Enhanced electrochemical properties of cellular CoPS@C nanocomposites for HER, OER and Li-ion batteries.

ABSTRACT: Cellular CoPS@C nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via a facile two-steps route. The performances of the CoPS@C electrode as a non-noble metal electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) show good activity. On the other hand, the electrochemical investigation of CoPS systems for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is reported for the first time. The CoPS@C nanocomposite as a novel anode can maintain a capacity of about 713 mA h g^-1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g^-1, indicating its potential applications in lithium storage. Test results also demonstrate that the CoPS@C nanocomposite exhibit more excellent HER, OER and Li storage performances compared to the bulk CoPS sample.

Synthesis of Sodium Cobalt Fluoride/Reduced Graphene Oxide (NaCoF3/rGO) Nanocomposites and Investigation of Their Electrochemical Properties as Cathodes for Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:In this study, sodium cobalt fluoride (NaCoF3)/reduced graphene oxide (NCF/rGO) nanocomposites were fabricated through a simple one-pot solvothermal process and their electrochemical performance as cathodes for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) was investigated. The NCF nanoclusters (NCs) on the composites (300-500 nm in size) were formed by the assembly of primary nanoparticles (~20 nm), which were then incorporated on the surface of rGO. This morphology provided NCF NCs with a large surface area for efficient ion diffusion and also allowed for close contact with the conductive matrix to promote rapid electron transfer. As a cathode for LIBs, the NCF/rGO electrode achieved a high reversible capacity of 465 mAh·g-1 at 20 mA·g-1 via the conversion reaction, and this enhancement represented more than five times the reversible capacity of the bare NCF electrode. Additionally, the NCF/rGO electrode exhibited both better specific capacity and cyclability within the current density testing range (from 20 to 200 mA·g-1), compared with those of the bare NCF electrode.

Electrochemical properties of cobalt hydroxychloride microspheres as a new anode material for Li-ion batteries.

Project description:The use of cobalt hydroxychloride [Co2(OH)3Cl] as an anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is investigated using spherical shape and ultrafine nanocrystals directly formed by spray pyrolysis from spray solution of cobalt chloride salt. Dot-mapping images of the resulting powders reveal a uniform distribution of Co, O, and Cl throughout the powder. The Co2(OH)3Cl powder prepared directly by spray pyrolysis exhibits a high thermal stability at temperatures below 220 °C, as well as having superior electrochemical properties compared with those of the CoCl2(H2O)2 and CoO powders prepared by the same process. The initial discharge capacities of the Co2(OH)3Cl and CoO powders at a constant current density of 1000 mA g(-1) are found to be 1570 and 1142 mA h g(-1), respectively, and their initial Coulombic efficiencies are 72 and 70%. The discharge capacities of the Co2(OH)3Cl and CoO powders after 100 cycles are 955 and 632 mA h g(-1), respectively. The Co2(OH)3Cl powders have a high discharge capacity of 609 mA h g(-1) even after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 5000 mA g(-1).

Electrochemical Performance of Orthorhombic CsPbI3 Perovskite in Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:A facile solution process was employed to prepare CsPbI3 as an anode material for Li-ion batteries. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray data confirms the orthorhombic phase of CsPbI3 at room temperature. As obtained from bond valence calculations, strained bonds between Pb and I are identified within PbI6 octahedral units. Morphological study shows that the as-prepared δ-CsPbI3 forms a nanorod-like structure. The XPS analysis confirm the presence of Cs (3d, 4d), Pb (4d, 4f, 5d) and I (3p, 3d, 4d). The lithiation process involves both intercalation and conversion reactions, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and first-principles calculations. Impedance spectroscopy coupled with the distribution function of relaxation times identifies charge transfer processes due to Li metal foil and anode/electrolyte interfaces. An initial discharge capacity of 151 mAhg-1 is found to continuously increase to reach a maximum of ~275 mAhg-1 at 65 cycles, while it drops to ~240 mAhg-1 at 75 cycles and then slowly decreases to 235 mAhg-1 at 100 cycles. Considering the performance and structural integrity during electrochemical performance, δ-CsPbI3 is a promising material for future Li-ion battery (LIB) application.

