A composite with a gradient distribution of graphene and its anisotropic electromagnetic reflection.

ABSTRACT: So far, it is still difficult to construct composites with a gradient distribution of graphene for decreasing the reflection and increasing the absorption of electromagnetic energy. Here, we introduce an electrochemical method to efficiently prepare a graphene/polyurethane composite with a gradient graphene distribution. And the composite shows obvious anisotropic reflection of electromagnetic waves, with low reflection loss (<-30 dB) and high absorption (>99.5%) in the whole X-band when electromagnetic waves are incident to the surface that has low graphene content. More importantly, the electrochemical method could be extended to the preparation of functional materials with similar structures based on the electrophoresis of charged nanoparticles.

Absorption-Reflection-Transmission Power Coefficient Guiding Gradient Distribution of Magnetic MXene in Layered Composites for Electromagnetic Wave Absorption.

Project description:The morphological distribution of absorbent in composites is equally important with absorbents for the overall electromagnetic properties, but it is often ignored. Herein, a comprehensive consideration including electromagnetic component regulation, layered arrangement structure, and gradient concentration distribution was used to optimize impedance matching and enhance electromagnetic loss. On the microscale, the incorporation of magnetic Ni nanoparticles into MXene nanosheets (Ni@MXene) endows suitable intrinsic permittivity and permeability. On the macroscale, the layered arrangement of Ni@MXene increases the effective interaction area with electromagnetic waves, inducing multiple reflection/scattering effects. On this basis, according to the analysis of absorption, reflection, and transmission (A-R-T) power coefficients of layered composites, the gradient concentration distribution was constructed to realize the impedance matching at low-concentration surface layer, electromagnetic loss at middle concentration interlayer and microwave reflection at high-concentration bottom layer. Consequently, the layered gradient composite (LG5-10-15) achieves complete absorption coverage of X-band at thickness of 2.00-2.20 mm with RLmin of -68.67 dB at 9.85 GHz in 2.05 mm, which is 199.0%, 12.6%, and 50.6% higher than non-layered, layered and layered descending gradient composites, respectively. Therefore, this work confirms the importance of layered gradient structure in improving absorption performance and broadens the design of high-performance microwave absorption materials.

Investigation of Electromagnetic Pulse Compaction on Conducting Graphene/PEKK Composite Powder.

Project description:Polymer-composite materials have the characteristics of light weight, high load, corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and high oil resistance. In particular, graphene composite has better electrical conductivity and mechanical performance. However, the raw materials of graphene composite are processed into semi-finished products, directly affecting their performance and service life. The electromagnetic pulse compaction was initially studied to get the product Graphene/PEKK composite powder. Simultaneously, spark plasma sintering was used to get the bars to determine the electrical conductivity of Graphene/PEKK composite. On the basis of this result, conducting Graphene/PEKK composite powder can be processed by electromagnetic pulse compaction. Finite element numerical analysis was used to obtain process parameters during the electromagnetic pulse compaction. The results show that discharge voltage and discharge capacitance influence on the magnetic force, which is a main moulding factor affecting stress, strain and density distribution on the specimen during electromagnetic pulse compaction in a few microseconds.

Electromagnetic Shielding by MXene-Graphene-PVDF Composite with Hydrophobic, Lightweight and Flexible Graphene Coated Fabric.

Project description:MXene and graphene based thin, flexible and low-density composite were prepared by cost effective spray coating and solvent casting method. The fabricated composite was characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The prepared composites showed hydrophobic nature with higher contact angle of 126°, -43 mN·m-1 wetting energy, -116 mN·m-1 spreading Coefficient and 30 mN·m-1 lowest work of adhesion. The composites displayed excellent conductivity of 13.68 S·cm-1 with 3.1 Ω·sq-1 lowest sheet resistance. All the composites showed an outstanding thermal stability and constrain highest weight lost until 400 °C. The MXene-graphene foam exhibited excellent EMI shielding of 53.8 dB (99.999%) with reflection of 13.10 dB and absorption of 43.38 dB in 8⁻12.4 GHz. The single coated carbon fabric displayed outstanding absolute shielding effectiveness of 35,369.82 dB·cm²·g-1. The above results lead perspective applications such as aeronautics, radars, air travels, mobile phones, handy electronics and military applications.

3D Printed Integrated Gradient-Conductive MXene/CNT/Polyimide Aerogel Frames for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding with Ultra-Low Reflection.

Project description:Construction of advanced electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with miniaturized, programmable structure and low reflection are promising but challenging. Herein, an integrated transition-metal carbides/carbon nanotube/polyimide (gradient-conductive MXene/CNT/PI, GCMCP) aerogel frame with hierarchical porous structure and gradient-conductivity has been constructed to achieve EMI shielding with ultra-low reflection. The gradient-conductive structures are obtained by continuous 3D printing of MXene/CNT/poly (amic acid) inks with different CNT contents, where the slightly conductive top layer serves as EM absorption layer and the highly conductive bottom layer as reflection layer. In addition, the hierarchical porous structure could extend the EM dissipation path and dissipate EM by multiple reflections. Consequently, the GCMCP aerogel frames exhibit an excellent average EMI shielding efficiency (68.2 dB) and low reflection (R = 0.23). Furthermore, the GCMCP aerogel frames with miniaturized and programmable structures can be used as EMI shielding gaskets and effectively block wireless power transmission, which shows a prosperous application prospect in defense industry and aerospace.

Enhanced response and sensitivity of self-corrugated graphene sensors with anisotropic charge distribution.

