Versatile vapor phase deposition approach to cesium tin bromide materials CsSnBr₃, CsSn₂Br₅ and Cs₂SnBr₆.

ABSTRACT: We report on the successful application of RF-magnetron sputtering to deposit, by using a single type of target, three different materials in the form of thin films within the Cs-Sn-Br compositional range, namely, CsSnBr₃, CsSn₂Br₅ and Cs₂SnBr₆. It is shown that, by playing with the deposition parameters and post-deposition treatments, it is possible to stabilize these three perovskites or perovskite related compounds by exploiting the versatility of vapor phase deposition. Full characterization in terms of crystal structure, optical properties and morphology is reported. The power of vapor phase methods in growing all-inorganic materials of interest for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications is demonstrated here, indicating the advantageous use of sputtering for these complex materials.

Tin Oxide Nanoparticles via Solar Vapor Deposition for Hexavalent Chromium Remediation.

Project description:Tin oxide nanoparticles optimized to capture low concentrations of hexavalent chromium from water were developed through a facile, scalable, and low-cost one-step solar vapor deposition methodology. Considering the preservation of high electron donation capacity as the key to support the reduction of mobile Cr(VI) into insoluble forms, the growth of SnO nanoparticles was favored by the co-evaporation of SnO2 with Fe powders at various mass ratios. Characterization techniques indicated that the percentage and the stability of SnO is proportional to the Fe content in the target with a requirement of at least 50% wt to inhibit the formation of a passive SnO2 surface layer. The produced particles were evaluated regarding their efficiency to capture Cr(VI) under conditions similar to water treatment for drinking purposes (pH 7). It was revealed that passivation-free SnO nanoparticles deliver significant improvement in the adsorption capacity corresponding to the residual concentration of 25 μg/L, reaching a value of 1.74 mg/g for the sample prepared with 50% wt Fe in the target. The increase of water acidity was found responsible for the activation of more reduction sites on the particle surface, as reflected through the elevation of efficiency by more than 20% at pH 6.

Halide Mixing and Phase Segregation in Cs2AgBiX6 (X = Cl, Br, and I) Double Perovskites from Cesium-133 Solid-State NMR and Optical Spectroscopy.

Project description:All-inorganic double perovskites (elpasolites) are a promising potential alternatives to lead halide perovskites in optoelectronic applications. Although halide mixing is a well-established strategy for band gap tuning, little is known about halide mixing and phase segregation phenomena in double perovskites. Here, we synthesize a wide range of single- and mixed-halide Cs2AgBiX6 (X = Cl, Br, and I) double perovskites using mechanosynthesis and probe their atomic-level microstructure using 133Cs solid-state MAS NMR. We show that mixed Cl/Br materials form pure phases for any Cl/Br ratio while Cl/I and Br/I mixing is only possible within a narrow range of halide ratios (<3 mol % I) and leads to a complex mixture of products for higher ratios. We characterize the optical properties of the resulting materials and show that halide mixing does not lead to an appreciable tunability of the PL emission. We find that iodide incorporation is particularly pernicious in that it quenches the PL emission intensity and radiative charge carrier lifetimes for iodide ratios as low as 0.3 mol %. Our study shows that solid-state NMR, in conjunction with optical spectroscopies, provides a comprehensive understanding of the structure-activity relationships, halide mixing, and phase segregation phenomena in Cs2AgBiX6 (X = Cl, Br, and I) double perovskites.

Cesium Lead Bromide Nanocrystals: Synthesis, Modification, and Application to O2 Sensing.

Project description:The fluorescence intensity of inorganic CsPbBr3 (CPB) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) decreases in the presence of O2. In this study, we synthesized CPB NCs with various shapes and sizes for use as optical gas sensing materials. We fabricated O2 gas sensors from the various CPB NCs on several porous and nonporous substrates and examined the effects of the NC shapes and aggregate sizes and the substrate pore size on the device response. Our sensor fabricated from CPB nanocrystals on a porous substrate exhibited the highest response; the porous substrate allowed the rapid diffusion of O2 such that the NC surface was exposed effectively to the gas. Thus, the interfacial interaction between NC surfaces and substrates is a critical factor for consideration when preparing gas sensors with a high response.

