Unveiling hidden energy poverty using the energy equity gap.

ABSTRACT: Income-based energy poverty metrics ignore people's behavior patterns, particularly reducing energy consumption to limit financial stress. We investigate energy-limiting behavior in low-income households using a residential electricity consumption dataset. We first determine the outdoor temperature at which households start using cooling systems, the inflection temperature. Our relative energy poverty metric, the energy equity gap, is defined as the difference in the inflection temperatures between low and high-income groups. In our study region, we estimate the energy equity gap to be between 4.7-7.5 °F (2.6-4.2 °C). Within a sample of 4577 households, we found 86 energy-poor and 214 energy-insecure households. In contrast, the income-based energy poverty metric, energy burden (10% threshold), identified 141 households as energy-insecure. Only three households overlap between our energy equity gap and the income-based measure. Thus, the energy equity gap reveals a hidden but complementary aspect of energy poverty and insecurity.

Unveiling the Hidden Rules of Spherical Viruses Using Point Arrays.

Project description:Since its introduction, the Triangulation number has been the most successful and ubiquitous scheme for classifying spherical viruses. However, despite its many successes, it fails to describe the relative angular orientations of proteins, as well as their radial mass distribution within the capsid. It also fails to provide any critical insight into sites of stability, modifications or possible mutations. We show how classifying spherical viruses using icosahedral point arrays, introduced by Keef and Twarock, unveils new geometric rules and constraints for understanding virus stability and key locations for exterior and interior modifications. We present a modified fitness measure which classifies viruses in an unambiguous and rigorous manner, irrespective of local surface chemistry, steric hinderance, solvent accessibility or Triangulation number. We then use these point arrays to explain the immutable surface loops of bacteriophage MS2, the relative reactivity of surface lysine residues in CPMV and the non-quasi-equivalent flexibility of the HBV dimers. We then explain how point arrays can be used as a predictive tool for site-directed modifications of capsids. This success builds on our previous work showing that viruses place their protruding features along the great circles of the asymmetric unit, demonstrating that viruses indeed adhere to these geometric constraints.

Unveiling hidden multipolar orders with magnetostriction.

Project description:Broken symmetries in solids involving higher order multipolar degrees of freedom are historically referred to as "hidden orders" due to the formidable task of detecting them with conventional probes. In this work, we theoretically propose that magnetostriction provides a powerful and novel tool to directly detect higher-order multipolar symmetry breaking-such as the elusive octupolar order-by examining scaling behaviour of length change with respect to an applied magnetic field h. Employing a symmetry-based Landau theory, we focus on the family of Pr-based cage compounds with strongly correlated f-electrons, Pr(Ti,V,Ir)2(Al,Zn)20, whose low energy degrees of freedom are purely higher-order multipoles: quadrupoles [Formula: see text] and octupole [Formula: see text]. We demonstrate that a magnetic field along the [111] direction induces a distinct linear-in-h length change below the octupolar ordering temperature. The resulting "magnetostriction coefficient" is directly proportional to the octupolar order parameter, thus providing clear access to such subtle order parameters.

Unveiling the hidden depths: advancements in underwater image enhancement using deep learning and auto-encoders.

Project description:Underwater images hold immense value for various fields, including marine biology research, underwater infrastructure inspection, and exploration activities. However, capturing high-quality images underwater proves challenging due to light absorption and scattering leading to color distortion, blue green hues. Additionally, these phenomena decrease contrast and visibility, hindering the ability to extract valuable information. Existing image enhancement methods often struggle to achieve accurate color correction while preserving crucial image details. This article proposes a novel deep learning-based approach for underwater image enhancement that leverages the power of autoencoders. Specifically, a convolutional autoencoder is trained to learn a mapping from the distorted colors present in underwater images to their true, color-corrected counterparts. The proposed model is trained and tested using the Enhancing Underwater Visual Perception (EUVP) and Underwater Image Enhancement Benchmark (UIEB) datasets. The performance of the model is evaluated and compared with various traditional and deep learning based image enhancement techniques using the quality measures structural similarity index (SSIM), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and mean squared error (MSE). This research aims to address the critical limitations of current techniques by offering a superior method for underwater image enhancement by improving color fidelity and better information extraction capabilities for various applications. Our proposed color correction model based on encoder decoder network achieves higher SSIM and PSNR values.

Unveiling Hidden Dynamics of Hippo Signalling: A Systems Analysis.

