Yttrium(iii) coordination polymer micro/nanospheres with single ligand and dual ligands.

ABSTRACT: In this work, yttrium(iii) coordination polymer (Y-CP) ball-flower-shaped microparticles with diameters ranging from 5 μm to 10 μm were synthesized using vanillin and asparagine as ligands under solvothermal conditions at 150 °C for 24 h. Then, we investigated the reaction influencing factors such as the concentration of reactants (involving vanillin, asparagine, and rare earth), reaction temperature, and reaction time. Both uniform and sphere-like nanoparticles with an average size of ∼50 nm were obtained using vanillin as a ligand at 120 °C for 12 h. Furthermore, the products were characterized and the results of cytotoxicity research demonstrated that the nanoparticles had low cytotoxicity and the coordination polymer nanospheres were perfectly biocompatible.

Project description:The title compound, poly[(μ 3-formato)(μ 4-oxalato)terbium(III)], [Tb(CHO2)(C2O4)] n , is a three-dimensional coordination polymer, and is isotypic with the La(III), Ce(III) and Sm(III) analogues. The asymmetric unit contains one Tb(III) ion, one formate anion (CHO2 (-)) and half of an oxalate anion (C2O4 (2-)), the latter being completed by application of inversion symmetry. The Tb(III) ion is nine-coordinated in a distorted tricapped trigonal-prismatic manner by two chelating carboxyl-ate groups from two C2O4 (2-) ligands, two carboxyl-ate oxygen atoms from another two C2O4 (2-) ligands and three oxygen atoms from three CHO2 (-) ligands, with the Tb-O bond lengths and the O-Tb-O bond angles ranging from 2.4165 (19) to 2.478 (3) Å and 64.53 (6) to 144.49 (4)°, respectively. The CHO2 (-) and C2O4 (2-) anions adopt μ 3-bridging and μ 4-chelating-bridging coordination modes, respectively, linking adjacent Tb(III) ions into a three-dimensional 12-connected fcu topology with point symbol (3(24).4(36).5(6)). The title compound exhibits thermal stability up to 623 K, and also displays strong green photoluminescence in the solid state at room temperature.

Two-dimensional dysprosium(III) coordination polymer: Structure, single-molecule magnetic behavior, proton conduction, and luminescence.

Project description:A new dysprosium (III) coordination polymer [Dy(Hm-dobdc) (H2O)2]·H2O (Dy-CP), was hydrothermal synthesized based on 4,6-dioxido-1,3-benzenedicarboxylate (H4m-dobdc) ligand containing carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups. The Dy(III) center adopts an octa-coordinated [DyO8] geometry, which can be described as a twisted square antiprism (D 4d symmetry). Neighboring Dy(III) ions are interconnected by deprotonated Hm-dobdc3- ligand to form the two-dimensional infinite layers, which are further linked to generate three-dimensional structure through abundant hydrogen bonds mediated primarily by coordinated and lattice H2O molecules. Magnetic studies demonstrates that Dy-CP shows the field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization and the energy barrier U eff/k B and relaxation time τ 0 are 35.3 K and 1.31 × 10-6 s, respectively. Following the vehicular mechanism, Dy-CP displays proton conductivity with σ equal to 7.77 × 10-8 S cm-1 at 353 K and 30%RH. Moreover, luminescence spectra reveal that H4m-dobdc can sensitize characteristic luminescence of Dy(III) ion. Herein, good magnetism, proton conduction, and luminescence are simultaneously achieved, and thus, Dy-CP is a potential multifunctional coordination polymer material.

A Dy(III) Coordination Polymer Material as a Dual-Functional Fluorescent Sensor for the Selective Detection of Inorganic Pollutants.

