The one-step preparation of green-emission carbon dots based on the deactivator-reducing reagent synergistic effect and the study on their luminescence mechanism.

ABSTRACT: The preparation of high-quality green-emission carbon dots (g-CDs) has always been the hot spot in the field of nano-materials. This paper reports the synthesis of high-quality g-CDs based on the synergistic effect between the deactivator (polyethyleneimine) and the reducing reagent (citric acid). The emission wavelength and the fluorescence intensity of the prepared CDs are adjustable by controlling the ratio of raw materials and other synthesis parameters, with quantum yields of 22.2% under optimal conditions. The g-CDs can be used as a fluorescent ink without any chemical modification. This paper further proposes the synthesis mechanism as well as the fluorescence mechanism of CDs based on the synergistic effect, laying the foundation of the synthesis and research of CDs.

One-Step Hydrothermal Synthesis of Yellow and Green Emitting Silicon Quantum Dots with Synergistic Effect.

Project description:The concept of synergistic effects has been widely applied in many scientific fields such as in biomedical science and material chemistry, and has further attracted interest in the fields of both synthesis and application of nanomaterials. In this paper, we report the synthesis of long-wavelength emitting silicon quantum dots based on a one-step hydrothermal route with catechol (CC) and sodium citrate (Na-citrate) as a reducing agent pair, and N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (DAMO) as silicon source. By controlling the reaction time, yellow-emitting silicon quantum dots and green-emitting silicon quantum dots were synthesized with quantum yields (QYs) of 29.4% and 38.3% respectively. The as-prepared silicon quantum dots were characterized by fluorescence (PL) spectrum, UV⁻visible spectrum, high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Zeta potential. With the aid of these methods, this paper further discussed how the optical performance and surface characteristics of the prepared quantum dots (QDs) influence the fluorescence mechanism. Meanwhile, the cell toxicity of the silicon quantum dots was tested by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium (MTT) bromide method, and its potential as a fluorescence ink explored. The silicon quantum dots exhibit a red-shift phenomenon in their fluorescence peak due to the participation of the carbonyl group during the synthesis. The high-efficiency and stable photoluminescence of the long-wavelength emitting silicon quantum dots prepared through a synergistic effect is of great value in their future application as novel optical materials in bioimaging, LED, and materials detection.

One-step synthesis of green emission carbon dots for selective and sensitive detection of nitrite ions and cellular imaging application.

Project description:In recent years, carbon dot (CD)-based fluorescent sensors for selective ions or small biomolecules have drawn great attention. In this work, highly fluorescent CDs (QY = 21%) were prepared from 2,3-diamino pyridine as the precursor through a facile solvothermal process. The CDs showed high stability and a green emission in aqueous, and the optimal emission wavelength of CDs is 508 nm under the excitation wavelength of 438 nm. Interestingly, a CDs-based nanoprobe was developed for a selective and sensitive fluorescence quenching response to NO2 - in water, and the quenching mechanism was investigated in the work. Besides, the recovery rates of NO2 - in the range of 98-103.5% were found to be acceptable, indicating that the proposed CDs could be act as potential candidates for determination of nitrite ions in real samples. Meanwhile, the nanoprobe was also successfully employed in a visualization biosensing platform for determination of NO2 - in living cells due to its eminent biocompatibility.

One-Step Synthesis of Green Fluorescent Carbon Dots for Chloride Detecting and for Bioimaging.

Project description:The chloride ion is an essential ion in organisms, which plays an important role in maintaining normal cell functions. It is involved in many cell activities, such as cell proliferation, cell excitability regulation, immune response, and volume regulation. Accurate detection of the chloride ion can balance its concentration in vivo, which is of great significance. In this study, we developed a green fluorescent carbon quantum dot to detect chloride concentration through the "off-on" mechanism. First, the fluorescence of carbon dots is quenched by the complex of sulfhydryl and silver ions on the surface of carbon dots. Then, the addition of chloride ions pulls away the silver ions and restores the fluorescence. The fluorescence recovery is linearly related to the concentration of chloride ions, and the limit of detection is 2.817 μM, which is much lower than those of other reported chloride probes. Besides, cell and zebrafish experiments confirmed the biosafety and biocompatibility of the carbon dots, which provided a possibility for further applications in bioimaging in vivo.

