Synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from methanol and CO₂ under low pressure.

ABSTRACT: A mild and highly efficient approach has been developed for the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and CO₂ under low initial pressure. The key to a successful transformation is the use of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), CH₂Br₂ and ionic liquid. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the yield of DMC was obtained up to 81% under 0.25 MPa. The direct synthesis of DMC can be carried out at balloon pressure using CH₂Br₂ and DBU. In this case, after the reaction, DBU was proved to be recyclable after having been treated with KOH in ethanol. In addition, a plausible mechanism for this synthetic reaction was proposed according to the experimental results.

Synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from CO2 and methanol over a hydrophobic Ce/SBA-15 catalyst.

Project description:A series of Ce/SBA-15 catalysts with different degrees of hydrophobicities were prepared via a post-grafting method and used for the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol. The Ce/SBA-15-6 catalyst exhibited the highest DMC yield of 0.2%, which was close to the equilibrium value under the reaction conditions of 130 °C, 12 h and 12 MPa. The catalysts were characterized via XRD, BET, FT-IR, solid-state 29Si MAS NMR, CA, TEM, XPS and NH3/CO2-TPD; the results indicated that the hydrophobicity of the catalysts facilitated the creation of oxygen vacancies, which could act as Lewis acids to activate methanol. Higher amounts of moderate acid sites led to higher yields of DMC. In addition, the hydrophobicity of the catalysts could also reduce the adsorbed water on their surface and increase the DMC yield while shortening the reaction time.

One-Pot Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate over a Binary Catalyst of an Ionic Liquid and an Alkali Carbonate under Low Pressure.

Project description:A mild and highly efficient approach has been developed for the one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from epoxide, carbon dioxide, and methanol under low initial pressure. The key to the successful transformation is the use of a bicomponent catalytic system composed of a hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid and an alkali carbonate. This bicomponent catalytic system demonstrated excellent reusability in four runs. Under the optimal reaction conditions, a 64% yield of DMC from propylene oxide and an 81% yield of DMC from ethylene oxide were obtained.

Dialkyl Carbonate Synthesis Using Atmospheric Pressure of CO2.

Project description:Dialkyl carbonates (DRCs) are valuable compounds widely used in the industry. The synthesis of DRC from CO2 has attracted interest as an alternative to the current method, which uses phosgene. However, the reported approaches for DRC synthesis from CO2 requires high-pressure and high-concentration CO2, resulting in elevated costs associated with CO2 purification and manufacturing facilities. In this report, we present an environmentally friendly method for producing DRC from low-concentration and low-pressure CO2 via a dehydration condensation approach without the use of halogenated alkylating agents. This method involves the formation of monoalkyl carbonate [BASE-H][ROC(O)O] using a strong organic base and alcohols, tetraalkyl orthosilicates as dehydrating agents, and CeO2 as the catalyst. Using the method, 39 and 30% of diethyl carbonate yields were accomplished with only 100 and 15 vol % CO2 (CO2/N2 = 15:85) gas bubbling at atmospheric pressure, even under reaction conditions with no large excess of either CO2, alcohol, or dehydration agent.

Dimethyl carbonate synthesis from CO2 and methanol over CeO2: elucidating the surface intermediates and oxygen vacancy-assisted reaction mechanism.

Project description:Surface intermediate species and oxygen vacancy-assisted mechanism over CeO2 catalyst in the direct dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis from carbon dioxide and methanol are suggested by means of transient spectroscopic methodologies in conjunction with multivariate spectral analysis. How the two reactants, i.e. CO2 and methanol, interact with the CeO2 surface and how they form decisive surface intermediates leading to DMC are unraveled by DFT-based molecular dynamics simulation by precise statistical sampling of various configurations of surface states and intermediates. The atomistic simulations and uncovered stability of different intermediate states perfectly explain the unique DMC formation profile experimentally observed upon transient operations, strongly supporting the proposed oxygen vacancy-assisted reaction mechanism.

Co-Production of Dimethyl Carbonate, Dimethoxymethane and Dimethyl Ether from Methanol: Process Design and Exergy Analysis

Project description:Dimethyl carbonate is an important green chemical that has been widely used in the chemical industry. In the production of dimethyl carbonate, methanol oxidative carbonylation has been studied, but the conversion ratio of dimethyl carbonate using this method is too low, and the subsequent separation requires a large amount of energy due to methanol and dimethyl carbonate being azeotrope. In this paper, the strategy of “reaction instead of separation” is proposed. Based on this strategy, a novel process is developed to combine the production of DMC with that of dimethoxymethane (DMM) and dimethyl ether (DME). The co-production process was simulated using Aspen Plus software, and the product purity was up to 99.9%. The exergy analysis of the co-production process and the existing process was carried out. The exergy destruction and exergy efficiency were compared with those of the existing production processes. The results show that the exergy destruction of the co-production process is about 276% less than that of the single-production processes, and the exergy efficiencies in the developed co-production process are significantly improved. The utility loads of the co-production process are significantly lower than that of the single-production process. The developed co-production process increases the methanol conversion ratio to 95%, with a reduced energy requirement. It is proved that the developed co-production process can provide an advantageous option over the existing processes with improved energy efficiency and material savings. The strategy of “reaction instead of separation” is feasible. A new strategy is proposed for azeotrope separation.

Elucidating the Role of Surface Ce4+ and Oxygen Vacancies of CeO2 in the Direct Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate from CO2 and Methanol.

