Flexible translucent chitosan-glycerin/QD nanocomposite glue for anti-counterfeiting films with strong adhesion and stability.

ABSTRACT: With the rapid development of commodity circulation, more attention has been paid to the anticounterfeiting technology of commodities, including stability, universality and ease of distinguishing. The authors report the use of gelatin-chitosan-glycerin/QD nanocomposite-functionalized glue for luminescent anti-counterfeiting labels. As the blend and plasticizer, the addition of chitosan and glycerin effectively improved the flexibility and formability of the gelatin-chitosan-glycerin/QD composite films, which show excellent mechanical properties, including high transparency, luminescence and flexibility, and they are easy to prepare on a large scale, providing certain reference values for new anticounterfeiting technology applying a variety of morphologies.

Freestanding Translucent ZnO-Cellulose Nanocomposite Films for Ultraviolet Sensor Applications.

Project description:The rapidly advancing technology of wearable and miniaturized electronics has increased the demand for low-cost high-performance flexible sensors. Herein, the preparation of translucent freestanding films consisting of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) via a simple spray coating method is presented. The obtained nanocomposite films were thin (~10 µm) and flexible. The scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy analysis revealed that the nanocomposite film was composed of regions of ZnO NP-modified CNFs and regions of aggregation of ZnO NPs with each other. The electrical conductance of the films was rapidly increased beyond 40 wt.% ZnO and reached up to >50 nA at 60 wt.% ZnO. This was attributed to the increased number of conductive paths formed by the ZnO NPs in the nanocomposite film when a certain threshold was crossed. The ZnO-CNF nanocomposite film exhibited a stable response over on/off cycles of UV light exposure. The responsivity and sensitivity of the nanocomposite film with 60 wt.% ZnO were 36.5 mA/W and 247, respectively. Even when the device was curved (radius of curvature: 3 mm), the response and sensitivity remained high. The developed nanocomposite films are expected to be applied as environmentally friendly flexible UV sensors.

Mechanical and biological properties of chitosan/carbon nanotube nanocomposite films.

Project description:In this article, different concentrations of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were homogeneously dispersed throughout the chitosan (CS) matrix. A simple solvent-cast method was used to fabricate chitosan films with 0.1, 0.5, and 1% of MWCNT with the average diameter around 30 nm. The CS/MWCNT films were characterized for structural, viscous and mechanical properties with optical microscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, tensile test machine, and microindentation testing machine. Murine osteoblasts were used to examine the cell viability and attachment of the nanocomposite films at two time points. In comparison to the pure chitosan film, the mechanical properties, including the tensile modulus and strength of the films, were greatly improved by increasing the percentage of MWCNT. Furthermore, adding MWCNT up to 1% increased the viscosity of the chitosan solution by 15%. However, adding MWCNT decreased the samples ductility and transparency. In biological point of view, no toxic effect on osteoblasts was observed in the presence of different percentages of MWCNT at day 3 and day 7. This investigation suggested MWCNT could be a promising candidate for improving chitosan mechanical properties without inducing remarkable cytotoxicity on bone cells.

Chitosan-Functionalized Graphene Nanocomposite Films: Interfacial Interplay and Biological Activity.

Project description:Graphene oxide (GO) has recently captured tremendous attention, but only few functionalized graphene derivatives were used as fillers, and insightful studies dealing with the thermal, mechanical, and biological effects of graphene surface functionalization are currently missing in the literature. Herein, reduced graphene oxide (rGO), phosphorylated graphene oxide (PGO), and trimethylsilylated graphene oxide (SiMe3GO) were prepared by the post-modification of GO. The electrostatic interactions of these fillers with chitosan afforded colloidal solutions that provide, after water evaporation, transparent and flexible chitosan-modified graphene films. All reinforced chitosan-graphene films displayed improved mechanical, thermal, and antibacterial (S. aureus, E. coli) properties compared to native chitosan films. Hemolysis, intracellular catalase activity, and hemoglobin oxidation were also observed for these materials. This study shows that graphene functionalization provides a handle for tuning the properties of graphene-reinforced nanocomposite films and customizing their functionalities.

