Synthesis and charge transfer characteristics of a ruthenium-acetylide complex.

ABSTRACT: A novel ruthenium-acetylide complex was synthesised and characterised in solid state and solution. Thin films of the complex were evaporated on silver and gold foils in ultra high vacuum in order to probe the electronic properties with photoemission spectroscopy. The charge transfer characteristics of the complex with the strong acceptor F₆TCNNQ were investigated by UV-vis absorption in solution as well as at an interface with photoemission spectroscopy. A new excitation in the former optical gap of the pristine materials was probed in solution. Moreover, it was possible to identify the oxidised complex as well as the reduced acceptor by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. In particular, our data reveal that oxidation of the complex mainly occurs at the Ru centre. The charge transfer can be characterised as localised and mainly ionic although signs of a reaction of the acceptors aminogroups with the ruthenium-acetylide complex were found.

Investigation of Vibrational Cooling in a Photoexcited Dichloro-Ruthenium Charge Transfer Complex Using Transient Electronic Absorption Spectroscopy.

Project description:Vibrational cooling of molecules in excited electronic states is ubiquitous in photochemical reactions in solution but challenging to infer in time-resolved electronic absorption experiments. We report the ultrafast photophysics of cis-dichlorobis(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II), Ru(bpy)2Cl2, a precursor molecule commonly utilized in synthetic modifications of a vast array of ruthenium complexes. Femtosecond time-resolved electronic absorption spectroscopy is used to track an ultrafast spectral narrowing of the excited-state absorptions at 475 nm (21,050 cm-1) and 505 nm (19,800 cm-1) due to the reduced ligand in the photoexcited molecular complex. These sharp features, which overlap with a broader ground-state bleach spanning 450 nm (22,220 cm-1) to 600 nm (16,670 cm-1), evolve rapidly with time constants of 16 ± 5, 15 ± 3, and 18 ± 2 ps, respectively, for ligand-centered (π → π*, 266 nm) and charge-transfer (t2 → π*, 400 and 550 nm) excitations and constitute a direct signature of picosecond vibrational cooling.

Quantum ferroelectricity in charge-transfer complex crystals.

Project description:Quantum phase transition achieved by fine tuning the continuous phase transition down to zero kelvin is a challenge for solid state science. Critical phenomena distinct from the effects of thermal fluctuations can materialize when the electronic, structural or magnetic long-range order is perturbed by quantum fluctuations between degenerate ground states. Here we have developed chemically pure tetrahalo-p-benzoquinones of n iodine and 4-n bromine substituents (QBr4-nIn, n=0-4) to search for ferroelectric charge-transfer complexes with tetrathiafulvalene (TTF). Among them, TTF-QBr2I2 exhibits a ferroelectric neutral-ionic phase transition, which is continuously controlled over a wide temperature range from near-zero kelvin to room temperature under hydrostatic pressure. Quantum critical behaviour is accompanied by a much larger permittivity than those of other neutral-ionic transition compounds, such as well-known ferroelectric complex of TTF-QCl4 and quantum antiferroelectric of dimethyl-TTF-QBr4. By contrast, TTF-QBr3I complex, another member of this compound family, shows complete suppression of the ferroelectric spin-Peierls-type phase transition.

Direct Observation of Photoinduced Charge Separation in Ruthenium Complex/Ni(OH)2 Nanoparticle Hybrid.

Project description:Ni(OH)2 have emerged as important functional materials for solar fuel conversion because of their potential as cost-effective bifunctional catalysts for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. However, their roles as photocatalysts in the photoinduced charge separation (CS) reactions remain unexplored. In this paper, we investigate the CS dynamics of a newly designed hybrid catalyst by integrating a Ru complex with Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles (NPs). Using time resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XTA), we directly observed the formation of the reduced Ni metal site (~60 ps), unambiguously demonstrating CS process in the hybrid through ultrafast electron transfer from Ru complex to Ni(OH)2 NPs. Compared to the ultrafast CS process, the charge recombination in the hybrid is ultraslow (≫50 ns). These results not only suggest the possibility of developing Ni(OH)2 as solar fuel catalysts, but also represent the first time direct observation of efficient CS in a hybrid catalyst using XTA.