Project description:The Hippo signalling pathway has recently emerged as an important regulator of cell apoptosis and proliferation with significant implications in human diseases. In mammals, the pathway contains the core kinases MST1/2, which phosphorylate and activate LATS1/2 kinases. The pro-apoptotic function of the MST/LATS signalling axis was previously linked to the Akt and ERK MAPK pathways, demonstrating that the Hippo pathway does not act alone but crosstalks with other signalling pathways to coordinate network dynamics and cellular outcomes. These crosstalks were characterised by a multitude of complex regulatory mechanisms involving competitive protein-protein interactions and phosphorylation mediated feedback loops. However, how these different mechanisms interplay in different cellular contexts to drive the context-specific network dynamics of Hippo-ERK signalling remains elusive. Using mathematical modelling and computational analysis, we uncovered that the Hippo-ERK network can generate highly diverse dynamical profiles that can be clustered into distinct dose-response patterns. For each pattern, we offered mechanistic explanation that defines when and how the observed phenomenon can arise. We demonstrated that Akt displays opposing, dose-dependent functions towards ERK, which are mediated by the balance between the Raf-1/MST2 protein interaction module and the LATS1 mediated feedback regulation. Moreover, Ras displays a multi-functional role and drives biphasic responses of both MST2 and ERK activities; which are critically governed by the competitive protein interaction between MST2 and Raf-1. Our study represents the first in-depth and systematic analysis of the Hippo-ERK network dynamics and provides a concrete foundation for future studies.

Measuring social equity in urban energy use and interventions using fine-scale data.

Project description:Cities seek nuanced understanding of intraurban inequality in energy use, addressing both income and race, to inform equitable investment in climate actions. However, nationwide energy consumption surveys are limited (<6,000 samples in the United States), and utility-provided data are highly aggregated. Limited prior analyses suggest disparity in energy use intensity (EUI) by income is ∼25%, while racial disparities are not quantified nor unpacked from income. This paper, using new empirical fine spatial scale data covering all 200,000 households in two US cities, along with separating temperature-sensitive EUI, reveals intraurban EUI disparities up to a factor of five greater than previously known. We find 1) annual EUI disparity ratios of 1.27 and 1.66, comparing lowest- versus highest-income block groups (i.e., 27 and 66% higher), while previous literature indicated only ∼25% difference; 2) a racial effect distinct from income, wherein non-White block groups (highest quintile non-White percentage) in the lowest-income stratum reported up to a further ∼40% higher annual EUI than less diverse block groups, providing an empirical estimate of racial disparities; 3) separating temperature-sensitive EUI unmasked larger disparities, with heating-cooling electricity EUI of lowest-income block groups up to 2.67 times (167% greater) that of highest income, and high racial disparity within lowest-income strata wherein high non-White (>75%) population block groups report EUI up to 2.56 times (156% larger) that of majority White block groups; and 4) spatial scales of data aggregation impact inequality measures. Quadrant analyses are developed to guide spatial prioritization of energy investment for carbon mitigation and equity. These methods are potentially translatable to other cities and utilities.

Localized energy burden, concentrated disadvantage, and the feminization of energy poverty.

Project description:Energy burden directly influences households' health and safety. Amid a growing literature on energy, poverty and gender remains relatively understudied. We evaluate socioeconomic, geographic, and health factors as multidimensions of concentrated disadvantage that magnify energy burden in the United States over time. We show that the energy burden is more pronounced in disadvantaged counties with larger elderly, impoverished, disabled people, and racialized populations where people do not have health insurance. Neighborhoods with households headed by women of color (especially Black women) are more likely to face a high energy burden, which worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although energy costs are often regarded as an individual responsibility, these findings illustrate the feminization of energy poverty and indicate the need for an intersectional and interdisciplinary framework in devising energy policy directed to households with the most severe energy burden.

Unveiling hidden ferrimagnetism and giant magnetoelectricity in polar magnet Fe2Mo3O8.

Project description:Magnetoelectric (ME) effect is recognized for its utility for low-power electronic devices. Largest ME coefficients are often associated with phase transitions in which ferroelectricity is induced by magnetic order. Unfortunately, in these systems, large ME response is revealed only upon elaborate poling procedures. These procedures may become unnecessary in single-polar-domain crystals of polar magnets. Here we report giant ME effects in a polar magnet Fe2Mo3O8 at temperatures as high as 60 K. Polarization jumps of 0.3 μC/cm(2), and repeated mutual control of ferroelectric and magnetic moments with differential ME coefficients on the order of 10(4) ps/m are achieved. Importantly, no electric or magnetic poling is needed, as necessary for applications. The sign of the ME coefficients can be switched by changing the applied "bias" magnetic field. The observed effects are associated with a hidden ferrimagnetic order unveiled by application of a magnetic field.