Material Design and Optimisation of Electrochemical Li-Ion Storage Properties of Ternary Silicon Oxycarbide/Graphite/Tin Nanocomposites.

Project description:In this work, we present the characterization and electrochemical performance of various ternary silicon oxycarbide/graphite/tin (SiOC/C/Sn) nanocomposites as anodes for lithium-ion batteries. In binary SiOC/Sn composites, tin nanoparticles may be produced in situ via carbothermal reduction of SnO2 to metallic Sn, which consumes free carbon from the SiOC ceramic phase, thereby limiting the carbon content in the final ceramic nanocomposite. Therefore, to avoid drawbacks with carbon depletion, we used graphite as a substitute during the synthesis of precursors. The ternary composites were synthesized from liquid precursors and flake graphite using the ultrasound-assisted hydrosilylation method and pyrolysis at 1000 °C in an Ar atmosphere. The role of the graphitic component is to ensure good electric conductivity and the softness of the material, which are crucial for long term stability during alloying-dealloying processes. The presented approach allows us to increase the content of the tin precursor from 40 wt.% to 60 wt.% without losing the electrochemical stability of the final material. The charge/discharge capacity (at 372 mA g-1 current rate) of the tailored SiOC/C/Sn composite is about 100 mAh g-1 higher compared with that of the binary SiOC/Sn composite. The ternary composites, however, are more sensitive to high current rates (above 372 mA g-1) compared to the binary one because of the presence of graphitic carbon.

Electrochemical Oscillation during Galvanostatic Charging of LiCrTiO4 in Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:In the late 1960s, the establishment of Prigogine's dissipative structure theory laid the foundation for the (electro)chemical oscillation phenomenon, which has been widely investigated in some electrochemical reactions, such as electro-catalysis and electro-deposition, while the electrochemical oscillation of Li-ion batteries has just been discovered in spinel Li4Ti5O12 a few years before. In this work, spinel LiCrTiO4 samples were synthesized by using a high-temperature solid-state method, characterized with SEM (Scanning electron microscope), XRD (X-ray diffraction), Raman and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) measurements, and electrochemically tested in Li-ion batteries to study the electrochemical oscillation. When sintering in a powder form at a temperature between 800 and 900 °C, we achieved the electrochemical oscillation of spinel LiCrTiO4 during charging, and it is suppressed in the non-stoichiometric LiCrTiO4 samples, especially for reducing the Li content or increasing the Cr content. Therefore, this work developed another two-phase material as the powder-sintered LiCrTiO4 exhibiting the electrochemical oscillation in Li-ion batteries, which would inspire us to explore more two-phase electrode materials in Li-ion batteries, Na-ion batteries, etc.

Electrochemical Li Topotactic Reaction in Layered SnP3 for Superior Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:The development of new anode materials having high electrochemical performances and interesting reaction mechanisms is highly required to satisfy the need for long-lasting mobile electronic devices and electric vehicles. Here, we report a layer crystalline structured SnP3 and its unique electrochemical behaviors with Li. The SnP3 was simply synthesized through modification of Sn crystallography by combination with P and its potential as an anode material for LIBs was investigated. During Li insertion reaction, the SnP3 anode showed an interesting two-step electrochemical reaction mechanism comprised of a topotactic transition (0.7-2.0 V) and a conversion (0.0-2.0 V) reaction. When the SnP3-based composite electrode was tested within the topotactic reaction region (0.7-2.0 V) between SnP3 and LixSnP3 (x ≤ 4), it showed excellent electrochemical properties, such as a high volumetric capacity (1st discharge/charge capacity was 840/663 mA h cm-3) with a high initial coulombic efficiency, stable cycle behavior (636 mA h cm-3 over 100 cycles), and fast rate capability (550 mA h cm-3 at 3C). This layered SnP3 anode will be applicable to a new anode material for rechargeable LIBs.

