PCN-222@g-C₃N₄ cathodic materials for "signal-off" photoelectrochemical sensing of kanamycin sulfate.

ABSTRACT: A novel cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of kanamycin sulfate (KAM) based on the g-C₃N₄ coupled zirconium-based porphyrinic metal-organic framework (PCN-222). Photocathodes made by double n-type semiconductors, which was attributed to the transfer of electrons and holes from g-C₃N₄ broad band to PCN-222 with narrow band gap. The photocurrent decreased when KAM was added, which was conducive to the construction of the PEC sensor. Then, the PCN-222@g-C₃N₄ was used as a photosensitive platform to construct a label-free strategy and ultrasensitive detection of KAM with wide linear range from 1 to 1000 nM and a low detection limit of 0.127 nM. Moreover, this sensing platform shows good selectivity, favourable reproducibility and brilliant stability. The reported sensors provided great potential for the detection of KAM in actual samples.

Gold and Platinum Nanoparticle-Functionalized TiO2 Nanotubes for Photoelectrochemical Glucose Sensing.

Project description:Developing stable photoelectrochemistry (PEC) glucose biosensors with high sensitivity and a low detection limit is highly desirable in the biosensor field. Herein, a highly sensitive and stable enzymatic glucose PEC biosensor is rationally designed and fabricated using a TiO2NTs/Au/Pt/GOx electrode. First, we prepared one-dimensional TiO2 nanotube arrays which could realize the orthogonalization of the light-incident direction and the carrier diffusion direction via anodization. Subsequently, we used the method of photoassisted deposition for anchoring Pt nanoparticles on TiO2NTs after electrodepositing Au nanoparticles. Among them, Au nanoparticles promote light absorption via the surface plasmon resonance effect and the separation of photogenerated carriers through forming a Schottky junction. Moreover, the Pt nanoparticles on the electrode surface can react with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generated from glucose (Glu) oxidation by glucose oxidase (GOx), accelerating the electron-transfer process during glucose oxidation and greatly improving the sensitivity of the glucose biosensor. As a result, TiO2NTs/Au/Pt/GOx exhibited excellent PEC performance, achieving a high sensitivity of 81.93 μA mM-1 cm-2 and a low detection limit (1.39 μM), far exceeding the performance of TiO2NTs/M/GOx (M = Au, Pt). Therefore, the introduction of Pt nanoparticles as active substances to promote enzymatic reactions is important for designing high-performance enzyme biosensors.

Smartphone-based kanamycin sensing with ratiometric FRET.

Project description:Smartphone-based fluorescence detection is a promising avenue for biosensing that can aid on-site analysis. However, quantitative detection with fluorescence in the field has been limited due to challenges with robust excitation and calibration requirements. Here, we show that ratiometric analysis with Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between dye pairs on DNA aptamers can enable rapid and sensitive kanamycin detection. Since our detection scheme relies on ligand binding-induced changes in the aptamer tertiary structure, it is limited only by the kinetics of ligand binding to the aptamer. Our FRET-based kanamycin binding aptamer (KBA) sensor displays two linear ranges of 0.05-5 nM (detection limit of 0.18 nM) and 50-900 nM of kanamycin. The aptamer displays high specificity even in the presence of the 'natural' background from milk. By immobilizing the aptamer in the flow cell, our KBA sensor design is also suitable for repeated kanamycin detection. Finally, we show that the ratiometric FRET-based analysis can be implemented on a cheap custom-built smartphone setup. This smartphone-based FRET aptamer scheme detects kanamycin in a linear range of 50-500 nM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 28 nM.

EMIMBF4-Assisted SnO2-Based Planar Perovskite Films for Label-Free Photoelectrochemical Sensing.

Project description:In this work, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing system was developed for chemical detection without any tags. The system is based on methylammonium lead iodide chloride perovskite as the photoelectrochemical signal-generating molecule, tin oxide nanoparticles (SnO2) as the electron transport layer, and ionic liquid of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIMBF4) as the stabilizer and electrolyte. The photosensitizer film is formed through spin-coating followed by low-temperature sintering. Upon irradiation with 473 nm light, an anodic photocurrent is generated in a blank electrolyte and changed significantly after addition of hemin into the electrolyte. The change of photocurrent after addition of hemin suggested that the chemicals participated in a photoelectrochemical process. Our work paves the way to developing analytical methods with perovskite.

