Corrosion behaviour of welded low-carbon steel in the Arctic marine environment.

ABSTRACT: Arctic offshore sites have high potential for the exploration of energy resources; thus, data concerning the behaviour of structural materials in the Arctic environment are required. Here, we report the corrosive characteristics of welded low-carbon steels under simulated Arctic low-temperature conditions. The corrosion tendencies in the submerged and splash zones of offshore structures were investigated by immersion tests, salt spray tests (SST), and cyclic corrosion tests (CCT). The effects of decreasing seawater temperature on the corrosion were identified, and the differences in corrosion between the base metal (BM) and weld metal (WM) were analysed. In particular, the BM showed higher corrosion than the WM, indicating that the parent metal (PM) is corroded more than the fusion zone (FZ) in weld joints under severe corrosion conditions. Thus, we have identified the importance and influence of the thermal expansion of materials on corrosion under Arctic conditions.

Microbially induced corrosion of carbon steel in deep groundwater environment.

Project description:The metallic low and intermediate level radioactive waste generally consists of carbon steel and stainless steels. The corrosion rate of carbon steel in deep groundwater is typically low, unless the water is very acidic or microbial activity in the environment is high. Therefore, the assessment of microbially induced corrosion of carbon steel in deep bedrock environment has become important for evaluating the safety of disposal of radioactive waste. Here we studied the corrosion inducing ability of indigenous microbial community from a deep bedrock aquifer. Carbon steel coupons were exposed to anoxic groundwater from repository site 100 m depth (Olkiluoto, Finland) for periods of 3 and 8 months. The experiments were conducted at both in situ temperature and room temperature to investigate the response of microbial population to elevated temperature. Our results demonstrate that microorganisms from the deep bedrock aquifer benefit from carbon steel introduced to the nutrient poor anoxic deep groundwater environment. In the groundwater incubated with carbon steel the planktonic microbial community was more diverse and 100-fold more abundant compared to the environment without carbon steel. The betaproteobacteria were the most dominant bacterial class in all samples where carbon steel was present, whereas in groundwater incubated without carbon steel the microbial community had clearly less diversity. Microorganisms induced pitting corrosion and were found to cluster inside the corrosion pits. Temperature had an effect on the species composition of microbial community and also affected the corrosion deposits layer formed on the surface of carbon steel.

Marine Atmospheric Corrosion of Carbon Steel: A Review.

Project description:The atmospheric corrosion of carbon steel is an extensive topic that has been studied over the years by many researchers. However, until relatively recently, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the action of marine chlorides. Corrosion in coastal regions is a particularly relevant issue due the latter's great importance to human society. About half of the world's population lives in coastal regions and the industrialisation of developing countries tends to concentrate production plants close to the sea. Until the start of the 21st century, research on the basic mechanisms of rust formation in Cl--rich atmospheres was limited to just a small number of studies. However, in recent years, scientific understanding of marine atmospheric corrosion has advanced greatly, and in the authors' opinion a sufficient body of knowledge has been built up in published scientific papers to warrant an up-to-date review of the current state-of-the-art and to assess what issues still need to be addressed. That is the purpose of the present review. After a preliminary section devoted to basic concepts on atmospheric corrosion, the marine atmosphere, and experimentation on marine atmospheric corrosion, the paper addresses key aspects such as the most significant corrosion products, the characteristics of the rust layers formed, and the mechanisms of steel corrosion in marine atmospheres. Special attention is then paid to important matters such as coastal-industrial atmospheres and long-term behaviour of carbon steel exposed to marine atmospheres. The work ends with a section dedicated to issues pending, noting a series of questions in relation with which greater research efforts would seem to be necessary.

Monitoring the Corrosion of Steel in Concrete Exposed to a Marine Environment.

Project description:Reinforced concrete structures require continuous monitoring and maintenance to prevent corrosion of the carbon steel reinforcement. In this work, concrete columns with carbon and stainless steel reinforcements were exposed to a real marine environment. In order to monitor the corrosion processes, two types of corrosion probes were embedded in these columns at different height levels. The results from the monitoring of the probes were compared to the actual corrosion damage in the different exposure zones. Electrical resistance (ER) probes and coupled multi-electrodes (CMEs) were shown to be promising methods for long-term corrosion monitoring in concrete. Correlations between the different exposure zones and the corrosion processes of the steel in the concrete were found. Macrocell corrosion properties and the distribution of the separated anodic/cathodic places on the steel in chloride-contaminated concrete were addressed as two of the key issues for understanding the corrosion mechanisms in such environments. The specific advantages and limitations of the tested measuring techniques for long-term corrosion monitoring were also indicated. The results of the measurements and the corrosion damage evaluation clearly confirmed that the tested stainless steels (AISI 304 and AISI 304L) in a chloride-contaminated environment behave significantly better than ordinary carbon steel, with corrosion rates from 110× to 9500× lower in the most severe (tidal) exposure conditions.

