Reversible electrodeposition and stripping of magnesium from solvate ionic liquid-tetrabutylammonium chloride mixtures.

ABSTRACT: The physicochemical properties of three new magnesium-containing solvate ionic liquids are reported. The solvation structures were analysed by Raman spectroscopy, revealing a solvent separated ion pair structure at room temperature. The reversible electrodeposition and stripping of magnesium from mixtures of these solvate ionic liquids and tetra-n-butylammonium chloride is described. The electrolytes are significantly less volatile than similar dilute electrolytes, even at elevated temperatures and the deposition current densities exceed 1 A dm^-2 at 80 °C. The influence of the chloride concentration on magnesium deposition was studied with cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. It was found that the stripping of magnesium is governed by two competing reactions, and the addition of tetrabutylammonium chloride to the solvate ionic liquids was necessary to prevent passivation and efficiently strip the deposited magnesium.

Electrodeposition of indium from the ionic liquid trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride.

Project description:The electrochemical behavior of indium in the ionic liquid trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride (Cyphos IL 101) was studied. Cyphos IL 101 first had to be purified, as the impurities present in commercial Cyphos IL 101 interfered with the electrochemical measurements. Electrochemical deposition of indium metal from this electrolyte occurs without hydrogen evolution, increasing the cathodic current efficiency compared to deposition from water and avoiding porosity within the deposited metal. Indium(iii) is the most stable oxidation state in the ionic liquid. This ion is reduced in two steps, first from indium(iii) to indium(i) and subsequently to indium(0). The high thermal stability of Cyphos IL 101 allowed the electrodeposition of indium at 120 °C and 180 °C. At 180 °C indium was deposited as liquid indium which allows for the easy separation of the indium and the possibility to design a continuous electrowinning process. On molybdenum, indium deposits as liquid droplets even below the melting point of indium. This was explained by the combination of melting point depression and undercooling. The possibility to separate indium from iron and zinc by electrodeposition was tested. It is possible to separate indium from zinc by electrodeposition, but iron deposits together with indium.

Triphilic Ionic-Liquid Mixtures: Fluorinated and Non-fluorinated Aprotic Ionic-Liquid Mixtures.

Project description:We present here the possibility of forming triphilic mixtures from alkyl- and fluoroalkylimidazolium ionic liquids, thus, macroscopically homogeneous mixtures for which instead of the often observed two domains-polar and nonpolar-three stable microphases are present: polar, lipophilic, and fluorous ones. The fluorinated side chains of the cations indeed self-associate and form domains that are segregated from those of the polar and alkyl domains. To enable miscibility, despite the generally preferred macroscopic separation between fluorous and alkyl moieties, the importance of strong hydrogen bonding is shown. As the long-range structure in the alkyl and fluoroalkyl domains is dependent on the composition of the liquid, we propose that the heterogeneous, triphilic structure can be easily tuned by the molar ratio of the components. We believe that further development may allow the design of switchable, smart liquids that change their properties in a predictable way according to their composition or even their environment.

Imidazolium Chloride Ionic Liquid Mixtures as Separating Agents: Fuel Processing and Azeotrope Breaking.

Project description:Relevant chemical separations for the petrochemical and chemical industries include the removal of aromatic hydrocarbons from aliphatics, the desulfurization and denitrification of fuels, and the separation of azeotropic mixtures containing alkanols. In an attempt to contribute to the development of novel technologies, the potentialities of imidazolium chloride ionic liquid (IL) mixtures as separation agents were investigated. Selectivities, capacities, and solvent performance indices were calculated through the activity coefficients at infinite dilution of organic solutes and water in the imidazolium chloride IL: [C8mim]Cl, [C12mim]Cl, and the equimolar mixture of [C4mim]Cl and [C12mim]Cl. Results show that the imidazolium chloride IL might be appropriately tailored for specific purposes, in which an increase in the proportion of cations containing larger alkyl chains tends to increase the overall affinity with organic solutes. The IL designer solvent concept was explored by comparing the IL equimolar mixture results with the intermediary [C8mim]Cl. The COSMO-RS thermodynamic model was also applied, showing it to be a promising tool for a fast qualitative screening of potential separation agents for specific separation processes.

Reversible and non-reactive cellulose separations from ionic liquid mixtures with compressed carbon dioxide.

Project description:A novel physical (non-reactive) separation of cellulose from an ionic liquid (IL)/cosolvent mixture by compressed carbon dioxide is presented. The precipitation is completely reversible and rapid within small changes of pressure i.e. liquid phase CO2 composition. High pressure phase equilibrium, high pressure NMR, and solid state NMR have been utilized to understand the separation phenomena.

A physicochemical investigation of ionic liquid mixtures.

Project description:Ionic liquids have earned the reputation of being 'designer solvents' due to the wide range of accessible properties and the degree of fine-tuning afforded by varying the constituent ions. Mixtures of ionic liquids offer the opportunity for further fine-tuning of properties. A broad selection of common ionic liquid cations and anions are employed to create a sample of binary and reciprocal binary ionic liquid mixtures, which are analysed and described in this paper. Physical properties such as the conductivity, viscosity, density and phase behaviour (glass transition temperatures) are examined. In addition, thermal stabilities of the mixtures are evaluated. The physical properties examined for these formulations are found to generally adhere remarkably closely to ideal mixing laws, with a few consistent exceptions, allowing for the facile prediction and control of properties of ionic liquid mixtures.

