Surface modification of ZnMgAl-coated steel by dielectric-barrier discharge plasma.

ABSTRACT: In this study, ZnMgAl alloy coated steel sheets were exposed to a dielectric-barrier discharge plasma with different gas mixtures (Ar, Ar + 5% O₂, Ar + 5% H₂O). Five different plasma-induced processes were identified at the surface: (i) etching of aliphatic carbon groups, (ii) conversion of absorbed carboxylates to carbonates, (iii) field-induced migration of Zn and Mg towards the surface, (iv) increased oxide layer thickness, and (v) homogenization of the surface potential of the originally very heterogeneous alloy. The relative contribution of each process depended on the specific gas mixture. Peel-test studies showed that all atmospheric-pressure plasma treatments improved the adhesive properties of the alloy coating for two different adhesives (acrylate and epoxy amine). The highest improvement was associated to the case of Ar + 5% H₂O gas mixture, where all described surface processes took place to a high degree.

Surface modification of electrospun silk/AMOX/PVA nanofibers by dielectric barrier discharge plasma: physiochemical properties, drug delivery and in-vitro biocompatibility.

Project description:The naturally obtained protein Bombyxmori silk is a biocompatible polymer with excellent mechanical properties and have the potential in controlled drug delivery applications. In this work, we have demonstrated dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) oxygen (O2) plasma surface modified electrospun Bombyxmori silk/Amoxicillin hydrochloride trihydrate (AMOX)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers for drug release applications with controlled plasma treatment duration (1-10 min). The findings indicate that plasma treated electrospun nanofibers for 1-3 min exhibited significant enhancement in tensile strength, Young's modulus, wettability and surface energy. The plasma treated electrospun nanofibers for 1-5 min showed remarkable increase in AMOX released rate, whereas the electrospun nanofibers treated with plasma irradiation beyond 5 min showed only marginal increase. Moreover, the plasma treated nanofibers also exhibited good antibacterial activity against both E. coli (gram negative) and S. aureus (gram positive) bacteria. The untreated and the plasma treated silk/AMOX/PVA electrospun nanofibers for 1-3 min showed enhanced viability of primary adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) growth on them and much less hemolysis activity (< 5%). The in vitro biocompatibility of various electrospun nanofibers were further corroborated by live/dead imaging and cytoskeletal architecture assessment demonstrating enhanced cell adhesion and spreading on the plasma treated nanofibers for 1-3 min. The findings of the present study suggest that the silk/AMOX/PVA electrospun nanofibers with plasma treatment (1-3 min) due to their enhanced drug release ability and biocompatibility can be used as potential wound dressing applications.

Simple and Scalable Chemical Surface Patterning via Direct Deposition from Immobilized Plasma Filaments in a Dielectric Barrier Discharge.

Project description:In this work, immobilization of the often unwanted filaments in dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) is achieved and used for one-step deposition of patterned coatings. By texturing one of the dielectric surfaces, a discharge containing stationary plasma filaments is ignited in a mix of argon and propargyl methacrylate (PMA) in a reactor operating at atmospheric pressure. From PMA, hydrophobic and hydrophilic chemical and topographical contrasts at sub-millimeter scale are obtained on silicon and glass substrates. Chemical and physical characterizations of the samples are performed by micrometer-scale X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared imaging and by water contact angle and profilometry, respectively. From the latter and additional information from high-speed imaging of the plasma phase and electrical measurements, it is suggested that filaments, denser in energetic species, lead to higher deposition rate with higher fragmentation of the precursor, while surface discharges igniting outwards the filaments are leading to smoother and slower deposition. This work opens a new route for a one-step large-area chemical and morphological patterning of surfaces at sub-millimeter scales. Moreover, the possibility to separately deposit coatings from filaments and the surrounding plasma phase can be helpful to better understand the processes occurring during plasma polymerization in filamentary DBD.

Numerical Investigations on Methane-Air Nanosecond Pulsed Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma-Assisted Combustion.

