High-strength lignin-based carbon fibers via a low-energy method.

ABSTRACT: Bio-renewable carbon fibers are fabricated and employed as high-strength composite materials in many fields. In this work, a facile and low energy consumption method was developed to fabricate high-strength lignin-based carbon fibers. Using iodine treatment, the thermodynamic stability of the lignin-based precursor fibers increased significantly, and thus energy consumption during the preparation of the carbon fibers was reduced. The influence of the iodine treatment on fibers was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, tension testing, etc. The resulting iodine lignin-based carbon fibers had better tensile strength (89 MPa) than that of PAN carbon fibers produced by electrospinning technology.

Continuously processing waste lignin into high-value carbon nanotube fibers.

Project description:High value utilization of renewable biomass materials is of great significance to the sustainable development of human beings. For example, because biomass contains large amounts of carbon, they are ideal candidates for the preparation of carbon nanotube fibers. However, continuous preparation of such fibers using biomass as carbon source remains a huge challenge due to the complex chemical structure of the precursors. Here, we realize continuous preparation of high-performance carbon nanotube fibers from lignin by solvent dispersion, high-temperature pyrolysis, catalytic synthesis, and assembly. The fibers exhibit a tensile strength of 1.33 GPa and an electrical conductivity of 1.19 × 105 S m-1, superior to that of most biomass-derived carbon materials to date. More importantly, we achieve continuous production rate of 120 m h-1. Our preparation method is extendable to other biomass materials and will greatly promote the high value application of biomass in a wide range of fields.

Bio-cleaning improves the mechanical properties of lignin-based carbon fibers.

Project description:Production of carbon fibers (CF) using renewable precursors has gained importance particularly in the last decade to reduce the dependency on conventional petroleum-based precursors. However, pre-treatment of these renewable precursors is still similar to that of conventional ones. Little work is put into greener pre-treatments and their effects on the end products. This work focuses on the use of bio-cleaned lignin as a green precursor to produce CF by electrospinning. Bio-cleaned kraft lignin A (Bio-KLA) and uncleaned kraft lignin A (KLA) were used to explore the effect of bio-cleaning on the diameter and mechanical properties of lignin fibers and CF. The effect of electric field, lignin-to-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) ratio and PEO molecular weight (MW) were evaluated by 33 factorial design using Design of Experiment (DOE). The electrospinning process parameters were optimized to obtain a balance between high elastic modulus and small fiber diameter. The model predicted optimized conditions were 50 kV m-1 electric field, 95/5 lignin-to-PEO ratio and 1000 kDa MW of PEO. When compared to KLA, Bio-KLA CFs showed a 2.7-fold increase in elastic modulus, 2-fold increase in tensile strength and 30% decrease in fiber diameter under the same optimum conditions. The results clearly show that bio-cleaning improved the mechanical properties of lignin derived CF.

High-Density Lignin-Derived Carbon Nanofiber Supercapacitors with Enhanced Volumetric Energy Density.

Project description:Supercapacitors are increasingly used in short-distance electric transportation due to their long lifetime (≈15 years) and fast charging capability (>10 A g-1 ). To improve their market penetration, while minimizing onboard weight and maximizing space-efficiency, materials costs must be reduced (<10 $ kg-1 ) and the volumetric energy-density increased (>8 Wh L-1 ). Carbon nanofibers display good gravimetric capacitance, yet their marketability is hindered by their low density (0.05-0.1 g cm-3 ). Here, the authors increase the packing density of low-cost, free-standing carbon nanofiber mats (from 0.1 to 0.6 g cm-3 ) through uniaxial compression. X-ray computed tomography reveals that densification occurs by reducing the inter-fiber pore size (from 1-5 µm to 0.2-0.5 µm), which are not involved in double-layer capacitance. The improved packing density is directly proportional to the volumetric performances of the device, which reaches a volumetric capacitance of 130 F cm-3 and energy density of 6 Wh L-1 at 0.1 A g-1 using a loading of 3 mg cm-2 . The results outperform most commercial and lab-scale porous carbons synthesized from bioresources (50-100 F cm-3 , 1-3 Wh L-1 using 10 mg cm-2 ) and contribute to the scalable design of sustainable electrodes with minimal 'dead volume' for efficient supercapacitors.

