A solvent-free mechanochemical synthesis of polyaromatic hydrocarbon derivatives.

ABSTRACT: Polyaromatic hydrocarbons are central molecules in the future of nanotechnology. However, the synthesis of these molecules is limited by their lack of solubility in solvents, especially green solvents, their ease of oxidation in solution and use of harmful reagents. Solvent-free mechanochemistry has been shown to have excellent potential for these types of molecules and should provide a much more environmentally benign approach for the synthesis of this very important class of molecules. This report details the use of mechanochemistry on an iterative strategy for the synthesis of polyaromatic hydrocarbon derivatives.

Mechanochemical Solvent-Free Catalytic C-H Methylation.

Project description:The mechanochemical, solvent-free, highly regioselective, rhodium-catalyzed C-H methylation of (hetero)arenes is reported. The reaction shows excellent functional-group compatibility and is demonstrated to work for the late-stage C-H methylation of biologically active compounds. The method requires no external heating and benefits from considerably shorter reaction times than previous solution-based C-H methylation protocols. Additionally, the mechanochemical approach is shown to enable the efficient synthesis of organometallic complexes that are difficult to generate conventionally.

Solvent-free synthesis and characterization of allyl chitosan derivatives.

Project description:The solvent-free synthesis of allyl-substituted chitosan derivatives through reactive co-extrusion of chitosan powder with allyl bromide at shear deformation was performed. For the structural characterization, FTIR and NMR methods were employed. The results were confirmed by chemical analysis. The total content of allyl substituents from 5 to 50 per 100 chitosan units as a function of the component ratio in the reactive mixtures was revealed. Carrying out the reaction without any additives leads to the selective formation of N-alkylated derivatives, whereas in the presence of alkali the ethers of chitosan were preferentially formed. The results suggest that the proposed approach allows significantly higher yield of products to be obtained at high process speeds and significantly lower reagent consumption as compared with the liquid-phase synthesis in organic medium. The synthesized unsaturated derivatives are promising photosensitive components for use in laser stereolithography for fabrication of three-dimensional biocompatible structures with well-defined architectonics.

Scale-Up of Solvent-Free, Mechanochemical Precursor Synthesis for Nanoporous Carbon Materials via Extrusion.

Project description:The mechanochemical synthesis of nitrogen-rich nanoporous carbon materials has been scaled up using an extruder. Lignin, urea, and K2 CO3 were extruded under heat and pressure to yield nanoporous carbons with up to 3500 m2 g-1 specific surface area after pyrolysis. The route was further broadened by applying different nitrogen sources as well as sawdust as a low-cost renewable feedstock to receive carbons with a C/N ratio of up to 15 depending on nitrogen source and extrusion parameters. The texture of obtained carbons was investigated by scanning electron microscopy as well as argon and nitrogen physisorption, while the chemical structure was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The received carbon was tested as a supercapacitor electrode, showing comparable performance to similar ball-mill-synthesized materials. Lastly, the space-time yield was applied to justify the use of a continuous reactor versus the ball mill.

Solvent-free copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition under mechanochemical activation.

Project description:The ball-mill-based mechanochemical activation of metallic copper powder facilitates solvent-free alkyne-azide click reactions (CuAAC). All parameters that affect reaction rate (i.e., milling time, revolutions/min, size and milling ball number) have been optimized. This new, efficient, facile and eco-friendly procedure has been tested on a number of different substrates and in all cases afforded the corresponding 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole derivatives in high yields and purities. The final compounds were isolated in almost quantitative overall yields after simple filtration, making this procedure facile and rapid. The optimized CuAAC protocol was efficiently applied even with bulky functionalized β-cyclodextrins (β-CD) and scaled-up to 10 g of isolated product.

The mechanochemical Scholl reaction as a versatile synthesis tool for the solvent-free generation of microporous polymers.

