Copolymerization of CO₂ and epoxides mediated by zinc organyls.

ABSTRACT: Herein we report the copolymerization of CHO with CO₂ in the presence of various zinc compounds R₂Zn (R = Et, Bu, iPr, Cy and Ph). Several zinc organyls proved to be efficient catalysts for this reaction in the absence of water and co-catalyst. Notably, readily available Bu₂Zn reached a TON up to 269 and an initial TOF up to 91 h^-1. The effect of various parameters on the reaction outcome has been investigated. Poly(ether)carbonates with molecular weights up to 79.3 kg mol^-1 and a CO₂ content of up to 97% were obtained. Under standard reaction conditions (100 °C, 2.0 MPa, 16 h) the influence of commonly employed co-catalysts such as PPNCl and TBAB has been investigated in the presence of Et₂Zn (0.5 mol%). The reaction of other epoxides (e.g. propylene and styrene oxide) under these conditions led to no significant conversion or to the formation of the respective cyclic carbonate as the main product.

Multinuclear Zinc-Magnesium Hydroxide Carboxylates: A Predesigned Model System for Copolymerization of CO2 with Epoxides.

Project description:Among numerous catalysts in the ring-opening copolymerization of epoxides with carbon dioxide (CO2), zinc dicarboxylate complexes are the most common type, and in the family of metal-based homogeneous catalysts, zinc and magnesium complexes have attracted widespread attention. We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of a zinc-magnesium benzoate framework templated by the central hydroxide anion with μ3-κ2:κ2:κ2 coordination mode, [ZnMg2(μ3-OH)(O2CPh)5]n (n = 1 or 2). The resulting heterometallic system forms stable Lewis acid-base adducts with tetrahydrofuran (THF) and cyclohexene oxide (CHO), which crystallize as the hexanuclear zinc-magnesium hydroxide carboxylate cluster [ZnMg2(μ3-OH)(O2CPh)5(L)2]2 (L = THF or CHO). Their X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed that the Zn center prefers 4-fold coordination and the Mg centers demonstrated the ability to accommodate higher coordination numbers, and as a result, the heterocyclic molecules are exclusively bonded to 6-fold Mg atoms. The heteronuclear carboxylate aggregates appeared active in the copolymerization reaction at elevated temperatures to produce an alternating poly(cyclohexene carbonate).

All-Polycarbonate Thermoplastic Elastomers Based on Triblock Copolymers Derived from Triethylborane-Mediated Sequential Copolymerization of CO2 with Various Epoxides.

Project description:Various oxirane monomers including alkyl ether or allyl-substituted ones such as 1-butene oxide, 1-hexene oxide, 1-octene oxide, butyl glycidyl ether, allyl glycidyl ether, and 2-ethylhexyl glycidyl ether were anionically copolymerized with CO2 into polycarbonates using onium salts as initiator in the presence of triethylborane. All copolymerizations exhibited a "living" character, and the monomer consumption was monitored by in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The various polycarbonate samples obtained were characterized by 1H NMR, GPC, and differential scanning calorimetry. In a second step, all-polycarbonate triblock copolymers demonstrating elastomeric behavior were obtained in one pot by sequential copolymerization of CO2 with two different epoxides, using a difunctional initiator. 1-Octene oxide was first copolymerized with CO2 to form the central soft poly(octene carbonate) block which was flanked by two external rigid poly(cyclohexene carbonate) blocks obtained through subsequent copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide with CO2. Upon varying the ratio of 1-octene oxide to cyclohexene oxide and their respective ratios to the initiator, three all-polycarbonate triblock samples were prepared with molar masses of about 350 kg/mol and 22, 26, and 29 mol % hard block content, respectively. The resulting triblock copolymers were analyzed using 1H NMR, GPC, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and atomic force microscopy. All three samples demonstrated typical elastomeric behavior characterized by a high elongation at break and ultimate tensile strength in the same range as those of other natural and synthetic rubbers, in particular those used in applications such as tissue engineering.

Zinc Amido-Oxazolinate Catalyzed Ring Opening Copolymerization and Terpolymerization of Maleic Anhydride and Epoxides.

Project description:Ring opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides has become an attractive approach for the synthesis of biodegradable polyesters with various compositions. Encouraged by the efficiency and versatility of a series of amido-oxazolinate zinc complexes, in this study they were shown to be active catalysts for the synthesis of unsaturated polyesters via ROCOP of maleic anhydride and various epoxides. The relative activity of epoxides in these reactions was observed to be styrene oxide > cyclohexene oxide > phenyl glycidyl ether, which could be correlated with the electronic and steric features of the substrate. To provide more structural possibilities for the polyesters, the difference in epoxide reactivity was exploited in an attempt to prepare block terpolymers from one anhydride and two epoxides. Terpolymerization was carried out in one or two steps in a single pot. The thermal characterization by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques suggested that the resulting materials were mostly random terpolymers.

Catalytic Chain Transfer Copolymerization of Propylene Oxide and CO2 using Zinc Glutarate Catalyst.

