Bronsted acidic ionic liquids for cellulose hydrolysis in an aqueous medium: structural effects on acidity and glucose yield.

ABSTRACT: The conversion of cellulose into valuable chemicals has attracted much attention, due to the concern about depletion of fossil fuels. The hydrolysis of cellulose is a key step in this conversion, for which Brønsted acidic ionic liquids (BAILs) have been considered promising acid catalysts. In this study, using BAILs with various structures, their acidic catalytic activity for cellulose hydrolysis assisted by microwave irradiation was assessed using the Hammett acidity function (H ₀) and theoretical calculations. The glucose yields exceeded 10% when the H ₀ values of the BAIL aqueous solutions were below 1.5. The highest glucose yield was about 36% in 1-(1-octyl-3-imidazolio)propane-3-sulfonate (Oimps)/sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) aqueous solution. A long alkyl side chain on the imidazolium cation, which increased the hydrophobicity of the BAILs, enhanced the glucose yield.

Green Bronsted acid ionic liquids as novel corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in acidic medium.

Project description:New ionic liquids with multiple Brönsted acid sites were synthesized in ≥98% yield, and their inhibiting properties for the corrosion of carbon steel in 0.5 M HCl solution had been evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization and weight loss method, finally the possible inhibiting mechanism was proposed according to UV-visible spectroscopic measurements and surface analysis including SEM and XPS techniques. The designed cation structure of Brönsted acid ionic liquids (BAILs), with one phenyl and two imidazolium rings, makes them good mixed-type inhibitors via the adsorption of BAILs on the steel surface to suppress both anodic and cathodic processes, obeying Langmuir adsorption isotherm. As potential acid catalysts, BAILs show nice corrosion inhibiting performance in acidic medium regardless of their Brönsted acidity, which is of great significance to enlarge the industry applications of BAILs.

Isobutane/2-butene alkylation catalyzed by Bronsted-Lewis acidic ionic liquids.

Project description:The alkylation reaction of isobutane with 2-butene to yield C8-alkylates was performed using Brønsted-Lewis acidic ionic liquids (ILs) comprising various metal chlorides (ZnCl2, FeCl2, FeCl3, CuCl2, CuCl, and AlCl3) on the anion. IL 1-(3-sulfonic acid)-propyl-3-methylimidazolium chlorozincinate [HO3S-(CH2)3-mim]Cl-ZnCl2 (x=0.67) exhibited outstanding catalytic performance, which is attributed to the appropriate acidity, the synergistic effect originating from its double acidic sites and the promoting effect of water on the formation and transfer of protons. The Lewis acidic strength of IL played an important role in improving IL catalytic performance. A 100% conversion of 2-butene with 85.8% selectivity for C8-alkylate was obtained under mild reaction conditions. The IL reusability was good because its alkyl sulfonic acid group being tethered covalently, its anion [Zn2Cl5]- inertia to the active hydrogen, and its insolubility in the product. IL [HO3S-(CH2)3-mim]Cl-ZnCl2 had potential applicability in the benzene alkylation reaction with olefins and halohydrocarbons.

Synthesis and Properties of Magnetic Aryl-Imidazolium Ionic Liquids with Dual Bronsted/Lewis Acidity.

Project description:A series of unique tunable aryl-imidazolium magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) with dual acidity that contain both Brønsted and Lewis acidic sites (abbreviated as B-L MILs) were synthesized and characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. Physical properties, such as thermal properties, magnetic susceptibility, and Brønsted and Lewis acidity, were measured. These properties were found to depend on the cation structure. These B-L MILs had good solubility in many organic solvents, good thermal stability, and low melting points, and exhibited magnet-like behavior. For these B-L MILs, the Brønsted acidity was measured using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), and the Lewis acidity was measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that B-L MILs with an electron-withdrawing group in the aryl-imidazolium moiety had higher Brønsted acidity, whereas those with an electron-donating group had higher Lewis acidity. This type of ionic liquid, with both Brønsted and Lewis acidic sites, is expected to be a useful solvent and catalyst for organic reactions.