One-Step Green Synthesis of Water-Soluble Fluorescent Carbon Dots and Its Application in the Detection of Cu2.

Project description:Renewable biowaste-derived carbon dots have garnered immense interest owing to their exceptional optical, fluorescence, chemical, and environmentally friendly attributes, which have been exploited for the detection of metals, non-metals, and organics in the environment. In the present study, water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized via facile green microwave pyrolysis of pine-cone biomass as precursors, without any chemical additives. The synthesized fluorescent pine-cone carbon dots (PC-CDs) were spherical in shape with a bimodal particle-size distribution (average diameters of 15.2 nm and 42.1 nm) and a broad absorption band of between 280 and 350 nm, attributed to a π-π* and n-π* transition. The synthesized PC-CDs exhibited the highest fluorescent (FL) intensity at an excitation wavelength of 360 nm, with maximum emission of 430 nm. The synthesized PC-CDs were an excellent fluorescent probe for the selective detection of Cu2+ in aqueous solution, amidst the presence of other metal ions. The FL intensity of PC-CDs was exceptionally quenched in the presence of Cu2+ ions, with a low detection limit of 0.005 μg/mL; this was largely ascribed to Cu2+ ion binding interactions with the enriched surface functional groups on the PC-CDs. As-synthesized PC-CDs are an excellent, cost effective, and sensitive probe for detecting and monitoring Cu2+ metal ions in wastewater.

One-step facile preparation of carbon dots with high fluorescence quantum yield and application in rapid latent fingerprint detection.

Project description:The development of luminescent materials greatly affects the development of fluorescence imaging technology. The preparation of carbon dots (CDs) with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the solid-state is challenging due to excessive resonance energy transfer (RET) and direct π-π interactions. In this study, we synthesized carbon dots that exhibit green fluorescence (GCDs) with absolute PLQYs up to 35.65% in one step by a microwave-assisted method. In the solid-state, the absolute PLQY reached 19.25%. Then, the GCDs were mixed with soluble starch in appropriate proportions, which improved the adsorption and dispersion of the GCDs and greatly reduced the cost of the fingerprint powder, and increased the absolute PLQY of the fingerprint powder to 41.75%. Finally, we prepared GCDs for preliminary fabrication of luminescent films, and the GCD-starch powder was successfully applied to high-quality latent fingerprint (LFP) imaging. The related properties of GCDs and the LFP detection performance of fingerprint detection powders prepared by GCDs were studied in detail. The results showed that the LFP system developed with GCDs-starch powder visualized LFPs with high definition and contrast under different conditions, and GCDs had potential for application in light-emitting devices. This study developed a new type of solid-state luminescent CDs and demonstrated that these GCDs have great application potential for LFP detection. This study may also provide inspiration for other applications based on efficient solid-state fluorescence.

One-Step Preparation of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots With Anodic Electrochemiluminescence for Sensitive Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide and Glucose.

Project description:Simple and efficient synthesis of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with anodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) remains a great challenge. Herein, we present an anodic ECL-sensing platform based on nitrogen-doped GQDs (N-GQDs), which enables sensitive detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose. N-GQDs are easily prepared using one-step molecular fusion between carbon precursor and a dopant in an alkaline hydrothermal process. The synthesis is simple, green, and has high production yield. The as-prepared N-GQDs exhibit a single graphene-layered structure, uniform size, and good crystalline. In the presence of H2O2, N-GQDs possess high anodic ECL activity owing to the functional hydrazide groups. With N-GQDs being ECL probes, sensitive detection of H2O2 in the range of 0.3-100.0 μM with a limit of detection or LOD of 63 nM is achieved. As the oxidation of glucose catalyzed by glucose oxidase (GOx) produces H2O2, sensitive detection of glucose is also realized in the range of 0.7-90.0 μM (LOD of 96 nM).

One-step high-yield preparation of nitrogen- and sulfur-codoped carbon dots with applications in chromium(vi) and ascorbic acid detection.