Bi-Functional Paraffin@Polyaniline/TiO2/PCN-222(Fe) Microcapsules for Solar Thermal Energy Storage and CO2 Photoreduction.

Project description:A novel type of bi-functional microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) microcapsules with thermal energy storage (TES) and carbon dioxide (CO2) photoreduction was designed and fabricated. The polyaniline (PANI)/titanium dioxide (TiO2)/PCN-222(Fe) hybrid shell encloses phase change material (PCM) paraffin by the facile and environment-friendly Pickering emulsion polymerization, in which TiO2 and PCN-222(Fe) nanoparticles (NPs) were used as Pickering stabilizer. Furthermore, a ternary heterojunction of PANI/(TiO2)/PCN-222(Fe) was constructed due to the tight contact of the three components on the hybrid shell. The results indicate that the maximum enthalpy of MEPCMs is 174.7 J·g-1 with encapsulation efficiency of 77.2%, and the thermal properties, chemical composition, and morphological structure were well maintained after 500 high-low temperature cycles test. Besides, the MEPCM was employed to reduce CO2 into carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4) under natural light irradiation. The CO evolution rate reached up to 45.16 μmol g-1 h-1 because of the suitable band gap and efficient charge migration efficiency, which is 5.4, 11, and 62 times higher than pure PCN-222(Fe), PANI, and TiO2, respectively. Moreover, the CO evolution rate decayed inapparently after five CO2 photoreduction cycles. The as-prepared bi-functional MEPCM as the temperature regulating building materials and air purification medium will stimulate a potential application.

The design and growth of peanut-like CuS/BiVO4 composites for photoelectrochemical sensing.

Project description:In this study, the CuS/BiVO4-X (where X represents the mass percentage of CuS associated with CuS/BiVO4; X = 2%, 5% and 7%) p-n heterostructures were fabricated using a two-step hydrothermal method. The structural and morphological features were ascertained in great detail using several physical characterization processes. According to the results of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) experimental processes, the PEC properties of CuS/BiVO4-5% were much more obvious as compared to those of pure BiVO4, CuS and CuS/BiVO4-X. Moreover, the photoluminescence (PL) and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectra (DRS) affirmed that the CuS/BiVO4-5% demonstrates an excellent capacity for absorbing visible light and low electron recombination rate as compared with the other composites. Accordingly, PEC sensors with CuS/BiVO4-5% were fabricated for the detection of dopamine (DA) and bisphenol A (BPA) with outstanding selectivity and stability. For DA, it implied a broad linear range from 0.01-10 μM and 10-120 μM, and for BPA, the broad linear range was 0.01-90 μM. Thus, the PEC sensor has significant potential application when it comes to DA and BPA detection.

Recent Progress in Photoelectrochemical Sensing of Pesticides in Food and Environmental Samples: Photoactive Materials and Signaling Mechanisms.

Project description:Pesticides have become an integral part of modern agricultural practices, but their widespread use poses a significant threat to human health. As such, there is a pressing need to develop effective methods for detecting pesticides in food and environmental samples. Traditional chromatography methods and common rapid detection methods cannot satisfy accuracy, portability, long storage time, and solution stability at the same time. In recent years, photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing technology has gained attention as a promising approach for detecting various pesticides due to its salient advantages, including high sensitivity, low cost, simple operation, fast response, and easy miniaturization, thus becoming a competitive candidate for real-time and on-site monitoring of pesticide levels. This review provides an overview of the recent advancements in PEC methods for pesticide detection and their applications in ensuring food and environmental safety, with a focus on the categories of photoactive materials, from single semiconductor to semiconductor-semiconductor heterojunction, and signaling mechanisms of PEC sensing platforms, including oxidation of pesticides, steric hindrance, generation/decrease in sacrificial agents, and introduction/release of photoactive materials. Additionally, this review will offer insights into future prospects and confrontations, thereby contributing novel perspectives to this evolving domain.

Feasibility Study of Photoelectrochemical Sensing of Glucose and Urea Using BiVO4 and BiVO4/BiOCl Photoanodes.

