Optimization of metal-organic (citric acid) frameworks for controlled release of nutrients.

ABSTRACT: Although polymer-coated controlled-release fertilizers have been under development for decades, their high costs, complex production processes, and potential environmental hazards have limited their application. Therefore, it is necessary to design and develop new materials for controlled nutrient release. In this study, two novel MOFs, compounds I and II, were successfully fabricated and optimized using ferric chloride, phosphoric acid, citric acid, and urea under hydrothermal conditions. The N, P, and Fe contents in compound I were 9.05%, 14.92%, and 14.55%, respectively, while the corresponding values in compound II were 10.78%, 14.10%, and 16.68%. The soil incubation results revealed that both compounds showed good slow-release longevity (more than 100 days). This study provides a new strategy for the fabrication of novel controlled-release fertilizers.

Fe-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Controlled Release of Fertilizer Nutrients.

Project description:Due to the controlled-delivery function of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for gases, drugs, and pesticides, iron-based MOFs (Fe-MOFs) were explored in the laboratory as a novel fertilizer, which showed potential for use in the fertilizer industry; the challenge in the industrial scale application of Fe-MOFs in practical crop production was mainly the impact of scaling-up to energy and heat transfer, as well as the reaction yield. In this study, Fe-MOFs were hydrothermally synthesized both in the laboratory scale and in the pilot scale, their structure and components were characterized using various spectroscopic techniques, and then their nutrient release and degradation behaviors were investigated. The results showed that Fe-MOFs were successfully synthesized in both scales with similar yields around 27%, and the Fe-MOFs showed a similar structure with the molecular formula of C2H15Fe2N2O18P3. The nutrients N, P, and Fe were present in the Fe-MOFs with the average contents of 6.03, 14.48, and 14.69%, respectively. Importantly, the nutrient release rate and pattern of Fe-MOFs well matched with the crop growth, which greatly promoted the rice yield. Therefore, the environmentally friendly compounds of Fe-MOFs could be industrially produced and used as an innovative fertilizer with unique features of varied nutrients and controlled release.

Long-term entrapment and temperature-controlled-release of SF6 gas in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

Project description:In this work, a metal-organic framework (MOF), namely MFU-4, which is comprised of zinc cations and benzotriazolate ligands, was used to entrap SF6 gas molecules inside its pores, and thus a new scheme for long-term leakproof storage of dangerous gasses is demonstrated. The SF6 gas was introduced into the pores at an elevated gas pressure and temperature. Upon cooling down and release of the gas pressure, we discovered that the gas was well-trapped inside the pores and did not leak out - not even after two months of exposure to air at room temperature. The material was thoroughly analyzed before and after the loading as well as after given periods of time (1, 3, 7, 14 or 60 days) after the loading. The studies included powder X-ray diffraction measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, 19F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and computational simulations. In addition, the possibility to release the gas guest by applying elevated temperature, vacuum and acid-induced framework decomposition was also investigated. The controlled gas release using elevated temperature has the additional benefit that the host MOF can be reused for further gas capture cycles.

Exchange controlled triplet fusion in metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:Triplet-fusion-based photon upconversion holds promise for a wide range of applications, from photovoltaics to bioimaging. The efficiency of triplet fusion, however, is fundamentally limited in conventional molecular and polymeric systems by its spin dependence. Here, we show that the inherent tailorability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), combined with their highly porous but ordered structure, minimizes intertriplet exchange coupling and engineers effective spin mixing between singlet and quintet triplet-triplet pair states. We demonstrate singlet-quintet coupling in a pyrene-based MOF, NU-1000. An anomalous magnetic field effect is observed from NU-1000 corresponding to an induced resonance between singlet and quintet states that yields an increased fusion rate at room temperature under a relatively low applied magnetic field of 0.14 T. Our results suggest that MOFs offer particular promise for engineering the spin dynamics of multiexcitonic processes and improving their upconversion performance.

Optimization of Pore-Space-Partitioned Metal-Organic Frameworks Using the Bioisosteric Concept.