Thermoelectric Properties of Flexible PEDOT:PSS/Polypyrrole/Paper Nanocomposite Films.

Project description:Flexible poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)/polypyrrole/paper (PEDOT:PSS/PPy/paper) thermoelectric (TE) nanocomposite films were prepared by a two-step method: first, PPy/paper nanocomposite films were prepared by an in situ chemical polymerization process, and second, PEDOT:PSS/PPy/paper TE composite films were fabricated by coating the as-prepared PPy/paper nanocomposite films using a dimethyl sulfoxide-doped PEDOT:PSS solution. Both the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient of the PEDOT:PSS/PPy/paper TE nanocomposite films were greatly enhanced from 0.06 S/cm to ~0.365 S/cm, and from 5.44 μV/K to ~16.0 μV/K at ~300 K, respectively, when compared to the PPy/paper TE nanocomposite films. The thermal conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS/PPy/paper composite film (0.1522 Wm-1K-1 at ~300 K) was, however, only slightly higher than that of the PPy/paper composite film (0.1142 Wm-1K-1 at ~300 K). As a result, the ZT value of the PEDOT:PSS/PPy/paper composite film (~1.85 × 10-5 at ~300 K) was significantly enhanced when compared to that of the PPy/paper composite film (~4.73 × 10-7 at ~300 K). The as-prepared nanocomposite films have great potential for application in flexible TE devices.

Nanocomposite Films of Chitosan-Grafted Carbon Nano-Onions for Biomedical Applications.

Project description:The design of scaffolding from biocompatible and resistant materials such as carbon nanomaterials and biopolymers has become very important, given the high rate of injured patients. Graphene and carbon nanotubes, for example, have been used to improve the physical, mechanical, and biological properties of different materials and devices. In this work, we report the grafting of carbon nano-onions with chitosan (CS-g-CNO) through an amide-type bond. These compounds were blended with chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol composites to produce films for subdermal implantation in Wistar rats. Films with physical mixture between chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, and carbon nano-onions were also prepared for comparison purposes. Film characterization was performed with Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Tensile strength, X-ray Diffraction Spectroscopy (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The degradation of films into simulated body fluid (SBF) showed losses between 14% and 16% of the initial weight after 25 days of treatment. Still, a faster degradation (weight loss and pH changes) was obtained with composites of CS-g-CNO due to a higher SBF interaction by hydrogen bonding. On the other hand, in vivo evaluation of nanocomposites during 30 days in Wistar rats, subdermal tissue demonstrated normal resorption of the materials with lower inflammation processes as compared with the physical blends of ox-CNO formulations. SBF hydrolytic results agreed with the in vivo degradation for all samples, demonstrating that with a higher ox-CNO content increased the stability of the material and decreased its degradation capacity; however, we observed greater reabsorption with the formulations including CS-g-CNO. With this research, we demonstrated the future impact of CS/PVA/CS-g-CNO nanocomposite films for biomedical applications.

Portable amperometric immunosensor for histamine detection using Prussian blue-chitosan-gold nanoparticle nanocomposite films.

Project description:Histamine (HA) is a biogenic amine that can accumulate to high concentration levels in food as a result of microbial activity and can cause toxic effects in consumers. In this work, a portable electrochemical immunosensor capable of detecting HA with high sensitivity and selectivity was developed. Prussian blue-chitosan-gold nanoparticle (PB-CS-AuNP) nanocomposite films with excellent biocompatibility were synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The PB-CS-AuNP were coated onto a screen-printed electrode by one-step electrodeposition and used to conjugate the HA ovalbumin conjugate (HA-Ag). HA was determined by a competition between the coating HA-Ag and the HRP labeled HA antibody (HRP-HA-Ab). After careful optimization of assay conditions and Box-Behnken analysis, the developed immunosensor showed a linear range from 0.01 to 100μg/mL for HA in fish samples. The average recoveries from spiked samples ranged from 97.25% to 105%. The biosensor also showed good specificity, reproducibility, and stability, indicating its potential application in monitoring HA in a simple and low cost manner.

Fabrication of graphene oxide/montmorillonite nanocomposite flexible thin films with improved gas-barrier properties.

