The effect of bubble nucleation on the performance of a wickless heat pipe in microgravity.

ABSTRACT: Bubble nucleation was investigated in a 20-mm-long, wickless heat pipe on the International Space Station. Over 20 h of running experiments using pentane as the working fluid, more than 100 nucleation events were observed. Bubble nucleation at the heater end temporarily boosted peak pressures and vapor temperatures in the device. At the moment of nucleation, the heater wall temperature significantly decreased due to increased evaporation and the original vapor bubble collapsed due to increased pressure. A thermal model was developed and using the measured temperatures and pressures, heat transfer coefficients near the heater end of the system were extracted. Peak heat transfer coefficients during the nucleation event were over a factor of three higher than at steady-state. The heat transfer coefficient data were all collapsed in the form of a single, linear correlation relating the Nusselt number to the Ohnesorge number.

Bubble nucleation and growth on microstructured surfaces under microgravity.

Project description:Understanding the dynamics of surface bubble formation and growth on heated surfaces holds significant implications for diverse modern technologies. While such investigations are traditionally confined to terrestrial conditions, the expansion of space exploration and economy necessitates insights into thermal bubble phenomena in microgravity. In this work, we conduct experiments in the International Space Station to study surface bubble nucleation and growth in a microgravity environment and compare the results to those on Earth. Our findings reveal significantly accelerated bubble nucleation and growth rates, outpacing the terrestrial rates by up to ~30 times. Our thermofluidic simulations confirm the role of gravity-induced thermal convective flow, which dissipates heat from the substrate surface and thus influences bubble nucleation. In microgravity, the influence of thermal convective flow diminishes, resulting in localized heat at the substrate surface, which leads to faster temperature rise. This unique condition enables quicker bubble nucleation and growth. Moreover, we highlight the influence of surface microstructure geometries on bubble nucleation. Acting as heat-transfer fins, the geometries of the microstructures influence heat transfer from the substrate to the water. Finer microstructures, which have larger specific surface areas, enhance surface-to-liquid heat transfer and thus reduce the rate of surface temperature rise, leading to slower bubble nucleation. Our experimental and simulation results provide insights into thermal bubble dynamics in microgravity, which may help design thermal management solutions and develop bubble-based sensing technologies.

Plasmonic Bubble Nucleation in Binary Liquids.

Project description:Metal nanoparticles under laser irradiation can produce enormous heat due to surface plasmon resonance. When submerged in a liquid, this can lead to the nucleation of plasmonic bubbles. In the very early stage, the nucleation of a giant vapor bubble was observed with an ultrahigh-speed camera. In this study, the formation of this giant bubble on gold nanoparticles in six binary liquid combinations has been investigated. We find that the time delay between the beginning of the laser heating and the bubble nucleation is determined by the absolute amount of dissolved gas in the liquid. Moreover, the bubble volume mainly depends on the vaporization energy of the liquid, consisting of the latent heat of vaporization and the energy needed to reach the boiling temperature. Our results contribute to controlling the initial giant bubble nucleation and have strong bearings on applications of such bubbles.

Novel 2D Layered MXene Nanofluids for Enhancing the Convective Heat Transfer Performance of Double-Pipe Heat Exchangers.

Project description:This paper proposes a new class of novel 2D layered structured materials, such as MXene (MX), for the synthesis of innovative nanofluids as coolants to evaluate the convective heat transfer performance of a double-pipe heat exchanger (DPHE). Convective heat transfer experiments were successfully conducted in lab-scale fabricated DPHE using low-concentration MXene nanofluids by varying the volume concentration of MXene nanoparticles (0.01-0.05 vol %) in different base fluids. The influence of the MXene nanofluids on various convective heat transfer parameters, such as LMTD, Nusselt number, heat transfer coefficient, and heat transfer rate without using any inserts in the DPHE was experimentally investigated. The results of the experiments revealed that the heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number increase with increasing Reynolds number (Re) and concentration of MXene nanoparticles in the base fluids. Maximum enhancement in heat transfer coefficient (126%) was achieved for methanol-based MXene nanofluids at 0.05 vol %. Moreover, the Nusselt number exhibits a maximum enhancement of ∼50% for methanol- and water-based MXene nanofluids. In contrast, the thermal performance factor was also estimated, and it was observed that water- and methanol- based MXene nanofluids showed higher values than castor oil- and silicone oil-based MXene nanofluids. Finally, the LMTD and heat transfer coefficients were successfully validated using Aspen HYSYS 12.1 software.

Experimental data on Helically Coiled Oscillating Heat Pipe (HCOHP) design and thermal performance.

Project description:Experimental and derived data from three Helically Coiled Oscillating Heat Pipes (HCOHPs) charged with ethanol, methanol and deionized water working fluids respectively are presented. The data was obtained from prototypes of the HCOHPs fabricated out of copper and tested under laboratory conditions. The primary data presented covers the HCOHP aspects, charging of the working fluid and temperature measurements from Omega K-type Thermocouples installed on the evaporators, condensers, adiabatic sections, and on the cylindrical copper vessel integrated with it. The derived data covers the HCOHPs performances and thermal contact resistance experienced during laboratory testing. The data on the aspects and charging of the working fluid provides useful information for the validation of design parameters of other heat pipes. The measured temperature data and the derived performance data can used to validate the performance of heat pipes in other studies and to depict performance profiles in standard text and reference books. The nature of the data presented as a whole would be useful for comparative analysis involving heat pipes and other passive heat transfer devices.

Reconciling bubble nucleation in explosive eruptions with geospeedometers.

