Self-discharge rates in cells have a critical effect on the cycle life of parallel lithium-ion batteries.

ABSTRACT: More than two parameters are adopted to sort the lithium ion cells (LICs) for better performance in the production process, such as capacity, open-circuit voltage (OCV), direct current resistance (DCR), et al. However, more sorting parameters make mass production more complex. In order to solve this conflict, we compare capacity, OCV, DCR, and self-discharge rate (k _OCV) in this paper, investigate their different effects on the cycle life of parallel LICs through analyzing the relationship between component cell variations and the durability of the parallel blocks. We find that the variations of the self-discharge rate in cells significantly affect the discharge capacity retention of the blocks: bigger variation in the cells results in a better cycle life of parallel LICs. Thus, it is prudent to perform cell sorting for the assembly of superior blocks based on the self-discharge rates of the cells.

Flexible graphene-based lithium ion batteries with ultrafast charge and discharge rates.

Project description:There is growing interest in thin, lightweight, and flexible energy storage devices to meet the special needs for next-generation, high-performance, flexible electronics. Here we report a thin, lightweight, and flexible lithium ion battery made from graphene foam, a three-dimensional, flexible, and conductive interconnected network, as a current collector, loaded with Li(4)Ti(5)O(12) and LiFePO(4), for use as anode and cathode, respectively. No metal current collectors, conducting additives, or binders are used. The excellent electrical conductivity and pore structure of the hybrid electrodes enable rapid electron and ion transport. For example, the Li(4)Ti(5)O(12)/graphene foam electrode shows a high rate up to 200 C, equivalent to a full discharge in 18 s. Using them, we demonstrate a thin, lightweight, and flexible full lithium ion battery with a high-rate performance and energy density that can be repeatedly bent to a radius of 5 mm without structural failure and performance loss.

Nitrogen self-doped carbon with super high-rate and long cycle life as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Nitrogen self-doped carbon was synthesized by hydrothermal and microwave calcination using polyacrylonitrile as a carbon source and nitrogen source. This method dramatically reduces the material preparation time while improving the electrochemical performance of amorphous carbon. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses reveal that the pyridine nitrogen content is increased and the graphitized nitrogen disappeared in an amorphous carbon block. This indicates that the nitrogen doping sites of the amorphous carbon block can be modulated by the hydrothermal method. Microscopic observations show that the nitrogen self-doped carbon is nano-carbon spheres and carbon micron block. The self-doped nitrogen micron carbon block exhibits excellent cyclability and ultra-high rate capacity. When cycled at 0.5 A g-1, the discharge capacity remains 356.6 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles. Even cycled at 5 A g-1, the rate capacity was maintained at 183.3 mA h g-1 after 300 cycles. The defects produced by self-doped pyridine nitrogen, not only improved the reactivity and electronic conductivity but also enhanced lithium-ion diffusion kinetics.

Long Cycle Life Organic Polysulfide Catholyte for Rechargeable Lithium Batteries.

Project description:Organic compounds with active sites for lithiation can be used as electrode materials for lithium batteries. Their tunable structures allow a variety of materials to be made and investigated. Herein, a spectrum of dipyridyl polysulfides (Py2S x , 3 ≤ x ≤ 8) is prepared in electrolyte by a one-pot synthesis method from dipyridyl disulfide (Py2S2) and elemental sulfur. It renders up to seven dipyridyl polysulfides (i.e., Py2S3, Py2S4, Py2S5, Py2S6, Py2S7, and Py2S8) which show fully reversible electrochemical behavior in lithium batteries. In the discharge, the initial lithiation occurs at 2.45 V leading to the breakage of Sα-Sβ bonds in Py2S x and formation of lithium 2-pyridinethiolate, in which lithium is coordinated in between N and S atoms. The left sulfur species act as elemental sulfur, showing two voltage plateaus at 2.3 and 2.1 V. The molecular dynamics simulations show the attraction between pyridyl groups and lithium polysulfides/sulfide via N···Li···S bonds, which enable good retention of soluble discharge products within electrodes and stable cycling performance. In the recharge, low-order Py2S x (e.g., Py2S3, Py2S4, and Py2S5) remain as the charged products. The mixture catholyte exhibits superlong cycle life at 1C rate with 1200 cycles and 70.5% capacity retention.

New Technique for Probing the Protecting Character of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase as a Critical but Elusive Property for Pursuing Long Cycle Life Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:The formation of a protecting nanolayer, so-called solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), on the negative electrode of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) from product precipitation of the cathodic decomposition of the electrolyte is a blessing since the electrically insulating nature of this nanolayer protects the electrode surface, preventing continuous electrolyte decomposition and enabling the large nominal cell voltage of LIBs, e.g., 3.3-3.8 V. Thus, the protection performance of the nanolayer SEI is essential for LIBs to achieve a long cycle life. Unfortunately, the evaluation of this critical property of the SEI is not trivial. Herein, a new, cheap, and easily implementable methodology, the redox-mediated enhanced coulometry, is presented to estimate the protecting quality of the SEI. The key element of the methodology is the addition of a redox mediator in the electrolyte during the degassing step (after the SEI formation cycle). The redox mediator leads to an internal self-discharge process that is inversely proportional to the protecting character of the SEI. Also, the self-discharge process results in an easily measurable decrease in Coulombic efficiency. The influence of vinylene carbonate as an electrolyte additive in the resulting SEI is used as a case study to showcase the potential of the proposed methodology.