Unveiling the Structural Properties, Optical Behavior, and Thermoelectric Performance of 2D CsSn2Br5 Halide Obtained by Mechanochemistry.

Project description:Metal halide perovskites with a two-dimensional structure are utilized in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. High-crystallinity CsSn2Br5 specimens have been synthesized via ball milling. Differential scanning calorimetry curves show melting at 553 K (endothermic) and recrystallization at 516 K (exothermic). Structural analysis using synchrotron X-ray diffraction data, collected from 100 to 373 K, allows for the determination of Debye model parameters. This analysis provides insights into the relative Cs-Br and Sn-Br chemical bonds within the tetragonal structure (space group: I4/mcm), which remains stable throughout the temperature range studied. Combined with neutron data, X-N techniques permit the identification of the Sn2+ lone electron pair (5s2) in the two-dimensional framework, occupying empty space opposite to the four Sn-Br bonds of the pyramidal [SnBr4] coordination polyhedra. Additionally, diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy unveils an indirect optical gap of approximately ∼3.3 eV, aligning with the calculated value from the B3LYP-DFT method (∼3.2 eV). The material exhibits a positive Seebeck coefficient as high as 6.5 × 104 μV K-1 at 350 K, which evolves down to negative values of -3.0 × 103 μV K-1 at 550 K, surpassing values reported for other halide perovskites. Notably, the thermal conductivity remains exceptionally low, between 0.32 and 0.25 W m-1 K-1.

Unexpected bowing band evolution in an all-inorganic CsSn1-x Pb x Br3 perovskite.

Project description:We theoretically investigated the structural and electronic properties of the all-inorganic perovskite CsSn1-x Pb x Br3, compared with the mixed perovskite compound MA y Cs1-y Sn1-x Pb x Br3, based on first-principle calculations. It has been demonstrated that Pb and Sn atoms are inclined to occupy the lattice sites uniformly in the all-inorganic perovskite, and this is distinguished from the most stable configurations observed in the mixed Cs-MA system. It is interesting that small Sn atoms prefer to stay close to the large MA+ cations, leading to smaller local structural distortion. Through spin-orbital coupling calculations, we found non-linear bowing band evolution in the all-inorganic mixed Sn-Pb system with a small bowing parameter (b = 0.35), while the band gap of MA y Cs1-y Sn1-x Pb x Br3 was clearly reduced as the ratio of MA was around 0.5 (y ≥ 0.25). We determined the bowing band evolution in the mixed cation perovskites and the intrinsic electronic deficiency of the all-inorganic perovskite to obtain the optimal band gap.

Optical and Structural Property Tuning in Physical Vapor Deposited Bismuth Halides Cs3Bi2(I1-xBrx)9 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1).

Project description:Crystalline films of lead-free all-inorganic Cs3Bi2X9 (X = Br, I) perovskites have been deposited by radio frequency (RF)-magnetron sputtering providing high-quality, single-phase films as confirmed by structural, morphological, and optical property characterization. Progressive tuning of crystal structure characteristics and optical absorbance has been achieved in mixed Br/I phases Cs3Bi2(I1-xBrx)9 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1), highlighting a shift of the band gap from about 2.0 eV for Cs3Bi2I9 to 2.64 eV for Cs3Bi2Br9. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering allowed defining the range of alloyed compositions where single-phase compositions are found. Finally, preliminary photocatalytic activity tests on the degradation of methylene blue provided solid data indicating the future possible exploitation of Bi-based perovskite derivative materials as active photocatalysts.

Pulsed Laser Deposition of Cs2AgBiBr6: from Mechanochemically Synthesized Powders to Dry, Single-Step Deposition.

