Project description:The use of standard enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques allows for the improvement of oilfield performance after waterflooding processes. Chemical EOR methods modify different properties of fluids and/or rock to mobilize the remaining oil. Moreover, combined techniques have been developed to maximize the performance by using the joint properties of the chemical slugs. A new simulator is presented to study a surfactant-polymer flooding, based on a two-phase, five-component system (aqueous and oleous phases with water, petroleum, polymer, surfactant, and salt) for a 2D reservoir model. The physical properties modified by these chemicals are considered as well as the synergy between them. The analysis of the chemical injection strategy is deemed vital for the success of the operations. This plays a major role in the efficiency of the recovery process, including the order and the time gap between each chemical slug injection. As the latter is increased, the flooding tends to behave as two separate processes. Best results are found when both slugs are injected overlapped, with the polymer in first place which improves the sweeping efficiency of the viscous oil. This simulator can be used to study different chemical combinations and their injection procedure to optimize the EOR process.

Project description:During the process of well cementing in deep water, the cement slurry experiences a wide range of temperature variation from low temperature at seabed to high temperature in downhole. The elevated temperature affects the rheology of cement slurry. The change of rheology of cement slurry could influence the safety of cementing operation. The aim of this paper is to develop a new kind of hydrophobically associating water-soluble polymer (NHAWP) as an additive to prepare a constant rheology oil well cement slurry, which can be used at temperature range from 4°C to 90°C. The acrylamide, 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropionic acid and stearyl methylacrylate were applied to synthesize the NHAWP by the inverse microemulsion polymerization. Test results indicate that the critical association temperature of NHAWP is 45°C. The critical association temperature is independent of NHAWP concentration, salt concentration and alkalinity of solution. When the temperature is below 45°C, NHAWP shows little influence on the viscosity of solution. When the temperature is above 45°C, the NHAWP forms spatial network structure by intermolecular hydrophobic association and thus increases the viscosity of solution significantly. The NHAWP also displays good thermal stability and excellent salt and alkali resistance properties. In addition, the NHAWP shows nearly no negative influence on the basic properties of cement slurry, which indicates that the NHAWP can be used as a constant rheology agent to prepare a cement slurry with constant rheology in the temperature range of 4°C to 90°C.

Project description:The wide application of surfactants has a harmful effect on the environment, drawing more attention to the development and application of low-toxicity surfactants. A salt-tolerant and low-toxicity biobased zwitterionic surfactant, N,N-dimethyl-N-[2-hydroxy-3-sulfo-propyl]-N-benzyloxyoctadecanoyl-1,3-propanediamine (SPBOPA), was prepared from the oleic acid extracted from waste oils and anise ether extracted from the tarragon. The final surfactant structure was confirmed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The SPBOPA surfactant could reduce the interfacial tension between crude oil and formation brine to ultralow (5.2 × 10-4 mN/m) at a low dosage without extra alkali. It still had good interfacial properties in NaCl up to 60 g/L, Ca2+ up to 2000 mg/L, and temperature up to 100 °C. Furthermore, SPBOPA had strong antidilution and antiadsorption properties with low toxicity as demonstrated by the high LD50 value of >5000 mg/kg·BW. It could also enhance the wetting ability of crude oil surfaces. Meanwhile, it showed a high biodegradability in the environment. All of the results achieved in this work confirmed that the SPBOPA surfactant is a more robust and promising biobased surfactant candidate than traditional surfactants as an eco-friendly surfactant for enhanced oil recovery (EOR).

Project description:With oleic acid grafting modification, a series of hyperbranched-linear polymer surfactants (HLPS) were prepared by hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched polymer (HBP), which was gained through a step synthesis method using trimethylolpropane and AB2 monomer. The AB2 monomers were obtained through the Michael addition reaction of methyl acrylate and diethanol amine. The structures of HLPS were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), which indicated that HBP was successfully modified by oleic acid. Furthermore, the properties of surface tension and critical micelle concentration of HLPS solution showed that HLPS can significantly reduce the surface tension of water. The morphology of the HLPS solution was characterised by dynamic light scattering, which revealed that HLPS exhibited a nonmonotonic appearance in particle size at different scattering angles owing to the different replaced linear portions. The relationships of the surface pressure to monolayer area and time were measured using the Langmuir-Blodgett instrument, which showed that the surface tension of monolayer molecules increased with the increasing of hydrophobic groups. In addition, the interface conditions of different replaced HLPS solutions were simulated.

