Sulphated alumina tungstic acid (SATA): a highly efficient and novel heterogeneous mesostructured catalyst for the synthesis of pyrazole carbonitrile derivatives and evaluation of green metrics.

ABSTRACT: A novel mesostructured catalyst sulphated alumina tungstic acid (SATA) has been prepared by an easy route. Various techniques such as IR, XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM, TGA and BET were used to characterize the synthesized catalyst. The catalytic activity of the meso material has been explored by synthesizing a series of new pyrazole carbonitrile derivatives from aromatic aldehydes, ethylcyanoacetate, phenylhydrazine/hydrazine hydrate in ethanol under reflux conditions. Furthermore, the "greenness" of this protocol when estimated by green metrics, displayed satisfactory results. The protocol is free from column chromatography, and toxic solvents and is more efficient as compared to reported ones.

Project description:In the title compound, C(10)H(9)N(5), the phenyl ring is twisted with respect to the pyrazole ring, forming a dihedral angle of 24.00 (6)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds into chains running parallel to [010] containing alternating R(2) (2)(6) and R(2) (2)(12) rings. Further inter-actions are found in the crystal, viz. N-H⋯π(phen-yl) inter-actions and weak face-to-face π-π stacking inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance = 3.8890 (6) Å] between the centroids of the pyrazole and phenyl rings are observed.

Project description:The title compound, C(18)H(13)N(3)O, has a butterfly-like structure, in which the pyrazole ring forms dihedral angles of 59.31 (8) and 57.24 (8)° with the two phenyl rings. The dihedral angle between the two phenyl rings is 64.03 (8)°. The pyrazole ring and the C-C=O plane of the acetyl group are twisted slightly, making a dihedral angle of 7.95 (18)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked through weak C-H⋯N and C-H⋯O inter-actions into a helical chain along the a-axis direction.

Glass surface as strong base, 'green' heterogeneous catalyst and degradation reagent.

Project description:Systematic screening of accelerated chemical reactions at solid/solution interfaces has been carried out in high-throughput fashion using desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and it provides evidence that glass surfaces accelerate various base-catalyzed chemical reactions. The reaction types include elimination, solvolysis, condensation and oxidation, whether or not the substrates are pre-charged. In a detailed mechanistic study, we provide evidence using nanoESI showing that glass surfaces can act as strong bases and convert protic solvents into their conjugate bases which then act as bases/nucleophiles when participating in chemical reactions. In aprotic solvents such as acetonitrile, glass surfaces act as 'green' heterogeneous catalysts that can be recovered and reused after simple rinsing. Besides their use in organic reaction catalysis, glass surfaces are also found to act as degradation reagents for phospholipids with increasing extents of degradation occurring at low concentrations. This finding suggests that the storage of base/nucleophile-labile compounds or lipids in glass containers should be avoided.

Green energy by recoverable triple-oxide mesostructured perovskite photovoltaics.

Project description:Perovskite solar cells have developed into a promising branch of renewable energy. A combination of feasible manufacturing and renewable modules can offer an attractive advancement to this field. Herein, a screen-printed three-layered all-nanoparticle network was developed as a rigid framework for a perovskite active layer. This matrix enables perovskite to percolate and form a complementary photoactive network. Two porous conductive oxide layers, separated by a porous insulator, serve as a chemically stable substrate for the cells. Cells prepared using this scaffold structure demonstrated a power conversion efficiency of 11.08% with a high open-circuit voltage of 0.988 V. Being fully oxidized, the scaffold demonstrated a striking thermal and chemical stability, allowing for the removal of the perovskite while keeping the substrate intact. The application of a new perovskite in lieu of a degraded one exhibited a full regeneration of all photovoltaic performances. Exclusive recycling of the photoactive materials from solar cells paves a path for more sustainable green energy production in the future.

Project description:Tannic acid-linked silica-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@SiO2@Tannic acid) were prepared and characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Fe3O4@SiO2@Tannic acid supplies an environmentally friendly procedure for the synthesis of some novel 5-amino-pyrazole-4-carbonitriles through the three-component mechanochemical reactions of synthetized azo-linked aldehydes, malononitrile, and phenylhydrazine or p-tolylhydrazine. These compounds were produced in high yields and at short reaction times. The catalyst could be easily recovered and reused for six cycles with almost consistent activity. The structures of the synthesized 5-amino-pyrazole-4-carbonitrile compounds were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and FTIR spectra, and elemental analyses.

Project description:In the title pyrazole derivative, C(19)H(15)N(3)O, the central pyrazole ring makes dihedral angles of 42.71 (9) and 61.34 (9)°, respectively, with the phenyl and p-tolyl rings. The dihedral angle between the phenyl and p-tolyl rings is 58.22 (9)°. The 3-acetyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbonitrile unit is essentially planar, with an r.m.s. deviation of 0.0295 (1) Å for the ten non-H atoms.

A green edge-hosted zinc single-site heterogeneous catalyst for superior Fenton-like activity.

Project description:Developing green heterogeneous catalysts with excellent Fenton-like activity is critical for water remediation technologies. However, current catalysts often rely on toxic transitional metals, and their catalytic performance is far from satisfactory as alternatives of homogeneous Fenton-like catalysts. In this study, a green catalyst based on Zn single-atom was prepared in an ammonium atmosphere using ZIF-8 as a precursor. Multiple characterization analyses provided evidence that abundant intrinsic defects due to the edge sites were created, leading to the formation of a thermally stable edge-hosted Zn-N4 single-atom catalyst (ZnN4-Edge). Density functional theory calculations revealed that the edge sites equipped the single-atom Zn with a super catalytic performance, which not only promoted decomposition of peroxide molecule (HSO5-) but also greatly lowered the activation barrier for •OH generation. Consequently, the as-prepared ZnN4-Edge exhibited extremely high Fenton-like performance in oxidation and mineralization of phenol as a representative organic contaminant in a wide range of pH, realizing its quick detoxification. The atom-utilization efficiency of the ZnN4-Edge was ~104 higher than an equivalent amount of the control sample without edge sites (ZnN4), and the turnover frequency was ~103 times of the typical benchmark of homogeneous catalyst (Co2+). This study opens up a revolutionary way to rationally design and optimize heterogeneous catalysts to homogeneous catalytic performance for Fenton-like application.

Homogeneous Catalysis and Heterogeneous Recycling: A Simple Zn(II) Catalyst for Green Fatty Acid Esterification.

Project description:This work describes the use of simple zinc(II) salts (ZnCl2, ZnCO3, Zn(OAc)2, ZnO, Zn(ClO4)2, Zn(TfO)2, and Zn(BF4)2) as effective catalysts for the esterification of fatty acids with long-chain alcohols and simple polyols through a homogeneous system that allows the gradual and selective removal of water. The results show that the catalytic activity depends on the nature of the counterion: the most effective are the salts with poorly coordinating anions (perchlorate and triflate) or containing basic Brønsted anions (oxide, acetate, and carbonate). However, only with the latter is it possible to fully recover the catalyst at the end of each run, which is easily filtered in the form of zinc carboxylate, given its insolubility in the ester produced. In this way, it is possible to recycle the catalyst numerous times, without any loss of activity. This beneficial prerogative couples the efficiency of the homogeneous catalysis with the advantage of the heterogeneous catalysis. The process is, therefore, truly sustainable, given its high efficiency, low energy consumption, ease of purification, and the absence of auxiliary substances and byproducts.