Project description:In this research, a nitrogen- (N) and sulfur- (S) codoped carbon dot (CDs-IPM)-based sensor was synthesized using a single-step hydrothermal method. Specifically, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was the main raw material, which was extracted from banana pseudo-stem-based waste, while autonomous sulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquid (SO3H-IL) and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) acted as the N, S dopant, and surface modifier, respectively. Comprehensive spectroscopic characterization of the synthesized CDs-IPM revealed the introduction of S, N atoms in the matrix with existence of surface oxygenic functional groups. The CDs-IPM possessed enhanced photoluminescence (PL) intensity, synthetic yield, and PL quantum yield (PLQY). Additionally, electron transfer between the CDs-IPM, hexavalent chromium (Cr(vi)), and subsequent ascorbic acid (AA) succeeded in turning the fluorescence on and off. The detection limit was 17 nM for Cr(vi), while it was 103 nM for AA. Our study data can simplify the process of synthesis of CDs utilizing biodegradable starting materials. The probe reported in this study may serve as a valuable addition to the field of environment monitoring by virtue of its enhanced detection sensitivity, high selectivity, and stability.

One-step instant synthesis of protein-conjugated quantum dots at room temperature.

Project description:We present a new general facile strategy for the preparation of protein-functionalized QDs in a single step at ambient conditions. We demonstrated that highly luminescent red to near-infrared (NIR) protein-functionalized QDs could be synthesized at room temperature in one second through a one-pot reaction that proceeds in aqueous solution. Herein protein-functionalized QDs were successfully constructed for a variety of proteins with a wide range of molecular weights and isoelectric points. The as-prepared protein-conjugated QDs exhibited high quantum yield, high photostabiliy and colloidal stability, and high functionalization efficiency. Importantly, the proteins attached to the QDs maintain their biological activities and are capable of catalyzing reactions and biotargeting. In particular, the as-prepared transferrin-QDs could be used to label cancer cells with high specificity. Moreover, we demonstrated that this synthetic strategy could be extended to prepare QDs functionalized with folic acids and peptides, which were also successfully applied to cancer cell imaging.

A Versatile Brij-Linker for One-Step Preparation of Targeted Nanoparticles.

Project description:Background: Most frequently the functionalization of nanoparticles is hampered by time-consuming, sometimes harsh conjugation and purification procedures causing premature drug release and/or degradation. A strategy to circumvent multi-step protocols is to synthesize building blocks with different functionalities and to use mixtures thereof for nanoparticle preparation in one step. Methods: BrijS20 was converted into an amine derivative via a carbamate linkage. The Brij-amine readily reacts with pre-activated carboxyl-containing ligands such as folic acid. The structures of the building blocks were confirmed by different spectroscopic methods and their utility was assessed by one-step preparation and characterization of nanoparticles applying PLGA as a matrix polymer. Results: Nanoparticles were about 200 nm in diameter independent of the composition. Experiments with human folate expressing single cells and monolayer revealed that the nanoparticle building block Brij mediates a "stealth" effect and the Brij-amine-folate a "targeting" effect. As compared to plain nanoparticles, the stealth effect decreased the cell interaction by 13%, but the targeting effect increased the cell interaction by 45% in the monolayer. Moreover, the targeting ligand density and thus the cell association of the nanoparticles is easily fine-tuned by selection of the initial ratio of the building blocks. Conclusions: This strategy might be a first step towards the one-step preparation of nanoparticles with tailored functionalities. Relying on a non-ionic surfactant is a versatile approach as it might be extended to other hydrophobic matrix polymers and promising targeting ligands from the biotech pipeline.

One Step Preparation of Peptide-Coated Gold Nanoparticles with Tunable Size.

Project description:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) made from self-assembling peptides have been used in many research fields and attracted a great deal of attention due to their high stability, biocompatibility and functionality. However, existing preparation methods for peptide-coated AuNPs are post-synthesis processes, which are complicated and time consuming. Therefore, a one-step preparation method for peptide-coated AuNPs is proposed here. The AuNPs obtained by this method exhibit good stability. Importantly, peptide-coated AuNPs with precise different sizes can be prepared by this method through pH control of reducing reagent tyrosine in range of 10.0~12.7. Thus, the one-step preparation method proposed here provides a significant tool for the research in different fields concerning NP size, stability and biocompatibility.
