On how ancillary ligand substitution affects the charge carrier dynamics in dye-sensitized solar cells.

ABSTRACT: With respect to N3, a champion sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), S3 which contained a phenTz (1,10-phenanthroline 5-tetrazole) ancillary ligand showed outstanding improvements in molar extinction coefficient (ε) from 10 681.8 to 12 954.5 M cm^-1 as well as 0.92% and 0.9% increases in power conversion efficiency (PCE) and incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE), reaching 8.46% and 76.5%, respectively. To find the origin of the high performance of the DSSC based on a phenTz ancillary ligand, transient absorption spectroscopy (TA) was carried out and indicated that the rate of the regeneration reaction is about 100 times faster than the rate of recombination with the dye which is very exciting and surely a good reason to promote the phenTz ligand as a promising ancillary ligand in DSSCs.

Schiff Base Ancillary Ligands in Bis(diimine) Copper(I) Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Project description:Five 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine ligands bearing N-arylmethaniminyl substituents in the 4- and 4'-positions were prepared by Schiff base condensation in which the aryl group is Ph (1), 4-tolyl (2), 4-tBuC6H4 (3), 4-MeOC6H4 (4), and 4-Me2NC6H4 (5). The homoleptic copper(I) complexes [CuL2][PF6] (L = 1-5) were synthesized and characterized, and the single crystal structure of [Cu(1)2][PF6].Et2O was determined. By using the "surfaces-as-ligands, surfaces-as-complexes" (SALSAC) approach, the heteroleptic complexes [Cu(6)(Lancillary)]+ in which 6 is the anchoring ligand ((6,6'-dimethyl-[2,2'-bipyridine]-4,4'-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(phosphonic acid)) and Lancillary = 1-5 were assembled on FTO-TiO2 electrodes and incorporated as dyes into n-type dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Data from triplicate, fully-masked DSCs for each dye revealed that the best-performing sensitizer is [Cu(6)(1)]+, which exhibits photoconversion efficiencies (η) of up to 1.51% compared to 5.74% for the standard reference dye N719. The introduction of the electron-donating MeO and Me2N groups (Lancillary = 4 and 5) is detrimental, leading to a decrease in the short-circuit current densities and external quantum efficiencies of the solar cells. In addition, a significant loss in open-circuit voltage is observed for DSCs sensitized with [Cu(6)(5)]+, which contributes to low values of η for this dye. Comparisons between performances of DSCs containing [Cu(6)(1)]+ and [Cu(6)(4)]+ with those sensitized by analogous dyes lacking the imine bond indicate that the latter prevents efficient electron transfer across the dye.

Effect of the Ancillary Ligand on the Performance of Heteroleptic Cu(I) Diimine Complexes as Dyes in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Project description:A series of heteroleptic Cu(I) diimine complexes with different ancillary ligands and 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dibenzoic acid (dbda) as the anchoring ligand were self-assembled on TiO2 surfaces and used as dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The binding to the TiO2 surface was studied by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for a bromine-containing complex, confirming the complex formation. The performance of all complexes was assessed and rationalized on the basis of their respective ancillary ligand. The DSSC photocurrent-voltage characteristics, incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) spectra, and calculated lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) distributions collectively show a push-pull structural dye design, in which the ancillary ligand exhibits an electron-donating effect that can lead to improved solar cell performance. By analyzing the optical properties of the dyes and their solar cell performance, we can conclude that the presence of ancillary ligands with bulky substituents protects the Cu(I) metal center from solvent coordination constituting a critical factor in the design of efficient Cu(I)-based dyes. Moreover, we have identified some components in the I-/I3 --based electrolyte that causes dissociation of the ancillary ligand, i.e., TiO2 photoelectrode bleaching. Finally, the detailed studies on one of the dyes revealed an electrolyte-dye interaction, leading to a dramatic change of the dye properties when adsorbed on the TiO2 surface.

Ultrafast charge separation dynamics in opaque, operational dye-sensitized solar cells revealed by femtosecond diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.

