Uniform nanoporous graphene sponge from natural polysaccharides as a metal-free electrocatalyst for hydrogen generation.

ABSTRACT: Structuring of graphene as graphene sponges in the submicrometric scale has been achieved by using silica spheres (80 nm diameter) as hard templates and chitosan or alginate as precursor of defective N-doped or undoped graphene, respectively. The resulting defective N-doped graphene sponge exhibits a remarkable activity and stability for hydrogen evolution reaction with onset at 203 mV for a current density of 0.5 mA cm^-2 with a small Tafel plot slope of 69.7 mV dec^-1. In addition, the graphene sponge also exhibits a high double layer capacitance of 11.65 mF cm^-2. Comparison with an analogous N-doped graphene sample shows that this electrochemical properties derive from the spatial structuring and large surface area.

Micelle-template synthesis of nitrogen-doped mesoporous graphene as an efficient metal-free electrocatalyst for hydrogen production.

Project description:Synthesis of mesoporous graphene materials by soft-template methods remains a great challenge, owing to the poor self-assembly capability of precursors and the severe agglomeration of graphene nanosheets. Herein, a micelle-template strategy to prepare porous graphene materials with controllable mesopores, high specific surface areas and large pore volumes is reported. By fine-tuning the synthesis parameters, the pore sizes of mesoporous graphene can be rationally controlled. Nitrogen heteroatom doping is found to remarkably render electrocatalytic properties towards hydrogen evolution reactions as a highly efficient metal-free catalyst. The synthesis strategy and the demonstration of highly efficient catalytic effect provide benchmarks for preparing well-defined mesoporous graphene materials for energy production applications.

Electrochemically Synthesized Nanoporous Molybdenum Carbide as a Durable Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Demands for sustainable production of hydrogen are rapidly increasing because of environmental considerations for fossil fuel consumption and development of fuel cell technologies. Thus, the development of high-performance and economical catalysts has been extensively investigated. In this study, a nanoporous Mo carbide electrode is prepared using a top-down electrochemical process and it is applied as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Anodic oxidation of Mo foil followed by heat treatment in a carbon monoxide (CO) atmosphere forms a nanostructured Mo carbide with excellent interconnections, and these structural characteristics lead to high activity and durability when applied to the HER. Additionally, characteristic behavior of Mo is observed; metallic Mo nanosheets form during electrochemical anodization by exfoliation along the (110) planes. These nanosheets are viable for chemical modification, indicating their feasibility in various applications. Moreover, the role of carbon shells is investigated on the surface of the electrocatalysts, whereby it is suggested that carbon shells serve as a mechanical barrier against the oxidative degradation of catalysts that accompanies unavoidable volume expansion.

Graphene Quantum Dot-Mediated Atom-Layer Semiconductor Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:The hydrogen evolution reaction performance of semiconducting 2H-phase molybdenum disulfide (2H-MoS2) presents a significant hurdle in realizing its full potential applications. Here, we utilize theoretical calculations to predict possible functionalized graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which can enhance HER activity of bulk MoS2. Subsequently, we design a functionalized GQD-induced in-situ bottom-up strategy to fabricate near atom-layer 2H-MoS2 nanosheets mediated with GQDs (ALQD) by modulating the concentration of electron withdrawing/donating functional groups. Experimental results reveal that the introduction of a series of functionalized GQDs during the synthesis of ALQD plays a crucial role. Notably, the higher the concentration and strength of electron-withdrawing functional groups on GQDs, the thinner and more active the resulting ALQD are. Remarkably, the synthesized near atom-layer ALQD-SO3 demonstrate significantly improved HER performance. Our GQD-induced strategy provides a simple and efficient approach for expanding the catalytic application of MoS2. Furthermore, it holds substantial potential for developing nanosheets in other transition-metal dichalcogenide materials.

Single platinum atoms embedded in nanoporous cobalt selenide as electrocatalyst for accelerating hydrogen evolution reaction.

Project description:Designing efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction is significant for renewable and sustainable energy conversion. Here, we report single-atom platinum decorated nanoporous Co0.85Se (Pt/np-Co0.85Se) as efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. The achieved Pt/np-Co0.85Se shows high catalytic performance with a near-zero onset overpotential, a low Tafel slope of 35 mV dec-1, and a high turnover frequency of 3.93 s-1 at -100 mV in neutral media, outperforming commercial Pt/C catalyst and other reported transition-metal-based compounds. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies combined with density functional theory calculations indicate that single-atom platinum in Pt/np-Co0.85Se not only can optimize surface states of Co0.85Se active centers under realistic working conditions, but also can significantly reduce energy barriers of water dissociation and improve adsorption/desorption behavior of hydrogen, which synergistically promote thermodynamics and kinetics. This work opens up further opportunities for local electronic structures tuning of electrocatalysts to effectively manipulate its catalytic properties by an atomic-level engineering strategy.

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Structure: A Metal-Free Electrocatalyst for the Evolution of Hydrogen.

