Preparation of PSF/FEP mixed matrix membrane with super hydrophobic surface for efficient water-in-oil emulsion separation.

ABSTRACT: Polysulfone (PSF)/fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with super hydrophobic surface were successfully fabricated via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The effects of FEP content on the morphology, roughness, wettability, pore size, and mechanical property of PSF/FEP MMMs were characterized by scanning electron microscope, confocal microscopy, contact angle goniometer, mercury porosimetry, and tensile testing instrument, respectively. When the FEP content was 9 wt%, the average roughness of M-4 reached 0.712 μm. Meanwhile, the water contact angle (CA) and the water sliding angle (SA) was 153.3° and 6.1°, respectively. M-4 showed super hydrophobicity with a micro- and nanoscale structure surface. Then, M-4 was used for separating of water-in-oil emulsion, showing high separation efficiency for water-in-kerosene and water-in-diesel emulsions of 99.79% and 99.47%, respectively. The flux and separation efficiency changed slightly after 10 cycles. Therefore, this study indicated that the obtained PSF/FEP MMM with super hydrophobic surface could be used for efficient water-in-oil emulsion separation.

Project description:Designing and synthesizing materials with smart hydrophobicity against an external magnetic field for efficient oil/water separation is of great importance due to the increasing problems caused by oil pollution. Here, the nanocomposites were fabricated based on graphene and different iron oxides exhibit smart hydrophobicity against an external magnetic field and they are in powder form eliminating the requirement for a substrate employing a facile and echo friendly method. The results prove that autoclaving of graphene leads to its ferromagnetic property; then it is attached to iron oxides by magnetic attraction and a nanocomposite is produced. The magnetic property of the resulting nanocomposite is higher than the magnetic property of its individual components. In addition, following nanocomposite formation, its hydrophobicity and surface area also change. FESEM images were taken from the nanocomposites to study their surface morphology, and EDS-MAP analysis to observe the elemental distribution uniformity of the nanocomposites. Also, to measure the surface area and pore size, BET analysis has been performed on pure materials and graphene-black iron oxide nanocomposite (graphene@black iron oxide). The results show that the specific surface area of black iron oxide increases after being composited with graphene dispersed at 5000 rpm. Indeed, graphene forms a composite by binding to iron oxide, and therefore, its specific surface area increases compared to iron oxide and graphene alone. These results show an increase in oil sorption and better separation of oil from water by the prepared nanocomposite. Also, to measure the magnetic properties of pure materials, graphene@black iron oxide, and ferromagnetic graphene at 3000 and 5000 rpm, the Vibrating Sample Magnetometer analysis has been performed. The results have proven that the nanocomposite powder prepared by a simple method obtained from cost-effective and available materials is hydrophobic and becomes more hydrophobic by applying an external magnetic field. Due to the ease with which oil can be readily removed from the nanocomposite by eliminating the external magnetic field, this nanocomposite is an excellent choice for the separation of oil from water.

Project description:ImportanceCritically ill pediatric patients often require parenteral nutrition (PN) in the intensive care unit (ICU). Literature suggests mixed lipid emulsions (LE) with soybean oil reduction strategies may improve outcomes.ObjectiveTo examine the association of a hospital-wide switch to a mixed-lipid formula (4-OLE) with pediatric outcomes.Design, setting, and participantsRetrospective cohort study at a large US academic referral center. Pediatric patients aged 1 month to 17 years requiring parenteral nutrition from May 2016 to September 2019 were included. Data were analyzed from October 2020 to February 2023.ExposureIn 2017, Duke University Health System fully converted to a soybean oil/MCT/olive/fish oil lipid (4-OLE) from pure soybean oil-based LE in pediatric patients. Pediatric patients before the change (Intralipid [IL] group) were compared with patients after (4-OLE group).Main outcomes and measuresClinical outcomes were compared between treatment periods via multivariable regression models. The primary outcome was hospital length of stay (LOS). Fourteen secondary outcomes included hospital mortality of any cause, 30-day or 90-day readmission, pneumonia, urinary tract infections (UTIs), total caloric delivery, and liver function tests (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, and total bilirubin).ResultsA total of 684 children dependent on PN were identified (342 were critically ill), with 30% (206 children) in the preswitch (IL) period and 70% (478 children) in the postswitch (4-OLE) period; 123 were male (59.7%). In comparing IL vs 4-OLE, there was a significant difference in median (IQR) age (4.0 [1.2-13.0] vs 3.0 [0.8-9.0] years, respectively; P = .04), without difference in body mass index or baseline comorbidities except for significant differences in cancer diagnosis (26 patients in the IL group [12.6%] vs 29 patients in the 4-OLE group [6.1%]; P = .004) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (24 patients in the IL group [11.7%] vs 30 patients in the 4-OLE group [6.3%]; P = .02). In the all children cohort, 4-OLE was associated with shorter hospital LOS (IRR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.05-0.78), and reduced UTI risk (OR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.18-0.64). In the ICU cohort, 4-OLE was associated with shorter hospital LOS (IRR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.78-0.83), and reduced UTI risk (OR, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.11-0.51). Other secondary outcomes were not significant.Conclusions and relevanceIn this observational study of clinical outcomes among children dependent on PN, a switch to 4-OLE in a large academic hospital was associated with a significant decrease in hospital LOS in ICU and non-ICU patients. These findings suggest switching to a soy-LE sparing strategy using 4-OLE is feasible, safe, and associated with improved clinical outcomes in pediatric PN patients.