Project description:Alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding is considered to be one of the most promising tertiary oil recovery techniques. Nevertheless, its low sweep efficiency in a multilayer heterogeneous reservoir limits field applications. In this work, linearly descending viscosity, a novel injection pattern of ASP flooding, was used for mobility control. Three-dimensional multilayer heterogeneous core models were designed and fabricated. ASP flooding experiments were conducted in the laboratory, and the remaining oil distribution was measured during flooding. Fluid samples obtained from production wells were used for the viscosity measurement. Contrast experiments were made using another two injection patterns including constant viscosity fluid injection and linearly ascending viscosity fluid injection. The results indicated that ASP flooding with linearly descending viscosity improved oil recovery by over 25%, which was a better performance than that obtained using the other two injection patterns. As the different injection patterns presented a similar recovery in the high permeability layer, the sweep efficiency of ASP fluid in the middle and low permeability layers contributed to the difference in the ultimate oil recoveries. In addition, the initial viscosity of the ASP slug had the greatest effect on the mobility modification. Linearly descending viscosity had the highest initial viscosity, leading to the highest fluid distribution rate in the middle and low permeability layers. In addition, higher effluent viscosity was obtained and an earlier viscosity peak occurred in ASP flooding with linearly descending viscosity. Therefore, the sweep efficiency in middle and low permeability layers was remarkably enlarged by using linearly descending viscosity. Thus, increasing the viscosity of the displacement agent as early as possible was found to be significantly in a multilayer heterogeneous reservoir. This study provides an insight into ASP flooding in multilayer heterogeneous reservoirs.

Project description:Two series of binary graft cationic starch-based flocculants (CS-DMCs and CS-DMLs) with different hydrophilicity and charge density (CD) were prepared by graft copolymerization of acrylamide with 2-(Methacryloyloxy)-N,N,N-trimethylethanaminium chloride and methacrylic acid 2-(benzyldimethylaminio) ethyl chloride, respectively, on the starch (St) backbone. The sludge dewatering performance of CS-DMCs and CS-DMLs were evaluated and compared based on the changes in filter cake moisture content (FCMC), specific resistance of filtration (SRF), fractions and components of extracellular polymeric substances, and various physiochemical characteristics of sludge flocs and cakes. Increase in CD of the St-based flocculants caused improved sludge dewaterability. Under the similar CD, CS-DML with relatively high hydrophobicity exhibited lower FCMC and SRF, larger and denser sludge flocs, and better permeability of sludge cakes than CS-DMCs due to the synergistic effects of charge neutralization, bridging flocculation and hydrophobic association. Furthermore, a second-order polynomial model on the basis of phenomenological theory was successfully applied to quantitatively evaluate the influences of the two important structural factors of these St-based flocculants, i.e., hydrophobicity and CD, on the sludge dewaterability. The structure-activity relationship of the St-based flocculants in sludge dewatering was obtained according to the theoretic simulation. The dewatering mechanisms was discussed in depth on the basis of the experimental and simulated results; besides, the FCMC and optimal dose can be predicted by the established structure-activity relationship. This current work offered a novel and valuable way to exploit and design of low-cost and high-performance graft natural polymeric flocculants applied in efficient conditioning of sludge.

Project description:Interfacial vibrational footprints of the binary mixture of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and hexaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E6) were probed using heterodyne detected vibrational sum frequency generation (HDVSFG). Our results show that in the presence of C12E6 at CMC (70 μM) the effect of SDS on the orientation of interfacial water molecules is enhanced 10 times compared to just pure surfactants. The experimental results contest the traditional Langmuir adsorption model predictions. This is also evidenced by our molecular dynamics simulations that show a remarkable restructuring and enhanced orientation of the interfacial water molecules upon DS- adsorption to the C12E6 surface. The simulations show that the adsorption free energy of DS- ions to a water surface covered with C12E6 is an enthalpy-driven process and more attractive by ∼10 kBT compared to the adsorption energy of DS- to the surface of pure water.

