Synthesis of fluorinated phosphorus-containing copolymers and their immobilization and properties on stainless steel.

ABSTRACT: A series of fluorinated-phosphonic acid methacrylates were synthesized by free radical polymerization using heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate (HDFDMA) and (dimethoxyphosphoryl) methyl methacrylate (DMPMM) monomers for potential application as anti-corrosion coatings. The dimethyl protecting groups were then hydrolyzed, giving phosphonic acid groups that are able to stably bind onto metal oxide surfaces. The copolymers were then immobilized as a monolayer film to the surface of 316L stainless steel by treatment of dilute solutions in trifluoroacetic acid for 30 minutes followed by rinsing. The surfaces were analyzed using various techniques and contact angles as high as 128° were recorded for some copolymer functionalized surfaces. Results also demonstrated that the polymer films proved stable to hydrolysis over several weeks of immersion in water.

Synthesis and Characterization of Phosphorus- and Carborane-Containing Polyoxanorbornene Block Copolymers.

Project description:Grubbs-catalyzed ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of carborane- and phosphonate-containing monomers has been used for the generation of hybrid block copolymers. Molecular weights with Mn of 50,000 g/mol were readily obtained with polydispersity index values, Đ, between 1.03⁻1.08. Reaction of the phospha ester and carborane substituted oxanorbornene block copolymer with trimethylsilyl bromide led to a new polymer with phosphonic acid functionalities. In application studies, the phospha-carborane functionalized block polymer was tested as heat resistance material. Thermal stability was investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) analysis. Thermal treatment and ceramic yield under air were directly correlated to the carborane content of the block copolymer. However, phosphorus content in the polymer was more crucial for the char residues when heated under nitrogen atmosphere. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) increased as the number of phosphonate functionalities increased. However, corresponding phosphonic acid derivatives featured a lower heat release rate and total heat release. Moreover, the phosphonic acid functionalities of the block copolymer offer efficient chelating capabilities for iron nanoparticles, which is of interest for applications in biomedicine in the future. The complexation with iron oxide nanoparticles was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP⁻MS).

Effects of Austenitizing Temperature on Tensile and Impact Properties of a Martensitic Stainless Steel Containing Metastable Retained Austenite.

Project description:Austenitizing temperature is one decisive factor for the mechanical properties of medium carbon martensitic stainless steels (MCMSSs). In the present work, the effects of austenitizing temperature (1000, 1020, 1040 and 1060 °C) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of MCMSSs containing metastable retained austenite (RA) were investigated by means of electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as tensile and impact toughness tests. Results suggest that the microstructure including an area fraction of undissolved M23C6, carbon and chromium content in matrix, prior austenite grain size (PAGS), fraction and composition of RA in studied MCMSSs varies with employed austenitizing temperature. By optimizing austenitizing temperature (1060 °C for 40 min) and tempering (250 °C for 30 min) heat treatments, the MCMSS demonstrates excellent mechanical properties with the ultimate tensile strength of 1740 ± 8 MPa, a yield strength of 1237 ± 19 MPa, total elongation (ductility) of 10.3 ± 0.7% and impact toughness of 94.6 ± 8.0 Jcm-2 at room temperature. The increased ductility of alloys is mainly attributed to the RA with a suitable stability via a transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect, and a matrix containing reduced carbon and chromium content. However, the impact toughness of MCMSSs largely depends on M23C6 carbides.

Ferrocene-Based Terpolyamides and Their PDMS-Containing Block Copolymers: Synthesis and Physical Properties.

Project description:Aromatic polyamides are well-known as high-performance materials due to their outstanding properties making them useful in a wide range of applications. However, their limited solubility in common organic solvents restricts their processability and becomes a hurdle in their applicability. This study is focused on the synthesis of processable ferrocene-based terpolyamides and their polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-containing block copolymers, using low-temperature solution polycondensation methodology. All the synthesized materials were structurally characterized using FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopic techniques. The ferrocene-based terpolymers and block copolymers were soluble in common organic solvents, while the organic analogs were found only soluble in sulfuric acid. WXRD analysis showed the amorphous nature of the materials, while the SEM analysis exposed the modified surface of the ferrocene-based block copolymers. The structure-property relationship of the materials was further elucidated by their water absorption and thermal behavior. These materials showed low to no water absorption along with their high limiting oxygen index (LOI) values depicting their good flame-retardant behavior. DFT studies also supported the role of various monomers in the polycondensation reaction where the electron pair donation from HOMO of diamine monomer to the LUMO of acyl chloride was predicted, along with the calculation of various other parameters of the representative terpolymers and block copolymers.

Gold Nanoparticles Synthesis Using Stainless Steel as Solid Reductant: A Critical Overview.

Project description:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were produced using stainless steel as a solid reductant to assist the synthesis of metal NPs, using HAuCl4 as a precursor. This method is very easy, quick, and cost-effective, allowing the synthesis of highly stable NPs without additional capping agents. However, the reaction mechanism is still under debate. In order to contribute to the investigation of the synthesis of AuNPs using stainless steel, different experimental conditions were tested. Cl- concentration, pH of the precursor solution, as well as stainless steel composition were systematically changed. The syntheses were performed recording the open circuit potential to potentiometrically explore the electrochemical properties of the system, under operando conditions. Spectroscopic and morphological characterizations were carried out along with potentiometric monitoring, aiming at correlating the synthesis parameters with the AuNPs characteristics. As a result, an overview of the process features, and of its most reasonable mechanism were obtained.

