Shape memory materials based on adamantane-containing polyurethanes.

ABSTRACT: In this contribution, a series of adamantane (AD)-containing polyurethanes were prepared from 1,3-adamantanediol, 1,4-butanediol and hexamethylene diisocyanate, and the influences of AD on the shape memory behavior of polyurethanes were systematically studied. Due to large steric hindrance, AD was able to disrupt the regular arrangement of polyurethane chains and contributed to forming an amorphous domain. It was found that moderate AD-containing polyurethanes had good mechanical properties and broad glass transition, and shape memory tests confirmed these polyurethanes possessed a shape fixation rate of 98% and shape recovery rate of 91% during a dual-shape memory procedure. Furthermore, they also exhibited a triple-shape memory effect. This work demonstrated a facile and feasible way to prepare polyurethane-based shape memory materials by using adamantane as a functional unit.

Fast-Responding Bio-Based Shape Memory Thermoplastic Polyurethanes.

Project description:Novel fast response shape-memory polyurethanes were prepared from bio-based polyols, diphenyl methane diisocyanate and butane diol for the first time. The bio-based polyester polyols were synthesized from 9-hydroxynonanoic acid, a product obtained by ozonolysis of fatty acids extracted from soy oil and castor oil. The morphology of polyurethanes was investigated by synchrotron ultra-small angle X-ray scattering, which revealed the inter-domain spacing between the hard and soft phases, the degree of phase separation, and the level of intermixing between the hard and soft phases. We also conducted thorough investigations of the thermal, mechanical, and dielectric properties of the polyurethanes, and found that high crystallization rate of the soft segment gives these polyurethanes unique properties suitable for shape-memory applications, such as adjustable transition temperatures, high degree of elastic elongations, and good mechanical strength. These materials are also potentially biodegradable and biocompatible, therefore suitable for biomedical and environmental applications.

Shape Memory Polyurethanes Based on Zwitterionic Hard Segments.

Project description:This work aimed at elucidating the influence of zwitterionic hard segments on the structures and properties of shape memory polyurethanes (SMPUs). A series of zwitterionic SMPUs was successfully prepared with N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), 1,3-propanesultone (1,3-PS), 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and polyethylene glycol (PEG6000). The influence of MDEA-PS-based zwitterionic hard segment on structure, morphology, thermal property, shape memory property and cytocompatibility were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that the PEG-based zwitterionic SMPUs (PEG-ZSMPUs) formed phase separation structure consisting of crystalline soft phase and amorphous hard phase. The MDEA-PS zwitterionic segments showed a tendency to form ionic clusters in hard segments, which served as reinforced net points. Shape memory analysis showed that zwitterionic PEG-ZSMPUs containing a high content of zwitterionic segments had thermal-induced shape memory effects. Finally, cytotoxic assays demonstrated that MDEA-PS zwitterionic segment improved the biocompatibility of PEG-ZSMPUs. The zwitterionic PEG-ZSMPUs could thus have a promising application in smart biomedical fields.

Self-Defensive Antimicrobial Shape Memory Polyurethanes with Honey-Based Compounds.

Project description:Infection treatment plays a crucial role in aiding the body in wound healing. To that end, we developed a library of antimicrobial polymers based on segmented shape memory polyurethanes with nondrug-based antimicrobials (i.e., honey-based phenolic acids (PAs)) using both chemical and physical incorporation approaches. The antimicrobial shape memory polymers (SMPs) have high transition temperatures (>55 °C) to enable maintenance of temporary, programmed shapes in physiological conditions unless a specific external stimulus is present. Polymers showed tunable mechanical and shape memory properties by changing the ratio, chemistry, and incorporation method of PAs. Cytocompatible (∼100% cell viability) synthesized polymers inhibited growth rates of Staphylococcus aureus (∼100% with physically incorporated PAs and >80% with chemically incorporated PAs) and Escherichia coli (∼100% for samples with cinnamic acid (physical and chemical)). Crystal violet assays showed that all formulations inhibit biofilm formation in surrounding solutions, and chemically incorporated samples showed surface antibiofilm properties with S. aureus. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm that PAs have higher levels of interactions with S. aureus cell membranes than E. coli. Long-term antimicrobial properties were measured after storage of the sample in aqueous conditions; the polymers retained their antimicrobial properties against E. coli after up to 20 days. As a proof of concept, magnetic particles were incorporated into the polymer to trigger user-defined shape recovery by applying an external magnetic field. Shape recovery disrupted preformed S. aureus biofilms on polymer surfaces. This antimicrobial biomaterial platform could enable user- or environmentally controlled shape change and/or antimicrobial release to enhance infection treatment efforts.

