Facile preparation of partially reduced graphite oxide nanosheets as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors.

ABSTRACT: Preparation of graphene (GR) based electrode materials with excellent capacitive properties is of great importance to supercapacitors. Herein, we report a facile approach to prepare partially reduced graphite oxide (PRG) nanosheets by reducing graphite oxide (GO) using commercial Cu₂O powder as a reduction agent, moreover, we demonstrate that the PRG nanosheets can act as building blocks for assembling hydrogels (PRGH) and flexible film (PRGF). The obtained PRGH and PRGF can be directly used as binder-free electrodes for supercapacitors and give high specific capacitance (292 and 273 F g^-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g^-1 in a three-electrode system, respectively) due to the existence of oxygen-containing functional groups in PRG nanosheets. PRG also gives excellent rate ability and cycle stability. This study suggests a facile pathway to produce GR-based materials with excellent capacitive properties and is meaningful for flexible supercapacitors.

Facile preparation of flexible binder-free graphene electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors.

Project description:A facile two-step strategy to prepare flexible graphene electrodes has been developed for supercapacitors using thermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and thermally reduced graphene oxide (TRGO) composite films. The tunable porous structure of the GO/TRGO film provided channels to release the high pressure generated by CO2 gas. The graphene electrode obtained from reduced-GO/TRGO (1 : 1 in mass ratio) film showed great flexibility and high film density (0.52 g cm-3). Using the EMI-BF4 electrolyte with a working voltage of 3.7 V, the as-fabricated free-standing reduced-GO/TRGO (1 : 1) film achieved a great gravimetric capacitance of 180 F g-1 (delivering a gravimetric energy density of 85.6 W h kg-1), a volumetric capacitance of 94 F cm-3 (delivering a volumetric energy density of 44.7 W h L-1), and a 92% retention after 10 000 charge/discharge cycles. In addition, the solid state flexible supercapacitor with the free-standing reduced-GO/TRGO (1 : 1) film as the electrodes and the EMI-BF4/poly (vinylidene fluoride hexafluopropylene) (PVDF-HFP) gel as the electrolyte also demonstrated a high gravimetric capacitance of 146 F g-1 with excellent mechanical flexibility, bending stability, and electrochemical stability. The strategy developed in this study provides great potentials for the synthesis of flexible graphene electrodes for supercapacitors.

Construction of thickness-controllable bimetallic sulfides/reduced graphene oxide as a binder-free positive electrode for hybrid supercapacitors.

Project description:Devices for electrochemical energy storage with exceptional capacitance and rate performance, outstanding energy density, simple fabrication, long-term stability, and remarkable reversibility have always been in high demand. Herein, a high-performance binder-free electrode (3D NiCuS/rGO) was fabricated as a supercapacitor by a simple electrodeposition process on a Ni foam (NF) surface. The thickness of the deposited materials on the NF surface was adjusted by applying a low cycle number of cyclic voltammetry (5 cycles) which produced a thin layer and thus enabled the easier penetration of electrolytes to promote electron and charge transfer. The NiCuS was anchored by graphene layers producing nicely integrated materials leading to a higher electroconductivity and a larger surface area electrode. The as-fabricated electrode displayed a high specific capacitance (2211.029 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1). The NiCuS/rGO/NF//active carbon device can achieve a stable voltage window of 1.5 V with a highly specific capacitance of 84.3 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. At a power density of 749 W kg-1, a satisfactory energy density of 26.3 W h kg-1 was achieved, with outstanding coulombic efficiency of 100% and an admirable life span of 96.2% after 10 000 GCD cycles suggesting the significant potential of the as-prepared materials for practical supercapacitors.

Reduced Graphene Oxide as a Monolithic Multifunctional Conductive Binder for Activated Carbon Supercapacitors.

Project description:Using reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) as a multifunctional conductive binder, a simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly approach is developed to fabricate activated carbon/reduced graphene oxide (AC/r-GO) composite electrodes for supercapacitors with outstanding performance. In such a composite, r-GO provides several much needed critical functions: r-GO not only serves as the binder material improving the AC particle/particle cohesion and electrode-film/substrate adhesion but also improves the electrical conductivity of the composite and provides additional surfaces for ion adsorption. Furthermore, during electrode fabrication, initial GO precursor functions as an effective dispersant for AC, resulting in a stable electrode material slurry. Employing characterization by advanced microscopy techniques, we show that AC and r-GO assemble into an interconnected network structure, resulting in a composite with high specific capacitance, excellent rate capability, and long cycling life stability. Such high-performance electrodes coupled with their relatively simple, scalable, and low-cost fabrication process thereby provide a clear pathway toward large-scale implementation of supercapacitors.

