PARS, low-cost portable rehabilitation system for upper arm.

ABSTRACT: This study introduces a compact low-cost single degree of freedom end-effector type upper arm rehabilitation system (PARS) along with its hardware and software elements. Proposed system is also suitable to be used in conjunction with a gaming environment. Throughout the study structural setup of the system was explained in detail along with its electronics, control system and gaming software. Introduced virtual gaming interface supports various game levels with different difficulties generated via interaction type control algorithms. Having simple structural design constructed by using basic available components, proposed system can be easily manufactured and utilized in physical rehabilitation procedures by using supplied open source codes. Introduced systems compactness and user friendly interface also allow its usage for individual home therapies for remote rehabilitation treatment procedures.

A low cost virtual reality system for home based rehabilitation of the arm following stroke: a randomised controlled feasibility trial.

Project description:ObjectiveTo assess the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial of a home-based virtual reality system for rehabilitation of the arm following stroke.DesignTwo group feasibility randomised controlled trial of intervention versus usual care.SettingPatients' homes.ParticipantsPatients aged 18 or over, with residual arm dysfunction following stroke and no longer receiving any other intensive rehabilitation.InterventionsEight weeks' use of a low cost home-based virtual reality system employing infra-red capture to translate the position of the hand into game play or usual care.Main measuresThe primary objective was to collect information on the feasibility of a trial, including recruitment, collection of outcome measures and staff support required. Patients were assessed at three time points using the Wolf Motor Function Test, Nine-Hole Peg Test, Motor Activity Log and Nottingham Extended Activities of Daily Living.ResultsOver 15 months only 47 people were referred to the team. Twenty seven were randomised and 18 (67%) of those completed final outcome measures. Sample size calculation based on data from the Wolf Motor Function Test indicated a requirement for 38 per group. There was a significantly greater change from baseline in the intervention group on midpoint Wolf Grip strength and two subscales of the final Motor Activity Log. Training in the use of the equipment took a median of 230 minutes per patient.ConclusionsTo achieve the required sample size, a definitive home-based trial would require additional strategies to boost recruitment rates and adequate resources for patient support.

Capturing Upper Body Kinematics and Localization with Low-Cost Sensors for Rehabilitation Applications.

Project description:For upper extremity rehabilitation, quantitative measurements of a person's capabilities during activities of daily living could provide useful information for therapists, including in telemedicine scenarios. Specifically, measurements of a person's upper body kinematics could give information about which arm motions or movement features are in need of additional therapy, and their location within the home could give context to these motions. To that end, we present a new algorithm for identifying a person's location in a region of interest based on a Bluetooth received signal strength (RSS) and present an experimental evaluation of this and a different Bluetooth RSS-based localization algorithm via fingerprinting. We further present algorithms for and experimental results of inferring the complete upper body kinematics based on three standalone inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors mounted on the wrists and pelvis. Our experimental results for localization find the target location with a mean square error of 1.78 m. Our kinematics reconstruction algorithms gave lower errors with the pelvis sensor mounted on the person's back and with individual calibrations for each test. With three standalone IMUs, the mean angular error for all of the upper body segment orientations was close to 21 degrees, and the estimated elbow and shoulder angles had mean errors of less than 4 degrees.

Seq-Well: A portable, low-cost platform for single-cell RNA-seq of low-input samples

Project description:Single-cell RNA -seq can precisely resolve cellular states, but applying this method to low-input samples is challenging. Here, we present Seq-Well, a portable, low-cost platform for massively parallel single-cell RNA -seq. Barcoded mRNA capture beads and single cells are sealed in an array of subnanoliter wells using a semipermeable membrane, enabling efficient cell lysis and transcript capture. We characterize Seq-Well extensively and use it to profile thousands of primary human macrophages exposed to tuberculosis.

Development and On-Field Testing of Low-Cost Portable System for Monitoring PM2.5 Concentrations.

Project description:Recent developments in the field of low-cost sensors enable the design and implementation of compact, inexpensive and portable sensing units for air pollution monitoring with fine-detailed spatial and temporal resolution, in order to support applications of wider interest in the area of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). In this context, the present work advances the concept of developing a low-cost portable air pollution monitoring system (APMS) for measuring the concentrations of particulate matter (PM), in particular fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5). Specifically, this paper presents the on-field testing of the proposed low-cost APMS implementation using roadside measurements from a mobile laboratory equipped with a calibrated instrument as the basis of comparison and showcases its accuracy on characterizing the PM2.5 concentrations on 1 min resolution in an on-road trial. Moreover, it demonstrates the intended application of collecting fine-grained spatio-temporal PM2.5 profiles by mounting the developed APMS on an electric bike as a case study in the city of Mons, Belgium.

Choosing MUSE: Validation of a Low-Cost, Portable EEG System for ERP Research.

Project description:In recent years there has been an increase in the number of portable low-cost electroencephalographic (EEG) systems available to researchers. However, to date the validation of the use of low-cost EEG systems has focused on continuous recording of EEG data and/or the replication of large system EEG setups reliant on event-markers to afford examination of event-related brain potentials (ERP). Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to conduct ERP research without being reliant on event markers using a portable MUSE EEG system and a single computer. Specifically, we report the results of two experiments using data collected with the MUSE EEG system-one using the well-known visual oddball paradigm and the other using a standard reward-learning task. Our results demonstrate that we could observe and quantify the N200 and P300 ERP components in the visual oddball task and the reward positivity (the mirror opposite component to the feedback-related negativity) in the reward-learning task. Specifically, single sample t-tests of component existence (all p's < 0.05), computation of Bayesian credible intervals, and 95% confidence intervals all statistically verified the existence of the N200, P300, and reward positivity in all analyses. We provide with this research paper an open source website with all the instructions, methods, and software to replicate our findings and to provide researchers with an easy way to use the MUSE EEG system for ERP research. Importantly, our work highlights that with a single computer and a portable EEG system such as the MUSE one can conduct ERP research with ease thus greatly extending the possible use of the ERP methodology to a variety of novel contexts.