Nitrile Oxidation at a Ruthenium Complex leading to Intermolecular Imido Group Transfer.

Project description:The oxidation of an acetonitrile ligand coordinated to ruthenium is explored in deuterated dimethylsulfoxide by 1H NMR spectroscopy. When oxidized with an iodosoarene oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reagent, kinetic studies demonstrate that the nitrile ligand does not dissociate before reacting. Instead, OAT to the central nitrile carbon is implicated (nitrile oxidation), and is further supported by the product of the reaction, N-acyl-dimethylsulfoximine. The N-acyl-dimethylsulfoximine likely formed by an imido group transfer reaction from ruthenium to the NMR solvent, and the product was synthesized independently to verify its identity in the reaction. This reaction represents the first time that a nitrile oxidation reaction has resulted in intermolecular imido group transfer to a substrate, presumably through a reactive ruthenium(IV)imido intermediate. This suggests that nitrile oxidation is a plausible route into reactive metal-imido intermediates for amination and aziridination reactions.

Synthesis and Applications of (ONO Pincer)Ruthenium-Complex-Bound Norvalines.

Project description:Two (ONO pincer)ruthenium-complex-bound norvalines, Boc-[Ru(pydc)(terpy)]Nva-OMe (1; Boc=tert-butyloxycarbonyl, terpy=terpyridyl, Nva=norvaline) and Boc-[Ru(pydc)(tBu-terpy)]Nva-OMe (5), were successfully synthesized and their molecular structures and absolute configurations were unequivocally determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The robustness of the pincer Ru complexes and norvaline scaffolds against acidic/basic, oxidizing, and high-temperature conditions enabled us to perform selective transformations of the N-Boc and C-OMe termini into various functional groups, such as alkyl amide, alkyl urea, and polyether groups, without the loss of the Ru center or enantiomeric purity. The resulting dialkylated Ru-bound norvaline, n-C11 H23 CO-l-[Ru(pydc)(terpy)]Nva-NH-n-C11 H23 (l-4) was found to have excellent self-assembly properties in organic solvents, thereby affording the corresponding supramolecular gels. Ru-bound norvaline l-1 exhibited a higher catalytic activity for the oxidation of alcohols by H2 O2 than parent complex [Ru(pydc)(terpy)] (11 a).

Quaternary Charge-Transfer Complex Enables Photoenzymatic Intermolecular Hydroalkylation of Olefins.

Project description:Intermolecular C-C bond-forming reactions are underdeveloped transformations in the field of biocatalysis. Here we report a photoenzymatic intermolecular hydroalkylation of olefins catalyzed by flavin-dependent 'ene'-reductases. Radical initiation occurs via photoexcitation of a rare high-order enzyme-templated charge-transfer complex that forms between an alkene, α-chloroamide, and flavin hydroquinone. This unique mechanism ensures that radical formation only occurs when both substrates are present within the protein active site. This active site can control the radical terminating hydrogen atom transfer, enabling the synthesis of enantioenriched γ-stereogenic amides. This work highlights the potential for photoenzymatic catalysis to enable new biocatalytic transformations via previously unknown electron transfer mechanisms.

Shift current photovoltaic effect in a ferroelectric charge-transfer complex.