Deep Oxidative Desulfurization of Fuels in the Presence of Bronsted Acidic Polyoxometalate-Based Ionic Liquids.

Project description:Polyoxometalate-based ionic liquid hybrid materials with a pyridinium cation, containing Brönsted acid sites, were synthesized and used as catalysts for the oxidation of model and real diesel fuels. Keggin-type polyoxometalates with the formulae [PMo12O40]3-, [PVMo11O40]4-, [PV2Mo10O40]4-, [PW12O40]3- were used as anions. It was shown that increasing the acid site strength leads to an increase of dibenzothiophene conversion to the corresponding sulfone. The best results were obtained in the presence of a catalyst, containing a nicotinic acid derivative as cation and phosphomolybdate as anion. The main factors affecting the process consisting of catalyst dosage, temperature, reaction time, oxidant dosage were investigated in detail. Under optimal conditions full oxidation of dibenzothiophene and more than a 90% desulfurization degree of real diesel fuel (initial sulfur content of 2050 ppm) were obtained (the oxidation conditions: NK-1 catalyst, molar ratio H2O2:S 10:1, molar ratio S:Mo 8:1, 1 mL MeCN, 70 °C, 1 h). The synthesized catalysts could be used five times with a slight decrease in activity.

Catalytic preparation of levulinic acid from cellobiose via Bronsted-Lewis acidic ionic liquids functional catalysts.

Project description:Brønsted-Lewis acidic ionic liquids (ILs) were applied to catalyze cellobiose to prepare levulinic acid (LA) in one pot under hydrothermal conditions. Under the optimum conditions, the highest LA yield of 67.51% was obtained when low [HO3S-(CH2)3-mim]Cl-FeCl3 (molar fraction of FeCl3 x = 0.60) was used. This indicated the Brønsted-Lewis acidic ILs played an active role in the conversion of cellobiose to LA. The catalytic mechanism of ILs had been established, disclosing that the Brønsted-Lewis acidic ILs had the catalytic synergistic effect originating from its double acid sites. During the reaction process, the Lewis acid sites improved the isomerization of glucose to fructose, then the Brønsted and Lewis acid sites simultaneously enhanced the dehydration of fructose to produce hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which was propitious to the synthesize LA with high yield. In addition, LA could be easily extracted by methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), and the ILs could retain its basic activity after 5 cycles. The solid residues were characterized using SEM, FT-IR and TG-DTG spectroscopy. It was the conclusion that a large amount of humins were produced during the cellobiose conversion process. In this reaction, the ILs not only overcomes the problems of the conventional catalyst, but also completes the reaction-separation integration and the recycling of the catalyst. This paper provided an important theoretical basis for the application of ILs in the field of biomass.

Free N-heterocyclic carbenes from Bronsted acidic ionic liquids: Direct detection by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Project description:RationaleThe occurrence of N-heterocyclic carbenes in imidazolium-based ionic liquids has long been discussed, but no spectroscopic evidence has been reported yet due to their transient nature. The insertion of an ionizable acid group into the cation scaffold of an ionic liquid which acts as a charge tag allows for the direct detection of free carbenes by mass spectrometry.MethodsThree different Brønsted acidic ionic liquids were synthesized: 1-methyl-3-carboxymethylimidazolium chloride (MAICl), 1-methyl-3-carboxymethylimidazolium acetate (MAIAc) and the corresponding 2-(3-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium-1-yl)acetate zwitterion (MAI - H). The speciation of these compounds was then analysed by electrospray ionization ion-trap mass spectrometry in the negative ion mode.ResultsThe C2-H deprotonation of the imidazolium cation leading to the formation of the corresponding carbene is highly affected by the basic properties of the counter-anion. In the case of MAICl and MAI - H ionic liquids, no charged species corresponding to the free N-heterocyclic carbene was detected. On the contrary, in the presence of a sufficiently basic anion, such as acetate of MAIAc ionic liquid, an intense signal related to the free carbenic species was observed without the addition of an external base.ConclusionsIn situ formation of free N-heterocyclic carbenes from Brønsted acidic ionic liquids was demonstrated, highlighting the crucial role of anion basicity in promoting the C2-H proton abstraction from imidazolium cations with a carboxylic side chain.

