A study on the mechanism of oxidized quinoline removal from acid solutions based on persulfate-iron systems.

ABSTRACT: Quinoline (Qu) and its derivatives have been widely regarded as hazardous pollutants in the world because of their acute toxicity to humans and animals, and potential carcinogenic risks. In this study, a novel sulfate radical system co-activated by ferrous and ZVI was developed to remove Qu from acidic solutions. The optimal ratio of ferrous and ZVI in the system and the mechanism of Qu removal from acidic solutions are also explored. The ZVI can initiate activation using hydrogen ions, which are released from the reaction of Fe²⁺, organics and PS in acidic solutions. This may dramatically improve the overall removal efficiency of Qu. The results indicated that the initial removal rate of Qu increases from 85.8% to 92.9%. The cleavage pathway of Qu is speculated by Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory and verified by GC/MS analysis.

Mechanism of phosphate removal from aqueous solutions by biochar supported nanoscale zero-valent iron.

Project description:The purpose of this study was to investigate the removal mechanism of phosphate by rape straw biochar (RSBC) supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI). BET, TEM, FTIR and XPS characterizations of the composite material (nZVI-RSBC) indicated that nZVI was successfully supported on the RSBC, and nZVI-RSBC had a high specific surface area and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. Batch experiments showed that the adsorption data could be fitted well with the Sips isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, suggesting that phosphate adsorption onto RSBC and nZVI-RSBC was due to surface and chemical processes. The maximum adsorption capacities of RSBC and nZVI-RSBC for phosphate obtained by the Sips isotherm model fitting were 3.49 mg g-1 and 12.14 mg g-1, respectively. The pH value of the solution greatly affected the adsorption capacity of nZVI-RSBC for phosphate. The combined results of batch experiments and characterizations revealed that the possible mechanism was the complexation of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of nZVI-RSBC with phosphate, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic attraction between phosphate and the positively charged adsorption sites under acidic conditions. Such a strong adsorption capacity, as well as the characteristics of easy availability, excellent recyclability and low cost, make nZVI-RSBC potentially suitable for the treatment of phosphate-rich water.

The efficiency and mechanism of dibutyl phthalate removal by copper-based metal organic frameworks coupled with persulfate.

Project description:Copper-based metal organic framework (Cu-BTC) was prepared and used to remove dibutyl phthalate (DBP) in the presence of persulfate (PS). The surface characteristics, textural properties, and stability of activated Cu-BTC (denoted as Cu-BTC-A) were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, N2 physical adsorption-desorption, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The effects of parameters such as initial pH, PS concentration, catalyst dosage, and free-radical quenchers have been investigated. The results showed that DBP could be removed in a wide pH range by Cu-BTC-A via mechanisms of adsorption and heterogeneous catalytic reaction. Unfortunately, the DBP removal was not completed because of radical scavenging reactions in Cu-BTC-A cages where PS can enter freely but DBP is blocked outside. Another explanation was that Cu-BTC-A showed a low adsorption capacity for DBP because the molecular size of DBP (15.84 × 11.00 × 7.56 Å) is larger than microporous cages (approximately 9 × 9 Å in diameter) of Cu-BTC-A.

Ultrasonic Activation of Persulfate for the Removal of BPA in 20, 28, and 300 kHz Systems.

Project description:The effect of ultrasound (US) on persulfate (PS) activation was investigated to determine whether acoustic cavitation can effectively induce PS activation for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation at 20, 28, and 300 kHz under various temperature conditions. The optimal liquid volume in the vessel was geometrically determined to be 400, 900, and 420 mL at 20, 28, and 300 kHz, respectively, using KI dosimetry and sonochemiluminescence image analysis. The pseudo-1st-order reaction kinetic constants in the only PS, only US, and US/PS processes at 20, 28, and 300 kHz were obtained under 5-10 ℃, 15-20 ℃, 25-30 ℃, 45-50 ℃, 55-60 ℃, and no temperature control conditions. No notable BPA degradation occurred at 5-10 ℃, 15-20 ℃, and 25-30 ℃ in the only PS processes for all frequencies. The highest sonochemical BPA degradation was obtained at 300 kHz, and much lower BPA degradation was observed at 45-50 ℃ and 55-60 ℃ for all frequencies in the only US processes. No notable enhancement of BPA degradation was observed at 5-10 ℃, 15-20 ℃, and 25-30 ℃ in the US/PS processes compared to the only US processes for all frequencies. At 20 kHz and temperatures between 55 and 60 ℃, the highest BPA degradation was obtained, with a synergistic effect of 171 %. However, the enhancement might be due to the instant or local temperature increase, and not due to acoustic cavitation. No notable PS activation by US irradiation was observed in the US/PS processes in this study. The profiles of the generated sulfate ion concentrations in the US/PS processes confirmed this. Some previous studies found high synergistic effects, whereas others have found low or no synergistic effects in US/PS processes.