Scalable Synthesis and Electrochemical Properties of Porous Si-CoSi2-C Composites as an Anode for Li-ion Batteries.

Project description:Si-based anodes for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) are considered to be an attractive alternative to graphite due to their higher capacity, but they have low electrical conductivity and degrade mechanically during cycling. In the current study, we report on a mass-producible porous Si-CoSi2-C composite as a high-capacity anode material for LIBs. The composite was synthesized with two-step milling followed by a simple chemical etching process. The material conversion and porous structure were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. The electrochemical test results demonstrated that the Si-CoSi2-C composite electrode exhibits greatly improved cycle and rate performance compared with conventional Si-C composite electrodes. These results can be ascribed to the role of CoSi2 and inside pores. The CoSi2 synthesized in situ during high-energy mechanical milling can be well attached to the Si; its conductive phase can increase electrical connection with the carbon matrix and the Cu current collectors; and it can accommodate Si volume changes during cycling. The proposed synthesis strategy can provide a facile and cost-effective method to produce Si-based materials for commercial LIB anodes.

Eco-friendly nitrogen-containing carbon encapsulated LiMn2O4 cathodes to enhance the electrochemical properties in rechargeable Li-ion batteries.

Project description:This study describes the synthesis of nitrogen-containing carbon (N-C) and an approach to apply the N-C material as a surface encapsulant of LiMn2O4 (LMO) cathode material. The N heteroatoms in the N-C material improve the electrochemical performance of LMO. A low-cost wet coating method was used to prepare N-C@LMO particles. The N-C@LMO was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), high-resolution Raman spectroscopy (HR-Raman), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and field emission scanning transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM) with elemental mapping. Furthermore, the prepared samples were electrochemically studied using the AC electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and the electrochemical cycler. XPS suggested that the N-C coating greatly reduced the dissolution of Mn and EIS showed that the coating greatly suppressed the charge transfer resistance, even after long-term cycling. The control of Mn dissolution and inner resistance allowed faster Li-ion transport between the two electrodes resulting in improved discharge capacity and cycling stability.

ZnSe nanoparticles dispersed in reduced graphene oxides with enhanced electrochemical properties in lithium/sodium ion batteries.

Project description:A ZnSe-reduced graphene oxide (ZnSe-rGO) nanocomposite with ZnSe dispersed in rGO is prepared via a one-step hydrothermal method and applied as the anode materials for both lithium and sodium ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs). The as-prepared composite exhibits greatly enhanced reversible capacity, excellent cycling stability and rate capability (530 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at 500 mA g-1 in LIBs, 259.5 mA h g-1 after 50 cycles at the current density of 100 mA g-1 in SIBs) compared with bare ZnSe in both lithium and sodium storage. The rGO plays an influential role in enhancing the conductivity of the nanocomposites, buffering the volume change and preventing the aggregation of ZnSe particles during the cycling process, thus securing the high structure stability and reversibility of the electrode.

A Critical Analysis of Chemical and Electrochemical Oxidation Mechanisms in Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Electrolyte decomposition limits the lifetime of commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and slows the adoption of next-generation energy storage technologies. A fundamental understanding of electrolyte degradation is critical to rationally design stable and energy-dense LIBs. To date, most explanations for electrolyte decomposition at LIB positive electrodes have relied on ethylene carbonate (EC) being chemically oxidized by evolved singlet oxygen (1O2) or electrochemically oxidized. In this work, we apply density functional theory to assess the feasibility of these mechanisms. We find that electrochemical oxidation is unfavorable at any potential reached during normal LIB operation, and we predict that previously reported reactions between the EC and 1O2 are kinetically limited at room temperature. Our calculations suggest an alternative mechanism in which EC reacts with superoxide (O2-) and/or peroxide (O22-) anions. This work provides a new perspective on LIB electrolyte decomposition and motivates further studies to understand the reactivity at positive electrodes.