Direct Production of Furfural in One-pot Fashion from Raw Biomass Using Bronsted Acidic Ionic Liquids.

Project description:The conversion of raw biomass into C5-sugars and furfural was demonstrated with the one-pot method using Brønsted acidic ionic liquids (BAILs) without any mineral acids or metal halides. Various BAILs were synthesized and characterized using NMR, FT-IR, TGA, and CHNS microanalysis and were used as the catalyst for raw biomass conversion. The remarkably high yield (i.e. 88%) of C5 sugars from bagasse can be obtained using 1-methyl-3(3-sulfopropyl)-imidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([C3SO3HMIM][HSO4]) BAIL catalyst in a water medium. Similarly, the [C3SO3HMIM][HSO4] BAIL also converts the bagasse into furfural with very high yield (73%) in one-pot method using a water/toluene biphasic solvent system.

Mesoporous acidic polymeric ionic liquids as novel solid acids for catalytic hydrolysis of ketoxime reactions.

Project description:In this study, a series of mesoporous acidic polymeric ionic liquids were successfully synthesized and characterized to explore their structures and properties. Examination of catalytic performance using cyclohexanone oxime's maximum conversion were investigated, and the Box-Behnken design was used to achieve the highest hydrolysis conversion. Excellent catalytic activity, structural stability, and an easy recovery feature were all displayed by the Poly(VBS-DVB)HSO4 catalyst. Additionally, a possible reaction pathway involving hydrogen protons was proposed for the present hydrolysis. Moreover, a series of ketoximes were also examined including acetone oxime, butanone oxime, cyclopentanone oxime and acetophenone oxime over Poly(VBS-DVB)HSO4 catalyst. The conversion of ketoxime was not less than 80.44%, and the results also demonstrated excellent catalytic performance. Synthesis of mesoporous acidic polymeric ionic catalysts with good properties would be very important for their applications.

Cellulose hydrolysis using ionic liquids and inorganic acids under dilute conditions: morphological comparison of nanocellulose.

Project description:The preparation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from cellulose extracted from cotton gin motes (CGM) using an ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [BMIm]Cl) under dilute conditions is reported. The concurrent process involves minimal swelling of cellulose with an ionic liquid and hydrolysis of the cellulose initiated by the addition of either phosphoric (H3PO4), hydrochloric (HCl), or sulfuric (H2SO4) acid. The obtained nanocrystals had similar physical properties (e.g. crystallinity) to the counterparts prepared under conventional conditions and exhibited superior thermal properties for sulfate CNCs. Additionally, the obtained CNCs had low surface functionalization, yet were colloidally stable for >90 days, which is a desirable trait for post-functionalization of CNCs. This process represents a general strategy utilizing dilute ionic liquids in the preparation of nanocellulose under mildly acidic conditions.

Alternative probe for the determination of the hydrogen-bond acidity of ionic liquids and their aqueous solutions.

Project description:Although highly relevant to a priori select adequate solvents for a given application, the determination of the hydrogen-bond acidity or proton donor ability of aqueous solutions of ionic liquids is a difficult task due to the poor solubility of the commonly used probes in aqueous media. In this work, we demonstrate the applicability of the pyridine-N-oxide probe to determine the hydrogen-bond acidity of both neat ionic liquids and their aqueous solutions, based on 13C NMR chemical shifts, and the suitability of these values to appraise the ability of ionic liquids to form aqueous two-phase systems.