Efficient activation of persulfate by calcium sulfate whisker supported nanoscale zero-valent iron for methyl orange removal.

Project description:In order to improve the utilization of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) in activating persulfate (PS), a composite material of nZVI/CSW with nZVI supported on calcium sulfate whiskers (CSWs) was synthesized in this study. The activity of the nZVI/CSW-PS system was evaluated by the removal of methyl orange (MO) in the aqueous phase. With the optimization of response surface methodology (RSM), the degradation efficiency of 20.0 mg L-1 MO could increase to 98.13% in 5 min at the dosage of 1.03 g L-1 nZVI/CSW-2, 3.51 mM PS at a temperature of 40.8 °C. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests showed that the nZVI particles were well dispersed on the CSW surface in a Fe2+/CSW molar ratio of 0.25 : 1, which is approximate to the theoretical value of 3.698 mg g-1 thin-layer-Fe supported on CSW. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the thin-layer nZVI particles were the most efficient in activating PS, and nZVI was rapidly dispersed during the dissolution process of CSW, which greatly increased the reaction rate. γ-FeOOH is the main reaction product of nZVI/CSW-2. This study provides a novel advanced oxidation system with nZVI/CSW in wastewater pollution control.

Naphthenic acids removal from high TDS produced water by persulfate mediated iron oxide functionalized catalytic membrane, and by nanofiltration.

Project description:Oil industries generate large amounts of produced water containing organic contaminants, such as naphthenic acids (NA) and very high concentrations of inorganic salts. Recovery of potable water from produced water can be highly energy intensive is some cases due to its high salt concentration, and safe discharge is more suitable. Here, we explored catalytic properties of iron oxide (FexOy nanoparticles) functionalized membranes in oxidizing NA from water containing high concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS) using persulfate as an oxidizing agent. Catalytic decomposition of persulfate by FexOy functionalized membranes followed pseudo-first order kinetics with an apparent activation energy of 18 Kcal/mol. FexOy functionalized membranes were capable of lowering the NA concentrations to less than discharge limits of 10 ppm at 40 °C. Oxidation state of iron during reaction was quantified. Membrane performance was investigated for extended period of time. A coupled process of advanced oxidation catalyzed by membrane and nanofiltration was also evaluated. Commercially available nanofiltration membranes were found capable of retaining NA from water containing high concentrations of dissolved salts. Commercial NF membranes, Dow NF270 (Dow), and NF8 (Nanostone) had NA rejection of 79% and 82%, respectively. Retentate for the nanofiltration was further treated with advanced oxidation catalyzed by FexOy functionalized membrane for removal of NA.

Iron(II)/Persulfate Mediated Newman-Kwart Rearrangement.

Electron-rich substrates react rapidly under moderate heating to afford the rearranged products in excellent yields. The mild conditions, rapid reaction rates, and suitability for scale up offers immediate practical benefits to access functionalized thiophenols.

Enhanced quinoline removal by zero-valent iron-coupled novel anaerobic processes: performance and underlying function analysis.

Project description:Quinoline is toxic and difficult to degrade biologically; thus, it is a serious threat to the safety of ecosystems. To promote quinoline reduction, zero-valent iron (ZVI) was introduced into an anaerobic digestion (AD) system through batch experiments. The performance of three different types of ZVI (i.e., iron powder, iron scrap and rusty iron scrap) on quinoline degradation, methane production, formation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were investigated systematically. Compared to the AD system alone, quinoline and COD removal as well as the production of methane and acetic acid were effectively enhanced by ZVI, especially rusty iron scrap. The removal efficiencies of quinoline and COD were increased by 28.6% and 19.9%, respectively. The enhanced effects were attributed to the high accumulation of ferrous ions and high pH self-buffering capability, which were established by ZVI addition. Furthermore, high-throughput sequencing analysis indicated that the functional microorganisms in the ZVI-AD system were higher than in the AD system, and the added types of ZVI played important roles in structuring the innate microbial community in waste activated sludge (WAS). Especially, high enrichment of microorganisms capable of degrading quinoline, such as Pseudomonas and Bacillus, in the coupled system was detected.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron/persulfate enhanced upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor for dye removal: Insight into microbial metabolism and microbial community.

