Orbital-dependent redox potential regulation of quinone derivatives for electrical energy storage.

ABSTRACT: Electrical energy storage in redox flow batteries has received increasing attention. Redox flow batteries using organic compounds, especially quinone-based molecules, as active materials are of particular interest owing to the material sustainability, tailorable redox properties, and environmental friendliness of quinones and their derivatives. In this report, various quinone derivatives were investigated to determine their suitability for applications in organic RFBs. Moreover, the redox potential could be internally regulated through the tuning of σ and π bonding contribution at the redox-active sites. Furthermore, the binding geometry of some selected quinone derivatives with metal cations was studied. These studies provide an alternative strategy to identify and design new quinone molecules with suitable redox potentials for electrical energy storage in organic RFBs.

NQO1-dependent redox cycling of idebenone: effects on cellular redox potential and energy levels.

Project description:Short-chain quinones are described as potent antioxidants and in the case of idebenone have already been under clinical investigation for the treatment of neuromuscular disorders. Due to their analogy to coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a long-chain quinone, they are widely regarded as a substitute for CoQ10. However, apart from their antioxidant function, this provides no clear rationale for their use in disorders with normal CoQ10 levels. Using recombinant NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO) enzymes, we observed that contrary to CoQ10 short-chain quinones such as idebenone are good substrates for both NQO1 and NQO2. Furthermore, the reduction of short-chain quinones by NQOs enabled an antimycin A-sensitive transfer of electrons from cytosolic NAD(P)H to the mitochondrial respiratory chain in both human hepatoma cells (HepG2) and freshly isolated mouse hepatocytes. Consistent with the substrate selectivity of NQOs, both idebenone and CoQ1, but not CoQ10, partially restored cellular ATP levels under conditions of impaired complex I function. The observed cytosolic-mitochondrial shuttling of idebenone and CoQ1 was also associated with reduced lactate production by cybrid cells from mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) patients. Thus, the observed activities separate the effectiveness of short-chain quinones from the related long-chain CoQ10 and provide the rationale for the use of short-chain quinones such as idebenone for the treatment of mitochondrial disorders.

Electrical/optical dual-function redox potential transistor.

Project description:We demonstrate a new type of transistors, the electrical/optical "dual-function redox-potential transistors", which is solution processable and environmentally stable. This device consists of vertically staked electrodes that act as gate, emitter and collector. It can perform as a normal transistor, whilst one electrode which is sensitised by dye enables to generate photocurrent when illuminated. Solution processable oxide-nanoparticles were used to form various functional layers, which allow an electrolyte to penetrate through and, consequently, the current between emitter and collector can be controlled by the gate potential modulated distribution of ions. The result here shows that the device performs with high ON-current under low driving voltage (<1?V), while the transistor performance can readily be controlled by photo-illumination. Such device with combined optical and electrical functionalities allows single device to perform the tasks that are usually done by a circuit/system with multiple optical and electrical components, and it is promising for various applications.

A redox-dependent mechanism for regulation of AMPK activation by Thioredoxin1 during energy starvation.

Project description:5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key regulator of metabolism and survival during energy stress. Dysregulation of AMPK is strongly associated with oxidative-stress-related disease. However, whether and how AMPK is regulated by intracellular redox status remains unknown. Here we show that the activity of AMPK is negatively regulated by oxidation of Cys130 and Cys174 in its α subunit, which interferes with the interaction between AMPK and AMPK kinases (AMPKK). Reduction of Cys130/Cys174 is essential for activation of AMPK during energy starvation. Thioredoxin1 (Trx1), an important reducing enzyme that cleaves disulfides in proteins, prevents AMPK oxidation, serving as an essential cofactor for AMPK activation. High-fat diet consumption downregulates Trx1 and induces AMPK oxidation, which enhances cardiomyocyte death during myocardial ischemia. Thus, Trx1 modulates activation of the cardioprotective AMPK pathway during ischemia, functionally linking oxidative stress and metabolism in the heart.

High-energy-density polymer dielectrics via compositional and structural tailoring for electrical energy storage.

Project description:Dielectric capacitors with higher working voltage and power density are favorable candidates for renewable energy systems and pulsed power applications. A polymer with high breakdown strength, low dielectric loss, great scalability, and reliability is a preferred dielectric material for dielectric capacitors. However, their low dielectric constant limits the polymer to achieve satisfying energy density. Therefore, great efforts have been made to get high-energy-density polymer dielectrics. By compositional and structural tailoring, the synergic integrations of the multiple components and optimized structural design effectively improved the energy storage properties. This review presents an overview of recent advancements in the field of high-energy-density polymer dielectrics via compositional and structural tailoring. The surface/interfacial engineering conducted on both microscale and macroscale for polymer dielectrics is the focus of this review. Challenges and the promising opportunities for the development of polymer dielectrics for capacitive energy storage applications are presented at the end of this review.

Two-way photoswitching norbornadiene derivatives for solar energy storage.

Project description:Molecular photoswitches of norbornadiene (NBD) derivatives have been effectively applied in molecular solar-thermal energy storage (MOST) by photoisomerization of NBD to a quadricyclane (QC) state. However, a challenge of the NBD-based MOST system is the lack of a reversible two-way photoswitching process, limiting conversion from QC to thermal and catalytic methods. Here we design a series of NBD derivatives with a combination of acceptor and donor units to achieve two-way photoswitching, which can optically release energy by back-conversion from QC to NBD. Highly efficient photoconversion yields from NBD to QC and QC to NBD are up to 99% and 82%, respectively. The energy storage density of two-way photoswitching NBD is up to 312 J g-1 and optically controlled two-way photoswitching devices are demonstrated for the first time both in flow and in thin films, which illustrate a promising approach for fast and robust energy release in both solution and solid state.