Project description:The hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have gained significant attention due to their various alluring applications in the fascinating field of supramolecular chemistry. Herein, we report the electrocatalytic activity of HOFs toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by utilizing the molecular adduct of cyanuric and trithiocyanuric acid with various organic substrates (melamine and 4,4'-bipyridine). Both the experimental and theoretical findings provide insights and validate the electrocatalytic activity toward HER applications. This work contributes significantly to designing novel highly efficient metal-free HOF-based electrocatalysts for the HER.

Reduced Graphene Oxide Aerogel inside Melamine Sponge as an Electrocatalyst for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:A graphene oxide aerogel (GOA) was formed inside a melamine sponge (MS) framework. After reduction with hydrazine at 60 °C, the electrical conductive nitrogen-enriched rGOA-MS composite material with a specific density of 20.1 mg/cm3 was used to fabricate an electrode, which proved to be a promising electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction. The rGOA-MS composite material was characterized by elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. It was found that nitrogen in the material is presented by different types with the maximum concentration of pyrrole-like nitrogen. By using Raman scattering it was established that the rGOA component of the material is graphene-like carbon with an average size of the sp2-domains of 5.7 nm. This explains a quite high conductivity of the composite obtained.

Hierarchical CdMoO4 nanowire-graphene composite for photocatalytic hydrogen generation under natural sunlight.

Project description:Herein, a facile in situ solvothermal technique for the synthesis of a CdMoO4/graphene composite photocatalyst is reported. Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesised by an improved Hummers' method and was further used for the in situ synthesis of graphene via GO reduction and the formation of a CdMoO4 nanowire/graphene composite. The structural phase formation of tetragonal CdMoO4 was confirmed from X-ray diffraction measurements. The small nanoparticle assembled nanowires, prismatic microsphere morphology and crystalline nature of the synthesized material were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Due to its unique morphology and stability, the CdMoO4/graphene composite was used as a photocatalyst for H2O splitting. In comparison to pristine CdMoO4, the CdMoO4/graphene composite showed the best hydrogen evolution rate, i.e. 3624 μmole h-1 g-1, with an apparent quantum yield of 30.5%. The CdMoO4/graphene composite has a higher photocatalytic activity due to the inhibition of charge carrier recombination. H2 production measurements showed that the ternary semiconductor/graphene composite has enhanced photocatalytic activity for H2 generation.

MoS2 nanosheets direct supported on reduced graphene oxide: An advanced electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction.

Project description:Molybdenum disulfide nanosheets/reduced graphene oxide (MoS2 NSs/rGO) nanohybrid as a highly effective catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have been successfully synthesized by a facile microwave-assisted method. The results clearly reveal that direct grown of MoS2 NSs on rGO have been achieved. Electrochemical tests show that the as-prepared hybrid material exhibited excellent HER activity, with a small Tafel slope of 57 mV dec-1, an overpotential of 130 mV and remarkable cycling stability. After analysis, the observed outstanding catalytic performance can be attributed to the uniform distribution of the MoS2 NSs, which are characterized by the presence of multiple active sites as well as the effective electron transport route provided by the conductive rGO substrate. Moreover, according to the classic theory, the mechanism governing of the catalytic HER on the MoS2 NSs/rGO nanohybrid has been clarified.

CZTS Decorated on Graphene Oxide as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for High-Performance Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) was synthesized by the sonochemical method using 2-methoxyethanol as the solvent and subsequently decorated onto graphene oxide (GO synthesized by the modified Hummers' method) using two different approaches such as in situ growth and ex situ synthesis followed by deposition. Preliminary characterizations indicated that the synthesized CZTS belongs to the kesterite structure with a sphere-like morphology. The in situ-synthesized CZTS/GO (I-CZTS/GO) composite is used as an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) which revealed superior electrocatalytic activity with a reduced overpotential (39.3 mV at 2 mA cm-2), Tafel slope (70 mV dec-1), a larger exchange current density of 908 mA cm-2, and charge transfer resistance (5 Ω), significantly different from pure CZTS. Besides, the I-CZTS/GO composite exhibits highest HER performance with high current stability of which shows no noticeable degradation after i-t amperometry. The catalytic activity demonstrates that the I-CZTS/GO composite could be a promising electrocatalyst in hydrogen production from their cooperative interactions.

N-Doped Graphene as an Efficient Metal-Free Electrocatalyst for Indirect Nitrate Reduction Reaction.

Project description:N-doped graphene samples with different N species contents were prepared by a two-step synthesis method and evaluated as electrocatalysts for the nitrate reduction reaction (NORR) for the first time. In an acidic solution with a saturated calomel electrode as reference, the pyridinic-N dominant sample (NGR2) had an onset of 0.932 V and a half-wave potential of 0.833 V, showing the superior activity towards the NORR compared to the pyrrolic-N dominant N-doped graphene (onset potential: 0.850 V, half-wave potential: 0.732 V) and the pure graphene (onset potential: 0.698 V, half-wave potential: 0.506 V). N doping could significantly boost the NORR performance of N-doped graphene, especially the contribution of pyridinic-N. Density functional theory calculation revealed the pyridinic-N facilitated the desorption of NO, which was kinetically involved in the process of the NORR. The findings of this work would be valuable for the development of metal-free NORR electrocatalysts.