Project description:Plasma-assisted combustion is a promising approach to achieve fast ignition and highly efficient combustion. In this work, methane-air nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge plasma-assisted combustion is numerically investigated by combining a homemade plasma model with the combustion model of software CHEMKIN-PRO. Effects of varying applied voltage amplitudes on the characteristic parameters of the plasma-assisted planar shear flow combustion as well as the reaction pathway maps of not only the nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge plasma but also the combustions without and with plasma assistance are systematically illustrated and analyzed. The simulation results indicate that under the combined action of increasing electric field intensity and increasing charged particle densities, the peak value of the discharge current density increases, and the peak time of the discharge current density is brought forward with the increase of the applied voltage amplitude. The temperature reaches its peak value earlier in the methane-air combustion with plasma assistance than without plasma assistance. The maximum temperature reduces to around 1900 K when the applied voltage amplitude is higher than 11 kV. There are emerging pathways to generate hydrocarbons C2H4 and C2H2 in the plasma-assisted combustion, the reactions of CH4 on CH and C2H on H2, respectively. The reactions involving active species such as H play a significant role in the plasma-assisted combustion, which causes an obvious decrease in the densities of these active species with plasma assistance.

Dielectric Barrier Plasma Discharge Exsolution of Nanoparticles at Room Temperature and Atmospheric Pressure.

Project description:Exsolution of metal nanoparticles (NPs) on perovskite oxides has been demonstrated as a reliable strategy for producing catalyst-support systems. Conventional exsolution requires high temperatures for long periods of time, limiting the selection of support materials. Plasma direct exsolution is reported at room temperature and atmospheric pressure of Ni NPs from a model A-site deficient perovskite oxide (La0.43Ca0.37Ni0.06Ti0.94O2.955). Plasma exsolution is carried out within minutes (up to 15 min) using a dielectric barrier discharge configuration both with He-only gas as well as with He/H2 gas mixtures, yielding small NPs (<30 nm diameter). To prove the practical utility of exsolved NPs, various experiments aimed at assessing their catalytic performance for methanation from synthesis gas, CO, and CH4 oxidation are carried out. Low-temperature and atmospheric pressure plasma exsolution are successfully demonstrated and suggest that this approach could contribute to the practical deployment of exsolution-based stable catalyst systems.

Antibiotic-Resistant and Non-Resistant Bacteria Display Similar Susceptibility to Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma.

Project description:Here, we examined whether antibiotic-resistant and non-resistant bacteria show a differential susceptibility to plasma treatment. Escherichia coli DH5α were transformed with pPRO-EX-HT-CAT, which encodes an ampicillin resistance gene and chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) gene, and then treated with a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma torch. Plasma treatment reduced the viable cell count of E. coli after transformation/selection and further cultured in ampicillin-containing and ampicillin-free medium. However, there was no significant difference in viable cell count between the transformed and untransformed E. coli after 1 min- and 2 min-plasma treatment. Furthermore, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and acetyltransferase activity assay showed that the CAT activity was reduced after plasma treatment in both transformed and selected E. coli grown in ampicillin-containing or ampicillin-free medium. Loss of lipopolysaccharide and DNA damage caused by plasma treatment were confirmed by a Limulus test and polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Taken together, these findings suggest the plasma acts to degrade components of the bacteria and is therefore unlikely to display a differential affect against antibiotic-resistant and non-resistant bacteria. Therefore, the plasma method may be useful in eliminating bacteria that are recalcitrant to conventional antibiotic therapy.

Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Jet (DBDjet) Processed Reduced Graphene Oxide/Polypyrrole/Chitosan Nanocomposite Supercapacitors.

Project description:Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and/or polypyrrole (PPy) are mixed with chitosan (CS) binder materials for screen-printing supercapacitors (SCs) on arc atmospheric-pressure plasma jet (APPJ)-treated carbon cloth. The performance of gel-electrolyte rGO/CS, PPy/CS, and rGO/PPy/CS SCs processed by a dielectric barrier discharge plasma jet (DBDjet) was assessed and compared. DBDjet processing improved the hydrophilicity of these three nanocomposite electrode materials. Electrochemical measurements including electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and galvanostatic charging-discharging (GCD) were used to evaluate the performance of the three types of SCs. The Trasatti method was used to evaluate the electric-double layer capacitance (EDLC) and pseudocapacitance (PC) of the capacitance. The energy and power density of the three types of SCs were illustrated and compared using Ragone plots. Our experiments verify that, with the same weight of active materials, the combined use of rGO and PPy in SCs can significantly increase the capacitance and improve the operation stability.