Shape memory polyurethanes crosslinked with castor oil-based multifunctional polyols.

Project description:As both the industry and academia become more focused on biomass-based smart materials, they are attracting a lot of attention. There has been a significant effort in the field of polyurethane (PU) synthesis to replace polyols used in synthesis with bio-derived polyols. Bio-derived polyols have limited application potential for bio-based PU due to their low functionality. Here, we reported castor oil (CO) based multifunctional polyols prepared by grafting thiols such as 1-mercaptoethanol or α-thioglycerol via a facile thiol-ene click reaction method (coded as COM and COT, respectively). Subsequently, bio-based shape memory polyurethanes (SMPU) crosslinked with prepared polyols were synthesized using a 2-step prepolymer method. By confirming the functionality of the synthesized polyols, it was determined that COT has an OH value of 380 mg KOH/g, which is approximately three times that of CO. The successful synthesis of SMPUs was confirmed through chemical structural analysis. It was also proved that the phase separation between the soft and hard segments was limited due to the increase in crosslinking density. As compared to SMPU crosslinked with CO, the mechanical strength of SMPU crosslinked with COT was improved by 80%, while the elongation was decreased by about 26%. As a result of shape memory behavior analysis, it was confirmed that the outstanding SMPU can be synthesized using CO-based multifunctional polyols.

Synthesis of Novel Shape Memory Thermoplastic Polyurethanes (SMTPUs) from Bio-Based Materials for Application in 3D/4D Printing Filaments.

Project description:Bio-based thermoplastic polyurethanes have attracted increasing attention as advanced shape memory materials. Using the prepolymer method, novel fast-responding shape memory thermoplastic polyurethanes (SMTPUs) were prepared from 100% bio-based polyester polyol, poly-propylene succinate derived from corn oil, diphenyl methane diisocyanate, and bio-based 1,3-propanediol as a chain extender. The morphologies of the SMTPUs were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, which revealed the interdomain spacing between the hard and soft phases, the degree of phase separation, and the intermixing level between the hard and soft phases. The thermal and mechanical properties of the SMTPUs were also investigated, wherein a high hard segment content imparted unique properties that rendered the SMTPUs suitable for shape memory applications at varying temperatures. More specifically, the SMTPUs exhibited a high level of elastic elongation and good mechanical strength. Following compositional optimization, a tensile strength of 24-27 MPa was achieved, in addition to an elongation at break of 358-552% and a hardness of 84-92 Shore A. Moreover, the bio-based SMTPU exhibited a shape recovery of 100%, thereby indicating its potential for use as an advanced temperature-dependent shape memory material with an excellent shape recoverability.

Block Copolymers of Poly(ω-Pentadecalactone) in Segmented Polyurethanes: Novel Biodegradable Shape Memory Polyurethanes.

Project description:In this report, the synthesis of poly(ω-pentadecalactone) (PPDL) (co)polymers and their incorporation into polyurethanes (PUs) are reported. Optimal conditions for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ω-pentadecalactone (PDL) using dibutyltin dilaurate catalyst were established. For the synthesis of linear and crosslinked PUs, 50 kDa poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and 1,6-hexamethylenediisocyanate (HDI) were used. The obtained polyurethanes were characterized by Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (AT-FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA). The DMA of the selected sample showed a rubbery plateau on the storage modulus versus temperature curve predicting shape memory behavior. Indeed, good shape memory performances were obtained with shape fixity (Rf) and shape recovery (Rr) ratios.

Synthesis of Shape-Memory Polyurethanes: Combined Experimental and Simulation Studies.