Project description:Nanocomposites are potential substitutes for inorganic materials in fabricating flexible gas-barrier thin films. In this study, two nanocomposites are used to form a flexible gas-barrier film that shows improved flexibility and a decreased water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), thereby extending the diffusion path length for gas molecules. The nanoclay materials used for the flexible gas-barrier thin film are Na+-montmorillonite (MMT) and graphene oxide (GO). A flexible gas-barrier thin film was fabricated using a layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition method, exploiting electronic bonding under non-vacuum conditions. The WVTR of the film, in which each layer was laminated by LBL assembly, was analyzed by Ca-test and the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) was analyzed by MOCON. When GO and MMT are used together, they fill each other's vacancies and form a gas-barrier film with high optical transmittance and the improved WVTR of 3.1 × 10-3 g per m2 per day without a large increase in thickness compared to barrier films produced with GO or MMT alone. Thus, this film has potential applicability as a barrier film in flexible electronic devices.

Fabrication of Conductive Tissue Engineering Nanocomposite Films Based on Chitosan and Surfactant-Stabilized Graphene Dispersions.

Project description:Chitosan (CS)/graphene nanocomposite films with tunable biomechanics, electroconductivity and biocompatibility using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and Pluronic F108 (Plu) as emulsion stabilizers for the purpose of conductive tissue engineering were successfully obtained. In order to obtain a composite solution, aqueous dispersions of multilayered graphene stabilized with Plu/PVP were supplied with CS at a ratio of CS to stabilizers of 2:1, respectively. Electroconductive films were obtained by the solution casting method. The electrical conductivity, mechanical properties and in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility of the resulting films were assessed in relation to the graphene concentration and stabilizer type and they were close to that of smooth muscle tissue. According to the results of the in vitro cytotoxicity analysis, the films did not release soluble cytotoxic components into the cell culture medium. The high adhesion of murine fibroblasts to the films indicated the absence of contact cytotoxicity. In subcutaneous implantation in Wistar rats, we found that stabilizers reduced the brittleness of the chitosan films and the inflammatory response.

Ultra-strong bio-glue from genetically engineered polypeptides.

Project description:The development of biomedical glues is an important, yet challenging task as seemingly mutually exclusive properties need to be combined in one material, i.e. strong adhesion and adaption to remodeling processes in healing tissue. Here, we report a biocompatible and biodegradable protein-based adhesive with high adhesion strengths. The maximum strength reaches 16.5 ± 2.2 MPa on hard substrates, which is comparable to that of commercial cyanoacrylate superglue and higher than other protein-based adhesives by at least one order of magnitude. Moreover, the strong adhesion on soft tissues qualifies the adhesive as biomedical glue outperforming some commercial products. Robust mechanical properties are realized without covalent bond formation during the adhesion process. A complex consisting of cationic supercharged polypeptides and anionic aromatic surfactants with lysine to surfactant molar ratio of 1:0.9 is driven by multiple supramolecular interactions enabling such strong adhesion. We demonstrate the glue's robust performance in vitro and in vivo for cosmetic and hemostasis applications and accelerated wound healing by comparison to surgical wound closures.

Engineering the Band Alignment in QD Heterojunction Films via Ligand Exchange.

Project description:Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) allow great flexibility in the design of optoelectronic devices, thanks to their size-dependent optical and electronic properties and the possibility to fabricate thin films with solution-based processing. In particular, in QD-based heterojunctions, the band gap of both components can be controlled by varying the size of the QDs. However, control over the band alignment between the two materials is required to tune the dynamics of carrier transfer across a heterostructure. We demonstrate that ligand exchange strategies can be used to control the band alignment of PbSe and CdSe QDs in a mixed QD solid, shifting it from a type-I to a type-II alignment. The change in alignment is observed in both spectroelectrochemical and transient absorption measurements, leading to a change in the energy of the conduction band edges in the two materials and in the direction of electron transfer upon photoexcitation. Our work demonstrates the possibility to tune the band offset of QD heterostructures via control of the chemical species passivating the QD surface, allowing full control over the energetics of the heterostructure without requiring changes in the QD composition.