Project description:A Dy(III) coordination polymer (CP), [Dy(spasds)(H2O)2]n (1) (Na2Hspasds = 5-(4-sulfophenylazo)salicylic disodium salt), has been synthesized using a hydrothermal method and characterized. 1 features a 2D layered structure, where the spasda3- anions act as pentadentate ligands, adopting carboxylate, sulfonate and phenolate groups to bridge with four Dy centers in η3-μ1: μ2, η2-μ1: μ1, and monodentate coordination modes, respectively. It possesses a unique (4,4)-connected net with a Schläfli symbol of {44·62}{4}2. The luminescence study revealed that 1 exhibited a broad fluorescent emission band at 392 nm. Moreover, the visual blue color has been confirmed by the CIE plot. 1 can serve as a dual-functional luminescent sensor toward Fe3+ and MnO4- through the luminescence quenching effect, with limits of detection (LODs) of 9.30 × 10-7 and 1.19 × 10-6 M, respectively. The LODs are relatively low in comparison with those of the reported CP-based sensors for Fe3+ and MnO4-. In addition, 1 also has high selectivity and remarkable anti-interference ability, as well as good recyclability for at least five cycles. Furthermore, the potential application of the sensor for the detection of Fe3+ and MnO4- was studied through simulated wastewater samples with different concentrations. The possible sensing mechanisms were investigated using Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results revealed that the luminescence turn-off effects toward Fe3+ and MnO4- were caused by competitive absorption and photoinduced electron transfer (PET), and competitive absorption and inner filter effect (IFE), respectively.

Dual-Ligand Strategy Employing Rigid 2,5-Thiophenedicarboxylate and 1,10-Phenanthroline as Coligands for Solvothermal Synthesis of Eight Lanthanide(III) Coordination Polymers: Structural Diversity, DFT Study, and Exploration of the Luminescent Tb(III) Coordination Polymer as an Efficient Chemical Sensor for Nitroaromatic Compounds.

Project description:Lanthanide coordination polymers (Ln-CPs) are potential chemosensors when fabricated to depict a detectable change in optical properties on interaction with target analytes. This work investigates the interaction of nitroaromatic compounds with Ln-CPs leading to induced changes in fluorescence emission intensity, a crucial strategy to develop a selective and sensitive system for the sensing of nitroaromatics. Approaching toward this objective, solvothermal reactions of 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic (2,5-TDC) acid, 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-Phen), and Ln(NO3)3·xH2O are carried out to assemble eight Ln(III) coordination polymers [Ln2(2,5-TDC)3(1,10-Phen)2(H2O)2] [Ln = Pr (1), Nd (2)], {[Tb(2,5-TDC)1.5(1,10-Phen)(H2O)]·DMF} (3), and [Ln(2,5-TDC)1.5(1,10-Phen)]·xH2O (Ln = Tb (4), Dy (5), Ho (6), Er (7), and Yb (8)); x = 0 for CP 4, 5, 6, and 8 and x = 1 for CP 7 with two different space groups and dimensions. The as-synthesized polymers 1-8 are characterized by powder X-ray crystallography, infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The structure-corroborated density functional theory (DFT) studies are done on the selected CPs to investigate the interactions between different structural motifs of the assembled CPs. The luminescence properties of CP 4 are explored in detail and are found to be highly sensitive for the detection of p-nitrotoluene as indicated by the most intensive fluorescence quenching with the lowest limit of detection (0.88 ppm) and high quenching constant (4.3 × 104 M-1). Other nitro compounds (viz., o-nitrobenzaldehyde, m-nitroaniline, picric acid, m-dinitrobenzene, p-nitrophenol, and p-nitroaniline) are also screened for potential sensing by CP 4.

Micro-supercapacitors based on oriented coordination polymer thin films for AC line-filtering.

Project description:Reported herein is a facile solution-processed substrate-independent approach for preparation of oriented coordination polymer (Co-BTA) thin-film electrodes for on-chip micro-supercapacitors (MSCs). The Co-BTA-MSCs exhibited excellent AC line-filtering performance with an extremely short resistance-capacitance constant, making it capable of replacing aluminum electrolytic capacitors for AC line-filtering applications.

Self-assembly of a terbium(III) 1D coordination polymer on mica.

