataset, generating candidate regions for further analysis. Additionally, this method demonstrates significant advantages in building feature extraction by employing the Mask R-CNN model to generate adaptive features. Comparative analysis with models such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN), Fast Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Fast R-CNN), Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN), and Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) indicates that Mask R-CNN exhibits superior performance in building feature extraction. The Mask R-CNN-based approach achieved approximately 95 % classification accuracy, while also showcasing strong stability and generalization capabilities. This study provides new methodologies and insights for enhancing feature extraction in aerial building imagery, offering significant reference value for the fields of architectural design and urban planning.

Object-based multiscale segmentation incorporating texture and edge features of high-resolution remote sensing images

Project description:Multiscale segmentation (MSS) is crucial in object-based image analysis methods (OBIA). How to describe the underlying features of remote sensing images and combine multiple features for object-based multiscale image segmentation is a hotspot in the field of OBIA. Traditional object-based segmentation methods mostly use spectral and shape features of remote sensing images and pay less attention to texture and edge features. We analyze traditional image segmentation methods and object-based MSS methods. Then, on the basis of comparing image texture feature description methods, a method for remote sensing image texture feature description based on time-frequency analysis is proposed. In addition, a method for measuring the texture heterogeneity of image objects is constructed on this basis. Using bottom-up region merging as an MSS strategy, an object-based MSS algorithm for remote sensing images combined with texture feature is proposed. Finally, based on the edge feature of remote sensing images, a description method of remote sensing image edge intensity and an edge fusion cost criterion are proposed. Combined with the heterogeneity criterion, an object-based MSS algorithm combining spectral, shape, texture, and edge features is proposed. Experiment results show that the comprehensive features object-based MSS algorithm proposed in this article can obtain more complete segmentation objects when segmenting ground objects with rich texture information and slender shapes and is not prone to over-segmentation. Compare with the traditional object-based segmentation algorithm, the average accuracy of the algorithm is increased by 4.54%, and the region ratio is close to 1, which will be more conducive to the subsequent processing and analysis of remote sensing images. In addition, the object-based MSS algorithm proposed in this article can effectively obtain more complete ground objects and can be widely used in scenes such as building extraction.

Inferring biological structures from super-resolution single molecule images using generative models.

Project description:Localization-based super resolution imaging is presently limited by sampling requirements for dynamic measurements of biological structures. Generating an image requires serial acquisition of individual molecular positions at sufficient density to define a biological structure, increasing the acquisition time. Efficient analysis of biological structures from sparse localization data could substantially improve the dynamic imaging capabilities of these methods. Using a feature extraction technique called the Hough Transform simple biological structures are identified from both simulated and real localization data. We demonstrate that these generative models can efficiently infer biological structures in the data from far fewer localizations than are required for complete spatial sampling. Analysis at partial data densities revealed efficient recovery of clathrin vesicle size distributions and microtubule orientation angles with as little as 10% of the localization data. This approach significantly increases the temporal resolution for dynamic imaging and provides quantitatively useful biological information.

Information Extraction of High Resolution Remote Sensing Images Based on the Calculation of Optimal Segmentation Parameters.

Project description:Multi-scale image segmentation and the selection of optimal segmentation parameters are the key processes in the object-oriented information extraction of high-resolution remote sensing images. The accuracy of remote sensing special subject information depends on this extraction. On the basis of WorldView-2 high-resolution data, the optimal segmentation parameters methodof object-oriented image segmentation and high-resolution image information extraction, the following processes were conducted in this study. Firstly, the best combination of the bands and weights was determined for the information extraction of high-resolution remote sensing image. An improved weighted mean-variance method was proposed andused to calculatethe optimal segmentation scale. Thereafter, the best shape factor parameter and compact factor parameters were computed with the use of the control variables and the combination of the heterogeneity and homogeneity indexes. Different types of image segmentation parameters were obtained according to the surface features. The high-resolution remote sensing images were multi-scale segmented with the optimal segmentation parameters. Ahierarchical network structure was established by setting the information extraction rules to achieve object-oriented information extraction. This study presents an effective and practical method that can explain expert input judgment by reproducible quantitative measurements. Furthermore the results of this procedure may be incorporated into a classification scheme.

Assessing environmental and radiological impacts and lithological mapping of beryl-bearing rocks in Egypt using high-resolution sentinel-2 remote sensing images.

Project description:Emerald and other beryls represent a family of the most valuable gemstone around the world and particularly in Egypt. Beryllium (Be) contents in beryl-bearing bedrocks in south Sinai (Wadi Ghazala and Wadi Sedri), and in central and south Eastern Desert of Egypt (Igla area, Zabara-Um Addebaa belt, Homret Akarem, and Homret Mukpid) were investigated in this study. The environmental risk levels of Be, associated major ions, and heavy metals in groundwater nearby to beryl-bearing mineralization were also evaluated. Results showed that Be contents ranged from 1 to 374 ppm in beryl-bearing bedrocks, while in nearby groundwater, Be content has a range of 0.0001-0.00044 mg/L with an average of 0.00032 mg/L, which is within the permissible levels and below (0.004) the U.S. EPA maximum contaminant level (MCL). Most levels of heavy metals (e.g., Be, B, Ni, V, Fe, and Al) in the investigated groundwater of central and south Eastern Desert and south Sinai are within the permissible levels and below their corresponding U.S. EPA MCLs. This study also investigated the radiological risk of natural radionuclides distributed in beryl-bearing bedrocks in the study area using gamma spectrometry; Sodium Iodide [NaI(Tl)] scintillation detector. Among the estimated mean 238U, 232Th, and 226Ra activity concentrations of the studied beryl-bearing rocks, Homret Mukpid (79, 87.15, 60.26 Bq kg-1) and Homret Akarem (111.6, 51.17, 85.1 Bq kg-1) contain the highest values. This may be attributed to their highly fractionated granitic rocks that host uranium and thorium reservoir minerals such as zircon, allanite, and monazite. The estimated data of multi-radiological parameters such as absorbed gamma dose, outdoor and indoor annual effective dose, radium equivalent activity, internal and external indices, index of excess cancer, and effective dose to human organs reflecting no significant impacts from the emitted natural gamma radiation.