Eco-friendly Silane-Based Coating for Mitigation of Carbon Steel Corrosion in Marine Environments.

Project description:Losses from corrosion contribute roughly 3-5% of the gross domestic product of developed nations, and among the many methods used to avoid corrosion, using silane-based coatings is seen to be of the biggest importance due to their low toxicity and superior adhesive qualities. It is essential to develop an anti-corrosion coating that is efficient, economical, and eco-friendly. The corrosion resistance and durability of various silane-based coatings such as 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTSE), bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]tetrasulfide (TESPT), and vinyltrimethylsilane (VTES) for carbon steel 1018 substrates were investigated in a high-salinity environment (4.5 wt % NaCl). The corrosion resistance performance was evaluated via potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Results revealed that the TESPT film (pH ≈ 7) has the best corrosion resistance performance on the carbon steel surface in the aggressive chloride environment, that is, 99.6%. The high corrosion resistance of the TESPT film is due to the hydrophobic nature of this silane, which leads to the formation of a stable and dense film. These results were supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses.

Chloride Distribution and Steel Corrosion in a Concrete Bridge after Long-Term Exposure to Natural Marine Environment.

Project description:Chloride-induced steel corrosion is the most concerning issue for the durability of concrete structures. Concrete and steel samples were obtained from a 30-year-old reinforced concrete bridge. The chloride content was measured by a potentiometric titration method and the microstructure of concrete was obtained by scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry. The rust phases of the steel were detected by X-ray diffraction and Raman analysis. It was found that the convection depth for chloride transport in cracked concrete was significantly larger than that in uncracked concrete. The concrete in a pier column facing upstream had greater porosity due to the water impact and calcium leaching. The coefficients of variability of chloride diffusivity of concrete for the bridge deck and the pier column were significantly different. Rust phases including lepidocrocite, goethite, akaganeite, magnetite, and maghemite were detected using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The major phases of steel rust in the atmospheric zone were lepidocrocite and goethite, while they were lepidocrocite and maghemite in the tidal zone. The results of this study would provide information concerning the chloride-induced steel corrosion under a marine environment in order to predict long-term behaviors of a reinforced concrete structure.

Performance of Anticorrosive Paint Systems for Carbon Steel in the Antarctic Marine Environment.

Project description:This study evaluated the behavior of three paint systems exposed to the Antarctic marine environment for 45 months compared to a control of uncoated carbon steel with a determined corrosion rate. At the study site, all environmental conditions, solar radiation, and the concentration of environmental pollutants (Cl- and SO2) were evaluated. The paint systems differed in terms of the primer and top coat. Coated samples were studied before and after exposure. They were evaluated visually and using SEM to determine adhesion, abrasion, and contact angle; using the Evans X-Cut Tape Test; using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy to analyze the state of aging of the top layer; and using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for coat protection characterization. The corrosion rate obtained for steel was 85.64 µm year-1, which aligned with a C5 environmental corrosivity category. In general, the evaluation in the period studied showed the paint systems had good adhesion and resistance to delamination, without the presence of surface rust, and exhibited some loss of brightness, an increase in the abrasion index, and a decrease in the percentage of reflectance due to aging. EIS showed good protection capability of the three coating schemes. In general, this type of paint system has not previously been evaluated in an extreme environment after 45 months of exposure to the environment. The results showed that the best behavior was found for the system whose top layer was acrylic-aliphatic polyurethane.

A Corrosion Sensor for Monitoring the Early-Stage Environmental Corrosion of A36 Carbon Steel.

Project description:An innovative prototype sensor containing A36 carbon steel as a capacitor was explored to monitor early-stage corrosion. The sensor detected the changes of the surface- rather than the bulk- property and morphology of A36 during corrosion. Thus it was more sensitive than the conventional electrical resistance corrosion sensors. After being soaked in an aerated 0.2 M NaCl solution, the sensor's normalized electrical resistance (R/R₀) decreased continuously from 1.0 to 0.74 with the extent of corrosion. Meanwhile, the sensor's normalized capacitance (C/C₀) increased continuously from 1.0 to 1.46. X-ray diffraction result indicates that the iron rust on A36 had crystals of lepidocrocite and magnetite.