Project description:The terbium(III) ion is a particularly suitable candidate for the creation of surface-based magnetic and luminescent devices. In the present work, we report the epitaxial growth of needle-like objects composed of [Tb(hfac)3·2H2O] n (where hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) polymeric units on muscovite mica, which is observed by atomic force microscopy. The needle-like shape mimics the structure observed in the crystalline bulk material. The growth of this molecular organization is assisted by water adsorption on the freshly air-cleaved muscovite mica. This deposition technique allows for the observation of a significant amount of nanochains grown along three preferential directions 60° apart from another. The magnetic properties and the luminescence of the nanochains can be detected without the need of surface-dedicated instrumentation. The intermediate value of the observed luminescence lifetime of the deposits (132 µs) compared to that of the bulk (375 µs) and the CHCl3 solution (13 µs) further reinforces the idea of water-induced growth.

Microfluidic preparation of polymer nanospheres.

Project description:In this work, solid polymer nanospheres with their surface tailored for drug adhesion were prepared using a V-shaped microfluidic junction. The biocompatible polymer solutions were infused using two channels of the microfluidic junction which was also simultaneously fed with a volatile liquid, perfluorohexane using the other channel. The mechanism by which the nanospheres are generated is explained using high speed camera imaging. The polymer concentration (5-50 wt%) and flow rates of the feeds (50-300 µl min-1) were important parameters in controlling the nanosphere diameter. The diameter of the polymer nanospheres was found to be in the range of 80-920 nm with a polydispersity index of 11-19 %. The interior structure and surfaces of the nanospheres prepared were studied using advanced microscopy and showed the presence of fine pores and cracks on surface which can be used as drug entrapment locations.

Variable Dimensionality of Europium(III) and Terbium(III) Coordination Compounds with a Flexible Hexacarboxylate Ligand.

Project description:A reaction between 4,4',4″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(oxy))triphthalic acid (H6L) and lanthanide(III) nitrates (Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+) in water under the same conditions gave a molecular coordination compound [Tb(H4.5L)2(H2O)5]∙6H2O in the case of terbium(III) and a one-dimensional linear coordination polymer {[Eu2(H3L)2(H2O)6]∙8H2O}n in the case of europium(III). The crystal structures of both compounds were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and they were further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The compounds demonstrated characteristic lanthanide-centered photoluminescence. The lanthanide-dependent dimensionality of the synthesized compounds, which are the first examples of the coordination compounds of hexacarboxylic acid H6L demonstrates its potential as a linker for new coordination polymers.

Versatile Photo/Electricity Responsive Properties of a Coordination Polymer Based on Extended Viologen Ligands.

Project description:Responsive chromogenic materials have attracted increasing interest among researchers; however, up until now, few materials have exhibited multifunctional chromogenic properties. The coordination polymers (CPs) provide intriguing platforms to design and construct multifunctional materials. Here, a multifunctional photo/electricity responsive CP named Zn-Oxv, which is based on the "extended viologen" (ExV) ligand, was synthesized. The Zn-Oxv exhibited reversible photochromism, photomodulated fluorescence, electrochromism and electrofluorochromism. Furthermore, we prepared Zn-Oxv thin films and investigated electrochromic (EC) properties of viologen-based CPs for the first time. Zn-Oxv thin films showed excellent EC performance with a rapid switching speed (both coloring and bleaching time within 1 s), high coloration efficiency (102.9 cm2/C) and transmittance change (exceeding 40%). Notably, the Zn-Oxv is by far the fastest CP EC material based on redox-active ligands ever reported, indicating that the viologen-based CPs could open up a new field of materials for EC applications. Therefore, viologen-based CPs are attractive candidates for the design of novel multi-responsive chromogenic materials and EC materials that could promise creative applications in intelligent technology, dynamic displays and smart sensors.

Project description:Tetra-yttrium(III) tris-ulfide disilicate, Y(4)S(3)(Si(2)O(7)), crystallizes in the Sm(4)S(3)(Si(2)O(7)) structure type. The structure consists of isolated (Si(2)O(7))(6-) units (2mm. symmetry) and two crystallo-graphically independent Y(3+) cations bridged by one S and one O atom. The first Y atom (site symmetry .m.) is coordinated by three O atoms and three S atoms in a trigonal-prismatic arrangement whereas the second Y atom (site symmetry ..2) is coordinated by six O atoms and three S atoms in a tricapped trigonal-prismatic arrangement.