Project description:Magma from Plinian volcanic eruptions contains an extraordinarily large numbers of bubbles. Nucleation of those bubbles occurs because pressure decreases as magma rises to the surface. As a consequence, dissolved magmatic volatiles, such as water, become supersaturated and cause bubbles to nucleate. At the same time, diffusion of volatiles into existing bubbles reduces supersaturation, resulting in a dynamical feedback between rates of nucleation due to magma decompression and volatile diffusion. Because nucleation rate increases with supersaturation, bubble number density (BND) provides a proxy record of decompression rate, and hence the intensity of eruption dynamics. Using numerical modeling of bubble nucleation, we reconcile a long-standing discrepancy in decompression rate estimated from BND and independent geospeedometers. We demonstrate that BND provides a record of the time-averaged decompression rate that is consistent with independent geospeedometers, if bubble nucleation is heterogeneous and facilitated by magnetite crystals.

Strong Transient Flows Generated by Thermoplasmonic Bubble Nucleation.

Project description:The challenge of inducing and controlling localized fluid flows for generic force actuation and for achieving efficient mass transport in microfluidics is key to the development of next-generation miniaturized systems for chemistry and life sciences. Here we demonstrate a methodology for the robust generation and precise quantification of extremely strong flow transients driven by vapor bubble nucleation on spatially isolated plasmonic nanoantennas excited by light. The system is capable of producing peak flow speeds of the order mm/s at modulation rates up to ∼100 Hz in water, thus allowing for a variety of high-throughput applications. Analysis of flow dynamics and fluid viscosity dependence indicates that the transient originates in the rapid bubble expansion that follows nucleation rather than being strictly thermocapillary in nature.

Fabrication and Thermal Performance of a Polymer-Based Flexible Oscillating Heat Pipe via 3D Printing Technology.

Project description:As flexible electronic technologies rapidly developed with a requirement for multifunction, miniaturization, and high power density, effective thermal management has become an increasingly important issue. The oscillating heat pipe, as a promising technology, was used to dissipate high heat fluxes and had a wide range of applications. In this paper, we reported the fabrication and heat transfer performance evaluation of a polymer-based flexible oscillating heat pipe (FOHP) prepared using 3D printing technology. The 3D-printed inner surface presented excellent wettability to the working fluid, which was beneficial for the evaporation of the working fluid. Ethanol was selected as the working fluid, and the influence of the filling ratios range of 30-60% on heat transfer performance was analyzed. It was found that a 3D-printed FOHP with a filling ratio of 40% presented the best heat transfer performance with the lowest thermal resistance, and the fabricated heat pipes could be easily bent from 0° to 90°. With the best filling ratio, the thermal resistance of the FOHPs increased with larger bending angles. In addition, the 3D-printed FOHP was successfully applied for the thermal management of flexible printed circuits, and the results showed that the temperature of flexible printed circuits was kept within 72 °C, and its service life was guaranteed.

A general mechanism for transcription bubble nucleation in bacteria.

Project description:Bacterial transcription initiation requires σ factors for nucleation of the transcription bubble. The canonical housekeeping σ factor, σ70, nucleates DNA melting via recognition of conserved bases of the promoter -10 motif, which are unstacked and captured in pockets of σ70. By contrast, the mechanism of transcription bubble nucleation and formation during the unrelated σN-mediated transcription initiation is poorly understood. Herein, we combine structural and biochemical approaches to establish that σN, like σ70, captures a flipped, unstacked base in a pocket formed between its N-terminal region I (RI) and extra-long helix features. Strikingly, RI inserts into the nascent bubble to stabilize the nucleated bubble prior to engagement of the obligate ATPase activator. Our data suggest a general paradigm of transcription initiation that requires σ factors to nucleate an early melted intermediate prior to productive RNA synthesis.

Condensation heat transfer in microgravity conditions.

Project description:In the present paper, a thorough review of the experimental and numerical studies dealing with filmwise and dropwise condensation under microgravity is reported, covering mechanisms both inside tubes and on plain or enhanced surfaces. The gravity effect on the condensation heat transfer is examined considering the results of studies conducted both in terrestrial environment and in the absence of gravity. From the literature, it can be inferred that the influence of gravity on the condensation heat transfer inside tubes can be limited by increasing the mass flux of the operating fluid and, at equal mass flux, by decreasing the channel diameter. There are flow conditions at which gravity does exert a negligible effect during in-tube condensation: predictive tools for identifying such conditions and for the evaluation of the condensation heat transfer coefficient are also discussed. With regard to dropwise condensation, if liquid removal depends on gravity, this prevents its application in low gravity space systems. Alternatively, droplets can be removed by the high vapor velocity or by passive techniques based on the use of condensing surfaces with wettability gradients or micrometric/nanometric structuration: these represent an interesting solution for exploiting the benefits of dropwise condensation in terms of heat transfer enhancement and equipment compactness in microgravitational environments. The experimental investigation of the condensation heat transfer for long durations in steady-state zero-gravity conditions, such as inside the International Space Station, may compensate the substantial lack of repeatable experimental data and allow the development of reliable design tools for space applications.

Superheating and homogeneous single bubble nucleation in a solid-state nanopore.

Project description:We demonstrate extreme superheating and single bubble nucleation in an electrolyte solution within a nanopore in a thin silicon nitride membrane. The high temperatures are achieved by Joule heating from a highly focused ionic current induced to flow through the pore by modest voltage biases. Conductance, nucleation, and bubble evolution are monitored electronically and optically. Temperatures near the thermodynamic limit of superheat are achieved just before bubble nucleation with the system at atmospheric pressure. Bubble nucleation is homogeneous and highly reproducible. This nanopore approach more generally suggests broad application to the excitation, detection, and characterization of highly metastable states of matter.