Carbon Black and Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite for Binder-Free Supercapacitors with Reduced Graphene Oxide Paper as the Current Collector.

Project description:Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is an ideal candidate for the improvement of supercapacitor (SC) performances due to its industrial-ready manufacturing process and ease of processing. In this work, rGO was used as an active binder for the manufacture of carbon black (CB) and rGO-based SCs. Being able to form a stable suspension in water, graphene oxide (GO) was initially exploited as a dispersing agent to fabricate a homogeneous slurry with CB having exclusively water as a low-cost and environment-friendly solvent. After casting on a suitable substrate, the material was subjected to thermal treatment allowing the reduction of GO to rGO, which was successively confirmed by chemical-physical analysis. An innovative current collector, consisting of high-quality rGO paper, was also proposed ensuring an improved adhesion between the active material and the substrate and a reduction of the whole weight with respect to devices fabricated using common metallic current collectors. Due to the interesting electrochemical performances, with a high specific power of 32.1 kW kg-1 and a corresponding specific energy of 8.8 Wh kg-1 at a current of 1 A g-1, and the improved manufacturing process, the described "all-graphene-based" device represents a valuable candidate for the future of SCs.

Preparation of Cobalt Oxide-Reduced Graphitic Oxide Supercapacitor Electrode by Photothermal Processing.

Project description:We report a photonic technique to instantaneously synthesize cobalt oxide reduced graphitic oxide (CoOx-rGO) supercapacitor electrodes. The electrode processing is achieved through rapidly heating the precursor material by irradiation of high-energy pulsed mostly visible light from a xenon lamp. Due to the short duration of the light pulse, we prepared the electrodes at room temperature instantaneously (ms), thus eliminating the several hours of processing times of the conventional techniques. The as-prepared electrodes exhibited a highly porous morphology, allowing for enhanced ionic transport during electrochemical interactions. The electrochemical properties of the CoOx-rGO electrodes were studied in 1 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. The non-rectangular cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves with characteristic redox peaks indicated the pseudocapacitive charge storage mechanism of the electrodes. From the discharge curves at 0.4 mA/cm2 and 1.6 A/g constant current densities, the electrode showed areal specific capacitance of 17 mF/cm2 and specific capacitance of 69 F/g, respectively. Cyclic stability was tested by performing 30,000 galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) cycles and the electrode exhibited 65% capacitance retention, showing its excellent electrochemical performance and ultra-long cycle life. The excellent electrochemical electrode properties are attributed to the unique processing technique, optimum processing parameters, improved conductivity due to the presence of rGO, and highly porous morphology which offers a high specific surface area. The novel photonic processing we report allows for high-temperature heating of the precursor films achieved via non-radiative recombination of photogenerated electron holes pairs during irradiation. Such extremely quick (ms) heating followed by instantaneous cooling results in the formation of a dense and robust bottom layer of the electrode, resulting in a long cycle life.

In situ Growth of Cu2O/CuO Nanosheets on Cu Coating Carbon Cloths as a Binder-Free Electrode for Asymmetric Supercapacitors.

Project description:Cu2O/CuO nanosheets in-situ grown on Cu-Carbon cloths (Cu-CCs), namely Cu2O/CuO@Cu-CCs, are constructed by a simple strategy with electroless copper plating, chemical etching, and thermal dehydration. The as-prepared material is directly used as binder-free electrodes for supercapacitors (SCs). CCs coated with Cu, as the current collector, can effectively promote the charge collection and electron transfer, while the hierarchical Cu2O/CuO nanosheets provide massive active sites for fast faradic reactions. The composite electrode exhibits high specific capacitance [1.71 F cm-2, equivalent to 835.2 F g-1, at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 (3.57 A g-1)]. The asymmetric supercapacitor device using Cu2O/CuO@Cu-CCs as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, achieves a superior energy density up to 60.26 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 299.73 W kg-1 and an excellent long-term cycling stability (9.65% loss of its initial capacitance after 5,000 cycles). The excellent electrochemical performance is mainly ascribed to the unique hierarchical structure of Cu2O/CuO@Cu-CCs, making it attractive as a potential electrode material for high performance SCs.

Diaminopyrene modified reduced graphene oxide as a novel electrode material for excellent performance supercapacitors.

