Tandem imine formation via auto-hydrogen transfer from alcohols to nitro compounds catalyzed by a nanomagnetically recyclable copper catalyst under solvent-free conditions.

ABSTRACT: A direct imination reaction was developed by tandem reaction of alcohols and nitro compounds in the presence of Cu-isatin Schiff base-γ-Fe₂O₃ as a nanomagnetically recyclable catalyst under solvent-free conditions. By this method, various imines were prepared in good to high yields from one-pot reaction of various alcohols (primary aromatic and aliphatic) and nitro compounds (aromatic and aliphatic) via an auto-hydrogen transfer reaction. Use of an inexpensive and easily reusable catalyst, without requiring any additives or excess amounts of benzyl alcohol as the reaction solvent are the other advantages of this method. This catalytic system has the merits of cost effectiveness, environmental benignity, excellent recyclability and good reproducibility.

Among the metal catalysts we examined, the most economical copper(I) catalyst provided the highest efficiency. The indole nucleophiles could also be replaced by other electron-rich arenes or alcohols.

Solvent- and Co-Catalyst-Free Cycloaddition of Carbon Dioxide and Epoxides Catalyzed by Recyclable Bifunctional Niobium Complexes.

Project description:CO2, as a cheap and abundant renewable C1 resource, can be used to synthesize high value-added chemicals. In this paper, a series of bifunctional metallic niobium complexes were synthesized and their structures were characterized by IR, NMR and elemental analysis. All of these complexes have been proved to be efficient catalysts for the coupling reaction of CO2 and epoxides to obtain cyclic carbonates under solvent- and co-catalyst-free conditions. By using CO2 and propylene oxide as a model reaction, the optimal reaction conditions were systematically screened as: 100 °C, 1 MPa, 2 h, ratio of catalyst to alkylene oxide 1:100. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the bifunctional niobium catalysts can efficiently catalyze the coupling reaction with high yield and excellent selectivity (maximum yield of >99% at high pressure and 96.8% at atmospheric pressure). Moreover, this series of catalysts can also catalyze the coupling reaction at atmospheric pressure and most of them showed high conversion of epoxide. The catalysts have good substrate suitability and are also applicable to a variety of epoxides including diepoxides and good catalytic performances were achieved for producing the corresponding cyclic carbonates in most cases. Furthermore, the catalysts can be easily recovered by simple filtration and reused for at least five times without obvious loss of catalytic activity and selectivity. Kinetic studies were carried out preliminarily for the bifunctional niobium complexes with different halogen ions (3a(Cl-), 3b(Br-), 3c(I-)) and the formation activation energies (Ea) of cyclic carbonates were obtained. The order of apparent activation energy Ea is 3a (96.2 kJ/mol) > 3b (68.2 kJ/mol) > 3c (37.4 kJ/mol). Finally, a possible reaction mechanism is proposed.

Tandem oxidative amidation of benzylic alcohols by copper(II) supported on metformin-graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets as an efficient catalyst.

Project description:In this research, an efficient heterogeneous catalyst based on graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (CN) has been reported. The CN was functionalized by 1,3-dibromopropane as a linker (CN-Pr-Br) and subsequently modified with metformin (CN-Pr-Met). Furthermore, the copper(II) was coordinated on modified CN (CN-Pr-Met-Cu(II)) and during this process, 7.94% copper(II) was loaded into the catalyst structure. The synthesized catalyst was evaluated by various techniques including fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). CN-Pr-Met-Cu(II) was used as a catalyst in the synthesis of amides via the oxidation of benzyl alcohols. The conditions of this reaction were optimized in terms of temperature, time, amount of catalyst, type of base, oxidant, and solvent. Moreover, a variety of amides with an efficiency of 75-95% were synthesized. The reaction was carried out in the presence of benzyl alcohols, amine hydrochloride salts, tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), CaCO3, and CN-Pr-Met-Cu(II) at 80 °C of acetonitrile solvent. The synthesized catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction medium and reused for 7 consecutive runs without a significant reduction in reaction efficiency.

Eco-Friendly Homo- and Cross-Etherification of Benzyl Alcohols Catalyzed by Iron(II/III) Chloride in Propylene Carbonate as a Green and Recyclable Solvent.

Project description:A new catalytic approach toward the symmetrical and nonsymmetrical etherification of benzyl alcohols was developed. The symmetrical etherification reaction was carried out in the presence of FeCl3·6H2O (5 mol %) as the catalyst and propylene carbonate as a green and recyclable solvent and led to the corresponding symmetrical ethers in 53 to 91% yields. The nonsymmetrical etherification of benzylic alcohols was achieved by using FeCl2·4H2O (10 mol %) in the presence of a pyridine bis-thiazoline ligand (12 mol %) and allowed for high selectivity and in 52 to 89% yields. These methods take advantage of eco-friendly conditions.

Palladium-Catalyzed Tandem Cycloisomerization/Cross-Coupling of Carbonyl- and Imine-Tethered Alkylidenecyclopropanes.

