Loss of life estimation and risk level classification due to a dam break.

ABSTRACT: This report estimated the loss of life and the variation of risk level to people and properties from the city of São José do Jacuípe, at Bahia State, in Brazil, through a simulation of the dam break near the city. The simulations employ the HEC-RAS program with the HEC-GeoRAS plugin, both made available by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The program is a hydrological model for the hydric flow propagation arising from the complete resolution of the Saint-Venant equation, while the plugin was used for vector editing by creating a geomorphological model from the river basin. The results from the research demonstrated that the city is exposed to a risk that is time dependent. In addition, the lack of a warning system about a possible break could cause the death of almost all residents. Otherwise, with a warning system operating, the estimation of destruction would be dramatically reduced.

Project description:Exposure to PM2.5 is associated with hundreds of premature mortalities every year in New York City (NYC). Current air quality and health impact assessment tools provide county-wide estimates but are inadequate for assessing health benefits at neighborhood scales, especially for evaluating policy options related to energy efficiency or climate goals. We developed a new ZIP Code-Level Air Pollution Policy Assessment (ZAPPA) tool for NYC by integrating two reduced form models─Community Air Quality Tools (C-TOOLS) and the Co-Benefits Risk Assessment Health Impacts Screening and Mapping Tool (COBRA)─that propagate emissions changes to estimate air pollution exposures and health benefits. ZAPPA leverages custom higher resolution inputs for emissions, health incidences, and population. It, then, enables rapid policy evaluation with localized ZIP code tabulation area (ZCTA)-level analysis of potential health and monetary benefits stemming from air quality management decisions. We evaluated the modeled 2016 PM2.5 values against observed values at EPA and NYCCAS monitors, finding good model performance (FAC2, 1; NMSE, 0.05). We, then, applied ZAPPA to assess PM2.5 reduction-related health benefits from five illustrative policy scenarios in NYC focused on (1) commercial cooking, (2) residential and commercial building fuel regulations, (3) fleet electrification, (4) congestion pricing in Manhattan, and (5) these four combined as a "citywide sustainable policy implementation" scenario. The citywide scenario estimates an average reduction in PM2.5 of 0.9 μg/m3. This change translates to avoiding 210-475 deaths, 340 asthma emergency department visits, and monetized health benefits worth $2B to $5B annually, with significant variation across NYC's 192 ZCTAs. ZCTA-level assessments can help prioritize interventions in neighborhoods that would see the most health benefits from air pollution reduction. ZAPPA can provide quantitative insights on health and monetary benefits for future sustainability policy development in NYC.

Project description:Brain age can be estimated using different Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) modalities including diffusion MRI. Recent studies demonstrated that white matter (WM) tracts that share the same function might experience similar alterations. Therefore, in this work, we sought to investigate such issue focusing on five WM bundles holding that feature that is Association, Brainstem, Commissural, Limbic and Projection fibers, respectively. For each tract group, we estimated brain age for 15,335 healthy participants from United Kingdom Biobank relying on diffusion MRI data derived endophenotypes, Bayesian ridge regression modeling and 10 fold-cross validation. Furthermore, we estimated brain age for an Ensemble model that gathers all the considered WM bundles. Association analysis was subsequently performed between the estimated brain age delta as resulting from the six models, that is for each tract group as well as for the Ensemble model, and 38 daily life style measures, 14 cardiac risk factors and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging features and genetic variants. The Ensemble model that used all tracts from all fiber groups (FG) performed better than other models to estimate brain age. Limbic tracts based model reached the highest accuracy with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 5.08, followed by the Commissural ([Formula: see text]), Association ([Formula: see text]), and Projection ([Formula: see text]) ones. The Brainstem tracts based model was the less accurate achieving a MAE of 5.86. Accordingly, our study suggests that the Limbic tracts experience less brain aging or allows for more accurate estimates compared to other tract groups. Moreover, the results suggest that Limbic tract leads to the largest number of significant associations with daily lifestyle factors than the other tract groups. Lastly, two SNPs were significantly (p value [Formula: see text]) associated with brain age delta in the Projection fibers. Those SNPs are mapped to HIST1H1A and SLC17A3 genes.