Project description:Efficient dye-sensitized solar cells are based on highly diffusive mesoscopic layers that render these devices opaque and unsuitable for ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy measurements in transmission mode. We developed a novel sub-200 femtosecond time-resolved diffuse reflectance spectroscopy scheme combined with potentiostatic control to study various solar cells in fully operational condition. We studied performance optimized devices based on liquid redox electrolytes and opaque TiO2 films, as well as other morphologies, such as TiO2 fibers and nanotubes. Charge injection from the Z907 dye in all TiO2 morphologies was observed to take place in the sub-200 fs time scale. The kinetics of electron-hole back recombination has features in the picosecond to nanosecond time scale. This observation is significantly different from what was reported in the literature where the electron-hole back recombination for transparent films of small particles is generally accepted to occur on a longer time scale of microseconds. The kinetics of the ultrafast electron injection remained unchanged for voltages between +500 mV and -690 mV, where the injection yield eventually drops steeply. The primary charge separation in Y123 organic dye based devices was clearly slower occurring in two picoseconds and no kinetic component on the shorter femtosecond time scale was recorded.

Working area effects on the energetic distribution of trap states and charge dynamics of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Project description:Measuring the transient photoelectric signals (photovoltage or photocurrent) after optically perturbing dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) can provide information about electron transport and recombination. Herein, the energetic distribution of trap states in different working areas of DSSCs (0.16 cm2 vs. 1 cm2) and their impacts on charge transport and recombination were investigated by means of time-resolved charge extraction (TRCE), transient photovoltage (TPV) and transient photocurrent (TPC) measurements. The results indicated that increasing the working area deepened the energetic distribution of trap states (i.e., increased the mean characteristic energy k B T 0), which hindered the electron transport within the photoanode, accelerated the electron recombination in high voltage regions, and reduced the charge collection efficiency. All abovementioned are the inherent reasons why the J SC in larger working area cells is significantly smaller than that in smaller area cells (11.58 mA cm-2 vs. 17.17 mA cm-2). More importantly, as the investigation of high-efficiency large area solar cells is currently a promising research topic for new solar cells, we describe the importance of photoanode optimization to achieve high-efficiency DSSCs with large working area by improving charge collection efficiency.

Photoexcited Intramolecular Charge Transfer in Dye Sensitizers: Predictive In Silico Screening for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Devices.

Project description:Efficient photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from donor to acceptor in dye molecules is the functional basis and key property in the working of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). To understand the ICT process in photoexcited dye molecules, we analyze the electronic properties and structural parameters of a chosen set of experimentally synthesized donor-acceptor (D-A) and donor-π-spacer-acceptor (D-π-A) type dye molecules in their ground, excited, and cationic states. The correlation between structural modification and charge redistribution in different parts of the molecule helps to identify the extent of π-conjugation and spatial rearrangement of electron density localization along the molecular skeleton. We find that prominent twisting of several groups and the resulting molecular bond rearrangements in larger parts of the molecule promote efficient donor to acceptor ICT, such as in D-A type ADEKA1 and C275 dyes. Thus, based on the modest computation of structural and electronic properties of dye molecules in their respective ground, excited, and cationic states, we identify the desired structural changes that facilitate tunable intramolecular charge transfer to highlight a simple and direct prescription to screen out probable efficient dye molecules among many samples. Our approach complements recent experimental evidence of capturing the structural view of the excited-state charge transfer in molecules.

Project description:BackgroundDye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have garnered a lot of attention in recent years. The solar energy to power conversion efficiency of a DSSC is influenced by various components of the cell such as the dye, electrolyte, electrodes and additives among others leading to varying experimental configurations. A large number of metal-based and metal-free dye sensitizers have now been reported and tools using such data to indicate new directions for design and development are on the rise.DescriptionDSSCDB, the first of its kind dye-sensitized solar cell database, aims to provide users with up-to-date information from publications on the molecular structures of the dyes, experimental details and reported measurements (efficiencies and spectral properties) and thereby facilitate a comprehensive and critical evaluation of the data. Currently, the DSSCDB contains over 4000 experimental observations spanning multiple dye classes such as triphenylamines, carbazoles, coumarins, phenothiazines, ruthenium and porphyrins.ConclusionThe DSSCDB offers a web-based, comprehensive source of property data for dye sensitized solar cells. Are Alkynyl Spacers in Ancillary Ligands in Heteroleptic Bis(diimine)copper(I) Dyes Beneficial for Dye Performance in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells?