Transparent lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Transparent devices have recently attracted substantial attention. Various applications have been demonstrated, including displays, touch screens, and solar cells; however, transparent batteries, a key component in fully integrated transparent devices, have not yet been reported. As battery electrode materials are not transparent and have to be thick enough to store energy, the traditional approach of using thin films for transparent devices is not suitable. Here we demonstrate a grid-structured electrode to solve this dilemma, which is fabricated by a microfluidics-assisted method. The feature dimension in the electrode is below the resolution limit of human eyes, and, thus, the electrode appears transparent. Moreover, by aligning multiple electrodes together, the amount of energy stored increases readily without sacrificing the transparency. This results in a battery with energy density of 10 Wh/L at a transparency of 60%. The device is also flexible, further broadening their potential applications. The transparent device configuration also allows in situ Raman study of fundamental electrochemical reactions in batteries.

Silicon oxycarbide glass-graphene composite paper electrode for long-cycle lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Silicon and graphene are promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacity; however, low volumetric energy density, poor efficiency and instability in high loading electrodes limit their practical application. Here we report a large area (approximately 15 cm × 2.5 cm) self-standing anode material consisting of molecular precursor-derived silicon oxycarbide glass particles embedded in a chemically-modified reduced graphene oxide matrix. The porous reduced graphene oxide matrix serves as an effective electron conductor and current collector with a stable mechanical structure, and the amorphous silicon oxycarbide particles cycle lithium-ions with high Coulombic efficiency. The paper electrode (mass loading of 2 mg cm(-2)) delivers a charge capacity of ?588 mAh g(-1)electrode (?393 mAh cm(-3)electrode) at 1,020th cycle and shows no evidence of mechanical failure. Elimination of inactive ingredients such as metal current collector and polymeric binder reduces the total electrode weight and may provide the means to produce efficient lightweight batteries.

Negative differential resistance as a critical indicator for the discharge capacity of lithium-oxygene batteries.

Project description:In non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries, the one-electron reduction of oxygen and subsequent lithium oxide formation both occur during discharge. This lithium oxide can be converted to insulating lithium peroxide via two different pathways: a second reduction at the cathode surface or disproportionation in solution. The latter process is known to be advantageous with regard to increasing the discharge capacity and is promoted by a high donor number electrolyte because of the stability of lithium oxide in media of this type. Herein, we report that the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction during discharge typically exhibits negative differential resistance. Importantly, the magnitude of negative differential resistance, which varies with the system component, and the position of the cathode potential relative to the negative differential resistance determined the reaction pathway and the discharge capacity. This result implies that the stability of lithium oxide on the cathode also contributes to the determination of the reaction pathway.

Non-destructive monitoring of charge-discharge cycles on lithium ion batteries using ?Li stray-field imaging.

Project description:Magnetic resonance imaging provides a noninvasive method for in situ monitoring of electrochemical processes involved in charge/discharge cycling of batteries. Determining how the electrochemical processes become irreversible, ultimately resulting in degraded battery performance, will aid in developing new battery materials and designing better batteries. Here we introduce the use of an alternative in situ diagnostic tool to monitor the electrochemical processes. Utilizing a very large field-gradient in the fringe field of a magnet, stray-field-imaging (STRAFI) technique significantly improves the image resolution. These STRAFI images enable the real time monitoring of the electrodes at a micron level. It is demonstrated by two prototype half-cells, graphite?Li and LiFePO??Li, that the high-resolution (7)Li STRAFI profiles allow one to visualize in situ Li-ions transfer between the electrodes during charge/discharge cyclings as well as the formation and changes of irreversible microstructures of the Li components, and particularly reveal a non-uniform Li-ion distribution in the graphite.

One-Dimensional Porous Silicon Nanowires with Large Surface Area for Fast Charge⁻Discharge Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:In this study, one-dimensional porous silicon nanowire (1D⁻PSiNW) arrays were fabricated by one-step metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) to etch phosphorus-doped silicon wafers. The as-prepared mesoporous 1D⁻PSiNW arrays here had especially high specific surface areas of 323.47 m²·g-1 and were applied as anodes to achieve fast charge⁻discharge performance for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The 1D⁻PSiNWs anodes with feature size of ~7 nm exhibited reversible specific capacity of 2061.1 mAh·g-1 after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 1.5 A·g-1. Moreover, under the ultrafast charge⁻discharge current rate of 16.0 A·g-1, the 1D⁻PSiNWs anodes still maintained 586.7 mAh·g-1 capacity even after 5000 cycles. This nanoporous 1D⁻PSiNW with high surface area is a potential anode candidate for the ultrafast charge⁻discharge in LIBs with high specific capacity and superior cycling performance.

Multistaged discharge constructing heterostructure with enhanced solid-solution behavior for long-life lithium-oxygen batteries.

Project description:Inferior charge transport in insulating and bulk discharge products is one of the main factors resulting in poor cycling stability of lithium-oxygen batteries with high overpotential and large capacity decay. Here we report a two-step oxygen reduction approach by pre-depositing a potassium carbonate layer on the cathode surface in a potassium-oxygen battery to direct the growth of defective film-like discharge products in the successive cycling of lithium-oxygen batteries. The formation of defective film with improved charge transport and large contact area with a catalyst plays a critical role in the facile decomposition of discharge products and the sustained stability of the battery. Multistaged discharge constructing lithium peroxide-based heterostructure with band discontinuities and a relatively low lithium diffusion barrier may be responsible for the growth of defective film-like discharge products. This strategy offers a promising route for future development of cathode catalysts that can be used to extend the cycling life of lithium-oxygen batteries.
