Application of Convolutional Neural Network for Fingerprint-Based Prediction of Gender, Finger Position, and Height.

ABSTRACT: Fingerprints are the most common personal identification feature and key evidence for crime scene investigators. The prediction of fingerprints features include gender, height range (tall or short), left or right hand, and finger position can effectively narrow down the list of suspects, increase the speed of comparison, and greatly improve the effectiveness of criminal investigations. In this study, we used three commonly used CNNs (VGG16, Inception-v3, and Resnet50) to perform biometric prediction on 1000 samples, and the results showed that VGG16 achieved the highest accuracy in identifying gender (79.2%), left- and right-hand fingerprints (94.4%), finger position (84.8%), and height range (69.8%, using the ring finger of male participants). In addition, we visualized the CNN classification basis by the Grad-CAM technique and compared the results with those predicted by experts and found that the CNN model outperformed experts in terms of classification accuracy and speed, and provided good reference for fingerprints that were difficult to determine manually.

Project description:Several deep neural networks have been introduced for finger vein recognition over time, and these networks have demonstrated high levels of performance. However, most current state-of-the-art deep learning systems use networks with increasing layers and parameters, resulting in greater computational costs and complexity. This can make them impractical for real-time implementation, particularly on embedded hardware. To address these challenges, this article concentrates on developing a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) named FV-EffResNet for finger vein recognition, aiming to find a balance between network size, speed, and accuracy. The key improvement lies in the utilization of the proposed novel convolution block named the Efficient Residual (EffRes) block, crafted to facilitate efficient feature extraction while minimizing the parameter count. The block decomposes the convolution process, employing pointwise and depthwise convolutions with a specific rectangular dimension realized in two layers (n × 1) and (1 × m) for enhanced handling of finger vein data. The approach achieves computational efficiency through a combination of squeeze units, depthwise convolution, and a pooling strategy. The hidden layers of the network use the Swish activation function, which has been shown to enhance performance compared to conventional functions like ReLU or Leaky ReLU. Furthermore, the article adopts cyclical learning rate techniques to expedite the training process of the proposed network. The effectiveness of the proposed pipeline is demonstrated through comprehensive experiments conducted on four benchmark databases, namely FV-USM, SDUMLA, MMCBNU_600, and NUPT-FV. The experimental results reveal that the EffRes block has a remarkable impact on finger vein recognition. The proposed FV-EffResNet achieves state-of-the-art performance in both identification and verification settings, leveraging the benefits of being lightweight and incurring low computational costs.

Project description:We aimed to differentiate between the interictal and preictal states in epilepsy patients with focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) type-II using deep learning-based classifiers based on intracranial electroencephalography (EEG). We also investigated the practical conditions for high interictal-preictal discriminability in terms of spatiotemporal EEG characteristics and data size efficiency. Intracranial EEG recordings of nine epilepsy patients with FCD type-II (four female, five male; mean age: 10.7 years) were analyzed. Seizure onset and channel ranking were annotated by two epileptologists. We performed three consecutive interictal-preictal classification steps by varying the preictal length, number of electrodes, and sampling frequency with convolutional neural networks (CNN) using 30 s time-frequency data matrices. Classification performances were evaluated based on accuracy, F1 score, precision, and recall with respect to the above-mentioned three parameters. We found that (1) a 5 min preictal length provided the best classification performance, showing a remarkable enhancement of >13% on average compared to that with the 120 min preictal length; (2) four electrodes provided considerably high classification performance with a decrease of only approximately 1% on average compared to that with all channels; and (3) there was minimal performance change when quadrupling the sampling frequency from 128 Hz. Patient-specific performance variations were noticeable with respect to the preictal length, and three patients showed above-average performance enhancements of >28%. However, performance enhancements were low with respect to both the number of electrodes and sampling frequencies, and some patients showed at most 1-2% performance change. CNN-based classifiers from intracranial EEG recordings using a small number of electrodes and efficient sampling frequency are feasible for predicting the interictal-preictal state transition preceding seizures in epilepsy patients with FCD type-II. Preictal lengths affect the predictability in a patient-specific manner; therefore, pre-examinations for optimal preictal length will be helpful in seizure prediction.
