Polymer-BiI₃ composites for high-performance, room-temperature, direct X-ray detectors.

ABSTRACT: Low-energy X-rays have a predominant role in medical diagnostic applications, grown tremendously during recent Covid-19 pandemic times. Synthesis of stable, PMMA/polystyrene-BiI₃ composites has been done through a facile, low-cost, dry-tumble mixing technique for direct X-ray detector applications. Comparative analysis of structural, optical, and photocurrent responses upon irradiation with low-energy X-rays (30 and 60 kV) ensue that PS-BiI₃ demonstrates high SNR 3300, sensitivity 189 µC Gy^-1 cm^-3 and fast response time 30 ms, at dose rate 1.68 mGy s^-1, affirming the composite to be prospective candidate for low-energy, room-temperature, direct X-ray detectors under low bias conditions.

Conductive Polymer Composites for Hydrogen Sulphide Sensors Working at Sub-PPM Level and Room Temperature.

Project description:Hybrid composites based on tin chloride and the conductive polymers, polyaniline (PAni) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), were integrated into high-performance hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas sensors working at room temperature. The morphology and chemical properties were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR). The composites demonstrated a slightly porous nanostructure and strong interactions between the polymers and the metal salt, which slightly dopes PAni. The hybrid sensors exhibited a very low detection limit (<85 ppb), fast response, repeatability, reproducibility and stability over one month. Moreover, this work presents how calibration based on the derivative of the signal can give hybrid sensors the ability to quantify the concentration of targeted gas, even during continuous variation of the analyte concentration. Finally, the effect of interfering species, such as water and ammonia, is discussed.

Performance evaluation of CuBTC composites for room temperature oxygen storage.

Project description:Oxygen is commonly separated from air using cryogenic liquefaction. The inherent energy penalties of phase change inspire the search for energy-efficient separation processes. Here, an alternative approach is presented, where we determine whether it is possible to utilise simpler, stable materials in the right process to achieve overall energy efficiency. Adsorption and release by Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are an attractive alternative due to their high adsorption and storage capacity at ambient conditions. Cu-BTC/MgFe2O4 composites were prepared, and magnetic induction swing adsorption (MISA) used to release adsorbed oxygen quickly and efficiently. The 3 wt% MgFe2O4 composites exhibited an oxygen uptake capacity of 0.34 mmol g-1 at 298 K and when exposed to a magnetic field of 31 mT, attained a temperature rise of 86 °C and released 100% of adsorbed oxygen. This water vapor stable pelletized system, can be filled and emptied within 10 minutes requiring around 5.6 MJ kg-1 of energy.

Solution-grown BiI/BiI3 van der Waals heterostructures for sensitive X-ray detection.

Project description:X-ray detectors must be operated at minimal doses to reduce radiation health risks during X-ray security examination or medical inspection, therefore requiring high sensitivity and low detection limits. Although organolead trihalide perovskites have rapidly emerged as promising candidates for X-ray detection due to their low cost and remarkable performance, these materials threaten the safety of the human body and environment due to the presence of lead. Here we present the realization of highly sensitive X-ray detectors based on an environmentally friendly solution-grown thick BiI/BiI3/BiI (BixIy) van der Waals heterostructure. The devices exhibit anisotropic X-ray detection response with a sensitivity up to 4.3 × 104 μC Gy-1 cm-2 and a detection limit as low as 34 nGy s-1. At the same time, our BixIy detectors demonstrate high environmental and hard radiation stabilities. Our work motivates the search for new van der Waals heterostructure classes to realize high-performance X-ray detectors and other optoelectronic devices without employing toxic elements.

Highly Thermally Conductive Polymer/Graphene Composites with Rapid Room-Temperature Self-Healing Capacity.