Project description:Cerium dioxide (CeO2) was pretreated with reduction and reoxidation under different conditions in order to elucidate the role of surface Ce4+ and oxygen vacancies in the catalytic activity for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol. The corresponding catalysts were comprehensively characterized using N2 physisorption, XRD, TEM, XPS, TPD, and CO2-FTIR. The results indicated that reduction treatment promotes the conversion of Ce4+ to Ce3+ and improves the concentration of surface oxygen vacancies, while reoxidation treatment facilitates the conversion of Ce3+ to Ce4+ and decreases the concentration of surface oxygen vacancies. The catalytic activity was linear with the number of moderate acidic/basic sites. The surface Ce4+ rather than oxygen vacancies, as Lewis acid sites, promoted the adsorption of CO2 and the formation of active bidentate carbonates. The number of moderate basic sites and the catalytic activity were positively correlated with the surface concentration of Ce4+ but negatively correlated with the surface concentration of oxygen vacancies. The surface Ce4+ and lattice oxygen were active Lewis acid and base sites respectively for CeO2 catalyst, while surface oxygen vacancy and lattice oxygen were active Lewis acid and base sites, respectively, for metal-doped CeO2 catalysts. This may result from the different natures of oxygen vacancies in CeO2 and metal-doped CeO2 catalysts.

Low-nuclearity CuZn ensembles on ZnZrOx catalyze methanol synthesis from CO2.

Project description:Metal promotion could unlock high performance in zinc-zirconium catalysts, ZnZrOx, for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Still, with most efforts devoted to costly palladium, the optimal metal choice and necessary atomic-level architecture remain unclear. Herein, we investigate the promotion of ZnZrOx catalysts with small amounts (0.5 mol%) of diverse hydrogenation metals (Re, Co, Au, Ni, Rh, Ag, Ir, Ru, Pt, Pd, and Cu) prepared via a standardized flame spray pyrolysis approach. Cu emerges as the most effective promoter, doubling methanol productivity. Operando X-ray absorption, infrared, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopic analyses and density functional theory simulations reveal that Cu0 species form Zn-rich low-nuclearity CuZn clusters on the ZrO2 surface during reaction, which correlates with the generation of oxygen vacancies in their vicinity. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that this catalytic ensemble promotes the rapid hydrogenation of intermediate formate into methanol while effectively suppressing CO production, showcasing the potential of low-nuclearity metal ensembles in CO2-based methanol synthesis.

Ordered versus Non-Ordered Mesoporous CeO2-Based Systems for the Direct Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate from CO2.

Project description:In this work, non-ordered and ordered CeO2-based catalysts are proposed for CO2 conversion to dimethyl carbonate (DMC). Particularly, non-ordered mesoporous CeO2, consisting of small nanoparticles of about 8 nm, is compared with two highly porous (635-722 m2/g) ordered CeO2@SBA-15 nanocomposites obtained by two different impregnation strategies (a two-solvent impregnation method (TS) and a self-combustion (SC) method), with a final CeO2 loading of 10 wt%. Rietveld analyses on XRD data combined with TEM imaging evidence the influence of the impregnation strategy on the dispersion of the active phase as follows: nanoparticles of 8 nm for the TS composite vs. 3 nm for the SC composite. The catalytic results show comparable activities for the mesoporous ceria and the CeO2@SBA-15_SC nanocomposite, while a lower DMC yield is found for the CeO2@SBA-15_TS nanocomposite. This finding can presumably be ascribed to a partial obstruction of the pores by the CeO2 nanoparticles in the case of the TS composite, leading to a reduced accessibility of the active phase. On the other hand, in the case of the SC composite, where the CeO2 particle size is much lower than the pore size, there is an improved accessibility of the active phase to the molecules of the reactants.

Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate by Transesterification of Propylene Carbonate with Methanol on CeO2-La2O3 Oxides Prepared by the Soft Template Method.

Project description:In this study, CeO2, La2O3, and CeO2-La2O3 mixed oxide catalysts with different Ce/La molar ratios were prepared by the soft template method and characterized by different techniques, including inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. NH3 and CO2 adsorption microcalorimetry was also used for assessing the acid and base surface properties, respectively. The behavior of the oxides as catalysts for the dimethyl carbonate synthesis by the transesterification of propylene carbonate with methanol, at 160 °C under autogenic pressure, was studied in a stainless-steel batch reactor. The activity of the catalysts was found to increase with an increase in the basic sites density. The formation of dimethyl carbonate was favored on medium-strength and weak basic sites, while it underwent decomposition on the strong ones. Several parasitic reactions occurred during the transformation of propylene carbonate, depending on the basic and acidic features of the catalysts. A reaction pathway has been proposed on the basis of the components identified in the reaction mixture.

Spectro-Electrochemical Examination of the Formation of Dimethyl Carbonate from CO and Methanol at Different Electrode Materials.

Project description:In this work, we report a fundamental mechanistic study of the electrochemical oxidative carbonylation of methanol with CO for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate on metallic electrodes at low overpotentials. For the first time, the reaction was shown to take place on the metallic catalysts without need of oxidized metals or additives. Moreover, in-situ spectroelectrochemical techniques were applied to this electrosynthesis reaction in order to reveal the reaction intermediates and to shed light into the reaction mechanism. Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy was used with different electrode materials (Au, Pd, Pt, and Ag) to assess the effect of the electrode material on the reaction and the dependence of products and intermediates on the applied potentials. It was observed that the dimethyl carbonate is only formed when the electrode is able to decompose/oxidize MeOH to form (adsorbed) methoxy groups that can further react with CO to dimethyl carbonate. Furthermore, the electrode needs to adsorb CO not too strongly; otherwise, further reaction will be inhibited because of surface poisoning by CO.