Project description:Shift current is a steady-state photocurrent generated in non-centrosymmetric single crystals and has been considered to be one of the major origins of the bulk photovoltaic effect. The mechanism of this effect is the transfer of photogenerated charges by the shift of the wave functions, and its amplitude is closely related to the polarization of the electronic origin. Here, we report the photovoltaic effect in an organic molecular crystal tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil with a large ferroelectric polarization mostly induced by the intermolecular charge transfer. We observe a fairly large zero-bias photocurrent with visible-light irradiation and switching of the current direction by the reversal of the polarization. Furthermore, we reveal that the travel distance of photocarriers exceeds 200 μm. These results unveil distinct features of the shift current and the potential application of ferroelectric organic molecular compounds for novel optoelectric devices.The bulk photovoltaics refers to an effect whereby electrons move directionally in non-centrosymmetric crystals upon light radiation. Here, Nakamura et al. observe this effect in a ferroelectric organic charge-transfer complex, which shows large diffusion distance of photogenerated electrons over 200 µm.

Intervalence Charge Transfer in an Osmium(IV) Tetra(ferrocenylaryl) Complex.

Project description:The functional properties of tetraaryl compounds, M(aryl)4 (M = transition metal or group 14 element), are dictated not only by their common tetrahedral geometry but also by their central atom. The identity of this atom may serve to modulate the reactivity, electrochemical, magnetic, and optical behavior of the molecular species, or of extended materials built from appropriate tetraaryl building blocks, but this has not yet been systematically evaluated. Toward this goal, here we probe the influence of Os(IV), C, and Si central atoms on the spectroelectrochemical properties of a series of redox-active tetra(ferrocenylaryl) complexes. We prepare these compounds through Negishi cross-coupling from brominated precursors and confirm, through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, they exhibit comparable molecular structures with only small differences attributable to their dissimilar M-aryl bond lengths. Solution voltammetric and spectroelectrochemical studies reveal that access to mixed-valence states is uniquely provided by the Os(IV) species, which also exhibits a near-IR absorption band that is characteristic of intervalence charge transfer processes. Together, this work serves to highlight the remarkable electrochemical stability and distinct electronic properties of the Os(aryl)4 unit, as well as the potential utility of these and other M(aryl)4 species as modular building blocks for three-dimensional polymers or functional molecular devices.

Electronic Characterization of a Charge-Transfer Complex Monolayer on Graphene.

Project description:Organic charge-transfer complexes (CTCs) formed by strong electron acceptor and strong electron donor molecules are known to exhibit exotic effects such as superconductivity and charge density waves. We present a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (LT-STM/STS) study of a two-dimensional (2D) monolayer CTC of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and fluorinated tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ), self-assembled on the surface of oxygen-intercalated epitaxial graphene on Ir(111) (G/O/Ir(111)). We confirm the formation of the charge-transfer complex by dI/dV spectroscopy and direct imaging of the singly occupied molecular orbitals. High-resolution spectroscopy reveals a gap at zero bias, suggesting the formation of a correlated ground state at low temperatures. These results point to the possibility to realize and study correlated ground states in charge-transfer complex monolayers on weakly interacting surfaces.

Pulse-Induced Dynamics of a Charge-Transfer Complex from First Principles.

Project description:The ultrafast dynamics of charge carriers in organic donor-acceptor interfaces are of primary importance to understanding the fundamental properties of these systems. In this work, we focus on a charge-transfer complex formed by quaterthiophene p-doped by tetrafluoro-tetracyanoquinodimethane and investigate electron dynamics and vibronic interactions also at finite temperatures by applying a femtosecond pulse in resonance with the two lowest energy excitations of the system with perpendicular and parallel polarization with respect to the interface. The adopted ab initio formalism based on real-time time-dependent density-functional theory coupled to Ehrenfest dynamics enables monitoring the dynamical charge transfer across the interface and assessing the role played by the nuclear motion. Our results show that the strong intermolecular interactions binding the complex already in the ground state influence the dynamics, too. The analysis of the nuclear motion involved in these processes reveals the participation of different vibrational modes depending on the electronic states stimulated by the resonant pulse. Coupled donor-acceptor modes mostly influence the excited state polarized across the interface, while intramolecular vibrations in the donor molecule dominate the excitation in the orthogonal direction. The results obtained at finite temperatures are overall consistent with this picture, although thermal disorder contributes to slightly decreasing interfacial charge transfer.