Project description:In this paper, novel reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites (DAPrGOs) modified by diaminopyrene (DAP) were successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal reaction method and used for supercapacitors. Compared with the pristine rGO, the DAPrGO1 electrode showed distinctly better performance (397.63 F g-1 vs. 80.29 F g-1 of pristine rGO at 0.5 A g-1) with small charge transfer resistance. When a symmetric device was fabricated using DAPrGO1 as the active material, it also exhibited a high capacitance of 82.70 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 with an energy density of 25.84 W h kg-1 at a power density of 375 W kg-1, and even offered a high power density of 7500 W kg-1 (18.71 W h kg-1) at 10 A g-1. Moreover, the device possessed good electrochemical stability up to 20 000 cycles, implying promising applications in energy storage fields.

Charge storage mechanisms of manganese oxide nanosheets and N-doped reduced graphene oxide aerogel for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors.

Project description:Although manganese oxide- and graphene-based supercapacitors have been widely studied, their charge storage mechanisms are not yet fully investigated. In this work, we have studied the charge storage mechanisms of K-birnassite MnO2 nanosheets and N-doped reduced graphene oxide aerogel (N-rGOae) using an in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and an electrochemical quart crystal microbalance (EQCM). The oxidation number of Mn at the MnO2 electrode is +3.01 at 0 V vs. SCE for the charging process and gets oxidized to +3.12 at +0.8 V vs. SCE and then reduced back to +3.01 at 0 V vs. SCE for the discharging process. The mass change of solvated ions, inserted to the layers of MnO2 during the charging process is 7.4 μg cm-2. Whilst, the mass change of the solvated ions at the N-rGOae electrode is 8.4 μg cm-2. An asymmetric supercapacitor of MnO2//N-rGOae (CR2016) provides a maximum specific capacitance of ca. 467 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, a maximum specific power of 39 kW kg-1 and a specific energy of 40 Wh kg-1 with a wide working potential of 1.6 V and 93.2% capacity retention after 7,500 cycles. The MnO2//N-rGOae supercapacitor may be practically used in high power and energy applications.

A binder-free sulfur/reduced graphene oxide aerogel as high performance electrode materials for lithium sulfur batteries.

Project description:Societies' increasing need for energy storage makes it necessary to explore new concepts beyond the traditional lithium ion battery. A promising candidate is the lithium-sulfur technology with the potential to increase the energy density of the battery by a factor of 3-5. However, so far the many problems with the lithium-sulfur system have not been solved satisfactory. Here we report on a new approach utilizing a self-standing reduced graphene oxide based aerogel directly as electrodes, i.e. without further processing and without the addition of binder or conducting agents. We can thereby disrupt the common paradigm of "no battery without binder" and can pave the way to a lithium-sulfur battery with a high practical energy density. The aerogels are synthesized via a one-pot method and consist of more than 2/3 sulfur, contained inside a porous few-layered reduced graphene oxide matrix. By combining the graphene-based aerogel cathode with an electrolyte and a lithium metal anode, we demonstrate a lithium-sulfur cell with high areal capacity (more than 3 mAh/cm2 after 75 cycles), excellent capacity retention over 200 cycles and good sulfur utilization. Based on this performance we estimate that the energy density of this concept-cell can significantly exceed the Department of Energy (DEO) 2020-target set for transport applications.

Reduced graphene oxide/MXene hybrid decorated graphite felt as an effective electrode for vanadium redox flow battery.

Project description:Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is a highly suitable technology for energy storage and conversion in the application of decoupling energy and power generation. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics of redox couples is one of the bottlenecks hindering the commercialization of VFFBs. Developing efficient electrode is a promising method to improve the battery performance. In this work, a reduced graphene oxide/Mxene hybrid-decorated graphite felt (rGO/Mxene@GF) is designed to facilitate the kinetics of redox reaction. The electrocatalytic activity and mass transfer of the prepared electrode are investigated through experiment and simulation methods. The results indicate that the favorable mass transfer and the synergistic effect between rGO and Ti3C2Tx Mxene remarkably improve the performance of electrode. The flow cell with rGO/Mxene@GF delivers a good stability up to 100 cycles with a coulombic, voltage, and energy efficiency of 91.6%, 82.7%, and 75.8%, respectively, at a current density of 80 mA cm-2. These findings suggest that the as-prepared rGO/Mxene@GF holds a good application potential in VRFB and provides a promising approach to design efficient electrode for electrochemical devices.