Fabrication of stainless-steel microfibers with amorphous-nanosized microstructure with enhanced mechanical properties.

Project description:Metallic glasses (MG) have attracted much attention due to their superior hardness and good corrosion resistance. However, designing new MG compositions is still a big challenge, and their integration into different systems is limited when they are in the shape of bulk materials. Here, we present a new method for the fabrication of MG in the form of microfibers which could greatly help them to be integrated within different systems. The newly proposed technique has the ability to form MG structure from commercially available alloy compositions thanks to its significantly improved quenching rate(~ 108 K.s-1). In this technique, individual melt droplets are ejected on a rotating wheel forming a thin film which are ruptured upon solidification leading to the formation of MG microfibers. In this regard, we have fabricated microfibers from a commercial DIN 1.4401 stainless-steel which could form a completely amorphous structure confirmed by DSC, XRD, and HRTEM. The fabricated MG microfibers show an increased hardness for more than two-fold from 3.5 ± 0.17 GPa for the as-received stainless-steel to 7.77 ± 0.60 GPa for the amorphous microfibers. Subsequent heat-treatment of the microfibers resulted in a nanocrystalline structure with the presence of amorphous regions when the hardness increases even further to 13.5 ± 2.0 GPa. We propose that confinement of both shear transformation zones and dislocations in the heat-treated MG microfibers plays a major role in enhancing strength.

Electrodepositing Ag on Anodized Stainless Steel for Enhanced Antibacterial Properties and Corrosion Resistance.

Project description:Antibacterial stainless steels have been widely used in biomedicine, food, and water treatment. However, the current antibacterial stainless steels face challenges in balancing corrosion resistance and antibacterial effectiveness, limiting their application range and lifespan. In this study, an oxide layer sealed with antibacterial Ag particles was constructed on the surface of 304 stainless steel through anodizing and electrodeposition, and the process parameters were optimized for achieving long-term antibacterial properties. The electrochemical tests demonstrated that the composite coating effectively enhanced the corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed the close binding mechanism between the Ag particles and the micropores in the oxide layer. Furthermore, the antibacterial stainless steel has an antibacterial rate of 99% against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and good biocompatibility. This study provides an effective approach for designing efficient, stable, and safe antibacterial stainless steel.

Water-soluble and adjustable fluorescence copolymers containing a hydrochromic dye: synthesis, characterization and properties.

Project description:Water solubility and adjustable fluorescence properties have been successfully implemented in the hydrochromic amino rhodamine via copolymerization. Four copolymers have been synthesized and clearly characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, proving greater detail than the commonly used NMR and IR technologies. The four copolymers have good solubility in pure water and in many common organic solvents, while preserving the hydrochromism of the dye monomer. Based on aggregation and dispersion of the copolymers as adjusted by solvent media and temperature, reversible fluorescence properties were successfully realized. Furthermore, their luminescence in solid state was observed. These studies are of great significance for expanding the application of hydrochromic dyes in biological fields and promoting green industrialization.

Fluorinated DNA Micelles: Synthesis and Properties.

Project description:Creating new functional building blocks that expand the versatility of nanostructures depends on bottom-up self-assembly of amphiphilic biomolecules. Inspired by the unique physicochemical properties of hydrophobic perfluorocarbons, coupled with the powerful functions of nucleic acids, we herein report the synthesis of a series of diperfluorodecyl-DNA conjugates (PF-DNA) which can efficiently self-assemble into micelles in aqueous solution. On the basis of the micelle structure, both target binding affinity and enzymatic resistance of the DNA probe can be enhanced. In addition, based on the hydrophobic effect, the PF-DNA micelles (PFDM) can actively anchor onto the cell membrane, offering a promising tool for cell-surface engineering. Finally, the PFDM can enter cells, which is significant for designing carriers for intracellular delivery. The combined advantages of the DNA micelle structure and the unique physicochemical properties of perfluorocarbons make these PFDM promising for applications in bioimaging and biomedicine.

Synthesis and Optoelectronic Properties of Block and Random Copolymers Containing Pendant Carbazole and (Di)phenylanthracene.

Project description:Synthesis of novel block and random copolymers, containing a carbazole unit and (di)phenylanthracene moiety in the side chains, has been described in this paper. Block and random copolymers composed of 4-bromophenyl vinyl sulfide (BPVS) and N-vinylcarbazole (NVC) were initially prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Then, anthracene-based groups were introduced on the bromophenyl unit in the carbazole-containing copolymers by Pd-catalyzed coupling to yield functional copolymers with additional (di)phenylanthracene units. The resulting copolymers, having two distinct electronic functionalities, exhibited characteristic fluorescence resonance energy transfer, as confirmed by UV-vis and fluorescence spectra.