Project description:BackgroundIn genomic prediction including data of 3- or 4-way crossbred animals, line composition is usually fitted as a regression on expected line proportions, which are 0.5, 0.25 and 0.25, respectively, for 3-way crossbred animals. However, actual line proportions for the dam lines can vary between ~ 0.1 and 0.4, and ignoring this variation may affect the genomic estimated breeding values of purebred selection candidates. Our aim was to validate a proposed gold standard to evaluate different approaches for estimating line proportions using simulated data, and to subsequently use this in actual 3-way crossbred broiler data to evaluate several other methods.ResultsAnalysis of simulated data confirmed that line proportions computed from assigned breed-origin-of-alleles (BOA) provide a very accurate gold standard, even if the parental lines are closely related. Alternative investigated methods were linear regression of genotypes on line-specific allele frequencies, maximum likelihood estimation using the program ADMIXTURE, and the genomic relationship of crossbred animals with their maternal grandparents. The results from the simulated data showed that the genomic relationship with the maternal grandparent was most accurate, and least affected by closer relationships between the dam lines. Linear regression and ADMIXTURE performed similarly for unrelated lines, but their accuracy dropped considerably when the dam lines were more closely related. In almost all cases, estimates improved after adjusting them to ensure that the sum of dam line contributions within animals was equal to 0.5, and within dam line and across animals the average was equal to 0.25. Results from the broiler data were much more similar between methods. In both cases, stringent linkage disequilibrium pruning of genotype data led to a relatively low accuracy of predicted line proportions, due to the loss of too many single nucleotide polymorphisms.ConclusionsWith relatively unrelated parental lines as typical in crosses in pigs and poultry, linear regression of crossbred genotypes on line-specific allele frequencies and ADMIXTURE are very competitive methods. Thus, linear regression may be the method of choice, as it does not require genotypes of grandparents, is computationally very efficient, and easily implemented and adapted for considering the specific nature of the crossbred animals analysed.

Project description:BackgroundLeptospirosis, a prevalent zoonotic disease with One Health priority and a disease of poverty, lacks global economic burden estimates. This study aims to determine the global, regional, and country-level cost of leptospirosis due to loss of productivity.Methodology/principal findingsThe cost of leptospirosis due to loss of productivity (referred to as productivity cost hereafter) was estimated by converting the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost due to leptospirosis to a monetary value using the per capita gross domestic product (GDP). The country-specific DALYs lost were obtained from the global burden of leptospirosis study published previously. Non-health GDP per capita (GDP- per capita health expenditure) was used for the cost conversion of DALYs. Country-specific GDP and health expenditure data were obtained from the World Bank data repositories. Estimates were done using both nominal and international dollars. The estimated global productivity cost of leptospirosis in 2019 was Int$ 29.3 billion, with low and high estimates ranging from Int$ 11.6 billion to 52.3 billion. China (Int$ 4.8 billion), India (Int$ 4.6 billion), Indonesia (Int$ 2.8 billion), Sri Lanka (Int$ 2.1 billion), and the United States (Int$ 1.3 billion) had the highest productivity cost due to leptospirosis. Eight out of 10 countries with the highest burden were in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, lower-middle-income countries had an annual productivity cost of Int$ 13.8 billion, indicating that the disease is poverty-related.ConclusionAlthough significant, the cost estimate due to loss of productivity is merely a fraction of the overall economic burden of this disease, which also includes other direct, indirect, and intangible costs. The existing partial estimates of the different components of economic cost suggest a profound economic burden that demands the inclusion of leptospirosis in the global health agenda for comprehensive disease control and prevention efforts, including vaccine development.