Project description:The presented research focuses on the synthesis and structure-properties relationship of poly(carbonate-urea-urethane) (PCUU) systems including investigations on shape-memory effect capability. Furthermore, we approached the topic from a broader perspective by conducting extensive analysis of the relationship between the synthesized compounds and the results of computer simulations by means of the Monte Carlo method. For the first time, by using a unique simulation tool, the dynamic lattice liquid model (DLL), all steps of multi-step synthesis of these materials were covered by the simulations. Furthermore, broad thermal, mechanical, and thermomechanical characterization of synthesized PCUUs was performed, as well as determining the shape-memory properties. PCUUs exhibited good mechanical properties with a tensile strength above 20 MPa, elongation at break around 800%, and an exhibited shape-memory effect with shape fixity and shape recovery ratios above 94% and 99%, respectively. The dynamic lattice liquid model was employed to show the products and their molar mass distribution, as well as monomer conversion or the dispersity index for individual reaction steps. The results obtained in the following manuscript allow the planning of syntheses for the PCUUs of various structures, including crosslinked and soluble systems, which can provide a broad variety of applications of these materials, as well as a better understanding of the composition-properties relationship.

A New Type of Photo-Thermo Staged-Responsive Shape-Memory Polyurethanes Network.

Project description:In this paper, we developed a photo-thermo staged-responsive shape-memory polymer network which has a unique ability of being spontaneously photo-responsive deformable and thermo-responsive shape recovery. This new type of shape-memory polyurethane network (A-SMPUs) was successfully synthesized with 4,4-azodibenzoic acid (Azoa), hexamethylenediisocyanate (HDI) and polycaprolactone (PCL), followed by chemical cross-linking with glycerol (Gl). The structures, morphology, and shape-memory properties of A-SMPUs have been carefully investigated. The results demonstrate that the A-SMPUs form micro-phase separation structures consisting of a semi-crystallized PCL soft phase and an Azoa amorphous hard phase that could influence the crystallinity of PCL soft phases. The chemical cross-linking provided a stable network and good thermal stability to the A-SMPUs. All A-SMPUs exhibited good triple-shape-memory properties with higher than 97% shape fixity ratio and 95% shape recovery ratio. Additionally, the A-SMPUs with higher Azoa content exhibited interesting photo-thermo two-staged responsiveness. A pre-processed film with orientated Azoa structure exhibited spontaneous curling deformation upon exposing to ultraviolet (UV) light, and curling deformation is constant even under Vis light. Finally, the curling deformation can spontaneously recover to the original shape by applying a thermal stimulus. This work demonstrates new synergistically multi-responsive SMPUs that will have many applications in smart science and technology.

Reprogrammable Permanent Shape Memory Materials Based on Reversibly Crosslinked Epoxy/PCL Blends.

Project description:: Epoxy/Polycaprolactone (PCL) blends cured with a conventional diamine (4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane, DDM) and with different amounts of a disulfide containing diamine (4, 4´-dithioaniline, DSS) were prepared through melting. The curing process was studied by FTIR and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the mechanical behavior of the networks was studied by DMA. The shape memory properties and the recyclability of the materials were also analyzed. All blends showed a very high curing degree and temperature activated shape memory effect, related to the glass transition of the epoxy resin. The PCL plasticized the mixture, allowing tailoring of the epoxy glass transition. In addition, in the blends cured with DSS, as a consequence of the disulfide exchange reaction, the permanent shape could be erased and a new shape could be reprogrammed. Using this strategy, reprogrammable permanent shape memory materials were obtained.

Strategy for Fabricating Multiple-Shape Memory Polymeric Materials Based on Solid State Mixing.

Project description:Traditionally, multiple shape memory polymers (multiple-SMPs) are created by forming either immiscible blends with high phase continuity (cocontinuous or multilayer phase morphology) or miscible blends that exhibit compositional heterogeneity at the nanoscale. Here, a new strategy for the fabrication of multiple-SMPs is proposed. It consists of the possibility of homogeneous mixing of immiscible polymers in the solid state under high pressure and shear deformation conditions. The blends formed in this way exhibit homogeneity of mixing down to the nanoscale, up to 40-95 nm. The transition from immiscible to miscible blends leads to an improvement not only in shape memory but also in the mechanical performance of the blends formed. Polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) were selected as pairs of immiscible polymers. The method of solid phase mixing is high pressure torsion (HPT). It was shown that the HPT-processed 50% PP/50% PS blend is able to exhibit an excellent triple shape memory effect (shape fixation of ∼94-95%, and recovery of ∼85-95%) with widely tunable (low and high) transition temperatures.
