An algorithm of calculating transport parameters of thermoelectric materials using single Kane band model with Riemann integral methods.

ABSTRACT: We develop an algorithm called SKBcal to conveniently calculate within minutes the thermoelectric transport parameters such as reduced Fermi level (η), electronic thermal conductivity (κ_e), lattice thermal conductivity (κ_l), Hall factor (A), effective mass (m^*), quality factor (β) and theoretical zT within the framework of single Kane band (SKB) model. The generalized Fermi-Dirac integral for SKB model is integrated by left Riemann integral method. A concept of significant digits of relative error is involved to determine the accuracy of calculation. Furthermore, a combined program of "For" and "While" is coded to set up an iteration for refining the reduced Fermi level. To easily obtain the quality factor, we re-derive the expression into a formula related to carrier mobility. The results calculated by SKBcal are consistent with the data reported in the literatures.

Multi-localization transport behaviour in bulk thermoelectric materials.

Project description:Simultaneously optimizing electrical and thermal transport properties of bulk thermoelectric materials remains a key challenge due to the conflicting combination of material traits. Here, we have explored the electrical and thermal transport features of In-filled CoSb3 through X-ray absorption fine structure, X-ray photoemission spectra, transport measurement and theoretical calculation. The results provide evidence of three types of coexisting multi-localization transport behaviours in the material; these are heat-carrying phonon-localized resonant scattering, accelerated electron movement and increase in density of states near the Fermi level. The 5p-orbital hybridization between In and Sb is discovered in the In-filled CoSb3 compound, which results in a charge transfer from Sb to In and the enhancement of p-d orbital hybridization between Co and Sb. Our work demonstrates that the electrical and thermal properties of filled skutterudite bulk thermoelectric materials can be simultaneously optimized through the three types of coexisting multi-localization transport behaviours in an independent way.

Conditions for Thermoelectric Power Factor Improvements upon Band Alignment in Complex Bandstructure Materials.

Project description:Band alignment (or band convergence) is a strategy suggested to provide improvements in the thermoelectric power factor (PF) of materials with complex bandstructures. The addition of more bands at the energy region that contributes to transport can provide more conducting paths and could improve the electrical conductivity and PF of a material. However, this can lead to increased intervalley scattering, which will tend to degrade the conductivity. Using the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) and a multiband model, we theoretically investigate the conditions under which band alignment can improve the PF. We show that PF improvements are realized when intraband scattering between the aligned bands dominates over interband scattering, with larger improvements reached when a light band is brought into alignment. In the more realistic scenario of intra- and interband scattering coexistence, we show that in the light band alignment case, possibilities of PF improvement are present even down to the level where the intra- and interband scattering are of similar strength. For heavy band alignment, this tolerance is weaker, and weaker interband scattering is necessary to realize PF improvements. On the other hand, when interband scattering dominates, it is not possible to realize any PF improvements upon band alignment, irrespective of bringing a light or a heavy band into alignment. Overall, to realize PF improvements upon band alignment, the valleys that are brought into alignment need to be as electrically conducting as possible compared to the lower energy base valleys and interact as little as possible with those.

Realizing high figure of merit in heavy-band p-type half-Heusler thermoelectric materials.

Project description:Solid-state thermoelectric technology offers a promising solution for converting waste heat to useful electrical power. Both high operating temperature and high figure of merit zT are desirable for high-efficiency thermoelectric power generation. Here we report a high zT of ∼1.5 at 1,200 K for the p-type FeNbSb heavy-band half-Heusler alloys. High content of heavier Hf dopant simultaneously optimizes the electrical power factor and suppresses thermal conductivity. Both the enhanced point-defect and electron-phonon scatterings contribute to a significant reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity. An eight couple prototype thermoelectric module exhibits a high conversion efficiency of 6.2% and a high power density of 2.2 W cm(-2) at a temperature difference of 655 K. These findings highlight the optimization strategy for heavy-band thermoelectric materials and demonstrate a realistic prospect of high-temperature thermoelectric modules based on half-Heusler alloys with low cost, excellent mechanical robustness and stability.

Enhancing the Figure of Merit of Heavy-Band Thermoelectric Materials Through Hierarchical Phonon Scattering.

Heavy-band FeNbSb half-Heusler system with intrinsically low carrier mean free path is demonstrated as a paradigm. An enhanced zT of 1.34 is obtained at 1150 K for the Fe1.05Nb0.75Ti0.25Sb compound with intentionally designed hierarchical scattering centers.

Phonon transport control by nanoarchitecture including epitaxial Ge nanodots for Si-based thermoelectric materials.

Project description:Phonon transport in Si films was controlled using epitaxially-grown ultrasmall Ge nanodots (NDs) with ultrahigh density for the purpose of developing Si-based thermoelectric materials. The Si/Ge ND stacked structures, which were formed by the ultrathin SiO2 film technique, exhibited lower thermal conductivities than those of the conventional nanostructured SiGe bulk alloys, despite the stacked structures having a smaller Ge fraction. This came from the large thermal resistance caused by phonon scattering at the Si/Ge ND interfaces. The phonon scattering can be controlled by the Ge ND structure, which was independent of Si layer structure for carrier transport. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of ultrasmall epitaxial Ge NDs as phonon scattering sources, opening up a route for the realisation of Si-based thermoelectric materials.