Project description:This study investigates the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of molybdenum-doped bismuth vanadate (Mo-doped BiVO4) and its heterojunction with the BiOCl layer in glucose and urea sensing. Photoelectrochemical analyses, including cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), revealed that the formation of a heterojunction enhanced charge carrier separation. The impact of the interaction between the surface of the photoanode and analytes on sensing performance was systematically evaluated. Among the tested configurations, Mo-doped BiVO4 exhibited superior glucose sensing with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.173 µM, while BiVO4/BiOCl demonstrated an LOD of 2.474 µM. In the context of urea sensing, Mo-doped BiVO4 demonstrated an LOD of 0.656 µM, while BiVO4/BiOCl exhibited an LOD of 0.918 µM. Notably, despite the enhanced PEC activity observed in heterostructured samples, Mo-doped BiVO4 exhibited superior sensing performance, attributable to good interaction with analytes. The photocurrent response trends-an increase with glucose concentration and a decrease with urea concentration-were attributed to oxidation and adsorption phenomena on the photoanode surface. These findings underscore the critical role of photoanode surface engineering in advancing PEC sensor technology, paving the way for more efficient environmental and biomedical applications.

Nanoplatelet cryoaerogels with potential application in photoelectrochemical sensing.

Project description:Semiconductor nanoparticle based porous 3D assemblies are interesting materials for various applications in the fields of photovoltaics, catalysis, or optical sensing. For use as photoelectrodes in photoelectrochemical sensors they need to be characterised by a high porosity, a good photostability, and a high charge carrier mobility. Our work reports on the preparation of cryoaerogel photoelectrodes based on CdSe nanoplatelets and their photoelectrochemical characterisation by means of linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS). The obtained open-pored cryoaerogel films were observed to produce much higher photocurrents than comparable drop-cast films. By means of IMPS, the performance differences could be linked to the occurrence of charge carrier movement, which could solely be proven for the cryoaerogels. In a proof-of-principle experiment, the potential of the prepared photoelectrodes for application in photoelectrochemical sensing was moreover demonstrated.

Diadenosine tetraphosphate modulated quorum sensing in bacteria treated with kanamycin.

Project description:BackgroundThe dinucleotide alarmone diadenosine tetraphosphate (Ap4A), which is found in cells, has been shown to affect the survival of bacteria under stress.ResultsHere, we labeled Ap4A with biotin and incubated the labeled Ap4A with the total proteins extracted from kanamycin-treated Escherichia coli to identify the Ap4A binding protein in bacteria treated with kanamycin. Liquid chromatography‒mass spectrometry (LCMS) and bioinformatics were used to identify novel proteins that Ap4A interacts with that are involved in biofilm formation, quorum sensing, and lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis pathways. Then, we used the apaH knockout strain of E. coli K12-MG1655, which had increased intracellular Ap4A, to demonstrate that Ap4A affected the expression of genes in these three pathways. We also found that the swarming motility of the apaH mutant strain was reduced compared with that of the wild-type strain, and under kanamycin treatment, the biofilm formation of the mutant strain decreased.ConclusionsThese results showed that Ap4A can reduce the survival rate of bacteria treated with kanamycin by regulating quorum sensing (QS). These effects can expand the application of kanamycin combinations in the treatment of multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Upconversion-Powered Photoelectrochemical Bioanalysis for DNA Sensing.

Project description:In this work, we report a new concept of upconversion-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis. The proof-of-concept involves a PEC bionanosystem comprising a NaYF4:Yb,Tm@NaYF4 upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) reporter, which is confined by DNA hybridization on a CdS quantum dots (QDs)/indium tin oxide (ITO) photoelectrode. The CdS QD-modified ITO electrode was powered by upconversion absorption together with energy transfer effect through UCNPs for a stable photocurrent generation. By measuring the photocurrent change, the target DNA could be detected in a specific and sensitive way with a wide linear range from 10 pM to 1 μM and a low detection limit of 0.1 pM. This work exploited the use of UCNPs as signal reporters and realized upconversion-powered PEC bioanalysis. Given the diversity of UCNPs, we believe it will offer a new perspective for the development of advanced upconversion-powered PEC bioanalysis.