Project description:Emulsification is a powerful, well-known technique for mixing and dispersing immiscible components within a continuous liquid phase. Consequently, emulsions are central components of medicine, food and performance materials. Complex emulsions, including Janus droplets (that is, droplets with faces of differing chemistries) and multiple emulsions, are of increasing importance in pharmaceuticals and medical diagnostics, in the fabrication of microparticles and capsules for food, in chemical separations, in cosmetics, and in dynamic optics. Because complex emulsion properties and functions are related to the droplet geometry and composition, the development of rapid, simple fabrication approaches allowing precise control over the droplets' physical and chemical characteristics is critical. Significant advances in the fabrication of complex emulsions have been made using a number of procedures, ranging from large-scale, less precise techniques that give compositional heterogeneity using high-shear mixers and membranes, to small-volume but more precise microfluidic methods. However, such approaches have yet to create droplet morphologies that can be controllably altered after emulsification. Reconfigurable complex liquids potentially have great utility as dynamically tunable materials. Here we describe an approach to the one-step fabrication of three- and four-phase complex emulsions with highly controllable and reconfigurable morphologies. The fabrication makes use of the temperature-sensitive miscibility of hydrocarbon, silicone and fluorocarbon liquids, and is applied to both the microfluidic and the scalable batch production of complex droplets. We demonstrate that droplet geometries can be alternated between encapsulated and Janus configurations by varying the interfacial tensions using hydrocarbon and fluorinated surfactants including stimuli-responsive and cleavable surfactants. This yields a generalizable strategy for the fabrication of multiphase emulsions with controllably reconfigurable morphologies and the potential to create a wide range of responsive materials.

Project description:Cherenkov radiation occurs only when a charged particle moves with a velocity exceeding the phase velocity of light in that matter. This radiation mechanism creates directional light emission at a wide range of frequencies and could facilitate the development of on-chip light sources except for the hard-to-satisfy requirement for high-energy particles. Creating Cherenkov radiation from low-energy electrons that has no momentum mismatch with light in free space is still a long-standing challenge. Here, we report a mechanism to overcome this challenge by exploiting a combined effect of interfacial Cherenkov radiation and umklapp scattering, namely the constructive interference of light emission from sequential particle-interface interactions with specially designed (umklapp) momentum-shifts. We find that this combined effect is able to create the interfacial Cherenkov radiation from ultralow-energy electrons, with kinetic energies down to the electron-volt scale. Due to the umklapp scattering for the excited high-momentum Bloch modes, the resulting interfacial Cherenkov radiation is uniquely featured with spatially separated apexes for its wave cone and group cone.

Project description:In this work, we prepared nonionic surfactants from waste cooking oil materials. Hydrolysis was carried out for palm and palm kernel waste cooking oils to get a mixture of free fatty acids. The mixture of free acids was esterified with sorbitan and then ethoxylated at different ethylene oxide units. Two surfactants exhibited promising surface-active properties among the six prepared surfactants based on the results of surface tension. The interfacial tension (IFT) around the critical micelle concentration was measured against a series of n-hydrocarbon to detect the minimum alkane carbon number (ACN) (Πmin) for each of these surfactants. The effect of normal and branched alcohols on Πmin was also studied to design the surfactant/alcohol mixture for the chemical flooding process. From the results of IFT, the ethoxylated ester derivatives of palm kernel fatty acids (EPK-20) exhibited minimum IFT γmin (0.06 mN m-1) at Πmin equal to 12, and the ethoxylated ester derivatives of palm fatty acids (EP-40) achieved γmin equal to 0.09 mN m-1 at Πmin of 10. Branched alcohols shifted Πmin to a higher value to reach the equivalent ACN of the crude oil and decrease the IFT to lower values. The flooding process showed that the maximum oil recovery was obtained by EPK-20 (54.2% when used purely and 66.2% when used with isoamyl alcohol). In comparison, EP-40 exhibited that oil recovery equals 46% without alcohol and 46.4% with iso-butanol alcohol. The results were interpreted and discussed based on interfacial properties, wettability alteration, and the ACN.