Direct spinning and densification method for high-performance carbon nanotube fibers.

Project description:Developing methods to assemble nanomaterials into macroscopic scaffolds is of critical significance at the current stage of nanotechnology. However, the complications of the fabrication methods impede the widespread usages of newly developed materials even with the superior properties in many cases. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of a highly-efficient and potentially-continuous fiber-spinning method to produce high-performance carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber (CNTF). The processing time is <1 min from synthesis of CNTs to fabrication of highly densified and aligned CNTFs. CNTFs that are fabricated by the developed spinning method are ultra-lightweight, strong (specific tensile strength = 4.08 ± 0.25 Ntex-1), stiff (specific tensile modulus = 187.5 ± 7.4 Ntex-1), electrically conductive (2,270 S m2kg-1), and highly flexible (knot efficiency = 48 ± 15%), so they are suitable for various high-value fabric-based applications.

High-Strength GO/PA66 Nanocomposite Fibers via In Situ Precipitation and Polymerization.

Project description:The uniform dispersion of graphene oxide (GO) and strong interfacial bonding are the key factors in achieving the high mechanical strength of GO/polymer composites. It is still challenging to prepare GO/PA66 composites with uniform GO dispersion by the in situ polymerization method. In this paper, we prepare GO/PA66 salt nanocomposite by in situ precipitating PA66 salt with GO in ethanol. The GO/PA66 nanocomposite fibers are then fabricated using the as-prepared GO/PA66 salt by in situ polymerizing and melt spinning. By tuning the GO content, the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the GO/PA66 fibers are increased from 265 ± 18 to 710 ± 14 MPa (containing 0.3 wt% GO) and from 1.1 ± 0.08 to 3.8 ± 0.19 GPa (containing 0.5 wt% GO), respectively. The remarkable improvements are attributed to the uniform dispersion of GO in the GO/PA66 salt nanocomposite via ionic bonding and hydrogen bonding in the in situ precipitation process, and the covalent interfacial bonding between the GO and PA66 during the in situ polymerization process. This work sheds light on the easy fabrication of high-performance PA66-based nanocomposites.

Improving Processing and Performance of Pure Lignin Carbon Fibers through Hardwood and Herbaceous Lignin Blends.

Project description:Lignin/lignin blends were used to improve fiber spinning, stabilization rates, and properties of lignin-based carbon fibers. Organosolv lignin from Alamo switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) and yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) were used as blends for making lignin-based carbon fibers. Different ratios of yellow poplar:switchgrass lignin blends were prepared (50:50, 75:25, and 85:15 w/w). Chemical composition and thermal properties of lignin samples were determined. Thermal properties of lignins were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Thermal analysis confirmed switchgrass and yellow poplar lignin form miscible blends, as a single glass transition was observed. Lignin fibers were produced via melt-spinning by twin-screw extrusion. Lignin fibers were thermostabilized at different rates and subsequently carbonized. Spinnability of switchgrass lignin markedly improved by blending with yellow poplar lignin. On the other hand, switchgrass lignin significantly improved thermostabilization performance of yellow poplar fibers, preventing fusion of fibers during fast stabilization and improving mechanical properties of fibers. These results suggest a route towards a 100% renewable carbon fiber with significant decrease in production time and improved mechanical performance.

Fabrication of Ultrafine PPS Fibers with High Strength and Tenacity via Melt Electrospinning.

Project description:Electrospinning (e-spinning) is an emerging technique to prepare ultrafine fibers. Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a high-performance resin which does not dissolve in any solvent at room temperature. Commercial PPS fibers are produced mainly by meltblown or spunbonded process to give fibers ~20 μm in diameter. In this research, an in-house designed melt electrospinning device was used to fabricate ultrafine PPS fibers, and the e-spinning operation conducted under inert gas to keep PPS fibers from oxidizing. Under the optimum e-spinning conditions (3 mm of nozzle diameter, 30 kV of electrostatic voltage, and 9.5 cm of tip-to-collector distance), the as-spun fibers were less than 8.0 μm in diameter. After characterization, the resultant PPS fibers showed uniform diameter and structural stability. Compared with commercial PPS staple fibers, the obtained fibers had a cold crystallization peak and 10 times higher storage modulus, thereby offering better tensile tenacity and more than 400% elongation at break.