Project description:We introduce a high-performance molecular sensor using self-corrugated chemically modified graphene as a three dimensional (3D) structure that indicates anisotropic charge distribution. This is capable of room-temperature operation, and, in particular, exhibiting high sensitivity and reversible fast response with equilibrium region. The morphology consists of periodic, "cratered" arrays that can be formed by condensation and evaporation of graphene oxide (GO) solution on interdigitated electrodes. Subsequent hydrazine reduction, the corrugated edge area of the graphene layers have a high electric potential compared with flat graphene films. This local accumulation of electrons interacts with a large number of gas molecules. The sensitivity of 3D-graphene sensors significantly increases in the atmosphere of NO2 gas. The intriguing structures have several advantages for straightforward fabrication on patterned substrates, high-performance graphene sensors without post-annealing process.

Electromagnetic Confinement via Spin-Orbit Interaction in Anisotropic Dielectrics.

Project description:We investigate electromagnetic propagation in uniaxial dielectrics with a transversely varying orientation of the optic axis, the latter staying orthogonal everywhere in the propagation direction. In such a geometry, the field experiences no refractive index gradients, yet it acquires a transversely modulated Pancharatnam-Berry phase, that is, a geometric phase originating from a spin-orbit interaction. We show that the periodic evolution of the geometric phase versus propagation gives rise to a longitudinally invariant effective potential. In certain configurations, this geometric phase can provide transverse confinement and waveguiding. The theoretical findings are tested and validated against numerical simulations of the complete Maxwell's equations. Our results introduce and illustrate the role of geometric phases on electromagnetic propagation over distances well exceeding the diffraction length, paving the way to a whole new family of guided waves and waveguides that do not rely on refractive index tailoring.

Antimatched Electromagnetic Metasurfaces for Broadband Arbitrary Phase Manipulation in Reflection.

Project description:Metasurfaces impart phase discontinuities on impinging electromagnetic waves that are typically limited to 0-2π. Here, we demonstrate that multiresonant metasurfaces can break free from this limitation and supply arbitrarily large, tunable time delays over ultrawide bandwidths. As such, ultrathin metasurfaces can act as the equivalent of thick bulk structures by emulating the multiple geometric resonances of three-dimensional systems that originate from phase accumulation with effective material resonances implemented on the surface itself via suitable subwavelength meta-atoms. We describe a constructive procedure for defining the required sheet admittivities of such metasurfaces. Importantly, the proposed approach provides an exactly linear phase response so that broadband pulses can experience the desired group delay without any distortion of the pulse shape. We focus on operation in reflection by exploiting an antimatching condition, satisfied by interleaved electric and magnetic Lorentzian resonances in the surface admittivities, which completely zeroes out transmission through the metasurface. As a result, the proposed metasurfaces can perfectly reflect a broadband pulse imparting a prescribed group delay. The group delay can be tuned by modifying the implemented resonances, thus opening up diverse possibilities in the temporal applications of metasurfaces.

Flexible PEBAX/graphene electromagnetic shielding composite films with a negative pressure effect of resistance for pressure sensors applications.

Project description:In the current work, we fabricated flexible poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBAX)/graphene composite films by a combination of facile melt blending and compression molding technique. The graphene content significantly affects the mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance. An electrically conductive percolation threshold of 1.75 vol% graphene was obtained in the PEBAX/graphene composites. With the introduction of 4.45 vol%, and 8.91 vol% graphene content, the average EMI SE of composite films could reach 16.6 and 30.7 dB, respectively. More interestingly, the PEBAX/graphene composite exhibited a nearly-linear negative pressure coefficient (NPC) effect of resistance with increasing outer pressure stimulation, which was attributed to the formation of more conductive pathways caused by the decreased distance between adjacent graphene. In addition, these composites demonstrated good sensing stability, recoverability and reproducibility after stabilization by cyclic pressure loading. The current study provides guidelines for the large-scale preparation of elastomer NPC sensors and smart EMI shielding devices.

Negative reflection and negative surface wave conversion from obliquely incident electromagnetic waves.

Project description:Complete control of spatially propagating waves (PWs) and surface waves (SWs) is an ultimate goal that scientists and engineers seek for, in which negative reflection of PW and negative surface wave are two exotic phenomena. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an anisotropic digital coding metasurface capable of controlling both PWs and SWs with a single coding pattern. On the basis of the digital description of coding metasurfaces, a simple coding method is proposed to allow dual functionalities (either PW or SW manipulations) under two orthogonal polarizations at arbitrarily oblique incidences, thus improving the adaptability of digital coding metasurfaces in more practical circumstances. With elaborately designed ellipse-shaped coding particles, we experimentally demonstrate various functions under oblique incidences, including the negative reflection of PW, negative SW, anomalous reflection and their arbitrary combinations, all having good agreements with theoretical and numerical predictions. We believe that the proposed method may enable the digital coding metasurfaces to have broad applications in radar detections, wireless communications and imaging.

Anisotropic charge distribution and anisotropic van der Waals radius leading to intriguing anisotropic noncovalent interactions.

Project description:Although group (IV-VII) nonmetallic elements do not favor interacting with anionic species, there are counterexamples including the halogen bond. Such binding is known to be related to the charge deficiency because of the adjacent atom's electron withdrawing effect, which creates σ/π-holes at the bond-ends. However, a completely opposite behavior is exhibited by N2 and O2, which have electrostatically positive/negative character around cylindrical-bond-surface/bond-ends. Inspired by this, here we elucidate the unusual features and origin of the anisotropic noncovalent interactions in the ground and excited states of the 2(nd) and 3(rd) row elements belonging to groups IV-VII. The anisotropy in charge distributions and van der Waals radii of atoms in such molecular systems are scrutinized. This provides an understanding of their unusual molecular configuration, binding and recognition modes involved in new types of molecular assembling and engineering. This work would lead to the design of intriguing molecular systems exploiting anisotropic noncovalent interactions.