Project description:The syntheses of 4,4'-bis(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (1), 4,4'-bis(4-dimethylaminophenylethynyl)-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (2), 4,4'-bis(4-diphenylaminophenyl)-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (3), and 4,4'-bis(4-diphenylaminophenylethynyl)-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (4) are reported along with the preparations and characterisations of their homoleptic copper(I) complexes [CuL2][PF6] (L = 1-4). The solution absorption spectra of the complexes exhibit ligand-centred absorptions in addition to absorptions in the visible region assigned to a combination of intra-ligand and metal-to-ligand charge-transfer. Heteroleptic [Cu(5)(Lancillary)]+ dyes in which 5 is the anchoring ligand ((6,6'-dimethyl-[2,2'-bipyridine]-4,4'-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(phosphonic acid) and Lancillary = 1-4 have been assembled on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)-TiO2 electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Performance parameters and external quantum efficiency (EQE) spectra of the DSCs (four fully-masked cells for each dye) reveal that the best performing dyes are [Cu(5)(1)]+ and [Cu(5)(3)]+. The alkynyl spacers are not beneficial, leading to a decrease in the short-circuit current density (JSC), confirmed by lower values of EQEmax. Addition of a co-absorbent (n-decylphosphonic acid) to [Cu(5)(1)]+ lead to no significant enhancement of performance for DSCs sensitized with [Cu(5)(1)]+. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been used to investigate the interfaces in DSCs; the analysis shows that more favourable electron injection into TiO2 is observed for sensitizers without the alkynyl spacer and confirms higher JSC values for [Cu(5)(1)]+.

New Oxindole-Bridged Acceptors for Organic Sensitizers: Substitution and Performance Studies in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Project description:New D-π-A configured organic sensitizers featuring halogen-substituted oxindole-bridged acceptor units have been synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells applications. Among fluorine, bromine, and iodine substitution, the cell based on bromine incorporated dye exhibited the highest efficiency. The oxindoles in these sensitizers were found to assist the electron injection through the chelation of their amide carbonyl groups to the TiO2 surface. This study provides an alternate approach for future rational dye design to gain excellent DSSC performance.

Increase of power conversion efficiency in dye-sensitized solar cells through ferroelectric substrate induced charge transport enhancement.

Project description:Ferroelectric functionalized dye-sensitized solar cells were fabricated by using a positively-poled LiNbO3 substrate coated with ITO (ITO-LiNbO3) as a collector electrode and demonstrated enhanced power conversion efficiency. Surface potential properties of TiO2 nanoparticle film coated on the ITO-LiNbO3 (TiO2/ITO-LiNbO3) examined by Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) confirmed that a large electric field (a few 10 V/µm) generated from LiNbO3 can penetrate through the ITO layer and is applied to TiO2 film. This polarization-induced electric field leads to an increased photocurrent density by attracting and promoting electrons to direct transport through the mesoporous TiO2 network toward the collector electrode and a decreased charge recombination by facilitating electrons to pass through fewer boundaries of nanoparticles, resulting in high power conversion efficiency. The power conversion efficiency was enhanced by more than 40% in comparison with that without polarization-induced electric field. Incorporating functional ferroelectrics into photovoltaic cells would be a good strategy in improving photovoltaic performance and is applicable to other types of photovoltaic devices, such as perovskite solar cells.

Assembly, charge-transfer and solar cell performance with porphyrin-C60 on NiO for p-type dye-sensitized solar cells.

Project description:A series of zinc tetraphenylporphyrin photosensitizers furnished with three different anchoring groups, benzoic acid, phenylphosphonate and coumarin-3-carboxylic acid, were prepared using 'click' methodology. All three gave modest performances in liquid junction devices with I3-/I- as the electrolyte. The distinct spectroscopic properties of the porphyrins allowed a detailed investigation of the adsorption behaviour and kinetics for charge transfer at the NiO|porphyrin interface. The adsorption behaviour was modelled using the Langmuir isotherm model and the phosphonate anchoring group was found to have the highest affinity for NiO (6.65 × 104 M-1) and the fastest rate of adsorption (2.46 × 107 cm2 mol-1 min-1). The photocurrent of the p-type dye-sensitized solar cells increased with increasing dye loading and corresponding light harvesting efficiency of the electrodes. Coordinating the zinc to a pyridyl-functionalized fullerene (C60PPy) extended the charge-separated state lifetime from ca 200 ps to 4 ns and a positive improvement in the absorbed photon to current conversion efficiency was observed. Finally, we confirmed the viability of electron transfer from the appended C60PPy to phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, a typical electron transporting layer in organic photovoltaics. This has implications for assembling efficient solid-state tandem solar cells in the future. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'Energy materials for a low carbon future'.