Project description:Cs2AgBiBr6 has been proposed as a promising lead-free and stable double perovskite alternative to hybrid and lead-based perovskites. However, the low solubility of precursors during wet synthesis, or the distinct volatility of components during evaporation, results in complex multistep synthesis approaches, hampering the widespread employment of Cs2AgBiBr6 films. Here, we present pulsed laser deposition of Cs2AgBiBr6 films as a dry, single-step and single-source deposition approach for high-quality film formation. Cs2AgBiBr6 powders were prepared by mechanochemical synthesis and pressed into a solid target maintaining phase purity. Controlled laser ablation of the double perovskite target in vacuum and a substrate temperature of 200 °C results in the formation of highly crystalline Cs2AgBiBr6 films. We discuss the importance of deposition pressure to achieve stoichiometric transfer and of substrate temperature during PLD growth to obtain high-quality Cs2AgBiBr6 films with grain sizes > 200 nm. This work demonstrates the potential of PLD, an established technique in the semiconductor industry, to deposit complex halide perovskite materials while being compatible with optoelectronic device fabrication, such as UV and X-ray detectors.

Considerable matrix shift in the electronic transitions of helium-solvated cesium dimer cation Cs2He.

Project description:We investigate the photodissociation of helium-solvated cesium dimer cations using action spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. The spectrum of Cs2He+ shows three distinct absorption bands into both bound and dissociative states. Upon solvation with further helium atoms, considerable shifts of the absorption bands are observed, exceeding 0.1 eV (850 cm-1) already for Cs2He10+, along with significant broadening. The shifts are highly sensitive to the character of the excited state. Our calculations show that helium atoms adsorb on the ends of Cs2+. The shifts are particularly pronounced if the excited state orbitals extend to the area occupied by the helium atoms. In this case, Pauli repulsion leads to a deformation of the excited state orbitals, resulting in the observed blue shift of the transition. Since the position of the weakly bound helium atoms is ill defined, Pauli repulsion also explains the broadening.

Low-defect-density WS2 by hydroxide vapor phase deposition.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting monolayers such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising channel materials to extend Moore's Law in advanced electronics. Synthetic TMD layers from chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are scalable for fabrication but notorious for their high defect densities. Therefore, innovative endeavors on growth reaction to enhance their quality are urgently needed. Here, we report that the hydroxide W species, an extremely pure vapor phase metal precursor form, is very efficient for sulfurization, leading to about one order of magnitude lower defect density compared to those from conventional CVD methods. The field-effect transistor (FET) devices based on the proposed growth reach a peak electron mobility ~200 cm2/Vs (~800 cm2/Vs) at room temperature (15 K), comparable to those from exfoliated flakes. The FET device with a channel length of 100 nm displays a high on-state current of ~400 µA/µm, encouraging the industrialization of 2D materials.

Superconducting 2D NbS2 Grown Epitaxially by Chemical Vapor Deposition.

Project description:Metallic two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are attracting great attention because of their interesting low-temperature properties such as superconductivity, magnetism, and charge density waves (CDW). However, further studies and practical applications are being slowed down by difficulties in synthesizing high-quality materials with a large grain size and well-determined thickness. In this work, we demonstrate epitaxial chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of 2D NbS2 crystals on a sapphire substrate, with a thickness-dependent structural phase transition. NbS2 crystals are epitaxially aligned by the underlying c-plane sapphire resulting in high-quality growth. The thickness of NbS2 is well controlled by growth parameters to be between 1.5 and 10 nm with a large grain size of up to 500 μm. As the thickness increases, we observe in our NbS2 a transition from a metallic 3R-polytype to a superconducting 2H-polytype, confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electrical transport measurements. A Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) superconducting transition occurs in the CVD-grown 2H-phase NbS2 below the transition temperature (Tc) of 3 K. Our work demonstrates thickness and phase-controllable synthesis of high-quality superconducting 2D NbS2, which is imperative for its practical applications in next-generation TMDC-based electrical devices.