Anions as Dynamic Probes for Ionic Liquid Mixtures.

Project description:Ionic liquid (IL) mixtures have been proposed as a viable alternative to rationally fine-tune the physicochemical properties of ILs for a variety of applications. The understanding of the effects of mixing ILs on the properties of the mixtures is however only in the very early stages. Two series of ionic liquid mixtures, based on the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium cations, and having a common anion (tetrafluoroborate or bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide), have been prepared and deeply characterized via multiple NMR techniques. Diffusion and relaxation methods combined with 2D ion-ion correlation (nuclear Overhauser enhancement) experiments have been used for a better understanding of the interplay between dynamics and structure of IL mixtures. A crucial role of the anion in driving the mixture's behavior emerged, making them important "dynamic probes" for gaining information of the polar and nonpolar regions of ionic liquids and their mixtures.

Aluminium Electrodeposition from Ionic Liquid: Effect of Deposition Temperature and Sonication †.

Project description:Since their discovery, ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted a wide interest for their potential use as a medium for many chemical processes, in particular electrochemistry. As electrochemical media they allow the electrodeposition of elements that are impossible to reduce in aqueous media. We have investigated the electrodeposition of aluminium from 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ((Bmim)Cl)/AlCl₃ (40/60 mol %) as concerns the effect of deposition parameters on the quality of the deposits. Thick (20 μm) aluminium coatings were electrodeposited on brass substrates at different temperatures and mixing conditions (mechanical stirring and sonication). These coatings were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope, roughness measurements, and X-ray diffraction to assess the morphology and the phase composition. Finally, electrochemical corrosion tests were carried out with the intent to correlate the deposition parameters to the anti-corrosion properties.

The Influence of Interfacial Chemistry on Magnesium Electrodeposition in Non-nucleophilic Electrolytes Using Sulfone-Ether Mixtures.

Project description:One of the limiting factors in the development of magnesium batteries is the reversibility of magnesium electrodeposition and dissolution at the anode. Often irreversibility is related to impurities and decomposition. Herein we report on the cycling behavior of magnesium metal anodes in different electrolytes, Mg(HMDS)2 - 4 MgCl2 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and a butyl sulfone/THF mixture. The deposition morphology and anode-electrolyte interface is studied and related to Mg/Mg cell cycling performance. It is found that adding the sulfone caused the formation of a boundary layer at the electrode-electrolyte interface, which, in turn, resulted in a particle-like deposition morphology. This type of deposition has a high surface area, which alters the effective local current density and results in electronically isolated deposits. Extended cycling resulted in magnesium growth through a separator. Electrolyte decomposition is observed with and without the addition of the sulfone, however the addition of the sulfone increased the degree of decomposition.

Solid-liquid equilibria of binary mixtures of fluorinated ionic liquids.

Project description:Within ionic liquids, fluorinated ionic liquids (FILs) present unique physico-chemical properties and potential applications in several fields. However, the melting point of these neoteric compounds is usually higher due to the presence of fluorine atoms. This drawback may be resolved by, for instance, mixing different FILs to create eutectic mixtures. In this work, binary mixtures of fluoro-containing and fluorinated ionic liquids were considered with the aim of decreasing their melting temperatures as well as understanding and characterizing these mixtures and their phase transitions. Five FILs were selected, allowing the investigation of four binary mixtures, each of them with a common ion. Their solid-liquid and solid-solid equilibria were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and the non-ideality of the mixtures was investigated. Overall, a variety of solid-liquid equilibria with systems exhibiting eutectic behavior, polymorphs with solid-solid phase transitions, and the formation of intermediate compounds and solid solutions were surprisingly found. In addition to these intriguing behaviours, novel FILs with lower melting temperatures were obtained by the formation of binary systems, thus enlarging the application range of FILs at lower temperatures.

Aqueous Ionic Liquid Mixtures as Minimal Models of Lipid Bilayer Membranes.

Project description:We introduce aqueous ionic liquid (IL) mixtures, specifically mixtures of 1-butyl-3-imidazoliumtetrafluoroborate (BMImBF4), with water as a minimal model of lipid bilayer membranes. Imidazolium-based ILs are known to form clustered nanoscale structures in which local inhomogeneities, micellar or lamellar structures, are formed to shield hydrophobic parts of the cation from the polar cosolvent (water). To investigate these nanostructures, dynamic light scattering (DLS) on samples with different mixing ratios of water and BMImBF4 was performed. At mixing ratios of 50% and 45% (v/v), small and homogeneous nanostructures can indeed be detected. To test whether, in particular, these stable nanostructures in aqueous mixtures may mimic the effects of phospholipid bilayer membranes, we further investigated their interaction with myelin basic protein (MBP), a peripheral, intrinsically disordered membrane protein of the myelin sheath. Using dynamic light scattering (DLS), continuous wave (CW) and pulse electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) on recombinantly produced, "healthy" charge variants rmC1WT and double cysteine variant C1S17CH85C, we find that the size and the shape of the determined nanostructures in an optimum mixture offer model membranes in which the protein exhibits native behavior. SAXS measurements illuminate the size and shape of the nanostructures and indicate IL-rich "beads" clipped together by functional MBP, one of the in vivo roles of the protein in the myelin sheath. All the gathered data combined indicate that the 50% and 45% aqueous IL mixtures can be described as offering minimal models of a lipid mono- or bilayer that allow native processing and potential study of at least peripheral membrane proteins like MBP.