Design and control of a low-cost non-backdrivable end-effector upper limb rehabilitation device.

Project description:This paper presents GARD, an upper limb end-effector rehabilitation device developed for stroke patients. GARD offers assistance force along or towards a 2D trajectory during physical therapy sessions. GARD employs a non-backdrivable mechanism with novel motor velocity-control-based algorithms, which offers superior control precision and stability. To our knowledge, this innovative technical route has not been previously explored in rehabilitation robotics. In alignment with the new design, GARD features two novel control algorithms: Implicit Euler Velocity Control (IEVC) algorithm and a generalized impedance control algorithm. These algorithms achieve O(n) runtime complexity for any arbitrary trajectory. The system has demonstrated a mean absolute error of 0.023 mm in trajectory-following tasks and 0.14 mm in trajectory-restricted free moving tasks. The proposed upper limb rehabilitation device offers all the functionalities of existing commercial devices with superior performance. Additionally, GARD provides unique functionalities such as area-restricted free moving and dynamic Motion Restriction Map interaction. This device holds strong potential for widespread clinical use, potentially improving rehabilitation outcomes for stroke patients.

Low-Cost Robotic Guide Based on a Motor Imagery Brain-Computer Interface for Arm Assisted Rehabilitation.

Project description:Motor imagery has been suggested as an efficient alternative to improve the rehabilitation process of affected limbs. In this study, a low-cost robotic guide is implemented so that linear position can be controlled via the user's motor imagination of movement intention. The patient can use this device to move the arm attached to the guide according to their own intentions. The first objective of this study was to check the feasibility and safety of the designed robotic guide controlled via a motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) in healthy individuals, with the ultimate aim to apply it to rehabilitation patients. The second objective was to determine which are the most convenient MI strategies to control the different assisted rehabilitation arm movements. The results of this study show a better performance when the BCI task is controlled with an action-action MI strategy versus an action-relaxation one. No statistically significant difference was found between the two action-action MI strategies.

A low cost kinect-based virtual rehabilitation system for inpatient rehabilitation of the upper limb in patients with subacute stroke: A randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled pilot trial.

Project description:BackgroundWe designed this study to prove the efficacy of the low-cost Kinect-based virtual rehabilitation (VR) system for upper limb recovery among patients with subacute stroke.MethodsA double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial was performed. A total of 23 subjects with subacute stroke (<3 months) were allocated to sham (n = 11) and real VR group (n = 12). Both groups participated in a daily 30-minute occupational therapy for upper limb recovery for 10 consecutive weekdays. Subjects received an additional daily 30-minute Kinect-based or sham VR. Assessment was performed before the VR, immediately and 1 month after the last session of VR. Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) (primary outcome) and other secondary functional outcomes were measured. Accelerometers were used to measure hemiparetic upper limb movements during the therapy.ResultsFMA immediately after last VR session was not different between the sham (46.8 ± 16.0) and the real VR group (49.4 ± 14.2) (P = .937 in intention to treat analysis). Significant differences of total activity counts (TAC) were found in hemiparetic upper limb during the therapy between groups (F2,26 = 4.43; P = .22). Real VR group (107,926 ± 68,874) showed significantly more TACs compared with the sham VR group (46,686 ± 25,814) but there was no statistical significance between real VR and control (64,575 ± 27,533).ConclusionLow-cost Kinect-based upper limb rehabilitation system was not more efficacious compared with sham VR. However, the compliance in VR was good and VR system induced more arm motion than control and similar activity compared with the conventional therapy, which suggests its utility as an adjuvant additional therapy during inpatient stroke rehabilitation.

Low cost, portable, 3D printable tissue precision slicer.

Project description:Slicing tissue samples into thin pieces is commonly used in histology analysis and more recently for organotypic culture when tissue samples are sliced alive. Currently available devices for slicing tissue samples are either designed for fixed tissue samples at low cryogenic temperatures (e.g., Cryostats), or bulky and expensive (e.g., vibratome), preventing them from routine lab usage. Here we report a cost-effective device designed to section live tissues for subsequent culture. This device consists of components crafted from 3D-printed Nylon-12- a material suitable for autoclaving to ensure sterility. Its small footprint enhances portability, allowing for convenient placement within a biosafety cabinet for an added layer of sterility assurance. Using human pluripotent stem cells derived brain organoids as an example, we demonstrated that the device both precisely and accurately makes slices. We further validate its suitability for long-term culture by extended tissue culture following slicing. Our results indicate that brain organoid slices are viable and show improved proliferation rate compared with unsliced organoids.

A low-cost, portable, two-dimensional bioimpedance distribution estimation system based on the AD5933 impedance converter.

Project description:This study proposes a low-cost, portable, eight-channel electrical impedance tomograph based on the AD5933 impedance converter. The patterns for current injection and voltage measurement are managed by an Arduino Mega 2560 board and four 74HC4067 Texas Instruments multiplexers. Regarding the experimental results, the errors in the impedance estimates of an electrical circuit that represents a Cole model were less than 1.14% for the magnitude and 4.15% for the phase. Furthermore, the signal-to-noise ratio measured in a resistive phantom was 55.23 dB. Additional experiments consisted of placing five spheres of different size and conductivity in a saline tank, measuring their impedance through eight electrodes, and then generating impedance maps using the Electrical Impedance Tomography and Diffuse Optical Tomography Reconstruction Software (EIDORS). These maps were different for each sphere, suggesting the proposed prototype as a promising alternative for medical applications.