Oxide Materials for Thermoelectric Conversion.

Project description:Thermoelectric technology has emerged as a prominent area of research in the past few decades for harnessing waste heat and improving the efficiency of next-generation renewable energy technologies. There has been rapid progress in the development of high-performance thermoelectric materials, as measured by the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT = S2 · σ · κ-1). Several heavy-metal-based thermoelectric materials with commercial-level performance (ZT = 1) have so far been proposed. However, the extensive application of these materials still faces challenges due to their low thermal/chemical stability, high toxicity, and limited abundance in the Earth's crust. In contrast, oxide-based thermoelectric materials, such as ZnO, SrTiO3, layered cobalt oxides, etc., have attracted growing interest as they can overcome the limitations of their heavy-metal-based counterparts. In this review, we summarize the recent research progress and introduce improvement strategies in oxide-based thermoelectric materials. This will provide an overview of their development history and design schemes, ultimately aiding in enhancing the overall performance of oxide-based thermoelectric materials.

Oxidation Control to Augment Interfacial Charge Transport in Te-P3HT Hybrid Materials for High Thermoelectric Performance.

Project description:Organic-inorganic hybrid thermoelectric (TE) materials have attracted tremendous interest for harvesting waste heat energy. Due to their mechanical flexibility, inorganic-organic hybrid TE materials are considered to be promising candidates for flexible energy harvesting devices. In this work, enhanced TE properties of Tellurium (Te) nanowires (NWs)- poly (3-hexylthiophene-2, 5-diyl) (P3HT) hybrid materials are reported by improving the charge transport at interfacial layer mediated via controlled oxidation. A power factor of ≈9.8 µW (mK2)-1 is obtained at room temperature for oxidized P3HT-TeNWs hybrid materials, which increases to ≈64.8 µW (mK2)-1 upon control of TeNWs oxidation. This value is sevenfold higher compared to P3HT-TeNWs-based hybrid materials reported in the literature. MD simulation reveals that oxidation-free TeNWs demonstrate better templating for P3HT polymer compared to oxidized TeNWs. The Kang-Snyder model is used to study the charge transport in these hybrid materials. A large σE0 value is obtained which is related to better templating of P3HT on oxygen-free TeNWs. This work provides evidence that oxidation control of TeNWs is critical for better interface-driven charge transport, which enhances the thermoelectric properties of TeNWs-P3HT hybrid materials. This work provides a new avenue to improve the thermoelectric properties of a new class of hybrid thermoelectric materials.

Effect of optional biometric parameters in the Kane formula on intraocular lens power calculation.

Project description:PurposeTo investigate the effect of the optional biometric parameters lens thickness (LT) and center corneal thickness (CCT) in the Kane formula on intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation.MethodsA cross-sectional study included consecutive cataract patients who received uncomplicated cataract surgery with IOL implantation from May to September 2022 were enrolled. The ocular biometric parameters were obtained using IOLMaster 700 and then inputted into online Kane formula calculator. The IOL power was calculated for targeting emmetropia and compared between groups: not omitting (NO) group, omitting LT and CCT (OLC) group, omitting LT (OL) group and omitting CCT (OC) group. Further, according to the axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and mean keratometry (Km), the eyes were divided into three subgroups, respectively.Results1005 eyes of 1005 consecutive patients were included. There was no significant difference in IOL power between NO group and OC group (P = 0.064), and the median absolute difference (MedAD) was 0.05D. The IOL power in NO group showed significant differences from OLC group and OL group respectively (P < 0.001), and both MedAD values were 0.18D. Among AL subgroups, MedAD ranged from 0.06D to 0.35D in short eyes. Among ACD subgroups, the above values ranged from 0.06D to 0.23D in shallow ACD subgroup. Among Km subgroups, these values ranged from 0.05D to 0.31D in steep Km subgroup.ConclusionThe optional biometric parameter CCT has no effect on the calculation results of the Kane formula, whereas the parameter LT has a great influence on the Kane formula results for the IOL power calculation in cataract patients with short AL, shallow ACD and steep Km.

Decoupling Thermoelectric Performance and Stability in Liquid-Like Thermoelectric Materials.

Project description:Liquid-like materials are one family of promising thermoelectric materials discovered in the past years due to their advantanges of ultrahigh thermoelectric figure of merit (zT), low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, their practial applications are greatly limited by the low service stability from the Cu/Ag metal deposition under large current and/or temperature gradient. Both high zT for high efficiency and large critical voltage for good stability are required for liquid-like materials, but they are usually strongly correlated and hard to be tuned individually. Herein, based on the thermodynamic analysis, it is shown that such a correlation can be decoupled through doping immobile ions into the liquid-like sublattice. Taking Cu2- δ S as an example, doping immobile Fe ions in Cu1.90S scarcely degrades the initial large critical voltage, but significantly enhances the zT to 1.5 at 1000 K by tuning the carrier concentration to the optimal range. Combining the low-cost and environmentally friendly features, these Fe-doped Cu2- δ S-based compounds show great potential in civil applications. This study sheds light on the realization of both good stability and high performance for many other liquid-like thermoelectric materials that have not been considered for real applications before.