Project description:Composites that can rapidly self-healing their structure and function at room temperature have broad application prospects. However, in view of the complexity of composite structure and composition, its self-heal is facing challenges. In this article, supramolecular effect is proposed to repair the multistage structure, mechanical and thermal properties of composite materials. A stiff and tough supramolecular frameworks of 2-[[(butylamino)carbonyl]oxy]ethyl ester (PBA)-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were established using a chain extender with double amide bonds in a side chain to extend prepolymers through copolymerization. Then, by introducing the copolymer into a folded graphene film (FGf), a highly thermally conductive composite of PBA-PDMS/FGf with self-healing capacity was fabricated. The ratio of crosslinking and hydrogen bonding was optimized to ensure that PBA-PDMS could completely self-heal at room temperature in 10 min. Additionally, PBA-PDMS/FGf exhibits a high tensile strength of 2.23 ± 0.15 MPa at break and high thermal conductivity of 13 ± 0.2 W m-1 K-1; of which the self-healing efficiencies were 100% and 98.65% at room temperature for tensile strength and thermal conductivity, respectively. The excellent self-healing performance comes from the efficient supramolecular interaction between polymer molecules, as well as polymer molecule and graphene. This kind of thermal conductive self-healing composite has important application prospects in the heat dissipation field of next generation electronic devices in the future.

Near-Room-Temperature Detection of Aromatic Compounds with Inkjet-Printed Plasticized Polymer Composites.

Project description:Chemiresistive gas sensors composed of a thermoplastic polymer matrix and conductive fillers offer various advantages for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including low power consumption due to near-room-temperature operation, high sensitivity, and inherent selectivity toward VOCs. However, such sensors have a slow response time as the polymer matrix often has a glass transition temperature (Tg) higher than the sensor operating temperature slowing the analyte diffusion to/from the polymer. A plasticizer lowers polymer Tg to match the sensor operation temperature, reducing its response time. In this study, the effect of a plasticizer diethylene glycol dibenzoate (DEGDB) on the sensing properties of polystyrene (PS)-carbon black (CB) composite is investigated to obtain sensors with a fast response time and high sensitivity to VOCs. The sensors are fabricated via drop-on-demand inkjet printing, providing a high degree of control over the sensory film morphology and reproducibility. A design-of-experiment (DoE) approach is adopted to find the optimum ink and print parameters with a minimum number of experiments. As a result, sensors with 30 times faster response time and 25 times higher effective sensitivity are obtained while operating near room temperature (27 °C). Furthermore, the sensors show high sensitivity toward aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, benzene, and ethylbenzene), with a sub-10 ppm limit of detection (LoD) and a negligible sensitivity toward humidity. Our results show the potential of PS-DEGDB-CB composite as a selective and cost-effective sensory material compatible with large-scale manufacturing techniques for selective near-room-temperature detection of toxic VOCs.

Room-Temperature Ferromagnetic Sr3YCo4O10+δ and Carbon Black-Reinforced Polyvinylidenefluoride Composites toward High-Performance Electromagnetic Interference Shielding.

Project description:In this study, we fabricated composites of conducting carbon black (CB), room-temperature ferromagnetic Sr3YCo4O10+δ (SYCO) and polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) by the solution mixing and coagulation method for the first time. During the nucleation process of PVDF, the presence of SYCO and CB individually facilitates the crystallization of polar β and semipolar γ phases along with the nonpolar α phase in PVDF. The dc electrical conductivity of PVDF raised from 1.54 × 10-8 to 9.97 S/m with the addition of 30 wt % of CB, and it is nearly constant with respect to the SYCO content. The PVDF/CB/SYCO composites (PCS) possess high permittivity and its variation is in accordance with the content of polar phases in PVDF. Moreover, the complex permittivity and permeability spectra from 10 MHz to 1 GHz indicate that the dielectric loss dictates over magnetic loss in these composites. The electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of PCS composites is higher than that of PVDF/CB and PVDF/SYCO composites in the 8.2-18 GHz region. Addition of SYCO in the PVDF/CB matrix enhances shielding by dominated absorption with minimal reflection. The analysis of the shielding mechanism suggests that in addition to conducting and magnetic losses due to CB and SYCO, respectively, the synergy among CB, SYCO, and PVDF promotes shielding by matching the input impedance to that of free space, enhancing multiple internal reflections from SYCO and subsequent absorption by CB, eddy current losses, dielectric damping losses, interfacial polarization losses, and so forth. These different mechanisms result in an enhanced EMI SE of 50.2 dB for the PCS-40 composite for a thickness of 2.5 mm.