Project description:This study investigated the efficiency of nanoscale zero-valent iron combined with persulfate (NZVI/PS) for enhanced degradation of brilliant red X-3B in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, and examined the effects of NZVI/PS on anaerobic microbial communities during the treatment process. The addition of NZVI (0.5 g/L) greatly enhanced the decolourization rate of X-3B from 63.8% to 98.4%. The Biolog EcoPlateTM technique was utilized to examine microbial metabolism in the reactor, and the Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing revealed 22 phyla and 88 genera of the bacteria. The largest genera (Lactococcus) decreased from 33.03% to 7.94%, while the Akkermansia genera increased from 1.69% to 20.23% according to the abundance in the presence of 0.2 g/L NZVI during the biological treatment process. Meanwhile, three strains were isolated from the sludge in the UASB reactors and identified by 16 S rRNA analysis. The distribution of three strains was consistent with the results from the Illumina MiSeq high throughput sequencing. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that Fe(0) was transformed into Fe(II)/Fe(III) during the treatment process, which are beneficial for the microorganism growth, and thus promoting their metabolic processes and microbial community.

Highly magnetic hybrid foams based on aligned tannic acid-coated iron oxide nanoparticles and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers.

Project description:Lightweight iron oxide nanoparticle (IONP)/TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCNF) hybrid foams with an anisotropic structure and a high IONP content were produced using magnetic field-enhanced unidirectional ice-templating. Coating the IONP with tannic acid (TA) improved the processability, the mechanical performance, and the thermal stability of the hybrid foams. Increasing the IONP content (and density) increased the Young's modulus and toughness probed in compression, and hybrid foams with the highest IONP content were relatively flexible and could recover 14% axial compression. Application of a magnetic field in the freezing direction resulted in the formation of IONP chains that decorated the foam walls and the foams displayed a higher magnetization saturation, remanence, and coercivity compared to the ice-templated hybrid foams. The hybrid foam with an IONP content of 87% displayed a saturation magnetization of 83.2 emu g-1, which is 95% of the value for bulk magnetite. Highly magnetic hybrid foams are of potential interest for environmental remediation, energy storage, and electromagnetic interference shielding.

Iron-modified activated carbon derived from agro-waste for enhanced dye removal from aqueous solutions.

Project description:Background and aimFinding a cost-effective adsorbent can be an obstacle to large-scale applications of adsorption. This study used an efficient activated carbon adsorbent based on agro-waste for dye removal.MethodsPistachio shells as abundant local agro-wastes were used to prepare activated carbon. Then, it was modified with iron to improve its characteristics. Acid red 14 was used as a model dye in various conditions of adsorption (AR14 concentration 20-150 mg L-1, pH 3-10, adsorbent dosage 0.1-0.3 g L-1, and contact time 5-60 min).ResultsA mesoporous adsorbent was prepared from pistachio shells with 811.57 m2 g-1 surface area and 0.654 cm3 g-1 pore volume. Iron modification enhanced the characteristics of activated carbon (surface area by 33.3% and pore volume by 64.1%). Adsorption experiments showed the high effectiveness of iron-modified activated carbon for AR14 removal (>99%, >516 mg g-1). The adsorption followed the pseudo-second kinetic model (k = 0.0005 g mg-1 min-1) and the Freundlich isotherm model (Kf = 152.87, n = 4.61). Besides, the reaction occurred spontaneously (ΔG0 = -36.65 to -41.12 kJ mol-1) and was exothermic (ΔH0 = -41.86 kJ mol-1 and ΔS0 = -3.34 J mol-1 K-1).ConclusionIron-modified activated carbon derived from pistachio shells could be cost-effective for the treatment of industrial wastewater containing dyes.