Project description:Pd0 catalysts featuring phosphorus-based monodentate ligands can detour the reactivity of carbonyl-tethered alkylidenecyclopropanes (ACPs) from standard (3+2) cycloadditions towards tandem cycloisomerization/cross-coupling processes. This new reactivity lies on the formation of key π-allyl oxapalladacyclic intermediates, which are subsequently trapped with external nucleophilic partners, instead of undergoing canonical C-O reductive eliminations. Importantly, the use of imine-tethered ACP's is also feasible. Therefore, the method provides a straightforward and stereoselective entry to a wide variety of highly functionalized cyclic alcohols and amines.

Asymmetric Synthesis of γ-Amino Alcohols by Copper-Catalyzed Hydroamination.

Project description:Asymmetric synthesis of γ-amino alcohols from unprotected allylic alcohols by a copper-catalyzed hydroamination strategy has been developed. Using easily accessible starting materials, a range of chiral 1,3-amino alcohols were prepared with excellent regio- and enantioselectivity. Further, this protocol provided an efficient one-step method for the enantioselective synthesis of γ-amino alcohols in an intermolecular manner.

Copper-Catalyzed α-Alkylation of Aryl Acetonitriles with Benzyl Alcohols.

Project description:A highly efficient, in situ formed CuCl2/TMEDA catalytic system (TMEDA = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylene-diamine) for the cross-coupling reaction of aryl acetonitriles with benzyl alcohols is reported. This user-friendly protocol, employing a low catalyst loading and a catalytic amount of base, leads to the synthesis of α-alkylated nitriles in up to 99% yield. Experimental mechanistic investigations reveal that the key step of this transformation is the C(sp3)-H functionalization of the alcohol, taking place via a hydrogen atom abstraction, with the simultaneous formation of copper-hydride species. Detailed density functional theory studies shed light on all reaction steps, confirming the catalytic pathway proposed on the basis of the experimental findings.

Photocatalytic enantioselective α-aminoalkylation of acyclic imine derivatives by a chiral copper catalyst.

Project description:Copper-based asymmetric photocatalysis has great potential in the development of green synthetic approaches to chiral molecules. However, there are several formidable challenges associated with such a conception. These include the relatively weak visible light absorption, short excited-state lifetimes, incompatibility of different catalytic cycles, and the difficulty of the stereocontrol. We report here an effective strategy by means of single-electron-transfer (SET) initiated formation of radicals and photoactive intermediates to address the long-standing problems. Through elaborate selection of well-matched reaction partners, the chiral bisoxazoline copper catalyst is engaged in the SET process, photoredox catalysis, Lewis acid activation and asymmetric induction. Accordingly, a highly enantioselective photocatalytic α-aminoalkylation of acyclic imine derivatives has been accessed. This strategy sheds light on how to make use of diverse functions of a single transition metal catalyst in one reaction, and offers an economic and simplified approach to construction of highly valuable chiral vicinal diamines.

Chiral imine copper chloride-catalyzed enantioselective desymmetrization of 2-substituted 1,2,3-propanetriols.

Project description:Catalytic enantioselective desymmetrization of meso-2-substituted glycerols has been developed to secure a novel synthetic route to chiral tertiary alcohols. The transformation has been realized by monobenzoylation using benzoyl chloride and triethylamine in the presence of the imine ligand (25)-CuCl2 complex in THF at ambient temperature. The desymmetrization turned out to be greatly dependent on acylating reagent, base, solvent, and needless to say, catalyst. Extensive screening of chiral ligands led us to combine bromopyridinecarboxaldehyde 1 and phenyloxazoline amine 12 derived from tert-leucine, the bromo and phenyl substituents of which proved to be indispensable. All of the substrates have been desymmetrized to the corresponding monobenzoates with high enantioselectivity up to 96% enantiomeric excess. The catalytic system allows broad structural diversity of substrates and its synthetic versatility has been demonstrated by an efficient synthetic route to a known key precursor 68 of triazole antifungals.

Auto-Tandem Catalytic Reductive Hydroformylation in a CO2-Switchable Solvent System.

Project description:Upgradation of olefin-enriched Fischer-Tropsch cuts by the synthesis of alcohols leads to drop-in-capable biosynthetic fuels with low carbon emissions. As an alternative to the conventional two-step production of long-chain alcohols, tandem catalytic systems improve the energy and resource efficiency. Herein, we present an auto-tandem catalytic system for the production of alcohols from olefin-paraffin mixtures. By utilization of a tertiary alkanolamine as the ligand as well as the switchable component in the solvent system, a lean reaction system capable of catalyst recycling was developed. The system was characterized with regard to the switchable solvent separation approach and reaction parameters, resulting in alcohol yields of up to 99.5% and turnover frequencies of up to 764 h-1. By recycling the catalyst in 10 consecutive reactions, a total turnover number of 2810 was achieved.