Room-temperature growth of fluorapatite/CaCO3 heterogeneous structured composites inspired by human tooth.

Project description:Organisms can synthesize heterogeneous structures with excellent mechanical properties through mineralization, the most typical of which are teeth. The tooth is an extraordinarily resilient bi-layered material that is composed of external enamel perpendicular to the tooth surface and internal dentin parallel to the tooth surface. The synthesis of enamel-like heterostructures with good mechanical properties remains an elusive challenge. In this study, we applied a biomimetic mineralization method to grow fluorapatite/CaCO3 (FAP/CaCO3) heterogeneous structured thin films that mimic their biogenic counterparts found in teeth through a three-step pathway: coating a polymer substrate, growing a layered calcite film, and mineralization of a fluorapatite columnar array on the calcite layer. The synthetic heterostructure composites combine well and exhibit good mechanical properties comparable to their biogenic counterparts. The FAP/CaCO3 heterogeneous structured composite exhibits excellent mechanical properties, with a hardness and Young's modulus of 1.99 ± 0.02 GPa and 47.5 ± 0.6 GPa, respectively. This study provides a reasonable new idea for unique heterogeneous structured materials designed at room temperature.

Room Temperature NH3 Selective Gas Sensors Based on Double-Shell Hierarchical SnO2@polyaniline Composites.

Project description:Morphology and structure play a crucial role in influencing the performance of gas sensors. Hollow structures, in particular, not only increase the specific surface area of the material but also enhance the collision frequency of gases within the shell, and have been studied in depth in the field of gas sensing. Taking SnO2 as an illustrative example, a dual-shell structure SnO2 (D-SnO2) was prepared. D-SnO2@Polyaniline (PANI) (DSPx, x represents D-SnO2 molar content) composites were synthesized via the in situ oxidative polymerization method, and simultaneously deposited onto a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate to fabricate an electrode-free, flexible sensor. The impact of the SnO2 content on the sensing performance of the DSPx-based sensor for NH3 detection at room temperature was discussed. The results showed that the response of a 20 mol% D-SnO2@PANI (DSP20) sensor to 100 ppm NH3 at room temperature is 37.92, which is 5.1 times higher than that of a pristine PANI sensor. Moreover, the DSP20 sensor demonstrated a rapid response and recovery rate at the concentration of 10 ppm NH3, with response and recovery times of 182 s and 86 s.

Exploiting fast detectors to enter a new dimension in room-temperature crystallography.

Project description:A departure from a linear or an exponential intensity decay in the diffracting power of protein crystals as a function of absorbed dose is reported. The observation of a lag phase raises the possibility of collecting significantly more data from crystals held at room temperature before an intolerable intensity decay is reached. A simple model accounting for the form of the intensity decay is reintroduced and is applied for the first time to high frame-rate room-temperature data collection.

Ultrasonically Processed WSe2 Nanosheets Blended Bulk Heterojunction Active Layer for High-Performance Polymer Solar Cells and X-ray Detectors.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) tungsten diselenide (WSe2) has attracted considerable attention in the field of photovoltaic devices owing to its excellent structure and photoelectric properties, such as ordered 2D network structure, high electrical conductivity, and high mobility. For this test, we firstly prepared different sizes (NS1-NS3) of WSe2 nanosheets (NSs) through the ultrasonication method and characterized their structures using the field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction. Moreover, we investigated the photovoltaic performance of polymer solar cells based on 5,7-Bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione(PBDB-T):(6,6)-phenyl-C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) with different WSe2 NSs as the active layer. The fabricated PBDB-T:PCBM active layer with the addition of NS2 WSe2 NSs (1.5 wt%) exhibited an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.2%, which is higher than the pure and NS1 and NS3 WSe2 blended active layer-encompassing devices. The improved PCE is attributed to the synergic enhancement of exciton dissociation and an improvement in the charge mobility through the modified active layer for polymer solar cells. Furthermore, the highest sensitivity of 2.97 mA/Gy·cm2 was achieved for the NS2 WSe2 NSs blended active layer detected by X-ray exposure over the pure polymer, and with the NS1 and NS2 WSe2 blended active layer. These results led to the use of transition metal dichalcogenide materials in polymer solar cells and X-ray detectors.