Project description:Herein we report the mechanochemical Scholl polymerization of 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene in a high speed ball mill. The reaction is conducted solvent-free, solely using solid FeCl3. The resulting porous polymer was obtained in >99% yield after very short reaction times of only 5 minutes and exhibits a high specific surface area of 658 m2 g-1, which could be further enhanced up to 990 m2 g-1 by liquid assisted grinding. Within this study we illuminate the origin of porosity by investigating the impact of various milling parameters and milling materials, temperature and pressure, and different liquids for LAG as well as post polymer milling. Finally we expand the procedure to different monomers and mills, to present the mechanochemical Scholl reaction as a versatile synthesis tool for porous polymers.

Mechanochemical and solvent-free assembly of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:We develop the first mechanochemical and solvent-free routes for zirconium metal-organic frameworks, making the frameworks UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 accessible on the gram scale without strong acids, high temperatures or excess reactants. The frameworks form either by milling, or spontaneous self-assembly by simply exposing solid mixtures of reactants to organic vapour. The generated frameworks exhibit high porosity and catalytic activity in the hydrolysis of model nerve agents, on par with their solvothermally generated counterparts.

Solvent-Free Mechanochemical Synthesis of ZnO Nanoparticles by High-Energy Ball Milling of ε-Zn(OH)2 Crystals.

Project description:A detailed investigation is presented for the solvent-free mechanochemical synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles from ε-Zn(OH)2 crystals by high-energy ball milling. Only a few works have ever explored the dry synthetic route from ε-Zn(OH)2 to ZnO. The milling process of ε-Zn(OH)2 was done in ambient conditions with a 1:100 powder/ball mass ratio, and it produced uniform ZnO nanoparticles with sizes of 10-30 nm, based on the milling duration. The process was carefully monitored and the effect of the milling duration on the powder composition, nanoparticle size and strain, optical properties, aggregate size, and material activity was examined using XRD, TEM, DLS, UV-Vis, and FTIR. The mechanism for the transformation of ε-Zn(OH)2 to ZnO was studied by TGA and XPS analysis. The study gave proof for a reaction mechanism starting with a phase transition of crystalline ε-Zn(OH)2 to amorphous Zn(OH)2, followed by decomposition to ZnO and water. To the best of our knowledge, this mechanochemical approach for synthesizing ZnO from ε-Zn(OH)2 is completely novel. ε-Zn(OH)2 crystals are very easy to obtain, and the milling process is done in ambient conditions; therefore, this work provides a simple, cheap, and solvent-free way to produce ZnO nanoparticles in dry conditions. We believe that this study could help to shed some light on the solvent-free transition from ε-Zn(OH)2 to ZnO and that it could offer a new synthetic route for synthesizing ZnO nanoparticles.

Solvent-Free Synthesis of Amidated Carboxymethyl Cellulose Derivatives: Effect on the Thermal Properties.

Project description:The present work explores the possibility of chemically modifying carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), a widely diffused commercial cellulose ether, by grafting of hydrophobic moieties. Amidation of CMC, at high temperature and in heterogeneous conditions, was selected as synthetic tool for grafting on CMC a panel of commercially available amines (bearing long aliphatic chains, alkyl aromatic and heteroaromatic groups, more or less spaced from the cellulose backbone). The reaction was successfully carried out in absence of solvents, catalysts and coupling agents, providing a promising and more sustainable alternative to conventional amidation procedures. Relationships between the chemical structure of the obtained CMC derivatives and their thermal properties were carefully studied, with a particular attention to the thermal behavior. Grafting of aromatic and heteroaromatic alkyl amines, presenting a linear alkyl chain between CMC backbone and a terminal bulky moiety, allowed for efficiently separating the polysaccharide chains, improving their mobility and resulting in a consequent lowering of the glass transition temperature (Tg). The Tg values obtained (90-147 °C) were found to be closely dependent on both the size of the aliphatic spacer, the structure of the aromatic ring and the extent of amidation.