Non-catalytic glycerol dehydrogenation to dihydroxyacetone using needle-in-tube dielectric barrier discharge plasma.

Project description:Glycerol, a by-product of biodiesel production, could be converted into various value-added products. This work focuses on its dehydrogenation to dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is mainly used in the cosmetics industry. While several methods have been employed for DHA production, some necessitate catalysts and involve harsh reaction conditions as well as long reaction times. A needle-in-tube type dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma technique for catalyst-free and environmentally-friendly glycerol conversion into DHA via dehydrogenation process was investigated using 0.1 M glycerol dissolved in deionized (DI) water at ambient temperature and pressure. The optimal condition was 60 W input power, 5 mm gap distance between the end of the needle and the liquid surface, and 0.5 L/min He flow rate. The highest DHA yield of 29.3% was obtained at 3 h with a DHA selectivity of 51.6% and glycerol conversion of 56.9%. Although the system allowed over 80% of glycerol to transform after 5 h, the DHA yield decreased after 3 h because the DHA product could further react with the reactive species in the plasma. The catalyst-free DBD plasma technique offers a simple and environmentally conscious method for DHA production via the dehydrogenation of glycerol.

Characteristics of a Rollable Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma and Its Effects on Spinach-Seed Germination.

Project description:We investigated the characteristics of a rollable dielectric barrier discharge (RDBD) and evaluate its effects on seed germination rate and water uptake. The RDBD source was composed of a polyimide substrate and copper electrode, and it was mounted in a rolled-up structure for omnidirectional and uniform treatment of seeds with flowing synthetic air gas. The rotational and vibrational temperatures were measured to be 342 K and 2860 K, respectively, using optical emission spectroscopy. The chemical species analysis via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and 0D chemical simulation showed that O3 production was dominant and NOx production was restrained at the given temperatures. The water uptake and germination rate of spinach seeds by 5 min treatment of RDBD was increased by 10% and 15%, respectively, and the standard error of germination was reduced by 4% in comparison with the controls. RDBD enables an important step forward in non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma agriculture for omnidirectional seed treatment.

Structural and functional analysis of lysozyme after treatment with dielectric barrier discharge plasma and atmospheric pressure plasma jet.

Project description:The variation in the biological function of proteins plays an important role in plasma medicine and sterilization. Several non-thermal plasma sources with different feeding gases are used worldwide for plasma treatment, including dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and atmospheric-pressure plasma jet (APPJ) as the most commonly used sources. Therefore, in the present work, we used both DBD and APPJ plasma sources with N2 and air as feeding gases to evaluate the effects on the structural, thermodynamic, and activity changes of enzymes. In the current work, we used lysozyme as a model enzyme and verified the structural changes using circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence, and X-ray crystallography. In addition, we investigated the lysozyme thermodynamics using CD thermal analysis and changes in the B-factor from X-ray crystallography. The results showed that lysozyme activity decreased after the plasma treatment. From these analyses, we concluded that N2-feeding gas plasma disturbs the structure and activity of lysozyme more than Air feeding gas plasma in our experimental studies. This study provides novel fundamental information on the changes to enzymes upon plasma treatment, which has been absent from the literature until now.

Electrolytic plasma processing-an innovative treatment for surface modification of 304 stainless steel.

Project description:There is widespread attention to surface profile and modification of 304 stainless steel for research development and application. Here, a successful electrolytic plasma processing (EPP) technique has been developed for both surface pretreatment and coating deposition of 304 stainless steel. Representative images confirm that the number of the pits increases and the ravines gradually disappear on the steel pretreated by EPP with the increase of processing time and applied voltage. Moreover, there is an obvious enhancement in surface roughness of 304 stainless steel after EPP pretreatment. In the case of coating deposition, the further EPP modification conducted on the pretreated sample offers a simple and effective technique for the production of zinc coatings having the features of full coverage and homogeneous distribution. The results show that a zinc coating with a thickness of approximately 0.5 μm can be obtained on the 304 stainless steel by means of EPP for only 60 s.