Influence of Hardwood Lignin Blending on the Electrical and Mechanical Properties of Cellulose Based Carbon Fibers.

Project description:Carbon fibers (CFs) are fabricated by blending hardwood kraft lignin (HKL) and cellulose. Various compositions of HKL and cellulose in blended solutions are air-gap spun in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIM OAc), resulting in the production of virtually bead-free quality fibers. The synthesized HKL-cellulose fibers are thermostabilized and carbonized to achieve CFs, and consequently their electrical and mechanical properties are evaluated. Remarkably, fibers with the highest lignin content (65%) exhibited an electrical conductivity of approximately 42 S/cm, surpassing that of cellulose (approximately 15 S/cm). Moreover, the same fibers demonstrated significantly improved tensile strength (∼312 MPa), showcasing a 5-fold increase compared to pure cellulose while maintaining lower stiffness. Comprehensive analyses, including Auger electron spectroscopy and wide-angle X-ray scattering, show a heterogeneous skin-core morphology in the fibers revealing a higher degree of preferred orientation of carbon components in the skin compared to the core. The incorporation of lignin in CFs leads to increased graphitization, enhanced tensile strength, and a unique skin-core structure, where the skin's graphitized cellulose and lignin contribute stiffness, while the predominantly lignin-rich core enhances carbon content, electrical conductivity, and strength.

Preparation and Mechanical Behavior of Ultra-High Strength Low-Carbon Steel.

Project description:The low-carbon steel (~0.12 wt%) with complete martensite structure, obtained by quenching, was cold rolled to get the high-strength steel sheets. Then, the mechanical properties of the sheets were measured at different angles to the rolling direction, and the microstructural evolution of low-carbon martensite with cold rolling reduction was observed. The results show that the hardness and the strength gradually increase with increasing rolling reduction, while the elongation and impact toughness obviously decrease. The strength of the sheets with the same rolling reduction are different at the angles of 0°, 45°, and 90° to the rolling direction. The tensile strength (elongation) along the rolling direction is higher than that in the other two directions, but the differences between them are not obvious. When the aging was performed at a low temperature, the strength of the initial martensite and deformed martensite increased with increasing aging time during the early stages of aging, followed by a gradual decrease with further aging. However, the elongation increases with increasing aging time. The change of hardness is consistent with that of strength for the cold-rolled martensite, while the hardness of the initial martensite decreases gradually with increasing aging time.

Novel multifibrillar carbon and oxidation-stable carbon/ceramic hybrid fibers consisting of thousands of individual nanofibers with high tensile strength.

Project description:In this study, multifibrillar carbon and carbon/ceramic (C/SiCON) fibers consisting of thousands of single nanofibers are continuously manufactured. The process starts with electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and PAN/oligosilazane precursors resulting in poorly aligned polymer fibers. Subsequent stretching leads to parallel aligned multifibrillar fibers, which are continuously stabilized and pyrolyzed to C or C/SiCON hybrid fibers. The multifibrillar carbon fibers show a high tensile strength of 911 MPa and Young's modulus of 154 GPa, whereas the multifibrillar C/SiCON fibers initially have only tensile strengths of 407 MPa and Young's modulus of 77 GPa, due to sticking of the nanofibers during the stabilization in air. Additional curing with electron beam radiation, results in a remarkable increase in tensile strength of 707 MPa and Young's modulus of 98 GPa. The good mechanical properties are highlighted by the low linear density of the multifibrillar C/SiCON fibers (~ 1 tex) compared to conventional C and SiC fiber bundles (~ 200 tex). In combination with the large surface area of the fibers better mechanical properties of respective composites with a reduced fiber content can be achieved. In addition, the developed approach offers high potential to produce advanced endless multifibrillar carbon and C/SiCON nanofibers in an industrial scale.