Project description:Oligo and poly(propylene ether carbonate)-polyols with molecular weights from 0.8 to over 50 kg/mol and with 60-92 mol % carbonate linkages were synthesized by chain transfer copolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO2) and propylene oxide (PO) mediated by zinc glutarate. Online-monitoring of the polymerization revealed that the CTA controlled copolymerization has an induction time which is resulting from reversible catalyst deactivation by the CTA. Latter is neutralized after the first monomer additions. The outcome of the chain transfer reaction is a function of the carbonate content, i. e. CO2 pressure, most likely on account of differences in mobility (diffusion) of the various polymers. Melt viscosities of poly(ether carbonate)diols with a carbonate content between 60 and 92 mol % are reported as function of the molecular weight, showing that the mobility is higher when the ether content is higher. The procedure of PO/CO2 catalytic chain copolymerization allows tailoring the glass temperature and viscosity.

Vinyl ethers and epoxides photoinduced copolymerization with perfluoropolyalkylether monomers.

Project description:New perfluoropolyalkylether (PFPAE) monomers, chain extended with different alkyl groups and functionalized with vinyl ether or epoxide end-groups, were employed, together with trimethylolpropane trivinyl ether or trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether, to produce fluorinated copolymers. The photoinduced cationic polymerization was investigated, and the PFPAE-based copolymer properties were thoroughly characterized. Interesting surface properties and two different values of refractive index were observed: thus, these fluorinated copolymers can be suitable materials for the manufacture of self-cleaning coatings and optical waveguides.

Alternating Copolymerization of Epoxides and Anhydrides Catalyzed by Aluminum Complexes.

Project description:The optimization of an organoaluminum catalytic system for the copolymerization of epoxides and anhydrides is presented. For this purpose, the influence of different variables in the process, such as catalysts, cocatalyst, solvent, or substrates, has been analyzed. Kinetic studies, a proposal for the catalytic mechanism, and full characterization of the copolymers obtained are also discussed. Finally, a new copolymer, poly(limonene succinate), obtained by the optimized catalytic system is reported.

Novel porous organocatalysts for cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides.

Project description:Three classes of organosilicas (DMO, OMOs and PMOs) containing immobilized multi-hydroxyl bis-(quaternary ammonium) iodide salts were prepared and tested in the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides. Owing to its higher surface area, pore volume and optimum nucleophilicity of the iodide ion, OMO-2 with two hydroxyl groups was found to be the most active catalyst. For substrates that are easy to activate such as propylene oxide, 1,2-epoxybutane and epichlorohydrin, excellent yields and selectivities were obtained under mild reaction conditions (0.5 MPa CO2, 50 °C and 10-15 h). Moreover, OMO-2 showed very good catalytic properties (yield ≥ 93% and selectivity ≥ 98%), and excellent chemical and textural stability in the synthesis of 1,2-butylene carbonate over 5 cycles.

Copolymerization of epoxides with cyclic anhydrides catalyzed by dinuclear cobalt complexes.

Project description:The alternating copolymerization of epoxides with cyclic anhydrides (CAs) is a highly diverse synthetic method for polyesters as the polymers' architectures and properties can be easily controlled depending on the combination of two monomers. Thus, a variety of catalyst designs has been reported to prepare the desired copolymers efficiently. We herein report dinuclear cobalt-salen complexes with a benzene ring as a linker and their activities in copolymerization reactions. The dinuclear cobalt complexes showed a higher catalytic activity for the copolymerization of propylene oxide with phthalic anhydride than the corresponding mononuclear cobalt-salen complex and achieved one of the highest turnover frequencies ever reported. A variety of epoxides and CAs were also found to be copolymerized successfully by the dinuclear cobalt complex with a high catalytic activity.

Reactivity ratios, and mechanistic insight for anionic ring-opening copolymerization of epoxides.

Project description:Reactivity ratios were evaluated for anionic ring-opening copolymerizations of ethylene oxide (EO) with either allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) or ethylene glycol vinyl glycidyl ether (EGVGE) using a benzyl alkoxide initiator. The chemical shift for the benzylic protons of the initiator, as measured by (1)H NMR spectroscopy, were observed to be sensitive to the sequence of the first two monomers added to the initiator during polymer growth. Using a simple kinetic model for initiation and the first propagation step, reactivity ratios for the copolymerization of AGE and EGVGE with EO could be determined by analysis of the (1)H NMR spectroscopy for the resulting copolymer. For the copolymerization between EO and AGE, the reactivity ratios were determined to be r(AGE) = 1.31 ± 0.26 and r(EO) = 0.54 ± 0.03, while for EO and EGVGE, the reactivity ratios were r(EGVGE) = 3.50 ± 0.90 and r(EO) = 0.32 ± 0.10. These ratios were consistent with the compositional drift observed in the copolymerization between EO and EGVGE, with EGVGE being consumed early in the copolymerization. These experimental results, combined with density functional calculations, allowed a mechanism for oxyanionic ring-opening polymerization that begins with coordination of the Lewis-basic epoxide to the cation to be proposed. The calculated transition-state energies agree qualitatively with the observed relative rates for polymerization.

Catalytic Ring-Opening Copolymerization of Fatty Acid Epoxides: Access to Functional Biopolyesters.

Project description:Fatty acid epoxies serve as valuable starting materials for the development of bio-based polyesters. Here we present a new and efficient catalytic process that allows for the copolymerization of fatty acid-based epoxides and various cyclic anhydrides under attractive process conditions affording functional polyesters. The degree of functionalization and the nature of the polymer backbone can be modulated via monomer design. Postpolymerization cross-linking processes were examined to create rigid macromolecular networks that build on orthogonal polyester functionality, creating possible entries for materials with switchable thermal and mechanical properties.