Project description:Pore space partitioning (PSP) is methodically suited for dramatically increasing the density of guest binding sites, leading to the partitioned acs (pacs) platform capable of record-high uptake for CO2 and small hydrocarbons such as C2Hx. For gas separation, achieving high selectivity amid PSP-enabled high uptake offers an enticing prospect. Here we aim for high selectivity by introducing the bioisosteric (BIS) concept, a widely used drug design strategy, into the realm of pore-space-partitioned MOFs. New pacs materials have high C2H2/CO2 selectivity of up to 29, high C2H2 uptake of up to 144 cm3/g (298 K, 1 atm), and high separation potential of up to 5.3 mmol/g, leading to excellent experimental breakthrough performance. These metrics, coupled with exceptional tunability, high stability, and low regeneration energy, demonstrate the broad potential of the BIS-PSP strategy.

Materials design by evolutionary optimization of functional groups in metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:A genetic algorithm that efficiently optimizes a desired physical or functional property in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by evolving the functional groups within the pores has been developed. The approach has been used to optimize the CO2 uptake capacity of 141 experimentally characterized MOFs under conditions relevant for postcombustion CO2 capture. A total search space of 1.65 trillion structures was screened, and 1035 derivatives of 23 different parent MOFs were identified as having exceptional CO2 uptakes of >3.0 mmol/g (at 0.15 atm and 298 K). Many well-known MOF platforms were optimized, with some, such as MIL-47, having their CO2 adsorption increase by more than 400%. The structures of the high-performing MOFs are provided as potential targets for synthesis.

The Study of Release Mechanisms for Drug in Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:γ-Cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (γCDMOF) recently emerged as biofriendly, highly porous, and crystalline materials with potential applications in drug delivery. However, little is known about their drug entrapment and release characteristics, which are key parameters in the design of drug carriers. The macroscopic properties of a material are determined by its microstructure. Thus, the characteristics of the constitutive units of the cubic crystalline γCDMOF determine their drug loading and release behaviors. In this study, the release profile of prednisolone (PNS) form γCDMOF was predicted, and the mechanism was analyzed based on the γCDMOF molecular structure. For the first time, experimental, molecular simulation, and mathematical modeling methods were combined to gain insights into the drug distribution in cubic porous crystals of γCDMOF as well as on drug release kinetics. The predicted release profile was in good agreement with the experimental results, showing that the modeling method was reliable. The methodology developed here could provide a reference for further investigations of drug penetration and release in supramolecular systems.

Retrofitting metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:The post-synthetic installation of linker molecules between open-metal sites (OMSs) and undercoordinated metal-nodes in a metal-organic framework (MOF) - retrofitting - has recently been discovered as a powerful tool to manipulate macroscopic properties such as the mechanical robustness and the thermal expansion behavior. So far, the choice of cross linkers (CLs) that are used in retrofitting experiments is based on qualitative considerations. Here, we present a low-cost computational framework that provides experimentalists with a tool for evaluating various CLs for retrofitting a given MOF system with OMSs. After applying our approach to the prototypical system CL@Cu3BTC2 (BTC = 1,3,5-benzentricarboxylate) the methodology was expanded to NOTT-100 and NOTT-101 MOFs, identifying several promising CLs for future CL@NOTT-100 and CL@NOTT-101 retrofitting experiments. The developed model is easily adaptable to other MOFs with OMSs and is set-up to be used by experimentalists, providing a guideline for the synthesis of new retrofitted MOFs with modified physicochemical properties.

Distinguishing Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:We consider two metal-organic frameworks as identical if they share the same bond network respecting the atom types. An algorithm is presented that decides whether two metal-organic frameworks are the same. It is based on distinguishing structures by comparing a set of descriptors that is obtained from the bond network. We demonstrate our algorithm by analyzing the CoRe MOF database of DFT optimized structures with DDEC partial atomic charges using the program package ToposPro.

Real-time drug release monitoring from pH-responsive CuS-encapsulated metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:Real-time monitoring of drug release behaviors over extended periods of time is critical in understanding the dynamics of drug progression for personalized chemotherapeutic treatment. In this work, we report a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nanotheranostic system encapsulated with photothermal agents (CuS) and therapeutic drug (DOX) to achieve the capabilities of real-time drug release monitoring and combined chemo-photothermal therapy. Meanwhile, folic acid-conjugated polyethylene glycol (FA-PEG) antennas were connected to the MOF through coordination interactions, endowing the MOF with an enhanced active targeting effect toward cancer cells. It is anticipated that such a theranostic agent, simultaneously possessing tumor-targeting, real-time drug monitoring and effective treatment, will potentially enhance the performance in cancer therapy.