Energy transducing redox steps of the Na+-pumping NADH:quinone oxidoreductase from Vibrio cholerae.

Project description:Na(+)-NQR is a unique respiratory enzyme that couples the free energy of electron transfer reactions to electrogenic pumping of sodium across the cell membrane. This enzyme is found in many marine and pathogenic bacteria where it plays an analogous role to the H(+)-pumping complex I. It has generally been assumed that the sodium pump of Na(+)-NQR operates on the basis of thermodynamic coupling between reduction of a single redox cofactor and the binding of sodium at a nearby site. In this study, we have defined the coupling to sodium translocation of individual steps in the redox reaction of Na(+)-NQR. Sodium uptake takes place in the reaction step in which an electron moves from the 2Fe-2S center to FMN(C), while the translocation of sodium across the membrane dielectric (and probably its release into the external medium) occurs when an electron moves from FMN(B) to riboflavin. This argues against a single-site coupling model because the redox steps that drive these two parts of the sodium pumping process do not have any redox cofactor in common. The significance of these results for the mechanism of coupling is discussed, and we proposed that Na(+)-NQR operates through a novel mechanism based on kinetic coupling, mediated by conformational changes.

Electrical energy storage using compressed gas in depleted hydraulically fractured wells.

Project description:Renewable forms of electricity generation like solar and wind require low-cost energy storage solutions to meet climate change deployment goals. Here, we explore the use of depleted hydraulically fractured ("fracked") oil and gas wells to store electrical energy in the form of compressed natural gas to be released to spin an expander/generator when electrical demand is high. Our reservoir model indicates that the same dual-porosity geological environment of fracked wells used to liberate hydrocarbons is also suitable for storing and releasing gas in a diurnal or seasonal cycle. Round-trip storage efficiency is calculated to be 40%-70% depending on the natural reservoir temperature. Levelized cost of storage is estimated to be $70-270/MWh, on par with pumped hydro storage. This study indicates that repurposed "fracked" wells could provide a much-needed low-cost seasonal energy storage solution at the TWh scale.

Exploring three-dimensional orbital imaging with energy-dependent photoemission tomography.

Project description:Recently, it has been shown that experimental data from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on oriented molecular films can be utilized to retrieve real-space images of molecular orbitals in two dimensions. Here, we extend this orbital tomography technique by performing photoemission initial state scans as a function of photon energy on the example of the brickwall monolayer of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) on Ag(110). The overall dependence of the photocurrent on the photon energy can be well accounted for by assuming a plane wave for the final state. However, the experimental data, both for the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of PTCDA, exhibits an additional modulation attributed to final state scattering effects. Nevertheless, as these effects beyond a plane wave final state are comparably small, we are able, with extrapolations beyond the attainable photon energy range, to reconstruct three-dimensional images for both orbitals in agreement with calculations for the adsorbed molecule.

Synthesis and Redox Activity of Polyenaminones for Sustainable Energy Storage Applications.

Project description:In the search for novel polymeric molecules that could be used as electroactive materials, seven novel polyenaminones were prepared in high yields by the transaminative polymerization of resorcinol-derived bis-enaminones with m- and p-phenylenediamine and with 2,5-diaminohydroquinone. The obtained polymers show very low solubility in organic solvents and absorb UV light and visible light at wavelengths below 500 nm. All the obtained polymeric products were tested for redox activity in a Li battery setup. The 2,5-diaminohydroquinone-derived compound showed the best redox activity, with a maximum capacity of 86 mAh/g and relatively good capacity retention, thus confirming the hydroquinone group as the primary redox-active group. Other potential redox-active groups, such as resorcinol and conjugated carbonyls, showed limited activity, while variations in the phenylene groups and the substitution of phenolic groups in the resorcinol residue did not impact the electrochemical activity of the polymers. Their electrochemical properties, together with their previously established chemical recyclability, make polyenaminones promising scaffolds for the development of materials for sustainable energy storage applications.

Regulation of quinone oxidoreductase by the redox-sensing transcriptional regulator QorR in Corynebacterium glutamicum.

Project description:Corynebacterium glutamicum cgR_1435 (cg1552) encodes a protein of the DUF24 protein family, which is a novel family of transcriptional regulators. CgR1435 (QorR) is a negative regulator of cgR_1436 (qor2), which is located upstream of cgR_1435 (qorR) in the opposite orientation, and its structural gene. QorR binds to the intergenic region between qor2 and qorR to repress their expression, which is induced by the thiol-specific oxidant diamide. The DNA-binding activity of QorR is impaired by oxidants such as diamide, H(2)O(2), and cumene hydroperoxide in vitro, and its lone cysteine residue (Cys-17) is essential for redox-responsive regulation of QorR activity both in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, a disruptant of qor2, which is a homologue of the ytfG gene of Escherichia coli encoding quinone oxidoreductase, shows increased sensitivity to diamide. It is concluded that the redox-sensing transcriptional regulator QorR is involved in disulfide stress response of C. glutamicum by regulating qor2 expression.
